5. Unlock
"You should at least eat something before you leave, Sky."
You ignored K and slipped on a grey hoodie. You were in a bad mood, especially because this morning wasn't your best. First of all, Yoongi had stolen your watch and now you were blind. Second, you were so hungry that you could eat your own arm but you didn't have any money. Lastly, you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, literally, and fell on the floor.
"Even if I do want to eat, I don't have any food," You snapped as you walked across the hotel room, the floorboards creaking with every step. It wasn't a five star hotel, sadly, instead it was something close to being called "run-down." It was better than nothing.
You made sure that your silver hair was in a bun and tucked it in under your hat, before putting on your hood. While you were walking towards the door, your foot suddenly slipped through a hole in the floor, scratching your leg. You groaned, both out of pain and frustration at how your room was slowly tearing apart.
"Are you okay?," K asked in concern, although you knew that deep inside, she really didn't care.
You wordlessly tugged your leg out of the hole and stared at the huge gash in your inner thigh. You flinched a bit at how much blood there and was starting to worry about treating it, when purple mist suddenly wrapped around your leg. It was healed in a matter of seconds.
Even though you were used to all this supernatural stuff, K's healing abilities still left you in awe. "Thanks, K, I guess."
K didn't reply. You didn't need to hear one, to be honest.
After making sure that your room was locked, you exited the apartment building and looked around. Without the watch, you had no idea how you were going to find Yoongi. You gritted your teeth and kicked a nearby pebble, the anger settling in you once again.
"You're starting to develop a bad temper, Sky," K said as you continued kicking the same pebble while walking on the sidewalk.
"I just can't believe that Yoongi stole me," You sighed and looked up, the brightness of the sun blinding you temporarily. "Even after I tried to help him..."
"When I was still alive, I studied about you humans. Each of you have these... emotions, correct? And reasonability. Maybe he did it for his own purpose," K said like some kind of professor, which, to be honest, creeped you out. Then, you took her words in. Did that mean that her kind did not have any emotions?
"Stop talking about us like we're some kind of animal you research about," You said in a whisper as you passed by a couple who was displaying a little too much of their attention. You glared at them, disgusted by how they were acting.
K didn't even apologize. Maybe she didn't really have any emotions.
After walking a few blocks, you passed by a televesion store, the current channel catching your eye. It was an Spongebob, that one episode where they were in the past and everyone was a caveman. You couldn't help but remember the spongebob caveman meme, which made you smirk a bit.
You stood there, sometimes laughing at the cartoon's ridiculousness and sometimes brainstorming about where Yoongi could possibly be. You unconsciously held your vacant wrist and sighed.
"I'm not from anywhere, actually."
"Maybe he did it for his own purpose."
"Yoongi said he's not from here, so where would he take my watch?," You mumbled as you watched giant Gary run over poor little Squidward.
When you remembered the stones that K added on the strap of your watch (for decoration, she claimed), your eyes widened. Being in a similar situation as him, you figured it out, and snapped your fingers in victory.
"Of course. Why didn't I think of that?"
-
Yoongi stared at the sign of the pawn shop, your still glowing watch in his hands. He was balancing himself on his skateboard, the wind blowing some strands of his hair, making him look like he was in some kind of photoshoot.
Pawn King. The only place where you'll feel like a king.
It was a horrible slogan, Yoongi knew, and it was pretty shady too but it was the only pawnshop that was nearby. He didn't want to go somewhere far and risk running into you. He could have you arrested and he didn't want to rot in jail.
Yoongi glanced at his bracelet and now he was sure that something was swirling around inside the gem. He squinted his eyes and looked closer. There was definitely something in there, something alive, something color---
"Excuse me, sir?"
Upon hearing the voice, Yoongi snapped his head upwards and saw a man in a white suit staring back at him. He was peeking through the door of the pawn shop and was giving him a smug look.
"...The pawn shop is open sir," The man said blandly, as if he was reading a script. He definitely wasn't fond of his job. "You may come in."
Yoongi didn't even notice that the pawn shop was closed, since he stared at the signage as soon as he arrived. He stepped on his skateboard, flipping it and landing perfectly in his hands, before he entered the shop.
The bell jingled as the door opened and the first thing Yoongi noticed was the shelf of antique jars. Some of them looked brand new while the others looked like they would break at the slightest touch.
One jar, in particular, caught Yoongi's attention. It was huge, almost as tall as him, and it was at least as wide as a tire. He gulped, feeling uneasy, because it was big enough for a person to fit in it.
"Buy or pawn?," Yoongi turned around and saw the employee sitting behind the counter, his fingers drumming on the wood impatiently. He silently walked towards him and pulled out the watch from his pocket.
"Pawn," Yoongi whispered and placed the watch on the counter. "How much is it worth?"
