4. First Love

"Go my little lieveling, find yourself a host."

-

"Earlier this morning, a strange sighting has been captured in the West Philippines waters."

The news report caught your attention, so you peeked under your hat and glanced at the television screen. You shook your glass a little, the ice shaking inside, before sipping some more of your juice. You glanced around you, a natural instinct that you've gained after running around for two weeks.

"A sea monster, that's what the locals called it. This unidentified creature has devastated dozens of fishermen after---"

The waitress of the diner switches the channel after one of the customers complained about it being too graphic for her children. Now you were staring at Dora skipping down a tunnel.

"It's getting worse," K said in your head, as you tipped your hat downwards once again, to cover your face. You also had your silver hair tied in a bun, also covering it, since the incident in the hospital lead you to being on the police's watchlist.

"Obviously," You said a bit too harshly, while putting on your face mask. You caught an old man staring at you, maybe because you looked like you were talking to yourself, and glared. "What?"

He immediately looked away.

"It's not like you to be snappy," K said with some sort of slur, which made you scoff.

"I'm just pissed off that I haven't found any of the wonders," You whispered as you dug in your pockets for change. These past few days, you've felt like a beggar, since you jumped from place to place, not having the chance to get a stable job, thus the scarcity of money. You finally found some change and placed it on the counter. "All these people are dying and I can't do anything about it."

"Don't blame yourself," K tried to sooth you, although her tone was flat. "Running from the police is hard enough. What more finding seven specific people in this big country?"

You sighed as you counted your change again, making sure that it was enough to pay for your juice. You honestly haven't eaten a good meal in a while and you were hungry but you didn't have any money.

As you handed the waitress your payment, she stared at you right in the face. You stared back, returning the burning glare. Just behind her was a wanted poster of a "girl with silver hair." You gulped, hoping that she wouldn't recognize you.

After the waitress broke eye contact, you immediately exited the diner. You glanced at your watch as you walked with big steps, hoping that it would at least glow. You wanted to find one of the wonders, especially because you couldn't afford to waste any more time.

"We're lucky that the invasion is slow-paced," K had told you the night you escaped from the hospital, while you were climbing down the window. "You have at least half-a-year to gather the seven wonders."

"At this rate, everyone will be dead before I even find them," You mumbled, your eyes fixated on your watch. There was no reply from K, which was the opposite of what you had expected, so you assumed that she gone to do other things... Whatever spirits did.

You took this opportunity to go through what your life has become. Now, you didn't have a permanent home or friends. Since you lost your cellphone you had now way to contact Emily, who most probably thinks that you're dead. Once more, you dug your hand into your pocket and pulled out what was inside. A candy wrapper and a coin. That was it.

You sighed and looked up, just to be greeted by a full moon. There was not a single star in the sky, just like how you had nobody else in your life. During those two weeks, you wished that you were normal. You wished that you weren't the guardian of the seven wonders.

You wished that you had died in that fire, along with all the innocent children and nuns.

You wished that he, your protector, never left you.

You wished that you weren't alone all your life.

As you adjusted your watch, you noticed something. First of all, it was really dark but there were still a bunch of guys riding on skateboards. Second, there were no cars on the road, which was strange because you were in a city. Lastly, your watch was glowing.

It wasn't the regular purple glow that your watch always had. Instead, it was glowing bright blue, almost white, and staring at it for a while made your eyes ache. You didn't know if the color of the glow being the same as one of the gems' was relevant, but you were glad that you were finally nearby one of the bearers.

"He's nearby," K suddenly said, making you jump. "Just keep looking."

"I already am," You said, turning corners based on the how the glow was fading in and out. "Which gem is it? Also, where the hell were you?"

"I was visiting someone," K said, with a tone that said her answer was final, so you didn't question her any further. Still, you wondered who a dead person would visit. "I can't tell which gem it is. This bearer, I think he isn't aware of his powers, just like the others."

"So I have to figure it out then," You mumbled, fully aware that K could hear you, and continued walking. Now the glow was extremely bright, as if you were standing in front of the bearer.

When you looked up, you saw a man's horrified face for a split-second, before someone crashed into you.

There was sharp pain on your forehead, before you landed on the floor, on your back. You groaned as you rubbed your now red forehead and felt a weight on top of you. There was a sound of something rolling on the concrete and you didn't need to look to know that it was a skateboard.

