Chapter Eight - Two Sides Of The Same Coin

As night fell, the Condor landed in a uninhabited Terra. As they rested, Piper lay in her bed wide awake. As she waited for everyone to sleep, she got up and began her plan to confront the Shadow Hound. Meanwhile, Johntyr was wide awake as he tried to think of a plan to escape to continue his hunt for Baron Gratham. Suddenly, Piper walked into his cell with rage in her eyes.

Piper: The Shadow Hound.....

Johntyr: Isn't it a little late for an interrogation?

Piper then pulls out one of his blaster pistols and puts in on the table as she sits down. Johntyr shows no emotion on his face as he puts together what's going on.

Johntyr: Heh. It was only a matter of time I suppose.

Piper: You murdered my family! Shot them down in cold blood! I want you to hear their names! Jon and Anyarah!

Johntyr looked at Piper dead in the eyes as she grabbed the pistol and aimed it at his head.

Johntyr: What happened that day was a mistake. It was only your old man that was supposed to die that day.

Piper: Why?! What did my father do to deserve this fate?!

Johntyr: After Ace betrayed the Storm Hawks, the Sky Council got antsy. So they decided to send a someone to spy on them....your old man. For a while, he gathered information on them until he got found out. He escaped before Anarchis could get her hands on him.

Piper: How do you know all this?

Johntyr: I did my homework. Anarchis hired me to track him down and kill him. It did just that. But when I did, I made a rookie mistake and he found out. Your old man and I threw some punches until he was able to move to another room. Without thinking, I just shot through the walls to make sure that he didn't get away. But.....

Piper felt rage consume her. Hearing him say what he's saying made her even more angry. Her grip on the pistol tightened as tears fell down her face.

Piper: My parents were good people and you slaughtered them! Why?! Just for blood money?!

Johntyr: It was just a job. Nothing personal. I'm a Bounty Hunter. When I get hired for a job, I complete it. But I don't gun down women and kids. What happened to your mom was a mistake.

Johntyr kept his eyes on Piper as she kept her aim on the pistol. At this point, the seasoned Bounty Hunter sighed.

Johntyr: You want to kill me, don't you?

Piper said nothing as she kept her finger on the trigger. Johntyr could see the rage and resentment in her eyes.

Johntyr: Men of my profession don't live long lives. Those that do have luck on their side. I've killed all my life. I've killed for survival. I've killed for glory. I've killed for coin. I knew it was a matter of time until my luck ran out.

Johntyr looked at Piper with no fear in his eyes. Though he had his share of regrets.

Johntyr: I'm no angel. I've killed so many men that I probably filled a dozen graveyards. Do I have my regrets? I've got a few.

Piper: Why are you telling me this?

Johntyr: I don't quite know myself. Right now, I'm just an old man preparing for the end. I knew from the moment I took on this life that it was gonna end like this one way or another. Tell me, you ever killed a man?

Piper was taken aback by this question. She thought about all her battles and adventures with the Storm Hawks.

Piper: No.

Johntyr: It's a hell of a thing killing a man. You take away all he's got, and all he's ever gonna have. You never forget your first.

Piper: Aren't you afraid?

Johntyr: Not really. I've been in some serious firefights in my life. There were times where I thought I was a dead man. Go easy on that pistol. It's....it's got a hell of a kick to it.

Piper was conflicted by this. Johntyr was calm about his apparent fate and had expressed regrets. She took a deep breath and aimed her pistol at the unarmed and unarmored Shadow Hound. Her hands began shaking as she tried to steady her aim. She began hyperventilating as she found herself unable to pull the trigger. Eventually, she dropped the pistol and collapsed on her knees and began crying.

Piper: I.....I can't....I....I thought I could go through with it....

Johntyr: If it makes you feel any better, I'm sorry.

Piper looked up to Johntyr and didn't see the heartless monster she saw him as. What she saw was a man with his share of regrets. Piper left the room with the pistol and returned it to the armory. She then returned to her room and began crying to a pillow as to not wake the others up. Johntyr took a moment to reflect on his life. While he had his regrets, he knew no life other than the life of a killer. To Johntyr, the Shadow Hound was as much of an extension of himself as it was a simple persona. Despite this, Johntyr was not without his regrets. His life was a coin to him. On one end, he was a flawed man with regrets. On the other end, he was the ruthless Bounty Hunter. To him, Johntyr and the Shadow Hound were two sides of the same coin.