The man held the watch in his palm and examined it with expertise. He felt the strap, feeling its material, and touched the stones that were studded on the sides. Then he stared at the glass, which was glowing because of Yoongi's presence, which was made of quartz. It was definitely worth a lot.
However, it all changed when he saw Yoongi's bracelet.
"It's a fake," The man said in a heartbeat, which made Yoongi scrunch his eyes in confusion. He was sure that it was a luxurious watch. "However, that bracelet, is priceless."
"This?," Yoongi raised his hand, showing off the bracelet, and the man just stared. He had changed his mind on the way to the pawn shop and he wasn't planning on pawning it, well, he would if he needed to. "Sorry, I'm not pawning this."
"Sir, please understand," The man clawed at Yoongi's bracelet in desperation, making the latter draw his hand back in surprise. "It's one of the rarest bracelets in the world. The chain is made of pure gold and the gem... No words can describe the gem's worth."
"I'm not pawning it," Yoongi spat, the man's actions scaring him a bit, so he took the watch and made his way towards the door. The bracelet was priceless, yes, which was why he wasn't planning on getting rid of it any time soon.
However, before Yoongi could step away from the counter, the man grabbed the hem of his jacket and tugged, both in desperation and anger. "Give me the bracelet."
"No. Let go of me," The man's actions were really starting to freak him out, so he pulled his jacket and sprinted to the door. He just wanted to get out.
Yoongi's way was blocked when you appeared at the other side of the glass door.
"Shit," Yoongi whispered under his breath, as you entered the shop, steam coming out of your ears.
"Yoongi, you bastard," Anger seeping from you like soup from a pot and Yoongu just stared at you with wide eyes. "I try to help you and you steal from me?!"
"Look lady, I'm sorry, you can have your watch back," Yoongi threw the watch at you, which you almost didn't catch. You stared at him with a raised eyebrow as he tried to find a way around you. "Get out of the way and let me leave."
"You can't just leave after stealing from me," You spat and crossed your arms, not budging from your place, which made Yoongi grunt in frustration. "You're lucky that I didn't call the police on yo---"
Yoongi then grabbed your arm and pulled you towards him. He glanced at the employee before he leaned in, his lips nearly brushing against your ear, and whispered. "Listen to me. This guy, he's really creeping me out. He doesn't accept anything that I want to pawn and he really, really wants my bracelet. Please, just let me leave."
You gulped and glanced at the man, who was now standing in front of the counter and staring at both of you. You didn't know what was going on but knowing that someone — no, something — had already found Yoongi and was after his bracelet, was not a good thing.
"We need to leave," You said, taking a glance at the man once more, who was dangerously close to the giant jar at the side of the room.
Although Yoonginwas confused by your sudden agreement, he nodded. "You don't have to tell me twice."
"You're not going anywhere."
Yoongi flinched when he felt hot breath at his nape. He nearly fell when he turned around and became face to face with the man.
"Give me the bracelet," The man grabbed Yoongi's wrist tightly, nearly bruising him, his voice octaves lower.
"What the— Let go of me!," Yoongi tried pulling his arm off but the man's grip was just too tight.
Neither you and Yoongi foresaw what happened next.
The man smiled, the skin of his face tearing, revealing multiple rows of sharp teeth. His skin turned to a palish white color, his eyes turning to black voids, and tentacles sprouting out of his back like a flower. Yoongi froze as one of the tentacles started to wrap around Yoongi's arm.
"Give me the bracelet," The man said, his voice sounding different, demonic even.
Yoongi's gem had reacted to the man's touch and now it was glowing brightly, even more than your watch. You stared at it, trying to figure out why it was glowing so much.
"Not this time," Yoongi said after gathering all of his strength and hitting the man — no, the creature — across the head with his skateboard.
As the creature shrieked, it let go of Yoongi's arm, so the latter immediately grabbed your arm and pulled you out of the store. All the people walking around stared as the two of you ran. You went with him willingly, still in a daze.
What just happened?
"Listen here," Yoongi said when you two were far enough, holding you by the shoulders and shaking you roughly. "I don't know what that thing was and I'm scared out of my wits right now but I know that you have something to do with this. Who are you?"
Who are you. That was the question you yourself couldn't answer. You were Sky, yes, but you also weren't. Now, you were the guardian of the seven wonders, one who had no past, no present and no identity.
Your mission wasn't only to find the seven stones, it was also to find yourself.
"Your bracelet," You breathed and glanced at Yoongi's gem, which was starting to fade back to its grey color. "It isn't exactly... just a bracelet."
"...What do you mean?," Yoongi whispered, his arms falling from your shoulders and down to your arms. He had a look in his eyes, desperation. He wanted to know.
