Chapter 7: The Start of a Journey
The week went by in a blur. What was about to happen was all Caleb could think about, and he got busted more times then usual for 'day dreaming'. Pennator was also excited for it, possibly more then Caleb was. It would be the first time he saw other dragons.
Usually in the afternoons or nights Pennator went flying. He had to get his fitness up if he was going to be able to fly across the ocean. He was getting a lot better at it as well. He was able to dive, swurve and even fly backwards without much effort.
By friday afternoon Caleb was rushing out of the school gate by the time school had ended. Jack went with him, also extremely excited about what was to come, although he kept it secret from Caleb. His siblings also went with him. They had been getting used to the whole shape-shifting thing.
Caleb walked inside, almost jumping with anticipation. It was the weekend, and they were going to Dragon Island. He had expected a dream that week about it, but nothing happened. He walked into his room, thinking if he should pack anything or not. In the end he put a spear set of cloths in a backpack and his I-pod, as well as a charger, although it was very unlikely he would need it.
'Nothing else?' said Pennator surprised.
'No, if I'm thinking right you'll be spending more time around then I will, and they may give me all the necessary living requirements,' he said.
'Okay then, it's your choice,' said Pennator with a mental shrug.
He chucked the bag into his bead, remembering that it wasn't until the next day they would be leaving. He walked back to the living room to find that his brothers had already turned on the TV, and his sister was on the computer. He sighed and sat down on the couch.
It took a while for his mother to get home. She had been at work all day. She worked two jobs, a nurse and a babysitter. Since Caleb's father had disappeared she had to give it all to keep the family running, she had done very well.
"Afternoon mum," said Caleb as she walked in.
She smiled tiredly at him, "Good afternoon, how as school?"
"The same," replied Caleb, "How about work?"
"Alright, I guess," she said, coming down to sit next to him.
Caleb was surprised, she wasn't usually this tired after work.
"Big day ha?" he said.
She nodded slightly, but Caleb seemed to guess that wasn't what was bothering her.
"I'll be okay mum," he said, "Don't worry about me."
She looked at him and smiled, "I know, and I know I can't change your mind about going."
"Thanks," he said.
They sat there together for a while, watching the TV, until Rona got up and went to get dinner ready. Dinner that night was very quite, extremely quite. Nobody seemed to be willing to say anything. Dinner finished and Caleb went to bed early.
The next morning he woke up refreshed and ready to go. He shot out of bead and looked at his watch. It was nearly seven o'clock, early for Caleb. He walked out into the kitchen and had breakfast. It was a Saturday, a day of rest for the family, and that's exactly what they did, rest. Around lunch Caleb asked if Jack could come over, he could.
They talked about what was going to happen, and how exciting it would be. Jack was careful to hide the fact that he was coming as well. They talked for about an hour before Rona called Caleb in for lunch. Caleb went in and Jack went back to his house, to get ready.
He spent the rest of his day sitting on the soafer, waiting for night to come. As the sun set the mood around the house began to get more excited. Caleb quickly worked out a plan with Pennator and soon they were all set to go.
Caleb had a quick dinner with his family, and told the plan to his mother. They were going to leave at eleven, way past Caleb's bed time but he didn't care. They would fly west towards the ocean and follow Pennator's sense of direction from there.
They waited for the next few hours, impatiently. He said good night and good by to his brothers and sister before the went to sleep then, tried to keep himself from going to sleep. He thought about transforming but his mother convinsed him not to, not in the house anyway.
Caleb watched his watch as the minutes ticked by agonizingly slowly. He thought about leaving a few minutes early, but was convinsed not to by Pennator. It was ten to eleven when they finally decided to leave.
He walked outside and took a big breath. He looked back to his mother, who was smiling at him, tears trailing down her cheek. He gave here a hug.
"By mum," he said, "I'll see you in a month or so."
"By," she whispered back.
Caleb walked to the middle of the yard and transformed in a flash of bright light. The red dragon appeared there. He looked back at Rona.
"I know I will never be able to call you mother, but I know Caleb will miss you, and so will I," he said with a smile.
Rona nodded, "Just keep him safe."
"I will."
With that Pennator took a flap and launched himself into the air. He circled around the house a couple of times before looking down at the front yard of Jack's house. He was waiting with his bag on the porch, looking towards the sky.
'Pennator, why is Jack there?' asked Caleb suspicously.
Pennator didn't answer. He flew down and landed in front of the house, after making sure nobody was around. Jack jumped in surprise.
"Hey," said Pennator, "Ready for a ride?"
Jack smiled at him. He walked over and jumped onto Pennator's back. Pennator shifted, trying to get comfortable.
"Am I to heavy?" asked Jack.
"No, just never had a human on my back before," he said.
Jack nodded. Once Pennator had gotten used to the extra weight he opened his wings.
"Hold on," he said, and launched himself into the air.
Jack gripped his horns and cried out in surprise and excitment. Once they were high enough in the air Pennator sraightened out. Jack was heaving for air, probably from screaming to much.
"So, how was it!" yelled Pennator over the wind.
"Awesome!" yelled back Jack, "Can we do that again?"
Pennator laughed, "Maybe later, right now, we need to fly."
He angled himself west and began to take strong wingbeats, flying foward. Jack glanced over Pennator's back and saw the city below. The lights made it look like fireflies, and he could see the occasional car as well.
"This is amazing!" he said, letting go of Pennator's horns.
He put his hands up in the air smiled. It was the best feeling he had ever experienced. Pennator looked down at the city as well, and smiled. He had seen this view so many times over the past week, and never once did he grow tired of it. He just wished it was safe enough to see it at day time.
He looked forward towards the mountains. He was more the high enough to get over them so he didn't bother to rise. Jack was having the time of his life, it was lucky he was wearing warm clothing.
'Pennator!' cried out Caleb in his mind, 'Turn around right now and drop him off at the house!'
'What?' said Pennator pretending to be confused.
'You know perfectly well what I mean!' yelled Caleb again, 'Turn around and put Jack back right now!'
'Why?' said Pennator with a smile.
'Because he isn't coming with us on this trip!' said Caleb.
Pennator looked over his shoulder at Jack, then turned his attention forward.
'To me it looks like he is,' he said.
'Pennator! If you don't put him back right now I'll.. I'll... You'll regret it!' he said.
Pennator laughed at that, 'Look, Caleb, we need his help. It will be good to have someone we can trust over there.'
'He could get killed!' said Caleb.
'He won't,' replied Pennator, 'I'll make sure of it.'
'He isn't up for this. He doesn't know what he is getting into!' said Caleb.
'Yes he does,' replied Pennator, 'And he is ready for it, you'll see.'
'No, I won't see,' yelled Caleb getting angry, 'Now turn around N...'
Pennator shut him out of his mind. He took a sigh of relied.
'That's better,' he thought.
He looked back at Jack, who had his eyes closed and was smiling.
"Enjoying youself are you?" said Pennator with a smile.
Jack opened his eyes and nodded his head, "This is by far the best thing that has ever happened to me."
"You know, I agree with you," he said, "Flying is the best thing in the world. I doubt I'll ever get tired of it."
Jack glanced towards the mountains, "So, do you actually know where we are going?"
Pennator shook his head, "But I know we will get there, eventually."
