Chapter 4: The Dream

That night Caleb went to sleep early. He was tired, surprisingly, and his thoughts were full of what had happened today. The change, the men, and Pennator. He asked himself over and over again, what does this mean, and tried to find an answer. In a way he had always expected it, but he didn't know why, or how it had happened. Pennator tried to help but he was almost as confused as Caleb.

So Caleb went to sleep, his mind still on Pennator, and while he slept, he dreamed.

A blue dragon appeared suddenly out of nowhere. Everything else was black except for some slight colours in the distance. The blue dragon was different from Pennator. It was bigger for one thing, nearly twice the size. It's scales were slighlty smoother, and on it's tail were larger scales and instead of ending in a scorpion sting it just ended in a tip

"Who are you?" asked Caleb interested already.

The dragon looked at him with a tilt of its head.

"You are the Shape Shifter?" it asked smiling, "Well, I must say you are different from what I expected."

"Different? How."

"Your hair isn't red. A fire Shape Shifter's hair is usually red."

"Oh."

The dragon laughed, "Don't sound so dissapointed. From what I have heard of you, you have remained very alusive. Not allowing yourself to get caught."

Caleb nodded slowly.

The dragon sighed, "Your step mother is a smart woman. Terrador chose well."

"Who?" asked Caleb.

"You will see him soon enough, but first let me ask you something," said the dragon, "Did you meet two men, trying to capture you."

Caleb nodded his head.

"Well, it looks like it has already started," he said.

"Are you Antylor?" asked Caleb suddenly.

The dragon laughed again, "No, no, I'm not Antylor. You may call me Chronicle, the never ending one."

"Never ending?" said Caleb.

Chronicle smiled, "All will be revealed to you in time, young one. The reason I have decided to talk to you is because dragon kind is under attack. There has been a huge civil war on our island, and we a loosing. I have been captured and locked up under a crystal that holds the power I have. But you are confused, are you not? Your wondering why you are a Shape Shifter, where you came from. You know you have been adopted but what you don't know is why you were adopted, and who you really are."

"How did you know!" said Caleb.

"I know many things, maybe to much for my mortal body to spare," said Chronicle with a grin.

"Can you tell me, what happened to my real parents. And why was I left with my step mum?"

"I will show you," said Chronicle, "Watch closely."

Suddenly the vision of the dream changed. Caleb was now in a city, or what looked like city, but all the houses were wooden and large. It looked like there was a battle going on, there was a battle going on. There were dragons flying all around in the sky, the most prominent of those were dark dragons. There were hundreds, thousands even, of dragons fighting each other. There were five different dragons that Caleb could see. Red, like Pennator, Green, Blue, like Chronicle, and yellow. The black ones were different because it seemed it was them verse the other four.

The dream changed again and Caleb was following a green dragon. The green dragons were gigantic, defintily the biggest. They had huge tails as well, with a large spiked ball on the end. The dragon flew through the battle, effortlessly cutting down the dragons in front of him. He was flying towards the a house on the edge of the city.

Ten dark dragons broke into the house, rushing through. Suddenly the top of the house exploded in a weird coloured fire. The earth dragon hurried towards the house, tyring his best to get there. Knocking out another dark dragon he flew through the roof. Standing there was another dragon, a fire one. The two dragons started talking hurridly to each other, but Caleb couldn't pick up the words.

A baby dragon suddenly appeared behind the red dragons wing. She looked at him, then said something to the other dragon. He nodded, picking up the baby dragon. The baby dragon struggled a bit, and blew a snort of fire. The mother, or that's what Caleb thought, smiled.

The earth dragon said something. The mother nodded and walked over to a cuboard on the wall. She picked out a clear bottle of liquid, and gave it to the green dragon. The green dragon smiled passed the baby hanging from his jaw.

The mother looked at the baby and sighed. She said something to him, this time I heard.

"Keep safe Pennator, " she said, "I don't have much to give you but this, and know, that when you need me most I will be there."

