CHAPTER 16: THOSE WHICH HIDE IN THE DARK

We've been walking for quite a long time now.

I continuously have been throwing glances to our backs, feeling uneasy.

I accidentally took more steps than intended, and stepped on the back of Satan's shoes, making him trip and throw an annoyed look back.

Instead of me, Satan glared at the one laughing behind me.

Satan gritted his teeth and looked down at me.

"Pamy... That's the fourth time you'd step on my shoes... Didn't I instruct you to remain in the middle of our line? Have you been paying attention to where you've been walking?"

I looked down and back up at Satan. He was right though; I haven't been paying attention to my front ever since I got those goosebumps.

I threw a small smile and answered,

"I... I'm really sorry... My bad... I just feel a little bit... worried..."

Solomon came up to us.

"Worried about not going back? Or, perhaps..."

I quickly cleared up their doubts and worries.

"I just noticed... That the fires in the part we've left behind from the hall, have been blown out..."

Solomon tilted his head and looked back.

"Now that you mention it, it's been getting darker as the time we've been walking passes... I've also been having a weird feeling of being watched..."

Satan added,

"That's what I've been feeling ever since we've arrived here as well... We better look for a way out of here as soon as possible, after we get the information we need of course."

I commented,

"And what if danger comes to us before we even get the chance to retrieve whatever we are here for?"

Satan rolled his eyes and chuckled.

"Would it kill you to be more positive?"

I laughed as well.

"I hope it doesn't."

Our laughter died out as soon as the fire next to us and the ones up front blew out.

Satan's glowing eyes next to me took away all my worries, but still I reached out to the darkness next to my other side, trying to grab unto Solomon.

A sudden grab unto my open hand and the intertwining of fingers with mine, followed by the whisper of the one I had been searching earnestly calmed my senses.

Solomon,

"I'm here as well... No need to feel agitated..."

Satan commented,

"It is me who is getting agitated."

Satan could see the questioning look on my face but decided to ignore it.

Satan was about to speak again but from my pocket, the shining blue, magical stone that I've been carrying ever since we've been transported, came floating out and hovered in front of my face before taking its leave.

Something came up with my body and moving on its own, went running after it.

Satan and Solomon, both screamed out for me while I tried with no success to either slow down or come to a stop. It was as if the stone was pulling me with it.

I turned left and right, went up, apparently some stairs and resumed the race in the dark maze.

After one last turn, a door was closed and both the stone and me came to an abrupt stop.

A strange voice came from it.

"What are you doing here?"

I asked myself if I was being played with the question.

"What do you mean, why am I here? Me and my friends are here to retrieve some information that would help us defeat someone evil."

The voice,

"It has been long since someone came down here for the means to destroy another..."

I quickly interjected,

"Oh! No, what I meant this is not for selfish reasons. This person... This person threatens humanity and all the existing Worlds. If he is not stopped, we fear all will be at its end... So, please... If you can... help us..."

The stone's brightness became stronger, then slowly dimmed again.

"No need to convince me... I can sense from your soul, that you are telling the truth."

I fidgeted with my hands as I waited for it to agree to my inquiry.

The voice,

"Fine. I will help you get the book that holds what you need to know most."

I sighed in relief, just to be startled and attentive to what the voice from the stone said next.

"We first need to help your friends. I believe we left them far behind and if they haven't been taken already, we must retrieve them as soon as possible."

I had to blink more than twice to the stone's statement.

I said hesitantly,

"What do you mean with, been 'taken already'?"

The stone came nearer. I could feel coldness crawling my back; the pressure of something grabbing at my clothe and twisting itself on my limbs.

I could not move.

Incomprehensible voices ushered in my ears.

The stone, now in front of my face, commanded,

"Close your eyes..."

Just as I shot them closed, some of the intense light found its way through my eyelashes and loud screeches could be heard moving further away from where I was standing.

Then, all went dark as the stone placed itself in my open hands.

It uttered one last word,

"Run..."

It was the tenth time Solomon hit his face with a wall.

He cursed.

"Dammit... I need to get somewhere with some light or else I won't be able to make a light of my own in this darkness..."

He tapped with his foot and palms the surfaces, making sure to take it easier and not anxiously start walking fast.

He would tell himself that, despite hearing whispers and white noises in the background.

He would close his eyes and resume opening to continue his walk.

He didn't need to be afraid. He was a powerful sorcerer. The fact he couldn't perform any spell in the dark was another thing, but he was indeed, a powerful being as well. He was a brave man, not a child which outmost terror are the monsters that lurk in the dark.

He murmured to himself,

"Come on Solomon... Be brave you damned fool!"

Out of nowhere a wicked laugh startled him, sending chills from his toes up to the back of his neck.

Solomon laid there petrified as the whispers around him became louder.

Another laugh,

"Coward!"

Then another,

"You are no man..."

Another,

"RAT!"

No matter how hard he tried to cover his ears, the voices still found their way into his ears, making his head spin.

He screamed,

"SHUT... SHUT UP!"

Tapping sounds were heard and with less than a second to pass, a pair of hands pulled him unto a corner, and followed to cover his mouth.

A blue light seemed to be illuminating the stranger's silluete.

Solomon exclaimed,

"Pamy?! Where were you?! I have been looking for you!"

Pamy tried to silence Solomon's ecstatic voice.

She whispered,

"Shhh! Quiet! We need to remain quiet, or else they'll find us..."

Solomon sneaked a hand over Pamy's lower back, as he watched her alert yet beautiful eyes glimmer with blue shimmer.

Solomon whispered back,

"Wha... What will?"

Pamy finally turned her face, revealing those eyes which he missed so much in the little time he was blinded by the dark. Something he had tried to surpress for so long started to tug at his heart.

Pamy breathed out,

"The Shadows... The Darkness hidden in these walls..."

She then loosened her hands and she tugged at Solomon's free hand, while his other moved away from where it previously rested.

She continued as she moved away from where they were standing.

"We need to get Satan. It's not safe here... This place... We...?!"

She was surprised at the sudden pull to her arm and the tight embrace that followed.

She tried to speak Solomon out of whatever he was going through but she soon gave up, as she heard the words uttered by him.

"Just a little... A little bit more..."

Solomon could feel arms wrap around him and couldn't help to smile.

He knew, that while he had her close to him, those voices which hunt him, will slowly become silent.
