Chapter 2: Not Fast Enough
Caleb rushed into the house, out of breath. He put his bag near the door and walked into the kitchen.
"Afternoon Caleb," said his mum.
"Afternoon," replied Caleb, still out of breath.
His mum, Rona, was an interesting character. She had brown hair and blue eyes. She was average hight and was a single Parent. There dad had disappeared when Caleb had been five, and that doesn't mean he ra away, he literaly disappeared.
Rone was aways on the move, no stopping anywhere for more then three years. Where they were now, Canberra, had been the longest stay in one place they had ever had. Four years so far. Caleb didn't no why they moved so often, but he was beggining to suspect something.
"What's the matter?" said Rona, she was chopping up an apple.
Caleb waited until he got his breath back, "I was chased, by some scary men."
Rona stopped her hand in the air midstroke, "What?"
"I was chased," replied Caleb.
"And you out ran them?" said Rona, looking at him with surprise.
"No, I managed to get them to run into a wall, and knock themselves out," said Caleb with a slight smile.
Rona sighed with relief. She walked over to him and sat down.
"Do you know why they were after you?" she said.
Caleb thought about shaking his head, lying, but then he stopped himself. He had tried to tell his mum about Pennator before but she never believed him. If he did tell them what they had said she might finally believe him.
"They were after Pennator," he said.
"Pennator?" replied his mother confused.
"Yes, that's right," said Caleb, "You know, the dragon I've been talking about."
Rona smiled then laughed, "Oh Caleb, you must have misheard them."
Caleb shook his head, "No, they deffinitly said Pennator."
Rona's smile faulted. She got up from her table.
"Well," she said, "Be careful next time your out on your own, if there isn't anyone to help you I'll pick you up, just in case."
"Thanks," replied Caleb.
Rona got up and walked back to the kitchen, continuing with the apple.
"When's the others going to get back?" asked Caleb eventually.
"Tomorrow," said Rona, "They will be back tomorrow."
Three days passed without much excitment. Caleb did tell his siblings about the chase and they asked him all soughts of questions, and appraised him when he told them that he had punched one of the guys in the face.
It was the weekend, which ment the others got to do whatever they wanted. Caleb went over to Jack's house. They lived right next to each other so it was pretty easy to go over. Caleb told Jack what had happened.
"Wow," said Jack.
They were sitting on the fence seperating there two houses.
"I know right, and they were after Pennator, I don't even know how they knew about him," said Caleb.
Jack nodded slowly. He leant back on the fence, holding on tight, making sure he didn't fall from his seat.
"It would be cool to have a dragon inside you," he said, "And it would be even better if you could, I don't know, change into it or something."
Caleb laughed, "that would be pretty cool."
'Maybe you can,' said Pennator.
'No, I don't think so,' replied Caleb, 'That would just be, I don't know, but it would hurt a lot.'
'Yeah, your right,' replied Pennator, mentally shivering.
"You were talking to him again," said Jack with a smile.
"Ha?" said Caleb looking at Jack.
"You were talking to him again," said Jack, "I was saying something but you just fazed out."
Caleb laughed, "I tend to do that a lot."
Jack laughed as well, "Definitly."
They sat there in silence for a bit before Caleb said, "Hey, we're going for a walk later this afternoon, you want to come?"
Jack shook his head, "Sorry, have to go and do something."
Caleb nodded, "See you tomorrow then?"
Jack nodded, "Yep."
With that the two got off the fence, Jack went to his houre while Caleb made his way to his. The family were going to a mountain up near there house. It had a huge cliff at one side that Caleb loved to stand on and gaze out into the sky. For some reason he wasn't afraid of hights, and loved proving it.
They all got into the car. Caleb had three younger siblings, two brothers and one sister. His two brothers were Zac and Conor. Zac was the elder of the two and had curly blond hair, the two were often mistaken for one another. His sister, Jade, was the youngest out of all of them, although Conor and her were twins. She had blond hair and blue eyes, all of them did in fact.
They made it to the hill without any trouble. SInce the day with the two men, Caleb had made a habit of looking carefully at anyone they passed from the car, trying to see if they were the men he had seen.
They all pilled out of the car, the two twins rushed towards the hill. It was a long climb and they would be tired by the time they got to the top. Caleb helped his mum with a bag of snacks, and they started to make there way up the hill.
The others went up ahead, and Caleb fell behind. He had a habit of suddenly going into a thought mode, and just thinking of things that happened. It didn't help that Pennator did the same thing. Both of there thoughts went to the men that had chased him.
'I wonder who they were, and who was Antylor?' said Caleb.
'I don't know,' replied Pennator, 'But I already don't like him.'
'Ha! You got that right,' said Caleb with a smile, 'We haven't done anything to him, we have never seen him before, why would he want us?'
'Some things we will never know,' replied Pennator, faking a wise voice, 'And I hope this will be one of them.'
The two started laughing. Suddenly a twig snapped behind them. Caleb reacted instantly. He stepped on a stick in front of him, and it landed in his hand. He turned around, holding it out in front. There was no one there.
'Your being paranoid, but nice reaction time,' said Pennator.
'Thanks,' replied Caleb, but he wasn't convinced.
Caleb continued to walk. The others were far ahead and he hurried to catch up. Caleb heard a footstep and spun around to see someone jump into a bush. Caleb through the stick like a spear, right through the bush. He heard a curse.
Caleb picked up a rock, just as the man revealed himself. He eyed Caleb with a angry expression.
"Hello there," he said, this was the man with the beard.
"What do you want?" said Caleb, bringing up the rock.
"We want you," said the man, "And there is no way your going to escape us, not this time."
Caleb gritted his teeth, his senses on there max. He knew that there were two men, and he was keeping an ear out for the other one. He heard it, a breath behind him. He spun around and through the rock full force. The man behind him ducked just in time, but the rock still clipped his head. He growled in anger.
Caleb sprinted past the man, picking up another rock as he went. The others were far ahead now and wouldn't even notice what was happening. He looked back to see the two men chasing him again.
'Through the rock!' said Pennator.
Caleb spun around and through it at them. They dodged quite easily. Caleb continued to run up the mountain. The watch on his arm had beeped three times, but he was running up a mountain, he wasn't surprised that he was going slower.
The men were still catching up.
'Damn, how are they so fast!' thought Caleb.
He didn't no what to do. His speed had always been his advantage above everything else. He was strong, but he hardly ever used that, and he had no doubt that these people were a lot stronger. He bent down and picked up another rock. The only thing he could do was outwit them, but how could he do that with all the bushes around. He could try to hide but he didn't think he had a far enough lead.
He looked back to see the men were almost catching him. He chucked the rock, catching the closer man in his stomach. The man gasped for air and his partner ran into him. Caleb laughed for a second, then turned back, only to find he had sprinted right passed his family... and towards the edge of the cliff.
He couldn't stop himself, and there was no wall he could jump off this time. He purposfully tripped over, trying to slow himself. He bounced once against the ground and went over the edge of the cliff. He heard a scream from behind him, then someone yell his name.
He gulped as the air rushed passed his face. The ground was getting closer and closer. Unlike when the heroes in the books are about to die, he didn't feel at peice, or at all satisfied. He couldn't think of anything except AAAAAAHHHHHH!
Just as he was about to hit the ground he closed his eyes and yelled, "PENNATOR HELP ME!"
