Chapter 11: Poison
The two dragons carefully made there way through the tube towards the main hall. They had decided not to fly, if they were scene Recon could always say that Pennator had badly injured his wing and couldn’t fight or fly anymore.
‘Do you trust him?’ asked Caleb, he was still sceptical about the whole idea.
‘Yes, he has been the only friend I’ve had here,’ replied Pennator, making sure he kept low to the tunnel.
Recon’s dark colour helped him camouflage against the dark walls of the tunnel. Pennator’s red colour stood out like a light in a dark room, so he had to make himself as invisible as possible.
They made it to the end without much trouble, and peeked over the edge into that grand hall. As usual there was a dark cloud of black dragons milling around the room, doing whatever they thought was important. One thing that Pennator noted was that they seem more hurried the usual, flying back here and there. Occasionally a dragon carrying another one, which was injured, through the room.
“Looks like the attack has already started,” explained Recon, taking in what was around them, “Now we need to get to the front of this place, which would be a lot easier if you were a darkfire dragon.”
Pennator shrugged, he couldn’t choose what type of dragon he was. They sat there for a moment, trying to figure out how to get through all these dragons without causing to much of a hustle.
“Do they except humans?” asked Pennator, coming up with an idea.
Recon looked at him strangely, “Some, they need to have a special token of identification though.”
“Can you get your talons on one of those?” said Pennator, the perfect idea coming to his mind.
“Yes, it wouldn’t be to difficult, but why?” realisation shot through Recon’s eyes, “Oh yeah, you’re a shape shifter aren’t you. Wow, I can’t believe I didn’t ask you about that before now.”
The firedrake smiled at him, “Just grab one of those tokens and I can make it through as a human.”
Recon nodded his head, “Just stay here, I shouldn’t be to long.”
With that he opened his wings and flew into the void of dark dragons. Pennator lay there, waiting for him and making sure other dragons didn’t see him. It took a few minutes but eventually Recon made it back with something clutched in his talons.
He flew into the tunnel, pretending not to notice Pennator, before doubling back and landing beside him.
“What was that?” Pennator asked when Recon crawled back to his side.
“Just making sure I wasn’t seen landing in the tunnel, usually dragons just fly through,” he said.
Pennator nodded, “You got it?”
Recon opened his talons revealing a small circular badge. It had a small dragon insignia in the middle, breathing what looked like dark fire.
“Now shape shift and put this on,” said Recon.
Pennator slid back a couple of metres, so that the dragons outside didn’t see the flash of light as he transformed. Caleb put pinned the emblem on his shirt. It was certainly heavier then it looked.
Recon was gaping in amazement; he had never seen a shape shifter before, being on the account that there were probably only two in the world.
“You stopped staring yet,” said Caleb dryly, he still didn’t fully trust Recon.
‘Be nice, he’s our only way out,’ Pennator rebuked.
‘I know, but after what’s been happening here, it would take a lot for me to trust anyone,’ replied Caleb.
“Hey, earth to human, you coming or not,” said Recon spreading his wings, “Get on my back, I’ll carry you.”
Caleb hesitated, then climbed onto Recon’s back. He shifted into a comfortable position, just between Recon’s neck and wings, and then the dragon took off. He flew through the cloud, making a special effort to avoid being hit by any dragons.
They got through without to much trouble, hardly anyone even looked at them. Instead of going the usual way to the cells they flew to the huge double doors at one side of the room.
He landed there and Caleb jumped off his back. Riding a dragon wasn’t as bad as he thought, although a little bumpy.
‘Hey, we can’t help it,’ said Pennator, catching wind of his thoughts.
The two walked through the door and into another huge corridor.
“What’s with this castle and all these halls?” stated Caleb.
“I don’t know,” replied Recon, “It’s just the way it was built.”
They trudged through the corridor, keeping a careful eye out for any more dragons.
“Where are they all?” asked Caleb eventually.
“Most of the dragons have probably taken the upper pathways to the towers,” replied Recon, “That’s where the greatest defensive positions are. Were we are going is a door close to the front gate, if we do that then they can break in and get us out quickly.”
Caleb nodded. They turned through a door, then another door, until Caleb spotted a huge gate in front of them. There were about ten dragons there, getting ready for anything that was going to come through.
Recon cursed and hid behind the wall, pushing Caleb back with his tail. He complied without complaint.
“What’s wrong?” asked Caleb.
“Transform, we’re going to take out these idiots,” he said.
