Chapter 9: A Friend

Pennator woke up slowly. He felt pain all throughout his whole body, like he had been stabbed multipile times in the chest. He rolled, and yelped in surprise as he fell off whatever he had been on. Groaning and getting up, he finally managed to see where he was.

He was in a cell, a prison cell as far as he could see. The walls, roof, floor and everything else in there was made of grey, thick stone that had hundreds of scars and scratches in its walls. There was a disgusting smell coming from a hole in the left corner of the prison. It was a reasonable size, enough for him to spread his wings, but not enough to fly.

What he had been laying on was a stone bed, a large, round, stone bed. It didn't look comfortable at all. There was a straw pillow there as well, hardly big enough for him to lay on.

Pennator stretched out his wings, wincing as he felt the muscles pull. They were saw, extremely saw.

'Finally up?' said a voice in his head.

'Yeah,' replied Pennator.

''Bout time,' said Caleb, mentally yawning, 'You've been out for almost a month.'

'WHAT!' cried out Pennator disbelieving.

'Just kidding, more like a few hours,' said Caleb laughing, 'But it has seemed like a month. There really is nothing to do when your asleep.'

'I'm sure there isn't,' replied Pennator with a slight snort.

He took another look around the cell, 'What do you think of this place so far?'

'Not a good first impression,' replied Caleb, 'What do you think?'

'This place has definitly not met my expectations,' replied Pennator.

'Well, you did try to flame the first dragon you met,' said Caleb.

'And for good reason,' continued Pennator.

Caleb laughed at that, 'More like loosing your temper, you should really get control of that.'

'Shut up.'

He walked over to the door of the cell, which was made of hardened steel. There was a greating in the door that he could peer through. What he saw wasn't very hopefull. He was met with a corridor made of the same dull stone. There were other metal doors pickpocketed through the walls, but as far as he could see there weren't any guards.

He walked back to the middle of the cell and sat down on his haunches. Suddenly something hit him.

'Where's Jack?' he said.

'Oh great,' said Caleb, the worry suddenly increasing in him, 'I told you we shouldn't have taken him.'

Pennator ignored him and walked up to the door.

"Jack!" he yelled out.

There were a few scuffles in the other cells but no one answered.

"Jack!" he called again.

Still no answer.

'Maybe he got away,' said Caleb.

'I hope so,' said Pennator.

They were silent for a few seconds before Pennator spoke again.

'We need to get out of here,' he said.

Caleb agreed. They started to look around for an escape root. He tried breathing fire at the door, tyring to melt it, but he quickly found out that it was immune to any sourt of heat. He looked for a weekness in the walls, but didn't find any obvious ones. He turned his gaze to the rank smelling hole in the floor.

'No,' he said to himself, 'Not through there.'

'Why not?' said Caleb.

'Why on earth would I? There's probably every maner of disgusting substance down there.'

'Just blow it up.'

'What?'

'With your fire. I here that suff is very flamable.'

Pennator smiled and began to walk over to it. He peeked down and gagged slightly at the stench. He opened his mouth and let loose a burst of fire into it. There was a huge bang as the substances below caught alight. The ground and the walls shook, and fire shot from the hole, hitting him in the face and throwing him back to the other wall. There were roars of surprise and one of pain from the other cells.

Pennator got up from where he had been thrown against the wall. He shook himself, then stared towards the hole, before snorting a laugh.

'What was that?' said Caleb.

'Don't know,' replied Pennator, 'But it didn't look like anything happened.'

He was right. The walls and the floor hadn't been damaged in any way, except for the few dust particles were still setteling. There were also a few voices from the other dragons trapped in here, yelling threats at whoever did it.

Pennator slumped down on his stone bead. It all seemed pretty hopeless. The first minute of him getting here was met with him falling into uncosciuoness after getting into a fight. He sighed, he just hoped Jack was all right.

About an hour passed, before the fire drake heard some footsteps through the corridor, and they sounded dragon. Interested, he walked up to the door and looked through the grating to see four black dragons walking through the hallway. They went passed all the other cells until they stopped at his. He took a step back in surprise as one of them seemed to mutter something, and the cell door opened.