She touched the baby with her nose, and a white energy poured out of her and into the baby dragon. The green dragon watched on in surprise. When the energy stopped the mother looked into the sky, and snarled. Above them was a whole army of dark dragons. She said something to the green dragon. The green dragon tried to argue but she stopped him.

He suddenly lifted his wings and flew into the air. The mother spread her wings and roared at the dragons above her, suddenly bursting into flames, but these weren't normal flames, these flames were pure yellow, with black streaks running through it. The dragons above hesitated. The mother didn't give them much of a chance to fight back as she suddenly launched herself into the air.

She charged into the mass of dark dragons, the first few she rammed right threw them and they turned instantly to ash. She opened her more and unleashed a stream of the strange fire, incinerating another few hundred dragons. She swung her tail around, turning another one to ash. She flew right into the middle of the army of dragons.

Caleb watched on in horror. What was she doing? She may be powerful, turning another dragon to ash was amazing in itself, but she couldn't hold off the entire army.

She cut down hundreds of dragons as she flew, unleashing the deadly fire on many others. Suddenly she stopped and started hovering. She breathed another burst of fire, then started to flap her wings in a rithim. Fire from her wings started expanding until it was surroung her. Any dragon that got close was instantly incinerated. She breathed one last burst of fire before letting out a roar that echoed across the battle field. The fire around her imploaded, then exploded with the explosion the size of a nuclear bomb.

Any and all dragons that were caught in the explosion were instantly turned to ash. The explosion travelled across the whole city. The only dragons that weren't incinerated by the explosion were the coloured ones, which were hovering in mid air, looking dazed. When the fire cleared Caleb had one last look at where the dragon had been, she wasn't there.

The dream suddenly changed again. This time it was back at the green dragon. He was flying across the ocean, the baby Pennator clutched in his arms. They flew fast, and by the time they reached the land it was nearly morning. The sun was just coming up. The dragon flew right over a city, but extremely high in the air, so no one would no what it was. Caleb recognised the city as Canberra, where he lived.

The dragon flew over a desert. He flew until the end of the next day, and he was exhausted. He stopped near a town near the sea. He made sure he wasn't spotted by humans. The dragons rested, and that night he flew again, but this time instead of continuing his flight he glided over the town, looking for something. He seemed to find it.

He swooped down and landed on a roof, surprisingly quitly for such a big dragon. He took the baby dragon from his arms and layed him on the roof. He unhooked the clear liquid on his back with a bit of difficulty, and using his paws, opened the bottle. He undid the lid and made the baby dragon open his mouth. The baby dragon wined a little, but once the liquid touched his mouth he stopped, and gulped down the whole bottle.

The dragon smiled as he watched. Once Pennator was finished he curled up and went to sleep. Suddnely he started to shine, a long white glow, then there was a flash, and instead of a baby dragon laying there, there was a baby human. The dragon picked up the human carefully and flew down to the door of the next house. He knocked heavily on the door before taking off into the air.

The door opened to reveal... Rona, Caleb's mother. Caleb's eyes widened in surprise as she bent down and picked up the baby. She looked around, and called out, before walking into her house.

The dream changed again and they were standing back where the dream had begun. Caleb looked at Chronicle with surprise. He opened his mouth, then closed it again. He was still processing what he had just seen.

"Do you understand why you are here?" said Chronicle, "And why the enemy is after you. Many dragons saw your mother give you her soul, and believe it or not, a few of them managed to survive the ashfire storm your mother created."

"What do I do?" he asked, suddenly realising that there was something else.

"We need your help," said Chronicle, "You hold the largest amount of power in the world, and your a shape shifter. We need your help desperatly."

"Where do I go, how do I get there?" asked Caleb.

"Pennator will know the way," said Chronicle.

"But how..." said Caleb.

Suddenly he woke up, covered in sweat. He started shivering, what was all that about?
