Chapter 22~ Mama Knows Best
Both Vicky and I are sitting on the edge's of our seats. Literally. Eva returns to the table holding three mugs. She places one in front of each of us. No one touches them or says a word. An awkward silence falls over us.
"Well what are you waiting for!" I burst out allowing my curiosity to get the best of me. Eva doesn't even seem fazed by my sudden outburst. She just smiles sadly at me.
"Marley I don't think you're going to want to hear what I have to say, but you have to know the truth."
Oh man. Here we go again with the lies.
"You know what? I'm sick of everyone lying to me or hiding things from me," I yell while flailing my arms around. Both of them turn to look at me with guilt written on their faces. "The only person who's been honest with me is the same person who has been stalking Vicky and they're psychotic. I'm done with all of you."
I grab my sweater from the floor and stomp to the front of the house. I barely make it into the den when Eva cuts me off blocking me from the door.
"Move Eva. I don't want to hear it," I snap angrily. I try to push her out of my way with my shoulder, but she doesn't budge.
"No please Marley. You need to hear this. Honestly you do. I know things! I can help you," she pleads softly. She looks like she's on the verge of tears. I huff but obey. I take my seat back at the kitchen table and ignore the apologetic look I'm getting from Vicky. Now she knows how I felt when she ignored me for days. I cross my arms against my chest and lean back into my chair. Just because I decided to stay here doesn't mean I'm going to enjoy it.
"It was a long time ago and I had two beautiful daughters. I spent everyday with them watching them grow into the proper young ladies we taught them to be," she smiles fondly at the memory. I don't like where this is going.
"I loved them with all my heart and I still do even to this day. One day I went out to the corner store to go buy some eggs to bake a cake with my children. When I came home I couldn't find either of them at first, but heard their cries from upstairs. I followed one upstairs only to see my husband hanging from the roof. " I really don't like where this is going, but my no words are coming out to stop her. I am flabbergasted.
"The police came to interview what happened and what we were going to do and all that." Her eyes fill with tears as well as mine. "I just wasn't me anymore after Jim died." And with that she started too cry. She choked back a sob and continued.
"I didn't want to see my girls anymore. They looked so much like him they were constant reminders of what I lost. I wasn't ready to be a single mom. I did what I had to do and put them up for adoption. I kept telling myself they would have a better life than what I could give them and that they deserve better. I took them to the orphanage and instantly felt relieved that I wouldn't have to worry about them anymore. But then they made me promise to come back for them. And now I have." She smiles through her tears.
"No," is all I can manage to choke out. She nods with a grin on her face.
"Yes Marley. I am your mother. Your birth mother."
And then my brain exploded. There is no way she can drop this bombshell on me and expect me to be happy about it and hold her hand and sing We are Family.
"No you aren't my mother. A mother loves their child and doesn't abandon them in their time of need. You think it was bad because he was your husband? Try having the man you grew up with, the man you've known your entire life, taken away from you. You may have known him for the same amount of time, but I have known him my entire life. I lost three people at one time."
I don't understand how I haven't recognized her before. But then again it has been 10 years since I last saw her. That also explains why she was so motherly towards me. My eyes narrow and I give her my best death glare.
"No I refuse to accept that. You may have given birth to me, but that doesn't give you the title of mom. Good bye, mother."
"No please wait. I can explain!" I spin on my heels and point a menacing finger at her. She freezes a few feet away from me with her arms in a surrender position.
"Let's just take a moment to see what this looks like from my point of view shall we?" I say with a fake smile. Eva, if I can even call her that, stands still and shuffles her feet nervously. Vicky sits awkwardly at the table with her mouth open.
"You claim that you couldn't handle your own children, so you put them up for adoption. Then within a couple years of you giving up your children you get married again. And guess what? He had a child."
"No, honey, I wasn't a single mom anymore and with his help I could take care of all of my children. I didn't think you would both be gone by the time I came back for you. But I did go back to get you guys and I'm so sorry you weren't there when I went. I did some digging around and found you first. I was at the doctor's office your adoptive dad's specifically. He was just smiling and so happy that I had to ask why he was so perky. I mean it was raining and a Monday and 8 in the morning. No one else was happy, but he was. He told me he just adopted a beautiful daughter. I already knew it was going to be you, but I asked anyway just to hear him confirm it. He said Marley and I found you." She smiles while I feel like I'm going to throw up.
"You and Vicky didn't go to the same elementary school. But when you both went to the same high school I made her befriend you so I could see what you've grown up to be like. You are everything I would ever want you to be."
"You can't expect me to believe that. That is honestly such bullshit. You are no mother to me. And using Vicky to get to me? Wow turns out you didn't learn how to be a good mother the first time. I am going to make it very clear I don't want anything to do with you."
"No Marley please you're all I have left," she cries.
"Go find Eliza," I hiss done with this conversation.
"Marley I can't you don't understand." She grabs my hand while I march to the door.
"And why not?" I ask bored.
"You don't know?" she asks shocked.
"Know what?"
"You were both adopted within the same year. You went with the Harris'. Eliza was less fortunate. A small family adopted her. When I found out that you were both adopted and went to find you both I did find you. I went to the family's house and rang the doorbell. A tall man in a white stained muscle tee and his wife who had her hair in a bun answered the door. The lady hid Eliza from view, but she did manage to pop her head out. She was covered in bruises. They abused her. When I demanded they give my daughter back and they weren't fit to be parents. They just laughed and slammed my face in the door. No matter how hard I tried to get her back, I couldn't. They were her legal guardians. Even though I couldn't adopt her, I could still visit once in a while. Up until she was 10 I would see her before they cut off our connection. She introduced me to her friends who weren't real. I think she made them up to beat how lonely she was and how terrible her life is."
"That's so sad. Poor Eliza," I whisper. I can't believe what a terrible thing has happened to her.
"It gets worse. One year her parent's went missing along with her." My hand covers my mouth in horror.
"That means-"
"Eliza adoptive family and Eliza are missing," she finishes for me.