He blinked as light flooded into the room, which he was very surprised about.

"Don't just stand there gawking," said the dragon, "Your coming with us."

Pennator frowned, "Why?"

The dragon narrowed his eyes. "Do you dare question us after what happened last time?"

"Right, sorry," he replied, submitting.

He didn't exactly want to be hit by that dark fire again. The dark dragon moved aside, allowing him to walk through. They quickly surrounded him, putting him in the middle. They began to march him back through the corridor, and through the metal door. He made a mental note of the prison, looking at all the walls. None of them looked like they had a weekness, but hey had to. He turned his head to look at the roof, which was to his surprise, glass.

'Maybe I could break through that,' he thought.

'How? The hallway is to small to spread your wings and I doubt that glass could be broken even if you tried,' said Caleb.

Pennator just nodded, but didn't take it out of his ways to escape.

"Keep your eyes forward!" yelled one of the dragons in front of him.

He did just that. The dragon in front of him looked back at him, and his eyes widened in surprise. He quickly looked forward, causing Pennator to frown.

'What was that?' said Pennator.

They made it to the door and walked through, revealing another long hallway with another glass roof. They continued through more of these hallways until they eventually came to a large open space, with no glass roof. This time most of the room was made from wood, Pennator couldn't tell which, but it was definitly big. Milling throughout the room were hundreds of dark dragons, and a few others. They were either flying, or just walking places, either way Pennator knew that there would be no escape from here.

"Can you fly?" asked one of the dark dragons.

Pennator frowned again, "Of course I can."

The dragon nodded at the others, "Then follow us, and no funny business."

The front two took flight, and Pennator followed, with the other two behind him. The flew through the crowd of dragons easily, and into a doorway at the top of the wall. From there they followed a long tube like structure, which a few other dragons were also using, and into a smaller room.

This room was filled with torches, casting an eare glow through it. The floor was a white, beach like sand that was scorched in several places. It was also extremely roughled up, as if there had been many fights in here. Besides the sand, the room was empty. It was a dome shape, as far as Pennator could tell, was large enough to fly around freely in, but only for about five dragons at once.

As he looked around he heard one of the other dragons laugh.

"Interested are we," he said, "Don't get to excited, this is the place where you will be training."

Pennator looked back at him, "What?"

"Training, to fight, in our forces," repeated the dragon, "The fire you breathed at the dragon who brought you in, left him with internal burning and in a lot of pain. It would take a very powerful dragon to do this, so we have decided to recruit you. If you don't want to be in our army, there will be consiquences, but we'll talk about that later."

Pennator growled slightly at the last comment. He didn't want to join this army, but it seemed he had no other choice.

"Now, I will be..." he was stopped by the whispering of one of the other dragons.

"You sure," Pennator heard him say.

The other dragon nodded. He looked back to Pennator.

"Well, I was going to train you, but Recon here has volunteered, so I guess you can have him," he said, "We will be back in about four hours, until then, by."

He and the two of the other dragons left through the tunnel in the roof of the building, the other one, the smallest, stayed behind. He looked Pennator straight in the eye.

"Hello," he said, "I'm Recon, if you haven't heard. What's your name?"

Pennator was about to speek when Caleb stopped him.

'Don't tell him,' said Caleb, 'It may work against you.'

Pennator kept silent.

Recon sighed, "Look, if you tell me your name I may or may not be able to get you out of here."

Pennator's eyes widened in surprise.

'Don't,' But Caleb was already to late.

"Pennator," said Pennator, "Why do you ask?"

The dragons eyes lit up with excitment, "Thought so. We've been waiting for you to get here. Ever since Chronicle sent out that dream."

"You know about that?"

Recon nodded, "Now that that's settled, I just need to tell Terrador and he'll organise the rescue party! And you don't need to worry about your friend Jack. He's safe."

Pennator sighed in relief at that last bit of information.

"I also want a chance to teach you," said Recon, "I am one of the best fighters here, and maybe one of the only ones that can stand up to you. With your mothers abilities you are extremely powerful, and I want to unlock that power."

"What?" Pennator was confused.

"To put it simply, where going to get you fit for battle, but for a different army," said Recon smiling.
