24. Air
"So, what's the plan?," Jimin crackled his knuckles, which were now covered with black gloves to protect his skin from getting blistered, directly quoted from and courtesy of Jin.
You stared at Hoseok as his eyes twitched, chuckling a bit because of his expression. He stood up, forming a circle with the rest, and you realized that there were six wonders around you, nearly complete, only missing Taehyung... Taehyung. You wondered where he was, after all you only needed him to complete the seven wonders. There was no time that you could afford to waste. "A plan? Are you telling me that y'all waltzed in to save my girlfriend without a decent plan?!"
"Calm down, Hoseok," Jungkook flapped his wing instead of waving a hand, crossing both of his arms over his chest. He puffed out a breath, blowing some strands of his blonde hair away from his face. "Our team is good at forming plans on the spot. Right, guys?"
There was a long silence, ironically disproving Jungkook's statement, before Namjoon finally spoke with a hum, which sounded like he just came up with a very plausible idea, and stood up straight while stretching his arms. "Yeah... yeah I have one."
"Took you a while," Yoongi mumbled, playing with a small flame on his fingers, which flickered as it transferred from one to the other. You stared at him, smiling when he returned the eye contact and smirked back. Staring at his milky white face, you blushed a bit when you remembered the day he confessed, ghosting your fingertips over your lips. You weren't sure what the two of you were right now but still, you knew, you knew that you thought of Yoongi as someone more than just one of the seven wonders.
"Sky...," K whispered and you shivered at how her voice sounded so close to your ear. She sounded sad, as if she knew something... horrible. "Are you really sure about your feelings towards Yoongi?"
"Well—," Frowning because of K's endless doubt, you were cut off by an ear-piercing scream from Jia. She was still in the car, tangled by her seatbelt, preventing her from escaping. The giant purple ogre was now shaking the car, trying to get the poor girl out to eat her, you assumed.
Hoseok looked as if he was going to faint at the sight. Still, he called out Jia's name and stupidly ran towards the ogre, being stopped ultimately by a strong grip from Namjoon. You heard him mutter a my arm will break, let go softly but you weren't sure if that was what he really said.
Namjoon coughed, tightening his grip on Hoseok (who was complaining about the pain), and made a gesture for everyone to huddle around him. Once all nine of them were in a semi-proper circle, he proceeded to explain the details of the plan. "Jin and Emily, the two of you stay with Hoseok and make sure that he doesn't come running towards Jia — unless he unlocks his powers, which will be a big help. Yoongi, Sky, you two will keep the civilians away from the ogre, we don't want any innocent bystanders to get harmed during the fight. Make sure to keep them as far away as possible. Jungkook, stay high in the air, keep the ogre's eyes up, you and I will distract it while Jimin gets Jia out of the car. That's our first priority before we can exterminate it. Oh, and Jimin—"
Everyone turned towards Jimin, who blinked his yellow eyes, some of his hair standing slightly due to the electricity surging through his limbs. He pushed up his glasses and gulped, obviously nervous because Namjoon was definitely going to give him a big role, even you knew that. "Yeah?"
A devious smirk spread across Namjoon's face, making Jimin break into cold sweat. You glanced at him and smiled, knowing that the earth gem bearer definitely came up with a good plan. "Make sure to stick with me after getting Jia to safety. We'll be giving the ogre a big and shocking fall."
"Wait," Hoseok called everyone's attention. He was wiping his cracked glasses with his shirt, a baffled expression evident on his face. "What powers?"
A silence. "We'll explain later."
-
As soon as Namjoon gave the cue, Jungkook sprung in the air and spread his wings and thankfully, he didn't tear his shirt off this time. Jimin watched in awe as he flew in the air, nearly disappearing into the sky and merely becoming a speck of dust in his point of view. Yoongi, flames coating his arms, ran out of view with you, while both Jin and Emily dragged a stunned Hoseok to the side, leaving him standing next to Namjoon awkwardly.
"Uhm," Jimin bit the inside of his cheek and rocked back and forth on his heels. He was a bit insecure about how Namjoon, who was staring at the ogre with extreme focus, was towering over him. "What did you mean by shocking fall?"
