Chapter 6: A Bit of Explaining
That morning, when Caleb woke up, he felt refreshed, very refreshed. He smiled and slipped out of bead. It was a weekend so he didn't have to get ready for school or anything. That day he planned to tell Jack about Pennator and his shape shifting abilities. He quickly got dressed into some casual clothes and went out to the table.
It was around seven thirty, and most of his siblings were still asleep. His mum was at the table, reading a book. She looked up when she saw him and smiled.
"Morning," she said, "Have a good sleep?"
Caleb stretched and nodded, "One of the best I've had."
"Well that's good," she replied before going back to her book.
She seemed nervous. Caleb could only guess why, but he thought it was something to do with Pennator. He walked over to the table and poored himself some cereal before sitting down. The sat in silence for a couple of minutes before Caleb decided to speek up.
"Hey mum," he said.
She looked up from her book, "Yeah."
He hesitated for a second, trying to figure out how to word this, "How did you find me? And I don't want the normal story. Did you feel anything different that night, or see anything out of the ordinary."
Rona sighed and placed a book mark in her book before setting it down.
"Yes," she said, "When I found you, I had a very strange feeling about you. It wasn't a good feeling, or a bad one. It was one of those feelings that you have when you, oh I don't know, when you see someone and you know there's something different about them. That's what I felt when I saw you. I didn't know why or how but it was there."
Caleb nodded slightly, "Anything else?"
"Yes. When I picked you up from the ground, and looked around. I noticed two, large, reptile like footprints in the stone. I was slightly shocked at that," she said smiling slightly, "And scared. I was half thinking that you had been kidnapped by this large beast and dropped here accedently, and I scared away the beast when I opened the door."
'Oh wow,' he thought, 'That dream was true.'
He looked at his mother, trying to decide whether or not to tell her about the dream, then decided to go for it.
"Mum," he said, "I had a dream last night, that explained a few things to me. What you have said proves the dream is real, so I think I'll just go right into it."
He began to tell her about the dream he had had. She listened to every word, not even acting surprised when he told her about the shape shifting potion, or the land of dragons. As he went through the dream he finally came to the part when the green dragon put him, in a bundle and place him at her front door. He then finished with telling her about what the blue dragon said.
She was silent, very silent, after hearing what had happened. It was almost a minute later before she finally spoke up.
"So that's what really happened ha?" she said with a sigh, "You came from a land full of dragons, who were in a civil war, and you happened to make it here, carried by a large green one that made the foot prints at the front door, and left you there."
Caleb just nodded. She sighed again, and lent against her hands, trying to think of what to do. Finally she looked up.
"I won't stop you from going to the dragon land," she said.
Caleb widened his eyes in surprise.
"It is you birthplace after all, and as long as it's free then I don't really have anything to stop you with," she continued, "But if you do go, try to stay alive. It sound's like this civil war is still raging, and that's almost twelve years since you came into my arms."
She smiled at him, "And if your thinking that I was scared of Pennator. I wasn't, I was just confused. Now that you have explained what has happened everything is starting to make sense. Also, while your over there, find your father. He is over there, that's the only place he could be."
"Wait, what?" exclaimed Caleb.
"Your father. When you were about five years old two men broke into the house and tried to take you with them. Your father attacked them, but he wasn't enough. They threw down this ball like thing that became a portal. Well at least that's what I think it was. And your father fell into it. I don't know what happened to you. When I came in the room was on fire and you were lying in the middle of it, unconscious. There was a man there as well, but he was burnt horribly and was half turned to ash. I can only make assumptions on who did that."
'Pennator?' said Caleb accusingly.
'What, I don't remember it,' he replied.
'But you did it.'
Pennator hesitated for a second, 'Yes, I did, or I believe so.'
Caleb sighed and looked at his mother, "Thank you, for understanding."
Rona smiled slightly, "That's what mothers are for."
Caleb smiled back, and they sat there in a comfortable silence.
"When do you plan on leaving?" she said.
'In a week,' said Pennator instantly in Caleb's mind.
"In a week," relayed Caleb, slightly surprised at Pennator's quick answer.
"Okay, why a week," she said.
'Yeah, why a week?' Caleb asked.
'Because it gives you enough time to say good by to your family, and me enough time to get fit for the flight ahead, and perfect the landing,' said Pennator.
Caleb smiled at the last part. Pennator's first two landings haven't been the best. He quickly told his mother why, and she nodded.
"Okay, but don't think you'll be getting out of school," she said with a smile.
That was Caleb's next question, and he hung his head.
'Darn,' he said.
'It was a good try,' said Pennator laughing inside his head.
He quickly gulped down his breakfast, and wondered outside. He had to tell Jack. He spotted him next door jumping on a trampoline. He ran and jumped onto the fence. It took Jack a coupled of seconds to see him. When he did he backflipped of the trampoline, landind perfectly, and walked over to Caleb.
"Hey," he said, "What's up?'
Caleb smiled at him, "I got something to show you, just not here. How about we head up to the moutain."
"The mountain?" replied Jack with a frown.