The person's grey hair was on your face, which made you cough. After a while, the boy grunted and got up, not even bothering to help you stand.

As the boy brushed the dust off his jeans and rustled his own hair, he gave you the most annoying stank face you've ever seen. "Watch where you're going, would you?"

"Excuse me?," You narrowed your eyes as you regained your balance, taking a glance at your glowing watch once more. It was glowing like crazy and you knew that this jerk was a bearer. "If I recall correctly, you were the one who crashed into me. Why are you even riding a skateboard at this time of the evening? What if you got hit by a car?"

"You were the one who just stopped walking all of a sudden. Also, I'm not stupid enough to actually be on the road," The man said as he rolled his eyes, giving you the urge to punch him in the face. As he rubbed his forehead, which was also red like yours, you noticed the bracelet that he was wearing.

The bracelet had a gold chain, it's design being multiple swirls flowing around a much thicker base. Sitting horizontally at the center was a gem, it's size and shape very familiar to you, except that it was lacking any color. It was grey, like a stone, which confused you.

"Like I said, he isn't aware of the gem's power," K said as you watched the man put on a beanie, which had fallen off his head after your collision. He was still giving you that stank face, which just irritated you. "It will be useless if he doesn't activate the gem. You'll have to help trigger it somehow, so stick around him."

"I'm not staying around this jerk," You snarled, catching the attention of the man, since your voice was louder than it usually was.

"Well, this jerk is leaving," The man scoffed as he picked up his skateboard. As he started walking away, you stared at his back. He was wearing a red varsity jacket, his name printed on the back with big letters, a number 9 right under it.

Yoongi. At least, this time, you were able to get the bearer's name.

"Dammit," You heard Yoongi hiss under his breath, his nails digging into his black beanie in frustration. "Those fucking idiots. How could they just leave when they know that I'm not from here?!"

You just watched as Yoongi ranted in front of you. Based on what he said, you figured that the other skaters were his friends and he was tagging along. He looked frustrated, so you knew that he definitely didn't know his way around the city.

You suddenly had an idea and it alone made you disgusted. However, it was your only chance to possibly trigger Yoongi's gem, whichever one it was, so you had no other choice.

"You seem troubled," You said as you crossed your arms, still staring at the number nine on Yoongi's back.

There was a moment of silence, then Yoongi turned around, his eyes piercing into yours. You didn't know that a person could have so much anger in his eyes. What did you ever do to him? "You're still here?"

Your eyes twitched, your anger nearly reaching the maximum. Your teeth gritted as your hands balled into fists. "Look, Yoongi, I'm trying to be nice here. Appreciate that, would you?"

Yoongi fell into silence once again, now fully facing you, one hand clutching his skateboard and the other in his jeans' pocket. He still had a scowl on his face but his expression was much softer than it was a few moments ago.

You didn't know why but you felt sympathetic towards Yoongi, even though he was a complete stranger. You had first hand experience, so you knew that he was masking his sadness with toughness and anger.

Well, you weren't sure, but it's what you thought. After all, everyone had a reason behind their actions. For all you know, he could just really be an asshole.

"...I'm not from here," Yoongi finally spoke up, his voice soft, and his eyes fixated to the ground. "I'm not from anywhere, actually."

Just like me.

"I made some friends on the way here. Well, I thought they were, until they left me with you. Heck, I don't even think they noticed that I was gone. I've only spoken to them for what, ten minutes?"

As Yoongi laughed at himself for how pathetic he was, you connected everything in your head. Through this, you knew that your plan would work... and you hated it.

"You can stay at my place, if you want," Your words were full of determination and Yoongi raised an eyebrow at you. "It's not much but it works."

There was a long silence and you just hoped that Yoongi was weighing the circumstances of going with you or not. He crossed his arms again, his head tilted slightly, and gave you a small smirk. This made you raise an eyebrow at him.

"Why would I come to a stranger's house?," Yoongi chuckled and placed the skateboard back on the ground. "You might be an axe murderer, for all I know. I'm not risking it."

Yoongi started skating away, which made you curse under your breath. You couldn't let him get away, you couldn't.

You ran as fast as you could and jumped right in front of Yoongi, almost making him crash into you. Yoongi slid the skateboard slightly, brushing against the end of your toes, and stopped.

"Are you crazy?," Yoongi spat, obviously back to his angry-at-everything self. "Get out of the way."

"I'm trying to help you, Yoongi. Even strangers can be kind, you know."

