Chapter 10: Training

“Let’s start with seeing what you can do,” said Recon, getting into a low position his wings spread out.

“What?” asked Pennator confused.

“Go.”

Recon launched himself at Pennator, swinging his wing towards him, folding it so the elbow of the wing was aimed at his head, like a punch. The fire dragon didn’t have any time to even register what was happening. His head was slammed onto the ground, before then he was hit back as Recon followed up with an uppercut.

Pennator growled in pain, stumbling back and putting up his wing to defend himself.

“Come on, you can do better then that, surely,” said Recon.

Pennator snarled and suddenly swung his wing around in a wide ark towards Recon. The dark dragon danced backwards, neatly avoiding the strike. He jumped forward again and struck at Pennator’s face with his claws. The hit scored, creating three long grooves through his face.

Pennator instantly struck back with his wing, hitting Recon in the face. The firedrake quickly jumped into the air and flapped his wings, taking him over Recon. Recon turned around and shot a dark fireball into Pennator’s head, causing a mini explosion and the dragon to roar in pain.

Recon pounced towards Pennator. He landed on top, and held Pennator’s head down with his claws. Pennator started to struggle, trying to through Recon off. The black dragon held in easily, waiting for Pennator to exhaust himself. He struggled for nearly five minutes, before giving in.

“Pathetic,” said Recon, “Come on, one of our lowly trained dragons would have done better.”

“Hey, it’s not my fault,” retorted Pennator instantly, “I’ve never fought before.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, unless you count that fight with two humans and the fight with that other dragon before. I’ve also hardly been around for almost twelve years.”

Recon nodded his head slightly, “This is going to be harder then I thought. Let’s start from the beginning. Can you form fire?”

Pennator twisted his head in slight confusion, “What?”

“Form fire, you know, like into a single stream, or fireballs,” said Recon.

“Stream, no, fireball, I think,” said Pennator.

“Show me,” said Recon, standing to the side.

Pennator took a deep breath and took a quick breath of fire. Instead of a fireball shooting out, a deformed fireball shot out. It petered out once it had gone ten metres.

Recon couldn’t help himself. He cracked up laughing. Pennator glared at him until he stopped.

“Sorry,” laughed Recon, “It’s just… that really was pathetic.”

Pennator growled at him. He opened his mouth and took a sharp, outward breath. A perfectly formed fireball shot out of his mouth, causing Recon to growl in surprise and put up his wing in defence.

He looked over his wing in surprise, “Nice… shot.”

Pennator grinned a toothy grin at him.

“Okay, now that that’s done, let’s do a bit more sparring,” said Recon.

They spent the rest of the day continuously fighting. Recon gave him a few pointers along the way, like the fact that his tail was very poisonous, and his wings could defend against most attacks.

By the end of the day the firedrake was exhausted. He collapsed to the ground, his muscles burning. Recon was also mildly exhausted, and as he watched Pennator he reminded himself that this was the dragon’s first training lesson.

He heard a noise coming from the pipe and looked up to see the two dark dragons fly out of the tube. They landed on either side of him. Recon adopted a snarl onto his face, looking down at Pennator.

The other two smiled slightly when they saw him.

“How’d he do,” said one of them.

“Alright,” snarled Recon, “For a dragon that hasn’t had any training whatsoever.”

The dark dragon barked a laugh, “That’s unfair, you get to beat this guy up continuously while we have the tougher stuff.”

Recon shrugged, “Hey, what do you expect. They always put me with the worst, and I make them the best.”

“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” replied the dragon, “I guess it’s time to get him back to his cell. If he can even get up.”

Pennator snarled slightly at that comment and took up the challenge. He picked himself up from the ground and gazed defiantly at the two dragons. One of them nudged Recon.

“It seems he does have some fire left in him after all,” he said, then turned back to Pennator, “Come on, now you have to get yourself into the air. We haven’t got all day.”

Pennator raised his aching wings and took a flap, groaning as he did so. Even with that, he managed to get himself into the air. The two dark dragons took there places on front and side of him.

Pennator managed to get through the tube without to much trouble, but once he was out in the open he found it hard to keep his eyes from closing. He felt so tired.

‘Come on Pennator,’ encouraged Caleb, ‘just to the cell. Then you can sleep.’

Pennator only nodded. They made it to a place where they could land and the fire dragon all but collapsed onto the floor. He stayed like that for almost five seconds before one of the dark dragons poked him with his sharp tail.

Pennator got up grudgingly and walked back to his cell. Once they had locked the door he instantly went to the round stone bed and collapsed onto it, before falling asleep.

The next morning he was woken up with a huge banging on the steel door. His head shot from underneath his wing.

“Come on, get up!” yelled a voice from outside, “We haven’t got all day.”

‘That seems to be their favourite catch fraze,’ thought Pennator.

‘It is,’ replied Caleb with a little bit of humour.

Pennator struggled from his bed, and groaned out loud as he felt all the muscles in his body stretch. He rolled off the stone tablet and replied to the voice at the door.

“I’m up,” he yelled to the guards outside.

They opened the door and chucked in a small deer, “You got five minutes to eat. Then you come with us.”

Pennator quickly scoffed down the deer happily. They took him back through all the stone corridors, past the large hall with all the dragons, and into the training arena.

Recon was waiting there. He smiled when he saw Pennator come through with labouring wing beats. Once the others left Recon spoke to him.

“Bit saw from yesterday are we,” said Recon.

Pennator nodded his head.

“Well then, to bad, you should have stretched afterwards,” he said, “We’re going to be doing much the same as yesterday. Sparring and getting you worked up.”

The fire dragon groaned inwardly.

“Begin,” said Recon.

They went at it for another hour before Recon decided to launch a stream of dark fire at Pennator. He put up his wings in defence and the stream hit them. This went on for about a minute, before the fire stopped coming.

Pennator was about to attack back when Recon stopped him.

“Don’t do that again,” he said.

“Do what again?” asked Pennator.

“Block a stream of fire like that. It has been known to rip wings off instantly,” he said, “Whenever a stream of fire comes at you, match it with your own, or dodge. Never block it with your wings.”

Pennator nodded and they continued. As the day came to a close, Pennator was still exhausted, but he felt good. He was now beginning to match Recon in most fights, and sometimes even won. Recon was extremely surprised at his rapid improvement.

“Two days, and you’re already better then most dragons I know,” he would keep saying.

The next morning he woke up with a start, and rolled out of his bed. His relief that his muscles weren’t sore was the first thing he noticed. The guards came about ten minutes later with his breakfast.

They lead him to the arena, where Recon was waiting again. They started of as normal with a small spar. Recon managed to get him down in an impossible to break hold, before letting him up.

“Are we going to do anything different today,” asked Pennator.

“Maybe, depends,” he replied, “We may even be able to break you out of here.”