Caleb widened his eyes, “What?”
“Didn’t you here me,” replied Recon, “If we don’t take them out we won’t be able to rendezvous with Terrador at the chosen place.”
“Why can’t we just sneek past them?” asked Caleb.
Recon snorted, “I’m a dragon, how on earth am I going to do that. If I walk in there they’ll think I’m trying to escape. Only specially ordered dragons defend this post, and know I can’t lie about it either, but I’ll explain that later.”
Caleb sighed, “Fine.”
He shape shifted. Pennator stood behind him, waiting for his mark.
“Okay… now!” he yelled, jumping out.
One dragon turned around in surprise, but was met with a face full of dark fire. He was blasted through the other dragons and into the gate. Pennator followed Recon’s example and let loose an inferno of fire at them.
Roars of pain echoed through the halls as the dragons stumbled for cover. Recon leapt at one, and using his bladed tail, sliced one’s throat. Pennator wasn’t far behind, using his wing to hit a dragon in the stomach.
The dragon groaned in pain, and Pennator’s claws cut threw it eye and into it’s brain. His first kill. Drawing his claws back he quickly swung around to block a fireball from another dragon.
He opened fire under his wings, setting anything wooden over that side on fire. The dragons were snarling in pain from where he had launched the fire. Recon jumped to the side of another dragon and sliced open its head easily.
A dragon leapt onto Pennator’s back, forcing him to the ground. Pennator snarled and stabbed the dragons tail with his. The dragon growled in slight pain, then whimpered in horror. It fell of his back and onto the ground, groaning. He quickly ended its life, before turning to the other dragons. That was two kills.
Pennator whipped his tail around slicing another dragons face open. He blocked another strike, then growled in pain as another hit him in the stomach with its wing, flipping him over.
He struck at the dragon with his tail, forcing them back, before managing to get back to his feet. He leapt at them, breath fire at the same time. He swung his wings and it burst into flames, smashing the dragon in the head. It was knocked out instantly. Another dragon blasted him in the side with a burst of darkfire, causing Pennator to shield himself with his wings and growl in pain.
Recon was busy fighting of two more dragons over his side; he suddenly leapt at one, and sliced at its head, giving it a scratch. Pennator shot a fireball at them, which they dodged, but it was all the distraction he needed. He leapt at them and used his claws to scratch at ones neck.
The other tackled him away from the one he was fighting. They both landed in a mass of blood, fire and talons. Pennator groaned and hit the dragon with his wing. It jumped backwards and sliced at his neck with his tail.
The firedrake dodged so that it scraped across his face, opening an oozing line of blood across it. He snarled in pain and blasted the dragon with his fire. It growled and threw up its wings to protect itself.
‘Shape shift!’ yelled Caleb.
He did, reappearing in a flash of bright light, Caleb jumped backwards, dodging a strike from the other dark dragon, and the two dragons he was fighting growled in surprise. He took to that to his advantage and leapt back at them, shape shifting into Pennator during the leap.
The fire dragon landed on top of one of them, and dug his claws into the dragons eyes. It screeched in agony, and attempted to through him off. Pennator hung on grimly until the dragon stopped moving and fell to the floor.
The other dragon was slow to react. It jumped at Pennator, dragging him off the other dragon and tried to snap at his throat. Pennator blasted in the face with his fire, before stabbing it with his tail. The dragon groaned, before realising what had happened. It jumped of him and started to growl uncertainly. It looked worryingly at the wound Pennator had inflicted and groaned, collapsing to the ground. Pennator just watched in horror as the scene before him unfolded.
The dragon groaned again, its wings drooped to the side. Recon suddenly leapt at the dragon and stabbed its head with his claws. Pennator growled in surprise.
“What was that?” he asked.
“It’s cruel to let a dragon die of fire dragon poisoning,” explained Recon, “No dragon deserves a death as painful as that.”
“Oh,” said Pennator, feeling slightly guilty, he had forgotten all about his poisonous tail.
Recon smiled at him, “It’s alright, just don’t make the same mistake again.”
He suddenly rolled to the side as a dark fireball shot passed them. Pennator growled in anger as another twenty dark dragons came around the corner.
“Well this sucks,” said Recon, backing up.
Pennator nodded in agreement.
There was a sudden boom at the gate behind them, causing all the dragons in the room to jump in surprise. There was another one, and suddenly the gate exploded. A chunk of it was unlucky enough to find its way into Pennators temple, and he fell into the void.
