Chapter 11~ Breakout
Why the hell am I here?
More importantly why am I here and Vicky isn't?
These are the questions that I've asked myself repeatedly after only 5 minutes of being in detention.
I've sent her multiple texts asking if she was coming and multiple texts back of her assuring me she was going to show up. So where is she?
Detention is being held in the same room my first period math class, so it wasn't hard to find. As soon as I arrived Ms. Sculley popped her head in to make sure I actually came. No words were exchanged and she left again. The teacher on duty-Mr. Fritz- is snoring loudly behind his desk with his legs propped up against the whiteboard. He looked comfortable, but no one else was. This was torture. Our phones are hidden deep within our bags, out of view, because we aren't allowed to use them. We have to "think about what we've done". So, no electronics. No books. No talking. Just sitting here in silence and being bored for the next hour until we can go home. This is one hour of my life that I am never getting back.
The detention room consists of me and one other guy I recognize but can't name. I've seen him around the halls loitering and glaring at me as I pass him. He's thin, but not scrawny, and tall. He had a small thin line of stubble above his top lip which will turn into a mustache if he doesn't shave soon. You could easily identify him by his outfit of a dark hoodie and dark wash jeans which is what he wears everyday. The majority of his hair was hidden behind his hood and what you could see peaking out from under his good extended down to his chin and is swished over his eye. He was sketchy and his aura basically screamed I will murder you if you look at me funny, so I only take small glances at him when he isn't looking and know I won't get caught. My eyes were focused on the clock. I was literally counting down the minutes until I could leave. Only 54 minutes to go.
I turn my head to the side and look out the window beside me. I jump out of my seat and let out a startled cry when I see Vicky's face right in front of mine through the glass. She taps the window pane lightly and points upwards. She wants me to open the window.
Usually people break out of detention. Not into it.
I turn my eyes back to Mr. Fritz who has his back to us. His eyes are closed shut and he won't be waking up anytime soon. I open the window and expect Vicky to sneak in because she's late but she doesn't.
"Where have you been? You said you were coming. What the hell are you doing?" I question quietly as soon as the window is open. She remains outside.
"I am here and technically I did come just not the way you were expecting," she replies in a duh voice.
"You're supposed to be in here. Not out there," I say pointing out the obvious.I motion to the classroom with my hand.
"Yeah I know. But I thought it would be easier to bust one person out instead of both of us trying to get out."
"Wait what? Do you know how much trouble we'll get into? It's bad enough I have a detention. Now you want me to ditch it?" The goody two shoes side of me kicked in and took manual override of my body.
"I'm your friend. Why would I get you in trouble? All I'm doing is to get us out of here so we can have fun."
I shoot her a look that shows my disapproval. The last time she had an idea that would be fun I ended up having my heart broken. It wasn't her fault, but it was partially her idea to go to the party.
"Hey Tony," she calls to the guy in the back of the room. Why does she know his name? He brushes a piece of hair from his eye. He grunts a huh.
"Can you keep a look out? I'm stealing away Ms. Goody over here for a while. It can be like our little secret. Text me when he starts to move around," she orders him. He grunts again and pulls out something from his bag that appears to be his phone and slouches further down his chair.
"Well are you coming?"
"Yeah yeah," I grumble. I stumble out of the window and land not so gracefully on my feet. We're standing in the middle of a garden that contains mostly bright and colorful flowers surrounded by some low shrubs. A few feet in front of us is an empty parking lot except for one car which is mine. I smack my arms against my thighs.
"Now what?"
"Now we drive," she says while marching to my car not bothering to wait for me.
"What?" I ask incredulously. I jog to catch up to her. "We are not leaving school property. It's bad enough I'm even out here. Now you want to scamper off? We are staying right here on school property. Nu-uh. I don't think so."
Here we are now at a Starbucks drinking coffee.
I don't understand how she got me to come here, but I did. She told me to live a little and I just went with it. We've been sitting here and drinking Pumpkin Spice Lattes for the past 5 minutes. The warm drink burns my mouth a little, but it tastes like heaven.
"You never told me the story about how you ended up getting a detention," I remind her while gently tapping the side of my cup.
"Oh yeah. Well that's a funny story. Well it starts with me and a guy," she says. She blushes a deep red. She brushes her hair off her shoulders and onto her back so she can look at me clearly.
"Aw. Does Vicky have a little crush?" I speak as if I'm talking to a child. I lean across the table to pinch her cheeks, but she slaps my hands away.
"Hell no. It's not a crush. It's just I like this guy more than I've liked other guys in my past."
"Are your feet wet? Because you're in de Nile. The blush tells me you're lying."
