How Far You've Come
Ares stood up, looking down at the people he'd last seen as kids.
"Fine. All of you, outside. It's time to see how far you've come." He gestured. The 3 looked at one another, before hesitantly standing. Torrents face twisted into a concerned face.
"You're not going to spar our children.. right?" Torrent tilted his head slightly.
"No, of course not.." Ares crossed his arms, and shook his head. Torrent let out a sigh of relief "Iba is." He continued, and walked out into the backyard, followed shortly by the four youngens. Ares snapped his fingers, a dome of purple energy forming around the backyard.
"Your attacks will not penetrate this dome, and it keeps weather conditions changes neutral for everyone, to allow for a fair fight.. I need to see how strong each of you are." Ares explained, standing by the door and leaning on the wall. Ina walked out into the centre of the backyard, and stretched a bit. He was still rather short, and not very intimidating. He kept his cloak on, and turned to face them all.
"Who first, father." Iba asked, cracking his knuckles. He was extremely strong, if his build didn't suggest it. Raised as an only child of a vengeance filled Ares, he had definitely had his training. The other parents worried slightly.
"Hrmn.. Nanka. You first." Ares gestured. Abenanka laughed.
"Iba is so small.." he mumbled chuckling to himself "I'll show you what my dad taught me!" He grinned, flames bursting on his hands, and vines raising around him somewhat. Iba remained motionless for a few moments.
"Flames.. vines.. heartbeat at a regular pace.. 5 meters ahead.. underestimating his opponent.." Iba mumbled incoherently to all but himself, before bursting into action.
Abenanka kept a close eye on Iba, expecting him to fight like Ares. Over the years, Nanka had seen Ares fight a few times, and using this knowledge he thought he was being smart. However, Iba dipped down and dashed to the side, zipping behind him and jumping up, kicking him in the back of the head. Abenanka wasn't expecting it at all, and fell forwards slightly, spinning around and swiping a flamed hand toward where he saw the blur go. Doremi and Benjamin were both also surprised. Abenanka regained his footing and looked around - not seeing him. Iba dashed down and shoulder barged Abenankas legs, knocking him to the floor. Nanka grunted, and leapt up, getting some distance between him and the blind devil. Iba stood up a bit, widening his stance.
"Got ya-" Abenanka grinned slightly, and vines shot up from the ground around Iba, and grabbed at him. As soon as they burst from the floor, Iba dipped down; rolling past them. A vine got a hold of his ankle and tossed him to the side. Abenanka laughed a bit, watching Iba fly into the edge of the dome. Without pausing, he placed a foot on the dome, and kicked off, landing on the ground and sprinting toward Abenanka zig-zags and dashes. Abenanka was surprised, more vines growing swiftly and attempting to grab at the boy. He lifted his hands, bursting flames at Iba, a large explosion of inferno leaving Nanka's palms. Iba felt the heat increase on Abenankas hands in the air, and decided to use a power - holding a hand out toward Abenanka, and grunting softly. A purple coloured pulse ripped the air, and threw Abenanka backwards, slamming into the dome. Nanka groaned, wings spreading out from his back and sending him blasting toward Iba, flames covering his hands. Iba heard the wings in the air, focusing hard on his surroundings. As Nanka reached him, he jumped hard, jumping into the air, placing his foot on Abenankas shoulder and propelling further up from it. Nanka immediately grabbed Iba, and threw him hard into the floor, kicking him in the stomach, and forming a large fireball in his hand. The others watched in shock, thinking Iba was going to get seriously hurt.
Iba slowly lifted himself up, on his hands and knees, he spat blood onto the ground.
"Hrmn." He grunted, before standing up swiftly, during this motion he swung and hit Nanka in the side, and then uppercut his jaw as he stood, front kicking the boy immediately after. Nanka was winded, stumbling backwards, and dropping the fireball. It exploded as it hit the floor. Nanka groaned a bit and opened his mouth, smoke beginning to emit from it. Iba obviously couldn't see this, stepping back into a stance and forming a ball of void fire in his hand. Nanka yelled somewhat, and an inferno of fire burst from his mouth, with vines bursting from the ground, wrapping around Iba, and pinning him in place. Iba tried to dodge the vines - incapable due to the inferno of fire that distracted him. Before the others knew it, he was engulfed in the flames.
"Oh my- Iba!" Doremi shouted in half-horror. Ares placed his hand on her shoulder, watching the fight. Nanka kept the fire going, slowly running out of breath. From within the orange glow, a purple hue began to form. With a rumble, and a loud explosion, purple and black flames burst from within Nankas breath. His vines were singed, and Iba flew toward Nanka, punching him in the jaw, and kicking him in the stomach in the opposing direction. Nanka dropped down; met with a swift kick from Iba. Nanka hit the floor hard, spitting blood from his mouth, and sitting up. Iba stood over him; ready to continue.
