97. Reckoning
To Taehyung, the whole experience was bizarre. His battle with King Michael passed like a blur and the prince could only assume that he had partly given himself to his gem. But alas, even with the combined efforts of himself, Jungkook and Shay— he was beaten.
Taehyung could still hear the shattering of glass next to his ears when King Michael grabbed him by the throat and scraped his body across the side of a building. And when the darkness gem bearer crashed to the ground, he had fully lost consciousness.
And it was strange because Taehyung wasn't blacked out. Instead, he was in some sort of limbo, a cross between being asleep and awake. He could still faintly see King Michael's figure choking him on the ground.
When Taehyung heard his own voice even though he wasn't speaking with his own will, he had an idea of what was happening. It was like watching a play, expect the prince could see what was happening in his head but had no control over his own movements.
"Make yourself comfortable, Crowned Prince," The gem whispered, the voice seemingly echoing across the empty dark plain. "I'll be taking over for now."
Taehyung scoffed and held his knees, grunting as he hopped to his feet. "You really think I'd just let you use my body?"
A loud drawn out sigh was released. Taehyung started to wonder why the darkness gem had a personality, almost as if he was conversing with another living being. It was strangely sentient compared to the other existing gems.
"You were unconscious," The gem spoke after grumbling complaints in short yet aggressive whispers. "Would you prefer I let King Michael beat you then?"
Taehyung didn't say anything. Instead, he glanced around the area. It was a bit terrifying to see nothing but pitch black all throughout the area, so much so that he couldn't even see his own feet if he looked down.
"You're looking the wrong way, bud."
Jaw clenched, Taehyung turned around. Suddenly, he could see another him sitting on a throne across him. He sat arrogantly, one leg crossed over the other and a hand curled for his cheek to rest on.
The throne of his own mind. Taehyung scoffed, thinking it was cheesy, yet he was staring at it. "For a gem that thrives on darkness, you have strange tastes."
"What?," The other Taehyung, the gem, chuckled. "Is this too flashy for you? Did you expect a literal burning hell?"
"You speak too much."
"And you speak too less," The other Taehyung leaned forward, a playful smirk slowly spreading across his face. "I have been watching you for some time, prince. A lot of your so called conflicts would have been resolved by simply conversing with your team— mostly with the guardian."
Not finding the words to say, Taehyung clicked his tongue instead. Silence passed as he watched the fight play out— everyone was teaming up against King Michael, a sight the prince honestly thought he'd never see.
"Your guardian is something else," The gem commented suddenly, that smug expression still present on his face. "A perfect balance of two powerful breeds. Cute, too."
Taehyung felt his eye twitch slightly. He had the strongest urge to pull off this other him and take control of himself again. Instead, the prince took a deep breath and regained his composure.
"Why are you so infuriated?," The other Taehyung cocked his head teasingly. "It's not like you two are a couple or anything, right?"
Taehyung opened his mouth to reply but was stopped when King Michael suddenly screamed and released a ripple of force that nearly knocked everyone off their feet.
Then King Michael started to scream about his destiny of ruling Vrede and destroying Earth, yada yada. Taehyung was honestly tired of hearing all that, especially since he'd say it over and over again during his training with Shay.
Taehyung's eyes widened when King Michael suddenly slashed his wrist and swiftly wrote letters in the air with his blood. "I recognize this spell."
"Hm?," The other Taehyung tilted his head slowly.
"He's making a deal with the anti-god, Sect," Taehyung paused and slowly read the ancient lettering King Michael spelled out. "Exchanging his soul—"
"For more power," The other Taehyung finished, that playful smirk still present on his face. "Of course he did. King Michael has always been so hungry for it."
Taehyung went silent and watched the events play out for a bit. A pillar of swirling purple mist rose around King Michael as he morphed drastically. The prince watched with a dry throat as the gem eyed him cautiously.
Soon, King Michael's figure was replaced by a gigantic winged monster. Taehyung stared at the creature's sickly purple skin, long claws and hooved feet. Somehow, the sight extracted a complicated mixture of emotions of the prince. His stomach turned queasy.
"Father has lost his mind," Taehyung whispered under his breath and shook his head.
"Truly a strange man," The other Taehyung nodded in agreement, curled hand now positioned below his chin. "He yearns for power yet ignored all my offers of assistance."
A bit stunned, Taehyung turned towards him with scrunched eyebrows. "Father ignored the gem..."
"Sealed me away too," The other Taehyung shrugged, irritation laced in his expression. "Never got to use me at my full potential, which is honestly pretty stupid. Is he not aware that I am one of the most powerful tools of magic to exist in the universe?"
A terrifying aura surrounded the gem suddenly, dark purple veins branching in the air. Taehyung stepped backwards out of instinct. Thankfully, it left as soon as it came. After taking a deep breath, the gem put on a big grin.
"No matter," The other Taehyung comfortably leaned on the throne's backrest. "He no longer bears me. Whatever he does is none of my concern."
Taehyung stared at the other him with squinted eyes and was slightly taken aback by how calm the gem's persona was. At the same time, the prince thought it strange to be staring at an exact replica of himself.
As the battle continued, Taehyung watched in silence. He was dancing across the air with his twin blades as he continuously wounded King Michael. The monster's blood was a dark tar shade of black.
"You are too reckless," Taehyung glared at the other him, flinching when a purple beam barely missed his head in the battle. "You will get us killed."
"You speak too venomously, prince," The other Taehyung cocked his head slightly, dark eyes glinting. "Are you not fond of me?"
Taehyung squinted his eyes. "Because of you, I nearly killed my friends."
"To be fair, the Jungkook thing was mostly Animo's fault," The other Taehyung drummed his fingers on the throne's arm and created an awkward rhythm. "Besides, I have no plans on harming any of them now— especially the guardian, she's a keeper. Hm, the things I want to do—"
The gem suddenly paused, his face contorting in pain. At the same moment, Taehyung felt a piercing pain in his side. He looked down and saw a large gash through his waist, the fresh blood dripping down to his thigh.
Taehyung then realized that this was a real injury, especially because the gem suffered the same across him. Despite the blood seeping through his fingers as he grabbed the wound, the gem merely laughed.
"On the benefit of hindsight," The other Taehyung chuckled deeply. "It is quite difficult to keep you company and battle against your father at the same time."
Taehyung's hand made a squish as he gripped his wound. "Then let me take over before we get any more injuries."
For the first time in a while, the gem actually went silent. Taehyung stared as the other him returned the piercing glare. Suddenly, he couldn't see what was happening to his body. Instead, all the prince saw was the gem's dark and dilated eyes.
"Alright," The gem cracked a grin. Taehyung released a breath he didn't know he was holding. "But just so you know..."
The gem slowly hopped to his feet and walked towards Taehyung with slow yet careful steps. Eyes squinted, the prince tensed as the other him approached calmly.
Once the gem was standing right across Taehyung, he tilted his head. "I like talking to you."
Taehyung gasped loudly. Suddenly, he was back in the battlefield. The prince took a few seconds for his mind to register what exactly what was happening. His body was free falling in air and spinning in circles.
A loud explosion from above fully snapped Taehyung back to reality. Glancing behind him, he saw a large cloud of flame spread across the air, along with Emily's tiny figure on one of the building's roofs.
Taehyung angled his feet and finally regained balance in the air. He gritted his teeth when he felt his side sting and spotted the very same wound, except with way more blood than he initially thought. In his hands, the twin swords were coated with black blood.
"Tae!," Jungkook swooped in, his white wings flapping powerfully behind him. "Are you okay?!"
Taehyung cracked a grin and shrugged, blood seeping through his fingers. "Do not worry, Kook. I am fine."
Jungkook stared at Taehyung for a few seconds of silence as his blue eyes slowly widened. Then a big bunny grin grew on the angel's face as he tackled the Helian prince in a hug.
