Chapter 5 (Clark): To the Proving Grounds

Velicity got us to school at 8:29 exactly. She dropped us off in the line for the kindergarten class.

I hated her way of traveling, it was too fast. One second we are in the kitchen putting away the dishes, then I heard her laugh and boom we are at school.

"Why do you want to go to school so bad? I thought the kids bullied you," Elizabeth said.

She didn't like the idea of school as much as I did. She could never sit in one place for too long. Mom said it was Atom's fault. I hated him even more for that.

"School is awesome! The bullies were the only problem, but now that I have powers they can't make fun of me anymore!" I shouted with a raised fist.

Elizabeth looked like she had forgotten how to smile.

Her lips were rolled over themselves and she said, "We are abominations. They'll always find a way to remind us that we are different."

Abominations.

I'd heard the word so many times to describe Elizabeth and me that it was a second name to us. I liked the new nickname people had made up, The Wolf Pups. It had a better ring to it and it didn't make me feel sad about existing. For the first time in my life I was proud to be me.

"It's different now. We have something that the other kids don't."

"And what is that?" she asked with one eyebrow raised.

"We are Archers. And that means we aren't Atoms," I smiled.

The other kids began to show up and stood on the colored line for their grade. Kindergarten was a white line, first grade was a yellow, second was green, third was blue, fourth was red and fifth was black.

Elizabeth and I stood in the very front of the kindergarten class and I could hear the kids behind us whispering.

"That's Clark! The wimp decided to stop hiding in his house," one of them hissed.

"And look, his sister is even uglier than him. Her hair looks like someone dumped kool aid on her," a girl laughed.

I tried to hold back my anger. I tightened my fists as tight as I could and didn't stop until it felt like nothing.

Elizabeth pressed her hand on my back and whispered, "Clark, control yourself. What's wrong with you?"

"Can't you hear them?" I whispered back.

"I can't hear anything when everyone is talking this loud! Now turn off the anger before you make them hate us more!" she said with a look that made me feel like I was insane.

She was right. Every line had been filled with kids who were all talking to each other.

How could I hear them? I thought to myself.

A hard breeze had made hearing even harder and that made me think I imagined the whole thing.

I looked down at my sleeve and saw that my arm had turned into air. It was hard to control the elemental clones when I was together. I had to manage five minds all at once. The power liked to sneak out when I was scared or angry. The clones were like guardians; they would do everything in my power to keep me out of harm's way and sometimes that meant blowing up the house.

"Attention!" an administrator yelled and the chatter died in the wind.

Boots clicked together and arms were thrusted backwards as everyone outside of the kindergarten class snapped to attention. A slim woman wearing a black tank top, long army green pants and extremely short brown hair walked onto the stage.

"Who's that?" Elizabeth asked quietly.

"She's the Captain . She's the one who trains us to run a thousand miles without breaking a sweat, to lift a thousand pounds with the tips of our fingers, and how to win every battle."

"So she's a gym teacher for superheroes?" she laughed a little too hard.

"Ah, I see the Wolf Pups have decided to join us," the Captain said as her unimpressed eyes bounced from me to Elizabeth.

Everyone looked at us, curious to who she was glaring at.

"Yes ma'am. We are here to learn," I answered, frozen and unable to move.

The Captain nodded with a blank face.

"Interrupt my announcements again and you'll learn to regret it," she warned.

"Today is a big day soldiers. We..."

"Or what?" Elizabeth taunted.

I tried to turn around and cover her mouth, but the Captain was already next to us. Elizabeth was mad, I could hear it in her voice. It was the same sharp tone she always used right before a shadow would come to life.

"You really want to test me? Huh, girl? You think you're brave for acting out? You think that because your dad is the Shadow Wolf that you get a free pass? Well guess what? That's ten miles around the track for you."

"No," Elizabeth said without any fear in her voice.

The Captain's face had turned red with anger. She reached for my sisters hair, attempting to drag Elizabeth to the track if she had too. Unexpectedly, my hand flew up and caught her wrist before she could grasp at fading smoke. The crowd of students let out a big gasp as the Captain's anger released itself.

"I am your commander and you will obey me," she wailed and freed herself from my grasp.

Elizabeth had teleported onto the stage when the Captain tried to grab her.

"You don't scare me. I've seen a monster, I was captured by a monster, and I lived with a monster. You are a flightless bird compared to what I've been through and what Clark has been through."

The Captain leaped five feet in the air and onto the high stage and tried to snag Elizabeth again, but my sister was already a master at shadow stepping. A puff of black smoke sat on the stage as she teleported next to me.

"No one is my master! And I'll die before anyone tries to control me again!" Elizabeth shouted at the top of her lungs.

Tears began to run down her cheeks and her anger only grew. The crowd was silent. The Captain seemed to cool down after Elizabeth's speech. The other kids looked at us with wide eyes and crouched lower than our heads.

"Forget the ten miles. You seem to think you have enough power to take me on, so why don't you both take a turn in the proving grounds?" the Captain questioned.

Elizabeth's green eyes didn't break contact with the Captain. I could feel the earth below us start to shake. Pebbles large and small began to float all around us.

"This enough proof for you?" she sneered.

Some of the first graders began to cry and the Captain traded in her redness for a pale shade of green.

"You should never threaten an Archer..." Elizabeth muttered, falling flat on her face, unconscious.

"Elizabeth!" I yelled.

I was feeling weak and sleepy.

I fell to my knees, barely able to stay awake. I saw a pair of white heels and a blue ripped up dress walking up to me.

A beautiful woman with long silver hair, who was a little older than Scarlett, stood over us.

"Hush, child. Stop fighting the urge and sleep. Everything is going to be okay. Mother is here to help," she smiled as my vision turned into darkness.