Namjoon faced Jimin with a small smile. His eyes turned into a deep chocolate brown color as his gem became brighter, taking a step forward, making Jimin flinch at how he cracked the cemented road with a single step. Well damn, super strength must have come with his ability to control rock and soil. "Have you seen The Empire Strikes Back?"
Jimin raised an eyebrow, thinking that this really wasn't the time for Star Wars small talk, especially because Jia's life was in danger as of this very moment. "Yeah... why?"
"Do you remember the part with the walking robots? When they used wires to tie their legs together and trip them?," Namjoon stomped his foot, completely cracking the road, digging his fingers into the cracks and pulling out a rock, which was thrice as big as his head. Jimin could tell that it weighed tons but Namjoon didn't flinch at all. "We'll be doing that, except there will be a little bit of electricity added into the mix."
Jimin was silent as he watched Namjoon shift the giant rock to one hand, raising the other, as the floor started to shake, nearly knocking everyone off their feet. Even the ogre wobbled a bit due to the force. Pieces of the road started to rise, forming a perfect staircase for Jimin, which led up to the car Jia was in. On the opposite side, huge rocks floated in the air, just high enough for Namjoon to jump on them. "You're smart."
"Thanks," Namjoon jumped, landing on the nearest floating rock, still carrying the huge boulder on his other hand. "Now go save the girl."
Jimin nodded and ran up the stairs as Namjoon continued to jump from rock to rock and threw the one in his hand, hitting the ogre right at the face. He wiggled his fingers as he summoned a ball of electricity on his palm, bracing himself if ever he would need to attack.
The ogre swung a hand towards Namjoon, who jumped to dodge it but unfortunately, there was no floating rock near enough to land on and the one he was standing on was shattered by the giant hand. Thankfully, Jungkook saw the incident, and instantly dove in and grabbed Namjoon's arm before he could fall, setting him down safely.
"Thanks, kid."
Jungkook nodded and flew upwards, his eyes flashing light blue whilst he shot out a beam of light from his palm, aiming at the ogre's eyes to distract it. Sadly, this caused the ogre to flail around — making poor Jia shake even more, her screams getting higher in pitch.
"Jungkook, don't distract it too much! Jia might get killed before I can even get to her!," Jimin ducked when a piece of rock flew just above his head. "Namjoon!"
"Sorry!," Namjoon screamed and flung one of the floating rocks towards the ogre but Jimin couldn't see how it reacted since he continued to run towards Hoseok's car.
From Jimin's view high up, he could see Yoongi shooting out pillars of flames while running, slowly forming a circle of fire around the ogre, which was taking too long because of how big the thing was. You were tailing behind the fire bearer, screaming at the crowd to move back while swinging your katana around. Jimin didn't think it was the best way to do it but at least it was working.
Jimin halted, bending down on one knee while taking deep breaths, when he saw someone waving at him from the ground through the corner of his eye. After much searching he finally found Hoseok, who was standing in between Jin and Emily, flailing his arms around.
"Hurt my girlfriend in any way and I'll kill you!," Hoseok cupped his hands next to his mouth to make his voice louder.
Jimin chuckled and ran a hand through his orange hair, smirking at the remark. "Sure thing—"
A loud smash cut Jimin off so he turned around, just in time to see the ogre destroying the rock staircase with its hand — the one holding Hoseok's car, which Jia was trapped inside of. His stomach flipped due to the sudden loss of balance and he found himself falling, the rock beneath his feet completely shattering.
Jungkook screamed Jimin's name but was too far away to help him. Everyone held their breaths at the sight of Jimin falling and he himself didn't know what to think. His mind was a blank slate, only reviving when he felt someone grab his hand.
With tears streaming down her face, Jia desperately held onto Jimin, doing her to best to pull him up despite her current dilemma. She had opened the door on her side just in time to see Jimin falling, grabbing him instantly. "A-Are you okay?"
Jimin gulped. He didn't need to look down to know how high up he currently was. He pulled himself up, stepping on the open car door, and sat next to Jia, leaning on the head rest of the leather seat and laughing out loud. "How ironic, since I came to save you. Thanks, by the way."