"Thank Macht you're back, yeah?," Jungkook sobbed a bit, two of his wings wrapping around Taehyung whilst the others continued to keep him afloat. "I did not know how much longer I could take your gem's commentary."
"He is a talkative one," Taehyung chuckled to himself when he heard the gem groan in his head. "What happened while I was—"
Before Taehyung could finish his question, King Michael roared loudly. The prince turned around to see the monster swiping its claws at the two, movements slow due to how big it was.
The two princes simply flew in opposite directions and dodged the monster completely. Taehyung gritted his teeth, eyes glowing a powerful purple as his twin swords morphed back into a snakehead staff.
Taehyung strapped his staff behind his back and drew out sharp claws. In one swift movement, he slashed downwards in an cross shaped pattern and amputated the monster's hand.
King Michael screeched loudly. His scaly purple hand fell to the ground and deflated like a balloon. Dark blood dripped down the gaping wound of the monster's wrist.
For a moment, Taehyung actually felt cocky. He could hear the gem slur a Ha, too easy! in his head. The prince shook those thoughts away.
"Uh, Tae," Jungkook wore a crooked grin, which made Taehyung raise an eyebrow at him. "Your hands..."
Taehyung followed Jungkook's gaze. His eyes widened when he realized that the monster's blood was making his fingers sizzle. It was strange, especially because he didn't feel the burning pain until now.
Hissing through the pain, Taehyung glanced around. He saw Namjoon on the ground as he flung cars and chunks of concrete at King Michael. The items only crumpled when they collided with the monster's scaly figure.
"Everyone!," Taehyung's voice boomed across Seoul. His hands continued to smoke. "Do not let the blood touch you!"
"I think we already got that!," Hoseok snapped from high up, pillars of wind shooting out of his palms. His leg was smoking as well, part of his pants charred off.
"Brother?!"
Shay's came from far away and Taehyung could not see her no matter where he looked. Then a cloud of purple mist exploded next to the prince. It faded to reveal his wide-eyed sister.
"You are back?!," Shay lunged forward slightly, her dark hair disheveled. Scratches dotted her cheeks and face. "Has the gem finally released you from its prison?!"
Taehyung put on a smile. Long ago, he never would have thought that he'd see Shay look so concerned for him. "Do not worry, Shay. The gem and I have come to a mutual agreement."
Shay scrunched her eyebrows together in obvious confusion. "You speak as if the gem has a mind of its own."
Taehyung was about to ironically explain to Shay that she was right when a scream came from below. Jimin ran across the streets and left a charred trail behind.
"Joonie?!," Jimin screamed and raised a hand. A bolt of lightning struck King Michael's leg but it only charred slightly before healing. "Do we have a plan?!"
"I'm working on it!," Namjoon wheezed and tossed a manhole at King Michael. It only bounced off his foot.
"This thing won't stop regenerating!," Emily screamed from the roof. She continued to release arrows. "And the army won't stop attacking!"
Taehyung was confused at first then he looked up and realized what Emily meant. More Helian warships were still spawning from the portal above. Hover-bikes flew from them like a swarm of insects.
Before Taehyung could react, a flash of purple pierced through the air and one of the Helian warships exploded. You came into view with your black Seraphim wings, a giant glowing sword in your hands.
Your wings flapped as you hovered next to Taehyung, who just stared at you with a slightly dropped jaw. "Taehyung, are you back?"
Taehyung took a few seconds for his mind to register your words. He only snapped back to reality when Jungkook playfully nudged his side with his elbow.
"Yes," Taehyung cleared his throat. You glanced at him with an amused expression. "Do not worry."
You glanced at Taehyung with glowing purple eyes, tight smile meaningful. "Thank goodness."
Taehyung stared back and for a moment he got lost in the moment of you staring back at him. Just as you opened your mouth to speak, Namjoon released a loud scream.
"Guys!," Namjoon screeched loudly, his pointed teeth bared. "I have part of a plan!"
"Technically, that isn't a plan?!," Jin hissed and swiped his trident diagonally.
Water appeared and froze in the air, forming icicles before they shot towards the hover-bikes. Some of them pierced through the vehicles' engines, others stabbing straight into Helians' hearts and killing them instantly.
"It's better than nothing!," You replied loudly and slashed your sword. A glowing purple wave reflected from the blade and knocked back more hover-bikes.
"Spit it out, Namjoon!," Yoongi snapped as pillars of fire shot out of his palms. It barely scorched King Michael's skin.
"As everyone knows by now, this monster has powerful regenerating abilities!," Namjoon's deep voice boomed loudly as he pulled out a lamppost from the streets.
With a loud scream, Namjoon pushed the lamppost upwards like a spear. He managed to pierce through a hover-bike's engine. Taehyung watched as the Helian rider crashed to the ground. A small explosion lit up the road.
"Minor attacks won't work no matter how much we try!," Namjoon summoned a wall of rock before him. Bullets bounced off of it. "We need to hit it before it can regenerate!"
"Are you saying we need an ultimate attack?!," Hoseok questioned from the air, just behind King Michael's wings.
"Exactly!," Namjoon replied loudly. Then he looked up.
When everyone else followed Namjoon's gaze, Taehyung realized what he meant. You, Jungkook, Shay and himself were all hovered in a row.
Nobody said anything. Taehyung knew that were no words needed to understand what Namjoon was trying to say. He glanced at Shay, who gave him a firm nod.
"We must attack altogether," Shay's Vredeian accent was thicker than usual. "So much so that it disintegrates father in one hit."
Taehyung was about to speak when the Helian riders fired at them. Jungkook simply raised a hand and created a white forcefield around the four of them. Bullets bounced off and sparked against the barrier of light.
When Taehyung turned towards Jungkook, his eyes widened. The angel was transformed into his Seraphim form, feathers pointed and irises changed to blue dots. His skin glowed with a faint white hue.
Taehyung remembered the events in Hemel's palace and nearly put his guard up. Then he noticed Jungkook's stance— he was more relaxed, more in control. The Helian prince smiled.
"We will not be able to accomplish that while the Helian army continues to attack," Jungkook had on a serious expression, something Taehyung hasn't seen in a long time. "Seriously Tae, how many soldiers does Hel have?"
Taehyung didn't really know how to answer to that so he assumed that Jungkook asked a rhetorical question instead. Still, the Helian prince did his best to think of a coherent answer.
"Father spent a decade preparing for this," Shay replied instead, her gaze fixated on King Michael's monster figure. "He recruited as many soldiers as possible. It only makes sense that the army has grown significantly."
Taehyung sighed. He thought about the countless Helians who were forced to train in the army under King Michael's tyranny, only to be killed in battle against the wonders. For a moment, he wondered if killing the army in cold blood was the right thing to do.
Then again, Taehyung knew that they didn't really have a choice, especially because the Helian army stood in their way of defeating King Michael once and for all. Still, he wished that they didn't have to sacrifice so many lives for it.
Taehyung had a sudden thought at that very moment. He glanced up at the portal and at the continuous swarm of Helian riders. "We have to close it."
"Close what?," You asked in confusion and tilted your head.
"The portal," Taehyung glance back at you with burning eyes. "If we close it, the reinforcements will stop coming."
"Doesn't sound too easy, yeah?," Jungkook's hand was still raised, the white forcefield around them still present.
"Brother, I am not quite sure if that is possible," Shay spoke slowly, her words drawn out. "I do not see why father would create an option to close the portal."
"I am quite sure that he did not, Shay," Taehyung nodded in agreement. "But we can force it to close."
Shay scrunched her eyebrows together. "How?"
Before Taehyung could reply, there was a loud screech from below. "Chim, watch out!"
