Find Yourself

Wilhelm Hartmann was sitting on his sleeping bag gazing at the book he held in his hands. The texture of the book cover was rough on his hands. Tears slowly streamed down his face falling onto the cover of the book.

Wilhelm thought to himself out of guilt. "I don't know what to do. What can I do? I can't tell her the truth about who I am. At least not yet."

He heard a soft rustling of footsteps outside. Quickly wiping his tears away he looked up and saw Koralin entering his tent. Koralin stared into Wilhelm's eyes noticing unshed tears in them. Sitting down in front of Wilhelm she looked at him with slight concern. Wilhelm averted his gaze slightly and placed the book down beside him.

"What's wrong Mr. Hartmann?" she asked with concern.

"I'm going through a lot Miss Assing. It's hard for me to explain what I'm going through to you," he replied while trying not to cry.

Koralin shuffled closer to Wilhelm and wrapped her arms around him. Wilhelm held back his tears and lowered his head onto Koralins shoulder.

"I do wish that I could tell you, Miss Assing. But it is very difficult for me to explain,"

"I understand Mr. Hartmann,"

"I'm missing my brother, my wife and my children.
"I left them behind all so I could get away from the Soviets.
"I don't know if they are alright..."

"I'm sure that they are alright Mr. Hartmann,"

Tears flowed out of Wilhelm's eyes, and he sobbed softly. Koralin gently rubbed Wilhelm's back to attempt to comfort him. Eventually, Wilhelm stopped sobbing, and Koralin let go of him and wiped his tears away gently.

"You seem to possibly be dealing with a lot more than just missing your family,"

"I'm afraid of what might happen to my brother.
"He is still inside East Berlin. He refused to leave with me.
"I don't know what the Soviets would do to a former Nazi scientist,"

"I understand that you are worried about him. You love and care about him a lot,"

"What if they kill him!?"

"Mr. Hartmann I'm sure that your brother is safe. He seems smart and he might have escaped like you did,"

Wilhelm whimpered softly and he wrapped his arms around Koralin and held her in a gentle embrace.

"I have to go now, Mr. Hartmann. But I'm sure that your brother is safe wherever he may be," she said while getting up off the ground.

Koralin exited the tent leaving Wilhelm alone. Wilhelm placed his hands over his eyes and dragged his legs closer to the rest of his body. More tears flowed out of his eyes as if he was trying to let out some of the guilt that was bottled up inside. His shoulders shook with quiet sobs. Eventually, he stopped sobbing and removed his hands from his eyes. His vision was blurry and his eyes were warm and red. His throat felt scratchy like sandpaper. Blinking a few times he managed to focus his vision.

Grabbing his fishing rod he got up off the ground although his limbs felt heavy as if they were being weighed down by invisible weights. Exiting his tent he gazed up at the overcast sky which reminded him of how lost he felt as if he was stuck in the clouds himself unsure where to go. Gazing down at the town he began to make his way to the wharf. Walking down the busy streets of Emden he lowered his gaze slightly trying to ignore the people who walked by him trying to feel as if he didn't exist.

Reaching the wharf he wandered close to the edge and gazed out at the ocean. Multiple small sailboats rode over the small waves. Wilhelm's coat gently flowed in the chilly ocean breeze. Casting his fishing line out into the vast ocean he patiently waited for a bite.

The sun was setting over Emden. Fiery hues filled the sky and Wilhelm stood there watching another day come to a close. Suddenly he heard footsteps creaking on the wood behind him. Turning around he expected to see Koralin but instead, he saw a man who was slightly older than he was. The man had grey eyes, short dark brown hair and a scar on his cheek. The man was wearing a grey overcoat, grey suit, black tie, white blouse, grey pants and jet black shoes that were recently polished.

"You seem lost," the man said.

"Who are you?" Wilhelm asked with slight confusion.

"I had a feeling that you would ask that.
"I knew that you probably wouldn't remember me after that certain incident in Hannover.
"But I'm Lennard Bain former Nazi Captain. I saved your life from those two communists,"

Wilhelm's eyes widened and he stepped back a little bit. Lennard Bain stared at Wilhelm with slight concern. Wilhelm felt as if the world around him had suddenly paused. He couldn't think of how to respond. He just stood there frozen from shock.

"You must remember what happened by the way that you are acting,"

Wilhelm still stood there in silence.

"I don't know why those communists were after you. But I had to do something,"

Wilhelm is standing outside a bar drinking a bottle of beer. The pitch black streets are only lit up by some streetlights. Suddenly he hears footsteps behind him and someone almost shoves him into a wall from behind. Causing him to drop his bottle of beer onto the ground. The bottle shatters immediately spilling the beer into a small puddle. Turning around Wilhelm notices two men whose faces are obscured by black masks which only show their eyes, mouth and nose. The men are also wearing all black clothing with small Soviet insignias on them. One of them is holding a small black pistol which is pointing at Wilhelm.

"You escaped East Berlin. Very bold idea for such a man of high intelligence," The man with the gun says.