"I've seen enough." Ares commanded. Iba stepped back somewhat; bowing his head. Nanka stood up.
"Wha-?? I was just getting started!" Nanka pouted. Iba's clothes were somewhat singed, and ash covered him. Iba took a breath, and his clothes began to return to normal, his wounds healing.
"You're strong, Nanka. We can all see that. You're careless and cocky, though. You go in for the kill immediately, instead of playing the long game. Sometimes it's worth being patient." Ares explained, pushing his hair back. Nanka remained silent.
"..who's next.." Iba huffed, and stood up straight, looking toward the group. Benjamin stepped forwards.
"Me." He volunteered. Ares nodded, returning to the wall; while Benjamin and Nanka swapped positions.
Benjamin cracked his knuckles somewhat, and stretched. Iba gave him time, assessing him from his senses.
"Large build, like his father.. electric powers if memory serves.. quite muscular.. hard hitting.. Hrmn.." Iba rubbed his chin, before taking a few steps back and assuming a defensive stance. Benjamin sighed.
"Right.. let's get this show on the road." Benjamin looked at his opponent, not wanting to hurt a friend, but he had to give it his all. Who wouldn't want to impress Ares?.. a few people, probably. Iba had a low stance, using his senses to get an image of the surroundings in his mind; and the position of Benjamin. Benjamin had a plan, electricity sparking from his body as he moved toward Iba. He knew Iba wasn't going to strike first, based on his stance. Benjamin took a swing as he approached, Iba slipping beneath it. Without a moment to spare, Benjamin threw multiple more swings and kicks, not giving Iba chance to counter. Iba continued to dodge them, until grabbing Benji's wrist, and propelling his shoulder into Benjamin. Iba was up against an absolute unit of a man, and while he staggered back, it gave Benjamin a chance to grab Iba, and begin to electrocute him, holding him in somewhat of a choke hold. Iba was now struggling for air, and his body convulsing with electricity. He separated his mind from the situation, not panicking. He couldn't let it be over this soon. Ares stepped forward somewhat; intrigued at both of them. He had trained Iba to not give up, never give up, and he knew Benjamin was just as stubborn in the right situation.
Iba twisted his body somewhat, and jumped from the ground, slipping from Benjamins grip, and freeing himself from the electricity, climbing onto Benjamins back, and punching him in the side of the head. Benjamin staggered to the side a bit, exploding electricity out from his back. Iba was knocked off, hitting the ground. Not wasting time, Benjamin moved toward Iba and stamped down where his head was. Iba dodged to the side, and rolled off jumping to his feet.
"You got big.." Iba commented. Speaking during battle was rare for him. Benjamin didn't respond. Instead, he moved toward him. Iba didn't give him a chance, taking the offensive he began to be the one throwing the punches, swinging for his head before going for an uppercut to the stomach. Benjamin moved backwards somewhat to dodge the head swing. He grabbed Ibas wrist when he tried to uppercut, pinning it to his own chest to keep Iba close. Iba grunted, and began to dodge the hits as best he can. Benjamin landed a good hit straight to the nose, knocking Ibas head back, and causing him to become disoriented. Iba had no more grip on his surroundings, and all focus was lost, ringing filling his ears. Now completely in the dark, he stumbled back, Benjamin releasing his hand and punching him in the jaw. Iba fell backwards, hitting the ground on his back. Benjamin stepped back a bit, wanting to give him a chance. Iba groaned, sitting up, expecting Ares to call it done - but he didn't. Iba took advantage, still in the dark of his surroundings, his eyes turned from a white hue to red, his hair getting darker, and his overall physique getting larger. This form of Iba was more of a match for Benjamin.
Void Iba jumped up, grunting. Benjamin was a little surprised that he went to this level, but raised his fists none the less. Ibas senses were returning to him, and he blinked closer toward Benjamin - disappearing from his original position and appearing closer - Iba swung for Benjamin. Startled, Benjamin tried to block the hit, Iba immediately headbutting Benjamin in the face. Benjamin was dazed, feeling a flurry of punches hitting all over his body.
"Urgh-" Benjamin coughed a bit, and grabbed onto Iba. Iba continued to pound hits into Benjamin. Benji fought through it, his arms and hands lighting up blindingly, surging thousands of volts through Ibas body. Iba began to smoke and steam, having so much electricity put through him wasn't healthy by any means. Benjamin was becoming bloodied in the face, and coughing up blood. However, it didn't take long before Iba's physique and appearance returned to normal. He dropped down, the electricity becoming too much for him. Benjamin stumbled back a bit, and fell down onto his ass. Both of them were out of breath and having to recooperate.