Namjoon screamed when the monster suddenly whipped its tail. It slammed into the ground, shattering the ground and barely missing a still running Jimin.
"I'm alright, Joo— whoa!," Jimin nearly skid into a stop when King Michael's tail swung towards him again.
Jimin jumped high in the air and Taehyung's heart stopped for a few seconds when the thick and scaly tail swiped just under the soles of his shoes. The thunder gem bearer landed gracefully on his feet.
"I'm alright, Joonie!," Jimin repeated and smiled, his eyes crinkling into two crescents.
Namjoon couldn't help but put on a dimpled smile. It only faded when King Michael roared loudly, his wings
spreading and scraping off the sides and roofs of some buildings.
Debris, a mixture of rock and glass, started to fall to the ground. Taehyung stared and saw his team members start to panic below. With gritted teeth, the prince raised a hand.
Taehyung's palm glowed as purple mist appeared and spread throughout the air. It covered the all of the debris and levitated it before it could crash into the ground. Jimin stared up with wide eyes.
Both you and Jungkook turned towards Taehyung in shock. The Helian prince himself was honestly surprised at how his powers had been upgraded, especially because he no longer had nosebleeds or felt any sort of pain for it.
"Told you so," The gem suddenly spoke in Taehyung's head, tone cocky as usual. "Feel that power? That's all me."
Taehyung almost rolled his eyes but he held himself back. Instead, he raised his other hand and twisted his wrist. Purple mist continued to swirl as he gathered the debris in one area. Then the prince swung both of his arms sideways.
The debris crashed into King Michael's cheek and nearly knocked him off balance. He had to grab a roof's building to remain standing. Taehyung observed his slow yet deadly movements.
"Brother," Shay cocked her head at Taehyung and he was surprised to see no fear in her expression. "It seems that I have underestimated the gem's power."
"Damn straight," The gem commented again.
Taehyung was glad that he was the only one who could hear the gem's constant commentary. At the same time, the prince wondered if he had enough patience to listen to a sassy rock complain in his head for the rest of his life.
Still, Taehyung figured that hearing endless complaints was better than having his soul taken away. Despite being the official darkness gem bearer, he kept his guard up. He had to prepare for the possibility of the gem going against him again.
King Michael suddenly roared loudly and snapped Taehyung out of his thoughts. The skin of the monster's body was glowing now, razor sharp teeth in display as he continued to screech loudly.
"What's he doing?!," You screamed through the noise and crossed your arms over your face when the wind started to pick up.
Purple mist swirled around King Michael again but this time it was thin enough for Taehyung to see through. The prince was confused, especially because he couldn't see any significant changes in the monster's figure.
Taehyung didn't even have time to react because in a split-second, King Michael was lunging at him with drawn out claws.
"Father has enhanced his movement speed!," Shay hissed loudly, her eyes glowing a powerful purple. "Watch out!"
You and Jungkook managed to fly out of the way. Shay reached out to grab Taehyung as she slowly faded to teleport away. The prince reached put a hand as well. Their fingers barely brushed against each other.
Taehyung ended up being grabbed by King Michael and Shay screamed as she disappeared. The prince grunted as the monster's strong hand squeezed his whole body. Then he was slammed to the ground.
"Taehyung!," You screamed loudly and gritted your teeth, eyes burning with rage. "Let go of him!"
Despite how heavy the sword looked, Taehyung was surprised at how light it seemed when you held it. You charged forward, the black feathers of your wings glistening angrily. Then in one swift movement, you swung your weapon.
King Michael roared again but this time in pain. Taehyung's eyes widened when he realized that you had amputated the monster's arm. Dark blood spilled out of the wound and made the streets below sizzle.
"Taehyung," Namjoon ran into Taehyung's view, which wasn't really much because of his position on the ground. "Hold on."
Namjoon kneeled down next to Taehyung and grabbed one of King Michael's fingers. Heaving, the earth gem bearer pulled them off one by one until the Helian prince was free.
Taehyung grabbed Namjoon's hand as he was pulled to his feet. "Thank you, Namjoon."
Namjoon put on a dimpled smile and nodded. Taehyung returned the gesture. His ears perked when he heard something break in the air just above them both.
Taehyung looked up and was stunned for a bit when he saw King Michael's huge and scaly foot suddenly above them. Seeing the obvious intention of stomping, the Helian prince formed a forcefield around himself and Namjoon.
As expected, King Michael repeatedly stomped the forcefield. Taehyung gritted his teeth and repeatedly repaired the purple dome as the monster continued to stomp.
"Joonie!," Jimin skid across the ground and screamed from the other side of the forcefield.
"Chim!," Namjoon screamed back, his palms pressed against the purple dome.
Jimin stared at Namjoon with glassy eyes then glanced at Taehyung, who had his eyes shut tightly now. The shield was strong against the stomping but the Helian prince knew that it wasn't going to last long.
"J-Joonie, I'll get you out!," Jimin screamed in a panic. He glanced around wildly as his whole body trembled. "Uhm, I-I'll think of something!"
"Brother!," Shay screamed from above, her cape and dark hair fluttering in the wind. "Hold on!"
Taehyung wanted to scream back that he definitely was going to have a hard time holding on but instead, he gritted his teeth. The Helian prince winced when the forcefield started to crack.
At that moment, the forcefield finally gave in after one final stomp from King Michael. Taehyung collapsed on the ground with his head spinning. Purple shards turned to glitter in the air.
Taehyung honestly thought that his shield would last longer, maybe even forever, especially because he finally had access to the darkness gem's full power. The Helian prince figured that he was yet to be used to his abilities.
"You know, prince," The gem drawled in Taehyung's head and released a chuckle. "If you accepted me sooner, you would not be in this situation."
"Shut up," Taehyung hissed loudly, his eyes flashing purple. He turned around and met a confused Namjoon's eyes.
Namjoon didn't say anything but Taehyung could tell what he was thinking— I haven't said anything but I guess? A pang of guilt mixed with slight frustration hit the Helian prince.
"Namjoon, I was not talking about you—"
Taehyung's words were cut off by the explosion of purple mist right in front of his face. Coughing, the darkness gem bearer swatted away the smoke and was stunned to see Shay.
Standing in between Taehyung and Namjoon, Shay grabbed both of their arms. "Hold your breaths!"
A split second and gust of wind later, the three of them were now a few feet away from King Michael. Taehyung's head spun as he struggled to retain his balance. Namjoon wasn't doing so well either.
At that moment, King Michael slammed his foot on the ground and nearly stomped into the soil itself. Taehyung realized that if Shay was just a second late, he and Namjoon would have been smushed to their deaths.
"Thanks, sis," Taehyung managed to speak through his shaky breath.
Shay turned towards Taehyung with a stoic expression. Then she put on a soft smile and nodded. "Always welcome, brother."
Taehyung smiled back, again glad that he could finally spend moments with Shay that did not involve arguing. The prince was about to open his mouth to speak when he heard crackling from nearby.
"Joonie!," Jimin screamed, his eyes glazed with tears. He ran across the streets and left behind a charred trail.
Namjoon turned around and barely caught Jimin, who had pounced at him in a warm embrace. The earth gem bearer easily lifted him up, his grip firm around the thunder gem bearer's waist.
Jimin hooked his legs around Namjoon's waist and kissed him before he could even inhale. The two instantly melted into the kiss, their bodies turning into a mess of tangled limbs and ragged hair.
"Brother," Shay glanced at Taehyung questionably. "I do not think it is wise for them to be doing this in the middle of—"
"It is alright, Shay," Taehyung put on a small smirk. He cleared his throat and looked away from the couple. "Let them have their moment."
Shay tilted her head and was obviously confused. Sighing, the princess shook her head instead. "If you say so."
