Chapter 24- flatline (+very important AN)
NARRATIVE VOICE
John and the Washington's remain in Alexander's room for the next few hours, each taking turns to go get coffee or go to the toilet. It's around 8:00pm when Doctor Shepherd is doing his last rounds that a long beep emits from the machine attached to Alexander's chest.
Flatline.
He immediately hits the alert button on the wall, shouting "CODE BLUE! GET A CRASH CART!"
John and the Washington's are pulled out of his room, hearing Dereks shouting along with nurses and doctors alike working simultaneously on the scrawny boy.
"Roll on my count, O'Malley. Ready, 1, 2, 3!" Derek commands and the boy is pulled onto his side, a board is slid under his back. They lay him back down, starting compressions immediately. A few minor 'crack's can be heard as Derek pumps the boys chest, the flatline tone still ringing out deafeningly.
Another doctor, his name 'Doctor Sloan', attaches a manual pump to the breathing tube and squeezes the yellow pump in time with Shepherds compressions.
"CHARGE TO 200!" Shepherd shouts, taking two paddles from a younger nurse, an intern called 'Lexi Grey", and raises them above Alexander's chest.
"CLEAR!"
The boys back arches as the puddles send a shock through his body, hitting the board again with a slight 'thump'.
John struggles, pulling against the person holding him back, trying anything to get in the room and stay with the boy.
"John, John, stop fighting it. You're okay. We're okay. Alexander will be okay." George assures, voice breaking slightly as he hears the sound of his sons flesh hitting the bed again. John turns to him.
"HE'S NOT OKAY! HE HAS NO ONE IN THERE- NO ONE! HE HAS LOST ALMOST EVERYONE IN HIS LIFE ALREADY AND YOU EXPECT ME TO LET HIM DIE ALONE?! LIKE FUCK I WILL! JUST LET ME BE WITH HIM! LET ME HELP HIM CROSS OVER!" He screams, fear evident as his voice cracks several times.
"He won't die, John. He won't." Another shock.
"CHARGE TO 350!"
"You don't know that." He growled, although he knows that he's not angry with George- he's angry with... Well he doesn't really know.
He's not angry at Alexander, this isn't his fault.
He's not angry with the Washington's- this isn't their fault.
He was angry with God.
He was angry with Alex's captors.
He was angry with himself.
Derek presses the paddles to Alexander's chest once more, his back arching like a bow, before the heart monitor begins beeping once again.
"ALEX? ALEXANDER?!" John screams, finally pulling away from the people who were holding him. He barrels towards the room, dodging nurses and doctors as they leave.
Derek moves back, a huge sigh of relief exuding from him. John barrels into the room, almost taking down the crash cart before settling next to the bed and clasping the scrawny boys hand tightly. He wasn't sure how he's grown so fond of the boy in less than a few days- unsure as to how he's grown so attached. The boy hand even spoken to him within those few days. But here he was, sat as his bedside, silent tears slipping from his eyes.
The nurses and doctors fluttered about, performing any minor procedures they needed, inserting a chest tube, listening to his breath sounds and feeling for broken ribs. Derek stayed, though, retiring to a chair in the corner of the room.
Once all of the nurses and doctors had exited, Derek still remained. George lay his hand against his sons forehead, gently running a hand over the boys hair.
"You're still here, Doctor Shepherd?" Martha questioned, voice slightly hoarse.
"I'm sure dinner can wait. I'll stay the night, you guys can get some rest." And before he's given anyone the chance to reply, he'd paged his wife, Meredith. She ran into the room mere moments later, head snapping from the patients to her husband.
"I'm staying here, keep an eye on Alexander. Will you be okay telling Nina about what happened?" He asked as she came and patted his shoulder affectionately.
"Yeah, that's fine. Can I see his file?" She recurved the folder from her husband, reading over it swiftly.
And, though the events of the day had been traumatic, everyone was okay.

Hi! It's been a loooooonnnnggggg time since I've updated, but I've kinda lost the motivation to write this story. I don't like the plot or the speed, so ill probably discontinue it. But, for now, have this chapter that I wrote ages ago.
Bye!