"That gem... it was passed down to you from your great, great grandfather, right?," You said slowly, Yoongi nodding, even though he was surprised that you knew. "The truth is... that gem is no ordinary gem. It's actually—"
You were cut off by screams.
The creature had escaped the pawn shop, scaring the civilians. Now it was standing on its insect-like legs, tearing through the suit it once wore. It's long tentacles stabbed through anything in its path. It was walking, towards the two of you.
"Run," You whispered. Yoongi had already did.
The creature roared as it crawled on buildings and stabbed through random people. You and Yoongi ran, not really knowing where to go, but you both knew that it was the only way to stay alive.
You were frustrated by how K was silent during the whole thing. You had no idea how to deal with this creature and it didn't help that you didn't have any superna—
Then, it hit you. Yoongi did. You just have to activate his gem.
Meanwhile, Yoongi was still trying to grasp the situation. He was currently being chased by a monster and was accompanied by a strange girl who knew about his ancestors. It was definitely creepy and weird but he didn't know what else he was supposed to do at the moment.
Yoongi glanced at his bracelet, the gem fading in out and from tine to time. He didn't know what it meant, since it was the first time that it acted that way, but he definitely knew that it was connected to the monster that was trying to kill him.
"The truth is, that gem is no ordinary gem."
Yoongi had realized something. The reason why the creature wanted his bracelet so badly. It was after the gem.
"Heads up," Yoongi said without even a slight warning, before carrying you like a sack and throwing you at a bunch of garbage cans, cushioning your landing.
"Yoongi!," You screamed and sunk in the stack of garbage cans as the said boy started to skate away, the monster dangerously close to his tail.
Yoongi didn't know why but the first thing that came to his mind was to keep you safe. So, he did. But what now? Thanks to his skateboard, he was faster, but he had nowhere to go.
The monster stabbed its tentacle on the ground, scratching Yoongi's arm and nearly piercing his skateboard. Soon, more tentacles started piercing through randomly and Yoongi had to act like some kind of Formula One driver to dodge them.
Not wanting to steer the monster towards more civilians, he headed to an alley, which was a big mistake.
A dead end.
Yoongi slid the skateboard, just in time to brake his run before he hit the brick wall. He had nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, he was trapped.
Yoongi gulped as the monster slowly came towards him and growled, drops of its saliva falling onto the ground. It released one last tentacle and the boy was barely able to spread his legs as it pierced through its skateboard and broke it into two.
As the tentacles wrapped around Yoongi's neck and lifted him up, he could only think of one thing: He was cornered, defenseless, like always.
Yoongi started to choke as the tentacles tightened around his neck, cutting off his air supply. The monster grinned in pleasure as he wriggled desperately, to hopefully set himself free. He clawed at the slimy limbs, to no avail. He was running out of breath. Dangerously fast.
As Yoongi shut his eyes, he wasn't exactly happy about the life that flashed before his eyes.
Another slap. Yoongi sometimes mistook it as a greeting from his mother, since not a single day would pass without him receiving one. She had gotten mad over something small. He had forgotten to take off his shoes before going to bed and, of course, it was enough to anger his mother, to the point of hitting her own child.
"You're so stupid, Yoongi! How many times do I have to tell you?!"
Another slap. Yoongi cried.
"Don't you cry on me, mister."
And another. Yoongi cried harder.
"You're just like your father. Stupid, worthless, helpless. You were a mistake. All you are is another mouth to feed. I wish you were never born."
Yoongi had wished the same throughout his childhood. He lived it all with constant beatings from his mother, for both small and big reasons.
The situation worsened when his mother forced to quit school and now he was home all day, every day. It hurt him, both physically and emotionally, but he didn't have any power to do anything. She was the adult. He was the child. He was powerless.
It was when Yoongi turned eighteen that he finally came to his senses. His mother would still beat him but now he was immune to it, his heart hardening to stone. He learned to toughen up and defend himself, sometimes talking back, earning an even worse beating by doing so.
One last slap woke him. He was tired of being the defenseless little boy, the victim. This time, he was in control.
"I'm in control," Yoongi said in one breath, which confused the monster, because it was sure that he had died of suffocation. "I... am in control."
Yoongi opened his eyes, which were now a bright orange color, as he held the tentacles around his throat. The monster screamed as the tentacles sizzled under his touch and soon enough, it had let go, and he was on the ground.
Yoongi stood up in confidence, the monster looking down at him in fear, and raised a hand at it. All the emotions he felt towards his abusive mother and his missing father just made him snap... but it had also unlocked a hidden power that resided deep inside him.
"I'm no longer the victim," Yoongi spat, his glare literally burning. "From now on, I am in control."
As Yoongi's gem started glowing bright red, anger started to burn in his chest, just like the flames that shot out of his fingertips.