Jimin pulled away from the kiss first. His orange hair was a tangled mess, thick lips pink and swollen. The thunder gem bearer laughed lightly and pressed his forehead against Namjoon's.
"When will you stop almost dying on me?," Jimin whispered a bit, his bright yellow eyes glinting.
Namjoon chuckled and showed off his dimples. He tilted his head upwards and rubbed noses with Jimin, who giggled at the contact. "Sorry Chim, can't really do anything about that."
Jimin giggled again. He leaned forward to kiss Namjoon again but paused when a loud explosion rang from behind. The thunder gem bearer hopped back to the ground and tensed.
Emily was still shooting arrows that exploded every time they collided with King Michael's head. The monster turned around and the protector winced a bit at its piercing purple eyes.
When King Michael swung his hand upwards, Jin screamed desperately from the ground. "Emily, run!"
With a short gasp, Emily dashed across the roof. King Michael's movements were quicker and he was able to punch through the building in an instant.
Emily yelped when she felt the concrete under her feet start to lower. Losing balance for a few seconds, the protector scraped her knee as she skid back into a sprint.
King Michael roared from behind. Emily quickly glanced behind her and saw the building she was on start to collapse. Teeth gritted, the protector continued to run.
Emily stared ahead and noticed that the next building had a higher roof than the one she was on. Taking out an arrow from her quiver, the protector quickly typed on her wristband.
"Get into a high area, sure," Emily murmured and shot out the grappling hook arrow. "Yeah, what a good idea!"
With a loud scream, Emily jumped off the roof just as the building behind her collapsed completely. She grunted her body slammed against the windows of the apartment complex. Thankfully, the glass didn't shatter under her weight.
Emily tugged on the string and started to climb up the roof. Then she spotted a moving reflection on the window in front of her and paused. King Michael was lunging at her again with terrifying speed.
"Don't touch her!," Jin screamed from the ground, his eyes glowing a powerful blue.
Jin swung his hand forward and a wave of water spread across the ground. He froze it the moment King Michael stepped forward, which caused the monster to slip and crash into the ground face first.
Thankfully, Taehyung and the others were too far away to be smushed by King Michael's body. He watched as the monster fell. Dust rose from all around him as the ground cracked.
"Em!," Jin slid across the ice and sprinted towards Emily, who descended to the ground instead. "Are you okay?"
Emily looked down. She glanced at her scraped knees, along with the blood dripping down her legs, and shrugged. "Could be worse. Thanks for saving me."
Jin put on a smirk. Taehyung could tell that he was about to say something extremely cheesy and was partly thankful when he healed Emily's knees instead.
"Guys?!," You screamed from the air. Behind you, your black wings flapped wildly. "We have to keep King Michael on the ground!"
Taehyung turned around and realized that King Michael was starting to stand. The ice beneath his feet cracked and his large wings flapped as he desperately tried to regain balance.
"I got it!," Namjoon screamed and punched into the ground, his fists digging into the dirt.
The ground rumbled. Taehyung watched as lines of concrete protruded, cracking as they ran towards King Michael. Thick and hairy roots popped up from the soil and wrapped around the monster's body.
Jimin stared at Namjoon with sparkling eyes. Although Taehyung didn't have Jungkook's mind reading abilities, he could tell what the thunder gem bearer was thinking— When did he learn to do that? So cool, my Joonie.
"If someone is going to do something!," Namjoon paused when King Michael wriggled. He strengthened the roots' grip around him. "Do it now!"
Hoseok appeared in the air. A hover bike snuck up behind him but was sniped by a light beam courtesy of Jungkook. After tapping his goggles once and taking a deep breath, the air gem raised his arms.
A tornado whipped in front of Hoseok, one that was definitely bigger than the previous ones he made. With a loud yelp, he pushed his hands forward. The tornado hit King Michael and limited his movements.
"Guys?!," Hoseok winced a bit as his eyes glowed a powerful green. "The plan?!"
"Do we even have one?!," Yoongi screamed. He was standing on top of a crashed truck and was torching nearby hover-bikes. Holly snapped its jaws above him.
Taehyung took in the chaotic situation before him. Turning around, the prince could still see the Helian riders swarming in the air. One of them exploded and crashed to the ground nearby.
Atop a tall building, Mathilde strummed the string of her bow and pointed forward. She screamed orders to the Aardeian women, who all cheered simultaneously before releasing more arrows.
Some Helian riders were wise enough to flee. However, the hover-bikes who passed over the Han river weren't safe either.
Taehyung was confused for a while when he saw the river water flow in the air and snatch the hover-bikes away. Then he saw narwhals swimming over the waves, along with seahorse men and a very familiar looking squid.
"Take that!," Alec screamed as the wave tossed him and his narwhal in the sky. He grinned within his water bubble and stabbed a Helian rider. "Fear the sea, land dwellers!"
Within the Han river, a faint light glowed. Witch Cassandra stood in the midst of the waves, her eyes glowing a bright blue. She smiled menacingly and displayed rows of pointed teeth.
Taehyung turned back towards King Michael. He wasn't really sure how long he had been surveying the area but the monster was still pinned to the ground. Roots pulsed and wind blew.
"We don't have much time!," Jin made water crawl up King Michael's limbs and froze them to produce cages of ice. "Hurry!"
"Taehyung!"
Hearing your voice, Taehyung instantly turned around. You landed on the ground harshly and cracked the concrete under your feet. With a small groan, you rolled your shoulders and folded your black wings.
Taehyung couldn't help but stare. Ever since the reveal of your Helian and Hemelian abilities, something obviously changed. Your skin was definitely glowing a faint light purple hue just at the surface. Even your eyes were sparkling more than usual.
For a moment, Taehyung felt like he was floating. He became lost in your eyes as his consciousness started to fade. Dark spots started to fill the prince's vision—
Taehyung's soul literally shook when he was suddenly slapped across the face. The prince blinked hard and rubbed his aching cheek. Confused, he stared at Shay and her raised hand.
"My apologies, brother," Shay lowered her trembling hand. "Your eyes were starting to dilate. I did not know how else to snap you out of it."
"How disappointing," The gem chuckled menacingly in Taehyung's head. "I almost had you, prince. Just a tip, you are most vulnerable when you think about the guardian."
Taehyung didn't say anything to that. Instead, he ignored the throbbing pain on his cheek and flashed a smile. "Thank you, Shay."
Shay had on a thin line and looked extremely guilty. Despite that, she nodded at Taehyung sheepishly.
Taehyung was about to speak but the snapping of roots made him pause. Eyes widened, he turned around and saw King Michael slowly start to stand despite the ice and wind around him.
"We would really love that ultimate attack by now!," Namjoon screamed through the gritted teeth as he summoned more roots, which were simply torn by the monster.
Jimin stepped forward with burning yellow eyes. Bolts of lightning shot out of his fingertips. Electricity surged through the roots, stunning King Michael as he screamed.
"He's too strong!," Jimin screeched. Electricity crackled around his body. "We can't hold him much longer!"
Taehyung took a deep breath. Hearing the tapping of another set of feet, he turned around. Jungkook was on the ground, his white wings bright next to your black ones.
All three of the other royals were staring at Taehyung expectantly. The Helian prince wondered if this was what he had to deal with every single day of his life after becoming Hel's king.
Taehyung shook those thoughts away and put on a stern expression. "Kook, Sky."
Both you and Jungkook perked at the mention of your names. The Hemelian prince put on a bunny grin. "Yeah?"
"Get high up and charge your strongest attack for as long as you can," Taehyung's deep voice rumbled, his tone as stern as his expression. "Make sure to use your full power. We only have one shot."
You and Jungkook quickly glanced at each other before nodding at Taehyung. The two of you then simultaneously spread your wings and jumped in the air. Damn.