"Just get us out before we both die in here!," Jia fiddled with her faulty seatbelt, making Jimin flick his eyes towards it immediately. Glancing at his clawed hand, he merely swiped at it, cutting it into half. "What the—"
"Procrastinate about your disbelief later, Hoseok is waiting for you on the ground," Jimin turned around and kneeled, pressing his palms on the seat. The car was still shaking because the ogre was moving around and it wasn't bad enough to make them lose balance. "Get on. We're going to have to jump."
Jia was hesitant but he followed his orders, Jimin securing his grip on her legs. Hoseok will kill him if he sees their current position. She was skinny so he wasn't surprised by how lightweight she was, almost as if a feather was resting on his back. "Who are you all, including the others brawling down there? Why... why do you have powers?"
Jimin assumed that Jia noticed his palms, which were sparkling with electricity, but he still prevented himself from shocking her. He had the urge to deliver a long of him being the great Park Jimin but decided not to. Taking a few steps forward, his mind froze at the great height they were both in. "Like I said, ask the questions later. Hoseok, he has powers too, just doesn't know it yet. Both you and him will find out eventually. For now, let's get you to safety. Jungkook!"
A few seconds passed before Jungkook came into view under the car, flapping his wings and studying the scene. Jimin heard Jia gasp behind him, shocked at the sight of the angel, and he could just imagine how she was trying to absorb everything. The giant purple ogre, her boyfriend having powers, a winged man — even for Jimin, that was way too much to handle.
"That was quick," Jungkook glanced behind him and spotted Namjoon distracting the ogre with giant boulders before slowly flying upwards. "Sorry that I couldn't help you out a while ago, Jimin. I was too far away—"
Jimin's eyes widened when the ogre suddenly grabbed Jungkook, squeezing him in his hand, and he would have complained about Jia screaming in his ear if the situation wasn't so serious.
"Jungkook!," Jimin heard Namjoon shout out of his view. Jungkook wiggled in the ogre's grip like a worm but his wings and limbs were all pinned, so there was no way that he could get out. Jimin just silently prayed the ogre wouldn't tighten its hold, to the point that it would crush every single bone in Jungkook's body. "Fuck, hold on, we'll get you in a jiffy!"
"Save Jia first!," Jungkook seethed through gritted teeth and continued to wiggle. The ogre tilted its head as it stared at the angel and Jimin shivered at how it looked like it was studying its meal.
"H-How are we going to get down? Isn't Jungkook our ride to the ground?," Jia stuttered, trembling on Jimin's back. Obviously, she was terrified beyond belief.
"No. There's another way," Come on, Park Jimin, think. Jimin groaned whilst he looked around, trying the perfect combination, a path to safety. He scanned the area, skimming through Yoongi's flames, struggling Jungkook and Namjoon's floating boulders. Bingo. "We're still going to end up jumping. Jia, do you trust me on this?"
Jia gulped loudly, her grip around Jimin's waist tightening. "If Hoseok trusts you, then I trust you too."
Jimin smiled, touched by how Hoseok and Jia trusted each other so much, not even faltering when their lives were at stake. He somehow he wished he was in that kind of relationship too but he wasn't a man who believed in true love. Maybe, in the future, he could meet his special someone.
Clearing his throat, Jimin peaked out the car door and screamed out. "Namjoon! Get some boulders under us!"
Although Jimin was unsure if Namjoon heard him, he saw some rocks shift under him, close enough for him to land on them. He looked over his shoulder, gesturing at Jia to brace herself, the latter nodding with a mixture of determination and fear.
However, before Jimin could jump, the ogre tilted the car rapidly, both he and Jia falling out suddenly. Jimin groaned when his ass hit the boulder (he was sure that his right butt cheek was going to be bruised) then paused when he realized that Jia wasn't with him.
"Jia?! Where are you?!," Jimin crawled to the edge of the boulder to find Jia, freezing when he found her falling, not being able to grab onto anything. Panic suddenly started to fill him. "Oh my God — someone get Jia!"