"You don't understand. I don't want anything to do with the Soviet Union," Wilhelm replies.

"We want your information on the bomb Heisenberg. Now don't be so stupid and hand it over,"

"I don't have that kind of information on me. Besides I'm not the man you are looking for,"

The man with the gun walks forward slightly and Wilhelm immediately backs up against the wall. Feeling his heart thumping in his chest. He wants to run but he knows that if he runs it might be the end. Tears start streaming down his face due to him knowing that this might be his last day alive.

"You are such a liar! You are the man we are looking for so hand over the information!"

"Please I don't have the information on me..."

"Well, where is the information then!?"

"I'm not going to tell you where it is. I don't want it to end up in the wrong hands!"

"If you don't tell us where it is we will kill you! So stop being so foolish and tell us where it is!"

Wilhelm closes his eyes awaiting his death. The man with the gun walks closer to Wilhelm. Suddenly the sound of a gunshot rings out throughout the street. The bullet hits the brick wall of the bar. Wilhelm opens his eyes collapses onto the ground wraps his arms around himself and drags his legs closer to the rest of his body. Looking around he notices Lennard Bain standing a short distance away aiming his silver pistol at the man with the gun. Wilhelm's body tremors and he cries and whimpers out of fear. The man with the gun then looks over at Lennard Bain.

"Who are you and why are you interrupting our business!?"

"My name is Lennard Bain. Formerly a Captain in the German Army,"

"It seems we have two Nazis to deal with here,"

"The man you are threatening doesn't seem like a Nazi. Besides what are two communists doing here threatening a random citizen?"

"You don't understand this man has important information the Soviet Union requires,"

"I doubt that. So I suggest that you leave him alone. Unless you want to do things the hard way,"

The two men glance at each other and then back at Lennard Bain. But they don't back away from Wilhelm. Lennard slowly approaches them still aiming his gun at them. The man with the gun aims his gun at Lennard and holds his finger on the trigger with a shaky hand. Lennard then stops a metre away and smirks.

"Seems you are scared young man. You want to shoot. But you are too afraid to commit to it,"

"I'm not scared to kill someone!"

"Well go ahead try and shoot me then,"

"Fine, you asked for it,"

The man then fires his pistol causing a loud crack to echo throughout the street. Along with a small bright flash from the bullet being fired. But the bullet misses Lennard and ends up hitting a concrete wall across the street.

"Seems you are afraid of killing someone,"

"I am not afraid I just missed!"

"I doubt that. Now I suggest that you get out of here,"

"No, we are not leaving!"

Lennard aims his gun at the ground in front of the two men and fires his pistol. The crack of the bullet hitting the concrete sounds like thunder. Wilhelm covers his ears due to the deafening sound of the gunshot. The two men back off while Lennard reloads his pistol.

"Fine, we will leave,"

"Good. Now enjoy your night gentlemen," Lennard says while putting his pistol onto his belt.

The two men quickly rush down the street. Lennard approaches Wilhelm who is lying on the ground in the fetal position with his hands still covering his ears.

"What's your name?"

"Wilhelm Hartmann,"

"Do you know why those men were after you?"

"They mistook me for another man. They mistook me for Werner Heisenberg,"

"Well then Mr. Hartmann I'm Lennard Bain. I shall offer you to stay at my place tonight since you need somewhere safe,"

"Thank you,"

"Are you alright? You seem a bit out of it,"

"I'm not alright Mr. Bain. I feel lost. I am unsure about my future,"

"I understand. I felt lost once. But I found myself again. You might have to find yourself again,"

"How do I find myself?"

"Accept who you are,"

"I don't know if I can accept who I am,"

Lennard walked over to Wilhelm placed his hand on Wilhelm's shoulder and smiled a little bit.

"Accepting who you are takes time.
"But I know that you will eventually figure out how to accept who you are.
"I know that it took me a long time to find myself again after the war,"

"War changes people. It changed me in a way even though I wasn't fighting in it,"

"Yes, it changed a lot of people. I suppose I better head home. Enjoy your evening Mr. Hartmann,"

"You too Mr. Bain. And thank you for saving my life,"

"Your welcome," Lennard said as he started walking away.

Wilhelm glanced over at the horizon which was growing darker and the stars were appearing in the sky. He wandered off the wharf and made his way down the street which was now empty and all that could be heard was the sound of the ocean tides coming in and crashing against the shore. Eventually, he reached his tent walked back inside and placed his fishing rod down on the ground. Sitting down on his sleeping bag he picked up the book and gazed at the cover.

Wilhelm thought to himself out of frustration. "How can I accept who I am? I almost ended up creating a terrible weapon that could have killed thousands of people."

Wilhelm put the book down beside his sleeping bag opened the briefcase full of his personal belongings and grabbed a small box of matches. Lighting a match he opened up his lantern and lit it. Blowing on the match he tossed it onto the ground and closed his lantern up. Grabbing the book he started to read it. Carefully scanning everything on each page.

Wilhelm thought to himself with a sense of hopefulness. "Maybe reading this book that Miss Assing gave me might help me find myself again."
