Chapter 4: The Theif

"I was not fraternizing with her," Kylo told his brother, now that they were alone.

"Yes you were," Hux said.

"Was not," Kylo replied. "I was just being nice."

Hux rolled his eyes. "Kylo you need to keep your eyes peeled for danger and she has been districting you this whole time."

"That's only because I don't trust her, she's not a dwarf after all," he answered.

Hux looked at him his face a mask of pure unbelief, "well in that case I'll take first watch," Hux said deciding to drop the subject.

Kylo nodded, glad that the conversation of their burglar had passed. "Wake me when it's my turn."

Hux nodded, he sat in the chair that lay dormant in the corner and pulled out his book and began to read, tuning his ear for the slightest change of sound so he could strike if needed. His dagger lay at his side for a quick defense.

Ben went over to one of the two twin sized beds and laid down. He closed his eyes thinking about what the next day might hold, but thoughts of the hobbit kept entering his mind. Finally, he fell asleep.

Hux looked up from his book at his brother, he smiled slightly. He knew he was being hard on him but he had to look out for him, even from the things he wanted. Those were the worst kind, they hid themselves from the seer to infect their mind and Hux wouldn't let that happen. He had to protect him even from their burglar.

A creaking noise pulled him from his thoughts he quietly crept to the door and pulled open the door. He looked out into the hallway, there appeared to be no one there but that fact only made him more cautious. He closed the door and sat back down. The rest of his shift he didn't hear anything else.

When his turn was over, he walked over to Kylo's bed and shook him gently.

Kylo opened his eyes and looked up at his brother groggily.

"It's your turn Kylo," he said softly.

Kylo nodded and stood up.

"And be careful I've heard some noises outside already," Hux said.

"What kind of noises?" Kylo whispered.

"Like someone was walking down the hall, but no one was there," Hux answered sitting on the edge of the bed.

"That's strange," Kylo replied. He was about to ask Hux if he should go check on Rey and make sure that she was alright, but he knew where that question would lead.

Hux looked up at him, "I guess you can go check on her but make it quick."

Kylo looked at him surprised that he knew what he was thinking. He nodded. "I'll be back in a jiffy."

Hux smirked to himself and nodded laying down in the bed, but not allowing himself to go to sleep.

Kylo crept over to door and eased it open quietly. He looked down the hallway, but he couldn't see anything.

He went over to the door to Rey's room next to his and his brother's. He tapped on it softly, but there was no reply.

"Rey?" he whispered, but again there was no reply.

He became concerned and opened the door slowly, then slipped inside, looking around cautiously. He could see Rey sleeping peacefully, but there didn't seem to be anyone else there and nothing seemed to be out of place.

Rey sat up and opened her eyes to look at him. "What is it?"

"Are you alright?" the concern was a little too obvious in his voice.

"I was perfectly fine until you woke me up," she answered annoyed.

"Hux heard strange footsteps but when he looked in the hall, he didn't see anyone. I just wanted to make sure someone didn't come in here."

"Well that's very considerate," she answered, not sounding very appreciative.

The sound of quiet footsteps came from the hall and Kylo put his finger to his lips to silence her.

The door began to open slowly and Kylo drew his sword, and moved to stand in the corner of the room just behind the door.

The door swung open and a dark hooded figure emerged. He approached Rey were she sat still shocked and confused. Before he could reach her, Kylo slammed the hilt of his sword into the back of the man's head.

The man fell forward, landing on the floor with a thud.

Rey looked at Kylo in surprise.

He knelt down and tied the unconscious man's hands behind his back, then he began to drag him out of her room.

"Kylo..." Rey said as he was about to leave.

He looked at her.

"Thank you."

He smiled at her. "Don't mention it, Mistress Rey."

Kylo drug the unconscious man out of her room and into the one he shared with his brother.

"I caught a rat," he said.

Hux sat up to looked at him. "I knew it."

"This thief was either trying to kidnap our burglar or rob us blind," Kylo said.

"I guess we'll just have to ask him when he wakes up," Hux suggested.

Kylo nodded. "Good idea."

Hux nodded, "tell me when he wakes up," Hux said laying down.

"I will," Kylo replied.

Several moments later, the thief came too.

"Hux, he's awake," Kylo told his brother.

Hux's eyes popped open and he walked over to Kylo and the clocked figure. "Alright, who are you and what do you want?" he asked.

"That's none of your business," the thief replied.

"You broke into our b...friend's room so it is our business," Hux snapped.

"It was dark, I thought that it was my room," the thief replied.

Kylo looked at him in disbelief.

Hux face turned sour. "You don't think we're that stupid do you?"

"Fine, I was paid to spy on you and the hobbit, I was supposed to search your rooms and see if I could find any clues of what your purpose is. Two dwarfs traveling with a hobbit isn't something you see often," the thief gave in.

"Who were you hired by?" Hux asked growing concern.

The man shrugged. "I don't know who paid me, a messenger gave me some gold and a message that I was to follow you and search your rooms, the message promised more gold for information."

"Well too bad you won't have the chance," Hux said pulling his dagger out of its sheath.

"Please don't kill me," the thief begged.

Hux looked down at the man. "Why?" he taunted.

The man had no reply.

"That's what I thought," Hux said, slicing off the man's four finger.

The man let out a cry of pain.

"That's what you deserve," Kylo said.

"You speak of this to no one and I'll let you keep the rest of them," Hux spat.

The thief nodded urgently. "I'll send a reply that you were nothing but humble merchants."

Hux smirked, "good." He nodded to Kylo letting him know he could let the man go.

Kylo untied the man and released him.

The man hurried out of the room as quickly as possible.

Hux looked to Kylo. "You did good," he said slightly messing up his hair.

Kylo smiled at him. "Thank you, brother."

Hux nodded, laying down he was now pretty tired and wanted to rest.

Kylo went to stand by the door, listening carefully for any sounds out in the hallway.