"Benjamin.. well done. You placed both offensively and defensively depending on the situation. You were smart with your attacks, and even in the face of new problems arisen by Iba, you still fought through. Sacrificing your own well being like that.. while foolish and naive, it secured victory. Noble, if it were in an actual fight to help your friends." Ares seemed impressed, in his words.. not so much his face. Benjamin smiled a bit, as Ibas wounds all healed, and his stamina returning to him. Benjamin stood up, looking at Iba.
"How.. has he healed so fast..?" Benjamin questioned.
"He spent a few years mastering his control over the void.. he can now use it to heal himself at extremely accelerated rates." Ares explained. Benjamin listened, stumbling back to the ground and sitting down to catch his breath. Iba climbed to his feet and wiped his face.
"So.. Doremi.." he stood up straight and took a breath. Doremi was still in awe from the display of power from everyone else so far.
Doremi walked out toward Iba slowly, taking a breath slowly and calming herself ready for battle. She wasn't here to impress ares, or Iba, or anyone. She was here to avenge Sirin. That's what she is going to do. She frowned somewhat, and she formed a shield of ice on her left arm; watching Iba closely. Iba felt the drop in temperatures, and began to analyse her.
"Panicky.. but not too panicked.. ice powers.. not much power there.. not outwardly.. is she holding back?" He mumbled incoherently. Iba was confused, feeling something hidden. He brushed it off, and decided to open up with an attack. He threw a ball of void fire at her, waiting to see how she dealt with it. Doremi immediately swung her shield at it, causing the ball to explode against her ice shield. The ice was mostly undamaged, as she immediately held a hand out toward Iba, shards of ice forming from the vapour in the air and shooting toward Iba. Iba sensed the objects flying at him, dodging all of them one by one, before Doremi threw a larger chunk of ice. Iba grunted, holding both hands out, black fire exploding from his palm, destroying the ice. Doremi took a breath and readied her shield once again. Iba dashed toward her, jumping up and lifting his leg, preparing to kick her. He twisted his body in the air and kicked toward her. Doremi lifted the shield and blocked his leg, spikes shooting from it. The spikes ripped through his clothes and cut him slightly. Iba dropped to his feet and his hands engulfed in flames, holding them out toward her. At point blank range, her eyes widened, and before anyone could say anything, she was fully encased in thick ice. The black fire exploded from Iba, engulfing Doremi in an inferno of darkness. The ice was slowly melting, Doremi using a large majority of her energy to replenish it all.
Doremi thought for a moment, before the ice at the back melted, leaving only the wall ahead of her. She placed a palm on it, a spike growing at speed out toward Iba. Immediately, Iba moved his hands, grabbing the end of the spike as it grew, and snapping it off into a shard. He moved to the side, Doremi melting the ice, and using the water, throwing it toward Iba to distract him. Iba was drenched, holding the shard of ice, he had hidden it from her. She formed the ice shield once more, and a few shards floated around her. Iba spun around to gain momentum, then throwing the ice shard at her at insane speeds. Doremi gasped slightly and lifted the shield. She opened her eyes again, to see the tip of the shard had penetrated the shield and stopped just before her face. She gulped a bit. Iba wasted no time, dashing the toward her, grabbing the edge of the shield and shoving it aside, immediately shoulder barging Doremi backwards, a light blue flame forming on his right hand.
There was a strong gust of wind, and both Iba and Doremi were confused. Ares had appeared between them, holding the wrist of Iba's right hand.
"The fight is over. You did well, Doremi, you just need more training. But don't worry.. that's what I aim to try and do. Your defence is good. Your offence needs work." He explained, letting go of Ibas wrist.
"Why did you end it so suddenly." Iba asked, rubbing his wrist.
"..." ares didn't respond, turning and walking back toward the house. The purple dome collapsed around the house, disappearing into nothing. Doremi looked at Iba confused, Iba returning the look.
"It's getting dark. You will all need rest." Ares entered the home. The suns were indeed setting, and Iba, Abenanka, Doremi and Benjamin all gathered outside of the home in the backyard, discussing how they did, trying to move on from how suddenly weird Ares was.
It was now officially dark. Ares stood outside of the home, staring into the darkness.
"It's best I let them sleep.. no need to worry them over it. It was probably my imagination.."
"You have been seeing things... but I don't think you gained colour-blindness." A voice spoke back, using the same mouth.
"He was never taught that technique.. how could—"
"Just get some sleep, Ares.. you need it. I'm sure you will find your answers.. you will have to speak to him eventually."
"Hrmn.. yeah." Ares looked back toward the house, and huffed, walking back toward the home, and inside.