"Shay," Taehyung turned towards Shay, who tilted her head as a response. "Do you remember the tales of Adder Verdif?"
Shay's eyes immediately widened. She looked up at Taehyung with a mixture of shock and disbelief. "Brother, that is a forbidden spell. We were not allowed to learn how to cast it."
Taehyung glanced at Shay with narrow eyes, his orbs glowing a bright purple. Although no words were said, the princess understood.
"How?," Shay paused and shook her head. "How did you—"
"The spell is too dangerous and is said to shatter the caster's soul," Taehyung spoke before Shay could continue her question. "But it is also the only spell that could possibly kill father in one hit."
Contrary to what Taehyung expected, Shay laughed instead. "Brother, you cannot fool me. I have also studied Dark Arts during your absence."
Clever girl— the gem whispered in Taehyung's head. The prince ignored the voice and raised an eyebrow. "Then you are aware—"
"That the spell is rumored to shatter the souls of those who dare cast it?," Shay chuckled and put on a small smile. "Yes, brother. I am also aware that the spell is more effective when casted by two."
"Assisting me may lead to your death."
"Yours as well," Shay paused. King Michael roared in the background. "But it is a risk I— we must take... together."
Taehyung stared at Shay for a few seconds. For a moment, he imagined the future with both of them not having survived the spell. Just the mere thought of leaving you and the others behind made the prince's heart ache.
But— Taehyung thought that if his death was written in the stars then this was the way he had to go. If dying meant ridding the universe of his demon of a father then maybe his soul would be put to rest.
Even so, Taehyung didn't want to drag Shay with him. He didn't want to leave you and Jungkook behind. So the prince held onto that slim chance of survival. He wanted to live.
"Come on, sis," Taehyung cracked a small smile and gently grabbed Shay's hand. "We have survived this long. One spell will not be enough to kill the both of us."
Shay stared at her and Taehyung's intertwined hands before releasing a heavy sigh. "Alright, brother. Lead the way."
Taehyung nodded. "Mirror my movements."
With that, the Bristene siblings rose to the air as purple mist swirled around them. Taehyung glanced upwards. Jungkook's eyes were shut tight. A growing white sphere of light was crackled in between his palms.
Just a few inches away from Jungkook, you hovered with your black wings flapping powerfully. Your eyes were shut too but Taehyung could see the purple glowing from behind your eyelids.
Purple spheres were forming over both of your palms. Somehow, there was an aura surrounding your figure that made Taehyung shiver slightly. He then noticed that you were also in Seraphim form— with black wings sticking out from your calves and behind your ears.
"Brother," Although Shay's voice was calm, Taehyung could hear the desperation from her. "We must hurry."
Taehyung glanced at King Michael. Metal pipes and poles were now wrapped around the monster in a desperate attempt to keep it still. The prince knew that he had no time to question Namjoon's metal bending.
"Alright, put your hands in this position," Taehyung crossed his wrists over one another and straightened two fingers. "Follow my movements and replicate my chant carefully."
Shay nodded without hesitation and immediately crossed her wrists. Taehyung turned towards King Michael again. Yoongi was scorching the monster now but he was dangerously close to snapping the roots and metal.
Taehyung took a deep breath and carefully recalled the spell's details. He raised his right hand as his fingertip glowed a faint purple. The prince then swiped his fingers diagonally in the air. Shay followed whilst staring at him.
"To the God of all, Macht, and the first King of Hel, Gabriel," Taehyung spoke slowly, his Vredeian accent thick. "We call for your assistance."
Shay glanced at Taehyung skeptically but followed his movements without a word. The prince understood really, especially because of how strange Adder Verdif's chant was. Above them, you and Jungkook continued to charge power.
"We offer ourselves in exchange for our desire," Taehyung raised his right hand again and crossed his wrists briefly before swiping his left hand sideways. "Give us the power to defeat the evil before us."
Shay followed gently, her words mere whispers in her breath. Taehyung felt a stinging pain on his side and was unsure if it was his injury or the spell starting to take effect.
"We, the royal siblings of Hel," Taehyung crossed his arms over his chest. Shay continued to mimic him. "Ask for you to heed our call."
"You have been heard, siblings."
At first, Taehyung thought that the gem in his head was trying to fool him. Then he realized that this voice was different, that there was no cockiness or any another emotion present in it.
Taehyung winced when a sudden pain jolted throughout his entire body. Shay didn't look so well either. As horrible as it sounded, the prince knew that this was a sign— the spell worked.
"Finally, brave souls of Hel have called for us once again," Taehyung realized that the voices were the mixture of the two gods. "Use our power. Defeat the evil."
Something struck Taehyung again. This time, it was different, an overwhelming power that almost nullified the pain. At the same time, the Helian prince felt like he was going to explode any second.
Just when Taehyung started to convulse, Shay grabbed her hand. He no longer felt like exploding. The prince faced his sister and was stunned to see her face contorting in pain.
"Brother, you forgot to mention the important detail of constant physical contact," Shay smiled through the pain, her eyes glowing bright purple. "Be glad that I at least have basic knowledge of the spell."
Taehyung chuckled and felt his pointed teeth graze his lips. His eyes were identical to Shay's. Before the prince could speak, he heard a loud scream from below.
"It won't hold!," Namjoon screeched. At that moment, the metal and roots around King Michael started to snap.
"We need more time!," Jungkook hissed from above, his feathers flaring. The light sphere he had was gigantic and almost seemed to engulf him.
Yoongi rolled out of the way. Behind him, King Michael's tail slammed to the ground. Holly roared overhead. "We don't have time!"
"Stall him!," You snapped loudly. A sphere of light and darkness was forming from each of your side. "We only have one chance at this!"
"I'm on it!," Jin replied before anyone could protest. He summoned a wave of water and slid on the ground, passing by a very worried Emily.
Jin kept surfing from side to side as King Michael eyes him cautiously. He then raised his trident. A wave of water rose and froze to create a wall of ice.
Taehyung turned towards Shay. "The spell is almost done. There is only one incantation left."
Shay nodded. "Ready when you are, brother."
Taehyung put on a small smile and took a deep breath. With his eyes also glowing purple, the prince raised two fingers. "Write down Viper in our ancient language."
Shay gave a firm nod. Her fingertips glowed as she started to trace strokes in the air. As the prince did the same, he couldn't help but be impressed by his sister's stellar memory.
The siblings completed their strokes at nearly the same time. Taehyung glanced up and saw the purple mist in the air forming the letters— Poison Viper.
"Watch us from below," Taehyung took a deep breath. He could feel his heart thump against his ribcage. "As we act from the shadows."
Purple mist started to swirl around the siblings' feet. Shay flinched a bit at how sudden it was but quickly composed herself and repeated Taehyung's words.
"Armed with your magic and mist," Taehyung felt the strong wind blow his hair. At the same time, the prince could feel the power flowing in his veins. "To right what is amiss."
Dark energy branched into the sky as the purple mist started to take shape around the Bristene siblings. Taehyung could feel the gem rejoice within him— maybe it was because of all the power inside him. Maybe it was because he— they could finally take on King Michael.
Taehyung opened his eyes again. They were reptilian, dark irises thin and pupils dipped in purple ink. Fangs grew and grazed his bottom lip. Reflective scales appeared in a line down his cheeks. Shay had an identical change.
"To make our enemies repent," Taehyung smirked mischievously. "As Hel's most loyal serpent."
The purple mist thickened and finally transformed completely. Around the Bristene siblings formed a giant purple snake, its long body coiling in the sky and covering the streets of Seoul in a dark shadow.
Taehyung's glowing eyes formed the snake's right eye whilst Shay made the left. The reptile's tongue slithered as it hissed loudly. Its scales flared as it bared its fangs at King Michael, who froze suddenly.