She shoots me an annoyed look. "Do you want to hear the story or not?" She huffs. I raise my hands in defeat.
I scoot my chair in closer and prop my head on my hands. She fidgets with the hem of her coat under the table. With a deep breath she begins.
"I was busy at lunch which is why I couldn't help you with the whole drama confrontation thing. I was with Toby-"
"You were with Toby?" I screech. She nods. I stare at her with my mouth open wide.
"I met him at the party," she explains. My mouth forms an 'o' when I put it together and figure out that's who she was sitting on. Guess they had to finish up what they started on Friday when I interrupted.
"Anyways, I was with him all lunch period and the bell rang. We lost track of time. I was freaking out. I've had 3 detentions this month for being late to class and the last thing I needed was another one. So much for that. I was running across the halls and I accidentally bumped into Mr. Winchester and knocked him down. He started yelling at me for running down the halls. He started threatening to bring in my mom for my reckless behavior. Blah blah blah. I got up and started running again because his voice started to sound more like a trumpet and I didn't have time for a lecture. Then another teacher caught me and I said 'f*ck my life' aloud. Those exact words. She heard me and then one thing lead to another and I got myself another detention. I was supposed to be in detention, but I didn't show. I guess it wasn't really a long story."
The only thing that is going through my mind is her and Toby. To be honest, he kinda freaked me out, but if he made her happy then I'm happy.
"Soooo did you and Toby have fun all lunch"? I wiggle my eyebrows suggestively. She groans and smacks my arm.
"We were just studying. That's it I swear."
I snort. "I don't believe you. But okay." She opens her mouth to reply but her phone cuts her off. She reads it and stands up abruptly.
"We have to go. Now," she says while rushing to the exit. I follow her. I deposit my cup in the trash can.
"Toby texted me to tell me that Mr. Fritz was woken up by a phone call. He knows we're not there. Mr. Fritz is searching the school as we speak. While they're gone we can sneak in and make up an excuse for our disappearance. Let's go!"
We hop in my car and I slam on the gas. We make it to school in record time. We rush out of the car in a frenzy to the window we came out of only to find it closed. I peak inside and all the lights are off and the room is still empty. I tug many times upwards trying to open the window, but it's locked from the inside. I groan in frustration. Vicky grabs my arm and drags me to a side entrance.
"Come on this way. This mission just got a little more impossible."
We swing open the side door and enter the hallway. The classroom door comes into view. Like the window it's locked. I slump my back against the door and sit on the floor. I feel Vicky sit beside me with her body pressed against mine. She rests her head against my shoulder.
"We are in so much trouble. First we get detention. Then we ditch detention. Your dad is going to flip out."
"It's fine," I reply.
The echo of footsteps sounds throughout the hallway. Both of our heads whip to face the direction they came from and we see Mr. Fritz stomping down the hall with Toby trudging along behind him. The old teacher raises a finger and points it accusingly at us. We both stand up to face his wrath.
"Where have you two been? I wake up to find a classroom which is meant to have 3 students only have 1. I wouldn't expect this behavior from you Ms. Harris," he says the last part in a disapproving tone.
"Maybe if you'd done your job of supervising properly instead of napping we wouldn't have had the chance to leave and be in this mess in the first place." The harsh words exit my mouth before I have the chance to stop them. They just flow out of my mouth effortlessly. Everyone stops to look at me wide eyed. Even Toby's eyes are staring at me amazed behind his hair. I just back talked a teacher. My hand slaps over my mouth. Mr. Fritz straightens his back.
"You have a point. I will excuse it this time seeing as you've returned. But if it happens again there will be a punishment," he warns. I can't believe that worked. He pulls out a key from within his pocket and open the door. He sticks out an arm and let's us go inside before him.
"Sorry, sir. I had to use the restroom before I came and Marley came to find me to get us both out of trouble. It won't happen again," Vicky lies.
Vicky goes in first followed by me and soon after Toby. Mr. Fritz flicks the light switch on.
I take my seat by the window with Vicky beside me. My phone buzzes violently in my pocket. An unknown number is displayed on my screen. The message reads:
Almost got caught that time. I like to keep you on your toes. I have a surprise for you. Go to this address tomorrow. Seems father dearest has a little secret that could ruin you both.
316 Main Street at 5:30pm.
I can instantly identify the address as my dads work office. What could they have against my dad? What's he hiding?
I send a reply to the number asking who this is. I get no text back with an explanation. I slam my phone down harshly on the desk. Part of me is curious as to what she has against my family the other part is terrified. It's best not to get on her bad side. There's only one way to find out what this secret is and that's to go to this address tomorrow.