Knowing that Jungkook was the one and only person who could save Jia in this moment, everyone faced him, but he was still being held captive by the ogre. He screamed in frustration as he desperately tried to wiggle free, failing completely. "I can't! I'm still stuck!"
Oh no.
-
Hoseok blinked. He had to do a double take at the current situation at hand. Besides the strange fact that the people around him not so long ago were either controlling the elements or flying, both Jin and Emily had explained everything to him — from Earth in danger of being annihilated by Vrede to the powers locked within the gem of his charm bracelet. Taking glance at it, he couldn't believe that the gem he received from his mother was actually a vessel of power, even with everything that was already happening around him. He also asked if Jia possibly had powers too but Emily declined, saying that she wasn't a wonder.
Staring at Yoongi and his flames, Hoseok still tried to process the reality of it all. People with supernatural abilities, a whole other plant filled with living beings... He thought it was impossible, really, but here he was, standing next to man who could control water and a girl armed with an electric bow.
"You're taking this all in a lot better than I expected," Jin chuckled, playing with a sphere of water, which was floating above his palm. "You seem calm, especially with a giant ogre inches away from you and having your girlfriend's life in danger."
Jia. Merely nodding at Jin's remark due to the shock and confusion, Hoseok looked upwards, trying to find his car in the ogre's hands. He frowned when he noticed that Jungkook wasn't flying in the sky, out of his view, and scratched his cheek in confusion when he saw Jimin on a floating boulder, screaming with his arms stretched out.
Hoseok's brain froze, his mouth running dry, when he saw a long-haired figure falling from the sky, a figure who looked eerily similar to Jia.
"Is that—," Emily attempted to speak but was silenced by Jin.
It's my girlfriend. My damn girlfriend is falling to her death. Hoseok wanted to scream, really, to say that the people who should be helping aren't helping at all, but instead he ran towards Jia, blocking out all noises around him. Both Jin and Emily tried to stop him but he shook them off, determined to save his girlfriend.
"Everything is going to fine," Hoseok let his tears fall, sobbing at the thought of Jia dying. He wish he could fly, like Jungkook, and save her. Anything to save her. "Everything... will be fine."
As Hoseok ran towards the ogre, he could hear Jia's voice ringing in his head. Save me, Hoseok.
"You saved me, you know," Jia mumbled, taking a bite of her strawberry shortcake while staring out the window of the cafe and at the people passing by, the province of Gwangju as quiet and as peaceful as ever.
Hoseok nearly choked on his iced tea, eyes widening at Jia's remark, since she had shattered the long and awkward silence that had been present. He was exceptionally nervous during their first date, which was obvious by the amount of sweat he was perspiring, combined with the way his hands trembled every time he lifted the glass. "W-What do you mean?"
"I've always doubted myself. Didn't have the confidence, you know," Jia placed her fork back on the empty plate, leaning on the headrest of her seat and sighing loudly. Hoseok realized that he didn't even touch his cheesecake and started to eat slowly. "I always thought I was the ugliest in class, the least talented, the most useless—"
"But you aren't," Hoseok's cheeks reddened in an instant when he caught Jia's stare. He turned away, almost knocking down his plate of cheesecake. "I mean, you're beautiful, an amazing make-up artist, you're so kind, so... I can't even find the right words to describe you."
There was a moment of silence and Hoseok face palmed mentally, thinking that he just screwed up his first date with Jia big time. Based on her reaction, he was sure that he had just missed his one and only chance in romance. This girl's beauty was out of this world and a geeky college student like him wasn't deserving of her.
But before Hoseok could deliver a long speech of apology, he felt a soft pair of his lips on his own. Due to the shock, it took him a while to respond but he eventually did, cupping Jia's cheeks in his hands.
When he pulled away, he was greeted by Jia's smile, her eyes sparkling with delight and love. Love. "And that's exactly how you saved me, Hobi."
"Then I'll keep saving you," Hoseok didn't know what exactly had gotten into him but he spoke the absolute truth while gently holding Jia's hand and kissing it. "No matter what."