Jin sat on the ground with tears dotting his jacket and pants. Shards of ice were littered around him. "What the heck is that?!"
"The ultimate attack!," Hoseok screamed in the air and slapped his goggles on. He flipped in the air and turned around. "Everyone get out of the way!"
Hoseok flew out of view and everyone else scrambled. Namjoon was conflicted at first but ultimately decided to cease his control over the metal and roots. He swiftly picked up Jimin and ran. Yoongi and Emily both pulled Jin to his feet and tailed the earth gem bearer.
"Ready, yeah?!," Jungkook's whole body was glowing in a white hue. The light sphere was above him now, hands trembling as he kept it in place. "Sky?!"
You didn't answer right away, which made Taehyung look up in worry. The spheres of light and darkness around you were starting to morph. After glowing brightly for a bit, the mist faded to reveal giant twin swords in your hands— one a dark and menacing purple, the other a bright and radiant light blue.
"Ready!," You screamed back in reply. The blades of your twin swords glowed. "Taehyung?! Shay?!"
"Ready!," Taehyung snapped, his scales and pointed teeth glinting. "Attack on my signal!"
Taehyung and Shay's giant snake hissed loudly. King Michael charged forward and completely broke through the wall of ice. Its limbs and wings crashed through buildings and cars below.
"Why aren't you guys attacking yet?!," Yoongi questioned loudly. He was hugging a trembling Holly close to his chest.
"Brother?!." Shay's eyes glowed powerfully. "We must attack now!"
"Not yet," Taehyung whispered. King Michael continued to thrash forward, the concrete shattering under his feet.
"Tae?!," Jungkook's Vredeian accent thickened. The light sphere in his hands was vibrating. "What are you waiting for?!"
"A closer target!," Taehyung hissed. The light from Jungkook reflected on his scales. "We cannot afford to miss!"
"He's getting too close!," Jungkook commented again, his teeth gritted.
"Not yet!," Taehyung repeated. King Michael was still storming through the streets of Seoul as smoke bellowed from the monster's mouth.
For a moment, Taehyung made eye contact with King Michael. A part of him wanted to search for any traces of his father in those monstrous orbs. Then the prince wondered if there was going to be any difference— if all along, his father and this monster were one and the same.
Taehyung clenched his jaw. "Now!"
With his grip on Shay's hand tight, Taehyung charged forward alongside her. The snake hissed again, its eyes piercing and fangs in display. Its long body continued to coil and left a trail of purple mist in the air.
Jungkook's wings spread widely, white feathers sharpening and flaring before he flew ahead. A sonic boom of light exploded behind the angel. The light sphere in his hands continued to spin.
You followed immediately, the blades of your twin swords still glowing powerfully. The black feathers of your wings were flared as well and you charged forward with a scream.
And as King Michael lunged at them with bared fangs and drawn claws, Taehyung and Shay's snake hissed. Then there was a collision of mist and bright light.
Taehyung wasn't sure if he passed out afterwards but there was a strong ringing in his ears. He knew he was falling, especially because of the strong wind flapping him from behind.
Before Taehyung could even consider that he was dying, a very familiar voice whispered in his ear, one the Helian thought he'd never hear again in his lifetime.
Queen Loriza still kept that soft tone she would have whenever she'd speak to Taehyung or Shay. The prince could feel her breath brush his cheeks.
"Wake up."
Taehyung's eyes snapped open. He attempted to stand up but instead groaned at the pain that shot up his back. Coughing, the prince realized that he was surrounded by dust and rubble.
With a loud grunt, Taehyung pushed off the boulders all around him and stood up. The prince looked around, confused at the broken desks and shattered glass surrounding him instead of concrete and wrecked cars.
Taehyung pushed himself to his feet. He felt something crumple under his feet and looked down. Underneath the prince's shoes was a large SALE! sign painted in bold red letters.
Just before Taehyung could try to figure out which store he crashed into, he heard a painful scream from nearby.
Realizing who it was, Taehyung turned around with wide eyes and screamed back. "Shay!"
"Brother!," Shay shouted again and it was followed by a bloodcurdling scream of pain.
Taehyung ran through the debris, his heart hammering in his chest as Shay's cries grew nearer. After kicking through rows of fallen cabinets, the prince finally spotted his sister.
With his breath hitched in his throat, Taehyung kneeled down next to Shay. He stared at the metal beam crushing her leg. "Shay... just look at me, okay? It's going to be fi—"
"No, it's not!," Shay screamed. Blood dripped down the corner of her mouth. "Neuken, it hurts!"
"Hold on, sis," Taehyung pushed the beam away with a cloud of purple mist. He swept Shay from the ground, carrying her bridal style. "I got you."
Taehyung stomped across the sea of debris as Shay whimpered slightly in his arms. He then crashed through the damaged glass doors and into the streets of Seoul once again.
That's when Taehyung saw the aftermath of the combined attacks against King Michael. A much larger crater was in the center of the city with large boulders crashed through other buildings. Purple veins were in the concrete, some crawling to the walls and abandoned vehicles.
Unfortunately, the collision caused some areas to burn. Nearby was that same store Taehyung remembered destroying with Greta by accident. Hoseok was extinguishing the flames of a yellow dog statue thing.
"Taehyung?! Shay?!," You screamed as you landed on the ground elegantly, black wings folding. "You two are okay! Oh, thank God—"
You shifted your gaze to the horrible injury on Shay's leg and paused. To Taehyung, there was something odd about your expression. It almost seemed like you were holding yourself back.
"Jin is a bit busy."
Jungkook suddenly spoke. Taehyung only realized the angel's presence when he heard the flapping of wings from next to him. Following his gaze, the Helian prince spotted Jin dousing burning cars in water.
"Lay her down, Tae," Jungkook ordered sternly. Taehyung nodded and carefully placed Shay on the ground. "Sorry if I am a bit slow, yeah? I only know a beginner spell."
Shay opened her mouth to say something but winced instead when Jungkook started to heal her leg. She reached out and grabbed Taehyung's hand tightly.
"You guys are alive!," Jimin exclaimed as he jogged into view with normal speed. Namjoon tailed behind him. "Phew! When you guys recoiled into that building, we thought you were goners."
Taehyung stared at them for a few seconds. Shay winced again. "How is Father?"
Everyone turned towards Namjoon, who sighed at all the eyes on him. The earth gem bearer opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by a low grumble from nearby.
"You guys nearly destroyed him," Yoongi was stroking Holly's head. The dragon purred under his touch. "And the whole city too, if I'll be honest."
"Nearly?," Shay questioned through gritted. Jungkook was fully concentrated on her leg wound.
"Amazingly, you guys blew off half of his body," Yoongi traced a line across his chest with a smirk. "But he's alive. That dude just won't die."
Taehyung and Shay glanced at each other quietly. The prince could see the mixed emotions on his sister's face and he honestly felt the same. He didn't know what he was supposed to be feeling.
For a moment, it was silent. All Taehyung could hear was the faint buzzing of Jungkook's spell and Jin's whistling as he put out flames. Then a loud voice called from nearby.
"Crowned Prince!," General Jisoo ran into view, her electric staff littered with scars. Her hair was disheveled. A large gash ran across her cheek.
"General Jisoo," Taehyung kept a calm tone despite his surprise. "I am glad to see that you are all right."
"I as well, Crowned Prince," General Jisoo nodded with a smile. "But Olivia of LOONA says that she has crucial information for you."
General Jisoo moved aside and revealed Olivia. Her claws were still drawn but some of them looked dull. The wolf mask on the Helian's head was missing patches of fur and her pale skin was dotted with blood and dust.
"Crowned Prince Taehyung," Olivia took a deep breath and raised a hand. She held a common Vredeian circular phone. "Vivi would like to speak to you."