"Yep, grab your bike. I'll meet you over at your place," he said.
Jack nodded and got down off the fence. Caleb ran inside, grabbed his helmet and his bike, then made his way to his best friend's house. Jack was waiting outside and he fell in behind Caleb as he road past. They made there way to the mountain in record time, mostly because they were excited.
They stopped and left there bikes behind the bush before beginning to climb up the mountain. As soon as Caleb was sure no one could see them, he stopped. Jack was behind him and his breathing was slightly laboured.
"I hope this was worth it," said Jack, leaning against a nearby tree.
"It is," replied Caleb with a smile, "Just, try not to freek out, or run away."
"Why would I do that?" said Jack.
"Oh, and don't have a heart attack," continued Caleb.
"You making it sound like this is going to be scary."
"It isn't, well it might, Okay here goes," he said before Jack could say any more.
He thought 'Pennator'. There was a flash of light and there, standing before Jack, was Pennator. It took a second for Jack to realise what had happened. He opened his mouth and was about to scream when Pennator stopped him.
"Hey, don't freak out," he said, "Calm down."
Jack stopped himself, then took a big, slow breath.
"What the..." he could only say.
"I know, awsome isn't it," said Pennator looking at his wings.
"How the hell did you do that," said Jack.
Pennator shrugged, "Shape shifter potion."
"You... you can become a dragon!" yelled Jack, "But how, wait, are you by any chance Pennator?"
Penntor nodded his head.
"Oh," was all Jack could say, "So... you can transform into each other."
Pennator nodded his head again.
"That is so.... AWSOME!" he said, "How long have you been able to do this?"
"Since yesterday," replied Pennator.
"What? Then how did you do it?" he asked.
"Caleb fell of a cliff, and as he fell he managed to transform into me," said Pennator with a toothy grin.
"That, that is so cool," he said.
He reached out his hand to touch Pennator, and hesitated.
"May I?" he said.
"Sure, go ahead," replied Pennator with a slight shrug.
He ran his hands over Pennator's scales. Pennator shivered slightly at the touch. It felt kinda nice.
"Wow, your smoother then I thought you should be, and now that I mention it your smaller as well," he said.
"I guess, but human's may have got dragons wrong, or I may not be fully grown yet," replied Pennator.
"Well, let's hope you do grow. Your not that menacing," he said.
Pennator glared at him, "I can be menacing when I want to."
"I'm sure you can," said Jack, patting the dragon on the head.
Pennator just narrowed his eyes.
"So, can you explain why you can turn into... you?" asked Jack.
Pennator sighed, and retold the dream, and added a few details in off his life. He also told Jack of his plan to leave in the next week.
"Wait! Your leaving!" he said, "How long are you going to be gone?"
Pennator shrugged, "A few months probably. It depends on what happens."
"Can I come?" asked Jack.
Pennator hesitated for a second.
'Absolutely not!' yelled Caleb in his head.
"Sure," replied Pennator, "We could use some company. I'm afraid if the only thing I do is talk in my head for the whole time then I might forget how to speek. Besides, I know enough about Caleb anyway. I would like someone interesting to talk to, and you can have my back."
He smiled at the last part.
'What are you doing!?' yelled Caleb, 'He's not going to come. It'll be to dangerous.'
'We need him to come,' replied Pennator, 'If he comes then there will be at least someone we can trust there.'
'Oh, and there won't be others,' retorted Caleb.
Pennator showed him the image of the black dragons attacking,'Yes, there may not be others. For all we know the whole place may have been taken over by evil dragons.'
'Which is exactly why he shouldn't come!' yelled Caleb.
Pennator just shook his head.
"What's wrong?" said Jack, noticing Pennator's silence.
"Sorry," replied the dragon, "Caleb and I were just having a bit of a disagreement."
"About me coming?" asked Jack.
Pennator nodded.
"Well it's not like he can do anything. When you've transformed you have complete control," replied Jack, "Right?'
Pennator's eyes widened at the realisation. He pushed Caleb out of his head so he could talk to Jack without him hearing.
"Your right," he said with a toothy smile, "He wouldn't be able to do anything about it. What about your mum and dad?"
"Oh, I'll take care of that," said Jack, "What time are you leaving?"
"We are hoping next sunday night," replied Pennator, "Around midnight."
Jack nodded, "I'll be up then."
"Good, so it's all settled?"
"Yep."
With that Pennator let Caleb come back into his mind.
'Hey, what was that for,' said Caleb with a mental frown.
'Oh, sorry, did I block you out. That was accident. Won't happen again,' replied Pennator sneekily.
'Okay, just don't let it happen again. I don't like the feeling,' replied Caleb, 'Now, if your done talking to Jack, we better be heading back home.'
'Fine,' replied Pennator.
There was another flash and where Pennator had been standing was Caleb. Jack had shielded his eyes. He looked back to him.
"You guys can change so quickly," he said.
Caleb grinned at him, "I know."
They walked back down the mountain and got onto there bikes, before riding home. This week was going to be an interesting one.
