Chapter 26~ Mission Impossible
Time is passing quickly. One minute seems to go by in a second. I lay motionless in my bed just waiting.
I had asked the nurse that came to check on me earlier how I had gotten here. She gave me a funny look and probably things I have amnesia or something. She answered me though and told me the lady I was with, Eva, survived the crash too and called the ambulance. She made it out okay with minimal scratches and a couple bruises. She was discharged two days ago. The nurse also explained that at night there was a lady down the hallway who would come help me if I needed anything else.
She blocks the way from me getting out of here. I check my phone once more. It is 10:05pm. I'm on the third floor or else I would jump out of the window. My plan is to distract the lady at the front desk and lure her away from where she sits perched, so I can make my escape. Easier said than done.
What if I can't do this? What if I can't make it on time? What if Eva is already dead? A series of what if questions float through my head. I wipe my sweaty palms on the hospital gown. I could think of all the possible scenarios and they could all never happen. By thinking of them I am wasting time.
I stand up from my bed and peak from behind the wall of my room. Luckily, I'm in a private room or else this would be so much harder with someone watching my every move. The lady sits leaned back with her head draping over the back. I crouch on all fours and crawl down the long empty hallway. There is minimal light and it's so eerie it reminds me of a horror movie. My hospital gown drags on the floor occasionally snagging on my hands and feet. I feel cold metal press against my thigh with each movement.
I reach the end of the hallway. I rest on my knees and get a better view of the lady at the desk. Is she sleeping? I cautiously approach her and wave my hand in front of her face. Nothing. Wow I guess this just got easier for me. Behind her desk is an elevator. I press the button and bite my lip as it rattles up. I glance behind me and hear her faintly snore. I breathe out in relief. Once the elevator door rings signalling its arrival I press the button and let it go down empty after pressing the main floor button. I run to the emergency elevator and go up a flight and peak down below me. Just as I planned the lady wakes up and rushes down the stairs to the main level to intercept the elevator and whoever she thinks is in it. I follow her down at a safe distance. She disappears into the main level and I count to 20 before I sneak out. The coast is clear.
Beside the stairs door is a map of the main level. There is the main entrance that is right next to yet another secretary. There is an unguarded fire exit down the hall to the right. I stealthily tip toe down the hall with my head turned to look behind my shoulder. I make it out of the building uncaught. The cold air nips at my body which is instantly covered in goosebumps. The nightgown barely protects me from the weather. It has long sleeves but only reaches my knees.
I didn't think this far through. I can't call my dad because he would definitely take me back to my room. Vicky is also in the hospital and Eva is with the stalker. Part of the reason I have to go. I was driven here by ambulance, so it's not like my car is an option. The hotel is too far to walk to and I wouldn't make it on time. I only have one option; to call Jace.
With shaking fingers I dial his number. He picks up on the first ring.
"Oh my god. What trouble are you in? Do you need me to call the cops? Where are you? I can rescue you," he rambles.
"No I just got out of the hospital. I need you to come pick me up and take me to the hotel. Please hurry," I say before hanging up. My heart races. It's 10:35pm. I stand in the parking and rub my arms violently trying to regain body heat. At 10:42pm Jace pulls up in his truck. I climb in without wasting a second. Time is of the essence. He adjusts the temperature control, so hot air blasts through the vents. He doesn't start to drive yet. I open my mouth to speak, but he cuts me off.
"What were you thinking? You could have frozen to death. That isn't a plan," he yells. He hits his hand off the steering wheel causing me to squirm in my seat.
"Seriously Jace you can yell at me any other time but now. I'm in a time crunch, so if you don't mind I would like to get going. I didn't call you here to yell at me. I only have an hour and 15 minutes to get there," I yell back equally as harsh.
"This is my truck and I decide when we go and when we don't. You listen to me for once. I am not letting you run in there and get yourself killed so Eva won't die. Do you even have a plan?"