Taehyung nodded and politely took the the phone from Olivia. "Vivi?"
"Crown— Pri—," Vivi's voice crackled from the other side of the portal. Taehyung could hear gunfire. "The portal— just like you said— we can close it!"
Taehyung huffed triumphantly. He felt the gazes on him and turned around to see everyone's stunned looks. Jungkook in particular was in obvious disbelief— You really planned this all? The angel's face screamed his thoughts.
"We considered your suggestion and created an EMP device," Vivi spoke much faster now. Her voice nearly overpowered the static. "We tested it on the lowest level and the portal closed for a few seconds."
Taehyung smiled and held the phone closer to his face. "Close it."
Vivi made a considerable pause. Static rang again. "But Crowned Prince... if we close the portal now, it will affect all other inflection points."
"The others have to get back," Taehyung whispered and turned towards the others. "Tell everyone to retreat before the portals close!"
"Aye aye captain!," Hoseok saluted playfully and put on a heart shaped smile. He jumped into the air and flew towards the roof of a building.
"Go and warn the others," Namjoon nodded at Jimin, who obviously didn't want to leave him. "I'll catch up."
Jimin nodded. He tiptoed and pecked Namjoon's cheek before speeding away. With flushed cheeks, the earth gem bearer put on a dimpled smile.
"Brother, is it not best if your friends go on ahead?," Shay suddenly suggested. Her wound was nearly completely healed. "If the portal closes before they make it through—"
"Then they will be trapped here on Earth. I understand, Shay," Taehyung nodded and turned towards Namjoon, who was surprisingly calm. "Which is why I suggest that the others travel to Vrede first."
"What nonsense are you spouting out again?," Yoongi scowled despite the worried expression etched on his face.
Taehyung smiled. "We still have business to take care of with father. You all should travel back to Vrede with the rest—"
"And leave you two behind?," Namjoon raised an eyebrow. He then chuckled and shook his head. "Not a chance. If you're staying behind, we all are."
Nobody said anything for a few seconds. Taehyung was honestly impressed by the team's synchronization. It was almost like everyone was connected to Namjoon's mind and had silently agreed with him.
"I am unsure if you understand, wonders," Vivi's trembling voice rang from the phone. "If you do not come back now, you may never set foot on Vrede again."
"We'll find a way back," Everyone turned towards you. With a smile, you nodded firmly. "Don't we always?"
Your words brought a smile to everyone's faces. Taehyung knew how heavy the decision was, especially with all the combined efforts that spanned months to lead up to this. Being away from Vrede was going to be a huge disappointment.
But nobody seemed to be bothered by that. Taehyung wasn't either— at least, not as much as he initially expected.
"All right," Vivi sighed loudly. "I shall close the portal within the span of a minute. Good luck, Crowned Prince and Princess."
A short buzz rang from the phone, signaling the call's end. Taehyung passed the device back to Olivia, who bowed formally out of instinct.
"We should lead the others home, yeah?," Jungkook lifted his hands, which made Taehyung realize that Shay was now healed. "Will the two of you be all right?"
"Yes, Kook," Taehyung glanced at Shay, who returned a smile. "We will be fine."
Jungkook nodded and hopped to his feet. He took one last glance at Taehyung before jumping into the air with an explosion of light. You followed the angel as well.
Emily and Yoongi ran out of view in opposite directions. Namjoon was left standing a few feet away from the siblings with his arms crossed over his chest.
"He's in the biggest crater," Namjoon whispered, his voice barely audible to Taehyung. "We figured you guys would want to see him first."
With that, Namjoon sprinted away. Taehyung gently helped Shay to her feet. "Can you stand, sis?"
"Yes, brother," Shay slipped away from Taehyung's grip. She wobbled slightly but quickly regained her balance. "Father is... we must—"
"I know," Taehyung squeezed Shay's shoulder gently. "Let's go."
Although it only took a few minutes, Taehyung felt like the walk to the crater took ages. He could hear the pebbles crunching against his feet. Looking up, the prince spotted Emily guiding the Aardeian rebels on a roof.
No more Helian warships were appearing. Taehyung glanced at the portal and saw it ripple slightly. Everyone else continued to scramble and the prince barely caught sight of Olivia walking through a lamppost.
Taehyung stopped when he was standing at the edge of the crater. A pebble rolled down as Shay stood next to him. The little rock bounced and hit what was left of King Michael.
Now Taehyung understood what Yoongi meant when he traced a line across his chest. King Michael was no longer in monster form but his lower body was completely gone. What was left of the Helian king was a third of his upper torso, an arm and his head.
Taehyung thought about Yoongi's words— That guy just won't die. He glanced at Shay, who just stared at King Michael blankly. "You ready?"
Shay nodded and stepped forward. Taehyung watched her slide down the crater for a few seconds before he followed. Now that the prince had a closer look, King Michael would have looked dead if it wasn't for his rising and falling chest.
"My children," King Michael spoke suddenly, his voice cracked and hoarse. "Look at how strong you have become."
Shay's eye twitched and Taehyung could tell that she was about to spit words at King Michael. The prince then made a gesture, telling his sister to let him speak.
"Using a forbidden spell against me... I would never have thought that either of you would grow the balls to do so," King Micheal chuckled dryly before blood spluttered out of his mouth. "Truly, because of me, you two have become the fiercest royals in the universe."
Taehyung slowly lowered his hand. A silence passed as wind blew both his and Shay's hair. King Michael continued to spit out blood but somehow was still chuckling throughout it.
"Was it worth it?," Taehyung asked sternly. Shay glanced at him silently. "Losing everything for this chance of power... was it worth it?"
King Michael put on a sadistic grin. "Have I really lost everything? Seeing you two like this—"
"Answer the question," Shay hissed loudly, her eyes burning with rage. "Was it worth it?"
King Michael didn't say anything, instead his smile faded and he released a loud sigh. Taehyung waited in both anxiousness and anticipation, although a part of him knew that they weren't going to get an answer.
"Before your mother died," King Michael's tone was suddenly soft. This made Taehyung put his guard up. "She told me that the two of you were going to change the world someday."
Taehyung's eyes welled up with tears but he turned away before King Michael would mock him for it. The prince had another flashback of Queen Loriza's final moments. He gritted his teeth.
"I did not believe her back then," King Michael whispered softly. "But now I do."
Taehyung felt his whole body tremble as he balled his hands to fists. It felt like something within him was brewing to a boiling point. Shay glanced at him in worry.
"Hey prince," The gem spoke suddenly in Taehyung's head, tone not as cocky. "I understand your anger but I do not think it is wise for you to let your emotions control you."
"Brother," Shay whispered from next to Taehyung with creased eyebrows. "Please, this is what father wants."
Realizing that Shay was right, Taehyung took a deep breath. He opened his eyes and saw King Michael glancing up at him with a small smirk. The prince mentally scolded himself for nearly falling into his father's trap once again.
"If you think mentioning mother can earn you the sympathy you never gave us," Taehyung spoke slowly, his tone calm yet terrifying. Shay swallowed hard. "Then you are mistaken."
King Michael still had a smile on his face. Taehyung slowly grabbed the snakehead staff strapped to his back. The weapon was coated in purple mist before it morphed into a long spear with a scaly body.
Taehyung walked towards King Michael, his footsteps menacing as he crushed the rocks under his shoes. With dark eyes, his gaze pierced as he glared at the still smirking Helian king. Shay was silent behind him.
"My, my, look at you," King Michael chuckled again. Blood caked his lips and chin. "You've always looked at me like that, Taehyung. So furious. So bloodthirsty."
Taehyung tightened his grip on the spear. He spun it until the sharp tip faced downwards. Eyes still dark, the prince walked closer to King Michael and raised the weapon.