"Tch, nobody has ever been kind to me. Why would a stranger be? Go away, I don't need your help," Yoongi pushed you hard, causing you to fall, and was gone in a flash, the sound of his skateboard echoing in the empty streets.

As soon as you got up, you screamed in frustration and kicked a nearby trash can. Yoongi was no longer in your line of sight and you had officially lost yet another wonder.

"Out of all the people, him?!," You screamed once again and stomped on the garbage that was spilled on the ground. "Aren't there any requirements for becoming a bearer? Like, you know, not being an asshole?"

"Sky, his great, great grandfather was chosen to become a bearer, not him. It was merely passed down to him as an heirloom," K said, not really answering your question, which made you frustrated.

"Well, that's just super," You threw your arms in the air and scanned around you. Now it was silent, no skateboards, nor cars, it was just you... and K. "I lost Yoongi too."

"Don't be too stressed about it, Sky," K said to reassure you. "I'm sure that Yoongi won't be leaving the city any time soon."

You sighed and rubbed your still red forehead, frustated by how the situation turned out. You had lost yet another wonder and it didn't help that he was a jerk. You decided to let it slide and search for someone else, since there was a chance another wonder could be in this city, well, that's what K told you.

However, there was one problem. Your watch was gone.

"W-What?," You searched all your pockets for the missing accessory, but failed to find it. You then dropped on the floor, scaling the ground like a hound, hoping that you just dropped your watch. "No, no, no. It can't be missing. It can't!"

"...Please don't tell me that you lost the watch, Sky," K said with an exasperated sigh, which was definitely not helpful at the moment.

"I didn't lose it, it went missing!," You hissed and contiued to search the ground. You were panicking because it was the only tool that could help you find the wonders. Without it, you would be a sitting duck.

Then, you realized something. When Yoongi crashed into, you were adjusting your watch, which meant that the strap was loose. You also realized that when Yoongi left, his other hand was in his pocket, like he was hiding something.

When everything finally made sense to you, you stomped on the trash once more and screamed out loud.

"Yoongi, you bastard!"

-

Meanwhile, Yoongi was still skating through the dark streets of the city. He knew that it was dangerous, especially because his only source of illumination was the moon, but he still pushed forward. There was a place he knew where he could at least rest for the night.

"I can't believe that I narrated part of my life story to a stranger," Yoongi mumbled as he pulled out the watch from his pocket. "Well at least I got this."

Whenever Yoongi ran out of money, he used theft as a last resort. Sure, it wasn't the best way to do it, but he needed to survive.

As soon as he saw your glowing watch on the floor, he knew that it was worth a good amount. So, while you were still on the ground, he swiftly snatched the watch and kept it in his pocket. He was amused by how you didn't even notice.

"Why does this keep glowing?," Yoongi said in confusion as he stared at the glowing quartz. This made him think that it was some kind of luxurious watch. "The strap looks like it has some stones on it so it will definitely be worth a few thousand bucks."

Yoongi threw his arms in the air, knowing that he had hit a jackpot, and he could finally settle down properly in the city. As he did, he heard a jingle, and glanced at his bracelet.

Honestly, Yoongi sometimes considered the decision of pawning his bracelet, but he held himself back. Sure, he hated his parents -- I mean, that was why he ran away -- but he couldn't help but treat it like his only memory of home.

"Take care of this bracelet, Yoongi," His mother had told him when he was much younger. "Don't let it out of your sight. This may save your life one day."

"It's just a bracelet." That was what Yoongi said every time he remembered his mother's words.

Yoongi stopped when he realized that he was already at his destination. An abandoned apartment, far away from all the tall buildings, was his temporary home.

He climbed up the window and threw his skateboard inside. He coughed a bit at the dust, even though he was used to it, and pushed open the bedroom door.

The bed creaked as Yoongi sat on it. He tried his best to be comfortable on the broken spring mattress and stared at his bracelet.

For some reason, there were times when he could see something swirling inside the gem, like something was locked in it. Of course, he thought, it was just his imagination.

With that, Yoongi decided. He was going to pawn both the watch and his bracelet.

"It will help me move on from my family," Yoongi mumbled to himself as he closed his eyes. He knew that he had failed to convince himself.

However, Yoongi was unaware that someone had been watching him this whole time.

-

"Master, I have found one of the wonders."

"Good, good. Bring me the gem."

"And the bearer, your highness?"

"...Kill him."