Hoseok was going to save Jia. He hadn't figured it out yet and it didn't matter how, he was going to do it. Since he was blindly running towards Jia's falling figure, he didn't notice how the ogre threw the car towards him, a sly smile growing on the monster's face.
"Hoseok, no!," Only your scream brought Hoseok back to his senses and everything went in slow motion when he turned around, seeing his own wrecked car slowly coming towards him. His feet were glued to the ground, the ridiculousness of it all making his fists clench. He couldn't afford to die. If he did, Jia would die too.
Glancing at the flickering grey gem of his charm bracelet, Hoseok wished that if he really did have powers sealed away in his heirloom, he would get them by now. He closed his eyes, just hoping that something would happen, determined to save Jia, even he had to sacrifice himself.
Everything is going to be fine. Because Hoseok unlocked his gem, everything was definitely going to be fine.
Hoseok opened his eyes after he felt a gust of wind blow all around him. He looked at his hands, which were now claws, and stared at his green gem. As his eyes slowly turned the same color, the wind around him strengthening, a letter started to appear on the gem's core. Air.
Blinking rapidly, Hoseok held down his shirt because the wind nearly blew it off him. After processing the fact that he really did have the ability to control air, he remembered that his car was still flung towards him.
Hoseok gritted his pointed teeth and raised a fist, the wind around his hand materializing and turning into a blade. He swung his hand, splitting the car in half and making both he and Jia's luggage spill out.
"Yes!," Hoseok turned around with a raised eyebrow when he saw you jumping in joy, next to Yoongi who was still shooting out flames.
As Yoongi pulled you back to his path, it was as if Hoseok was struck by lightning. Jia was still falling.
With his newfound powers, Hoseok jumped and landed on one of the floating boulders in the air. He wobbled a bit, nearly losing his balance, and he was surprised by how his abilities had enhanced in such a short amount of time, and now he was like a superhuman.
Hoseok, you idiot! Don't just stand there! Save Jia!
Hoseok scanned the area and measured the distance from where he was standing to the ground, also approximately timing how long it would take until Jia would be in his view. Twenty seconds. Twenty seconds until Jia is near enough for him to catch. No boulders near enough, the chances of landing safely with Jia was minute, but with this kind of ability, he'll never know. The only option: fly, if he could. "I'm coming to get you, Jia! Everything is going to be fine!"
Bending down in a running stance, Hoseok took deep breaths and braced himself. Ten seconds. He didn't know what was going to happen, honestly, but he never knew if he didn't try. Jungkook was trapped, so he couldn't help. Based on his observations, the other members can't fly. He thought that he himself was stupid for relying on flight but— Five seconds.
Hoseok screamed when he jumped and his blood ran cold when he realized he wasn't definitely going to land on any boulders, they were too far away. Still, the sound of Jia's screams nearing gave him hope and he smiled when she landed perfectly in his arms.
"Hey," Hoseok wiggled his eyebrows at Jia, who was covering her face with both hands and trembling out of fright. "Calm down, Jia, it's me."
Jia slowly uncovered her face, eyes widening when she saw Hoseok's emerald green eyes. She attempted to look down but stopped herself when she realized that she might fall. "I— How— You're flying?"
What?
Hoseok looked down, gasping a bit when he saw that he wasn't necessarily flying — he was floating on air. The gust of wind was blowing strong as ever, supporting him as he was lifted like a feather. He had to blink to process what exactly was going on. He moved his legs around, expecting to fall, but instead he did a forward roll that made Jia shriek.
"So it's true...," Hoseok whispered as he slowly lowered himself, his feet gracefully tapping the ground. The ogre behind him roared, its screams echoing, and he could hear the footsteps of the panicking civilians. Still, he couldn't believe that it was all real, and that his mother's gem really did contain powers. He glanced at Jia, who was all smiles, which was strange since she nearly died. "You seem happy after nearly losing your life and having a boyfriend with supernatural abilities."