"Yes," I lie. No I don't. Not even a thought as to what I'm going to do when I get in there. My main priority right now is to make it to that room on time. I'll figure out the rest when I get there. Maybe I can reason with her. If the situation gets as bad as I think it will then I have a knife I slipped into my underwear from when they served me dinner. It's a weapon and I can protect myself.
"Jace I will get to that room with or without your help. If I have to go through you I will," I warn. I'm done waiting.
"Then I guess you're going to have to do it without it. I'm driving you home." He starts the ignition.
I'm so sorry Jace, but don't say I didn't warn you.
I grab his hair with my hand and smash his head against the steering wheel twice. I took him by surprise and he didn't put up a fight. He falls unconscious and blood slowly drips from his nose. I hop out of the truck and drag his body near the hospital. Someone will find him when he wakes up. I return to the car and drive away without looking back. I know I was harsh, but I have all the time after this is over to apologize and move on. I look up the directions to the hotel on my phone with one hand still on the steering wheel. It is a half hour drive from here to there leaving me with 45 minutes to find the room.
As I speed down the highways I run multiple red lights and stop signs to ensure I will make it there on time. I make the final turn and the hotel comes into view. It is a three story building which appears to have been built in the early 1900's. It has many white beams and the multiple windows are broken. The old chipped away yellow paint has black graffiti scribbled all over it. Moss and ivy cover the sides of the building. It would have been gorgeous if it was still in use. As I drive in a no trespassing sign welcomes me.
Right on schedule I think to myself. I pull out my phone before I enter the building and re read the message. Is it really Eliza who is doing this? What if I'm wrong and it's someone else completely. My heart hammers against my chest. I have to assume Eva is correct and it is Eliza. I slowly climb up the steps. Immediately the building intimidates me. It's so tall. It reminds me of tower of terror. I swallow my fear. My hand pushes open the old rotted wooden door which release a loud creak.
I hesitantly step in. The first step is to take her birthday and subtract the anniversary. Since we are twins our birthday is the same. April 28th. Then subtract 10 because that's this years anniversary. we get 18 then add 18 and 18. The room number is 54. I have no idea where that is. It could be any level. I have 35 minutes left to find the room.
This place is huge! On the main level is three corridors. I stand in the entryway. I pick the right corridor and it has rooms 1-10. I run down the hallway and scan each number. Nope not there.
I do the same with the other two hallways which have rooms 11-20 and then 21-30. I wish there was a sign that told you what rooms were in which hallway. I guess this building is so old that they didn't have that back then.
I dash up the stairs and am met yet again by another three hallways. One has a giant hole in the floor the other two seem normal.
If I was a psychopath who was possibly trying to murder someone what hallway would I choose? The ones that seem fine or the one with the gaping hole in the middle of the floor.
I'm going to go with the hole.
I walk up to the edge. It's huge. At least my height across and it leads down to the main level. I turn around on my heels. I start to sprint. I hope this works. I propel my body forward and land on the other side. I lose my balance and tumble to the ground. I feel a small cut form on my forehead, but that's the most major thing.
I was right. I chose correctly because I see room 50 on my right. I walk up and down the hallway. where's room 54? I see room 52, 53, then 55. I pace back and forth. There's an unmarked room. Is that it? Her words from before pop into my head about choose incorrectly and she'll kill me. I take a deep breath. I have nothing to lose.
I turn the knob and push the door forward. My heart hammers against my chest. The room has no light and is to dark for my eyes. It takes them a moment to adjust. The window at the end allows moonlight to pour through. On the right is a full length mirror and I can see my body shaking from my nervousness. Further to the right is a Queen sized bed that is covered in cob webs. There is giant window in the center of the back wall and to the left is a table. In the center of the room is a chair with a person sitting on it. Shadows cover their face except their dazzling white smile that is beautiful yet creepy at the same time.
"Why don't you come in and close the door behind you," they say while flicking their hand to the cob web infested table.
"Eliza."