The spear's blade glinted under the sunlight. Taehyung's mind was slightly clouded by his anger, thus only one thought looped like a broken record— Kill him. Kill him now.
"I am sure you will make a great King, my son," King Michael grinned widely with narrowed eyes. "Just like I taught you."
Taehyung blinked as those words gave his mind clarity. Just like I taught you. The prince realized that even in his final moments, King Michael still tried to manipulate him. Killing him in cold blood like this would make him no different from his father.
And that's when Taehyung understood everything— why King Michael treated him differently than Shay, why he tried so hard to make him the ideal heir. His father could see himself in the Helian prince. He wanted him to be.
Taehyung slowly lowered his weapon and he noticed how King Michael's smirk faded instantly. "You have always tried to mold me as you are."
"That's because you are, Taehyung."
"No, Father," Taehyung stepped backwards with a loud sigh. "I was never like you. And I never will be."
Taehyung glanced at an awfully silent Shay. She was just staring at King Michael blankly with her hands clasped tightly. The prince thought about his sister and all that she had to go through in the palace alone.
Truthfully, Taehyung regretted leaving Shay the most. If he had the ability to turn back time, he would definitely use it to take her away from the kingdom those many years ago.
"Shay," Taehyung called and offered his snake skinned spear to her.
Shay stared at the weapon with creased eyebrows before turning towards Taehyung in absolute confusion. "Brother? What are you—"
"Words cannot describe how much I regret leaving you behind," Taehyung spoke before Shay could continue speaking. "And I do not have the right to condemn what you went through. But one thing I am sure of... is that if anyone must do it, it is you."
Shay stared at Taehyung as her eyes glassed with tears for a few seconds. The princess blinked them away and smiled. Her hand trembled slightly as she took the spear from her brother's hands.
With a deep breath, Shay stepped towards a now silent King Michael. She gripped the staff tightly and swallowed dryly. "Hello, father."
"Shay," King Michael replied rather coldly but his features softened once he looked up at her. "...You have your mother's eyes. Why have I not noticed that before?"
"There are a lot of things you have not noticed about me," Shay spoke quietly and gritted her teeth. "Maybe you would know... if you actually saw me."
A short silence passed. Taehyung stared with his guard up and feared the possibility of King Michael somehow attacking even in this state.
Shay raised the spear high in the air. She still trembled, Taehyung could see it clearly, and the expression on her face was a mixture of pain and relief.
"You know," King Michael put on am ambiguous smile that Taehyung could not read. "I never thought it would be you. I am not sure if I should be impressed or stunned that it took this long."
"It is a shame that this had to happen," Shay put on a smile. "Is it not, Father?"
In one swift movement, Shay stabbed the spear into King Michael. Taehyung gasped a bit. The Helian King spat out blood as the princess twisted the blade in his chest.
When Shay pulled the spear out, Taehyung was hit with a sudden realization. That was it. All he had worked for all his life has come down to this— King Michael was dead.
Taehyung honestly didn't think that things would go this smoothly, even with how much he had planned. He stared at King Michael's body and at the pool of blood growing underneath him.
"Brother?," Shay stared at Taehyung with wide eyes. The spear in her hands was coated in blood.
Taehyung was about to ask why Shay looked so worried when he felt it— fresh hot tears were streaming down his face. The prince was confused, not because he didn't feel it at first but because of why he was crying.
Then Taehyung took another look at King Michael and realized why. Despite all that happened, the mere fact that killing their own father like this was something they had to do— It still upset him.
Taehyung heard the clatter of his staff as it was tossed to the ground. Before he could register what happened, Shay engulfed him in a tight hug.
"Brother, it is alright now," Shay sniffed over Taehyung's shoulder. "It is over."
Taehyung smiled as his tears continued to fall silently. Shay was crying as well, he could tell by her breathing and trembling body. The prince rubbed circles on his sister's back as she continued to sniffle.
"So this is it."
Hearing Hoseok's voice, Taehyung pulled away from the hug and turned around. The air gem bearer's feet tapped the ground as he slowly landed in the crater. One of the goggle lenses was stained with dirt.
"We've done it, haven't we?," Hoseok stared at King Michael's body with a stoic expression. "The legend of the seven wonders... worked out pretty well, didn't it?"
"I can't believe it," Jin stood at the edge of the crater, his hand gently gripping Emily's waist. "This is the end."
"I'm honestly just glad we all made it out alive," Jimin released a heavy sigh. He was holding hands with Namjoon.
"About that ice cream," Yoongi plopped his ass on the ground. Holly silently sat on his shoulders. "Can we have some now?"
Taehyung couldn't help but smile through his tears. "Apologies, Yoongi. We may have destroyed every single building here, including your ice cream store."
"Damn it," Yoongi clicked his tongue. "No ice cream then."
Everyone laughed out loud at Yoongi's remark. Hoseok put on a heart shaped smile. "You and your ice cream."
"We could try McDonald's," You shrugged. Everyone who wasn't from Vrede glanced at you with sparkling eyes. "Saw it intact a few blocks away during the fight."
"How the hell did McDonald's survive this," Emily shook her head and laughed. Jin glanced at her fondly. "But I am craving some fries."
"Dibs on a Big Mac."
"I want chicken nuggets!"
"For a fast food place, their hash browns are delectable."
"You rich son of a bi—"
"Uhm," Jungkook asked suddenly, his tone catching everyone's attention. The angel brushed his blonde hair away from his face. "What's a McDonald's?"
Taehyung and Shay stared at head and anticipated the response to Jungkook's question. Instead of replying, however, everyone burst into laughter. The three royals were left confused.
"Not to spoil the party or anything," Namjoon sighed, his dimples popping. Jimin tilted his head at him. "But what now?"
"What do you mean?," You asked. Taehyung saw the purple mist fading behind you and realized that your wings were gone.
"We've defeated Hel's king and claimed all the kingdoms," Namjoon tightened his grip on Jimin's hand. "What do we now?"
"The wonders must rule the kingdoms of Vrede to continue the peace," Shay spoke up with a stern tone. "Just like the prophecy says."
"How?," Jimin asked sadly, his gaze facing the ground. "The portals are closed. Aren't we stuck here?"
Taehyung instantly felt the heavy tension in the air. To him, it was interesting to see all the humans feel sorrow over the fact they could no longer come back to a planet they've been to for a few months.
Then Taehyung blinked when an idea formed in his head.
"Not really," Taehyung finally said. Everyone instantly turned towards him.
"Are you serious?," Jungkook laughed. "Did you think this far ahead?"
"Nah Kook, I just thought about this now," Taehyung chuckled at the wide eyed expression on Jungkook's face. "I am sure you all remember the portal back in Egypt, yes?"
Everyone nodded simultaneously. Taehyung remembered that it was where he and Shay met again for the first time in years.
"The EMP device LOONA used will only affect the portals in this area," Taehyung started as everyone's expressions lit up one by one.
"So the one in Egypt is still there..." You trailed off with wide eyes. Taehyung nodded.
"What are we waiting for then?," Jimin squealed and hopped a bit in place. Namjoon grinned. "Let's go!"
"Hold on, Chim," Namjoon held an excited Jimin's shoulders as he continued to bounce. "There is still something we have to do."
"Like what, Joonie?," Jimin tilted his head at him curiously.
"Well, I plan to visit a few places before we go," Namjoon glanced at all the humans in the team. "And I'm sure the others have plans too."
Everyone else took a moment of silence before nodding. Taehyung didn't protest, after all he understood where they were coming from.
"Also," Namjoon grinned with his dimples. "I'd like a McBurger too."

Although I still have two final chaps to write for this, I would like to say thank you to everyone for all the love and support. Don't worry, I already have my next long fic Hell's Watchdogs ready! Make sure to add it to your reading lists uwu