Jia nearly tripped on her own two feet when she stepped down from Hoseok's arms. Due to her joy of finally being on the ground, he pulled Hoseok by the collar and gave him a big fat kiss on the lips. "I'm not bothered by your powers at all. Why would I be? You're still the same Hobi that I fell in love with three years ago. Still, you didn't have to go through that and unlocking your powers just to save me."
Hoseok stared at his hand and watched as a small of orb of air flew in between his fingers. Shifting his green eyes towards Jia, he gave out a toothy smile and ruffled her hair. "I promised you, didn't I? I'll always save you, no matter what."
Jia's eyes welled up with tears and she leaned in to kiss Hoseok again but was cut-off by a frustrated scream from Jungkook, who was still trapped in the ogre's fist. "Uh, I know you guys are happy that the last wonder unlocked his powers and that Jia is safe but I'm still ogre breakfast over here!"
Hoseok flinched at how loud Jungkook's voice was despite how high up he was currently located. As Jia gave him a tight hug, he glanced around the area and saw Jin giving some kind of look with both his fingers pointed at him. Huh? Due to that, Emily was staring at Jin with a lot of judgement.
There was crash, both Hoseok and Jia jumping in their skin, so the two turned around and saw Namjoon squatting down, a small crater beneath his feet.
Hoseok mentally weighed the possibility of a scrawny purple-haired man to have super-strength whilst Namjoon stood up and crackled his knuckles, smirking to reveal his pointed teeth. "New plan! Everyone gather around!"
Yoongi, who had just completed the circle of fire around the ogre, was the first one who came to view, panting and holding his knees as soon as he stopped running. The moment he stopped, you rubbed his back to comfort him. "Did you really make me run here after I ran like, I don't know, ten laps?!"
"I ran with you too!," Your argument remained unnoticed.
Jimin jumped from boulder to boulder until he was on the ground. Jin and Emily ran. As soon as the rest — with the exception of Jungkook — came together, Namjoon made a gesture to tell everyone to move closer. Hoseok adjusted his position, his shoulder brushing against Yoongi's, Jia still clinging onto him.
Namjoon raised a finger and pointed at Hoseok with a proud smile. "Seeing that Hoseok here has his powers now, we have to make a few adjustments. This time, we have to free Jungkook then get rid of this huge ogre. Jimin and Hoseok, you two will be the core of this strategy."
Hoseok glanced at Jimin, staring at his golden yellow eyes, before nodding.
"Jimin, you can control electricity, taking into account how thunder is also a form of electricity made by natural proportions, I want you to produce some lightning."
Jimin tilted his head, thick lips forming into a pout. "Me? Controlling the weather? Is it possible?"
"It is," Everyone faced Jia, who blushed slightly at the many pairs of eyes staring at her. "You can summon lightning, it's the same as summoning electricity. Although, you'll need to be high up in the sky, way up above the clouds."
"And we're going to need Jungkook for that," Jin's voice was dripping with realization, eyes wide and mouth slightly ajar.
"Exactly," Namjoon licked his lips before resuming his speech. "Hoseok, I noticed that you can fly. Your job is to get Jungkook. After that, whip up a tornado. A big one."
Hoseok nodded, not questioning Namjoon's request because he knew that it was possible for him to create one. A bit of heat and some water, added with the force of pressure from his own wind — it was the perfect formula. "Sure. I'll be needing assistance from Yoongi and Jin, you know for the heat and the water."
"Leave it to us," Yoongi would raise a thumb, if he wasn't so damn tired.
"Sky, Yoongi, Jimin and Jin will stay on the ground in case the ogre tries to do anything low. I'll help Hoseok rescue Jungkook," Namjoon faced Jia after inhaling a copious amount of air. "Jia, I think it will be best for you to stay behind with Emily."
"Of course, I understand," Jia smiled and Hoseok rubbed her shoulder, silently assuring her that he was going to be okay. Everything is going to be fine.
Namjoon stood up straight, stretching his arms and releasing a loud grunt. Afterwards, he stomped on the ground (nearly giving Hoseok heart attack because of how sudden and uncalled for it was) and clawed out a giant boulder from the ground, lifting it up with three fingers as if it was nothing. "Well then, team. Let's go."
