"What the heck is that?!," You said with a screech and pointed at the thing, no, at the monster that you could see through the hole in the roof.
The monster looked like a dragon, except that it had the wings of a dragonfly and the legs of an ant. It didn't have any eyes but it had a helmet-like face, thick smoke coming out of its nostrils. It's teeth were long and pointed, like that of a sabertooth's, and you didn't even want to know why there was fresh blood dripping from its mouth.
"Stop screaming. You're way too loud," He said with a click of a tongue before pulling you up from the ground and standing in front of you. As he tightly held your arms, you noticed that his nails were as black as his eyes. You frowned, wondering if guys really did wear nail polish too. "You'll attract it if you make too much noise."
"What exactly is it?," You whispered as both you and him slowly walked backwards. The monster was snaking it's big head through the hole and was... sniffing. You didn't need to think twice to know that it was trying to pick up your scent.
"Ignis," You knew that it was some kind of Latin term but you didn't know what it meant. He caught your confused expression and scowled, which made you frown. "It means fire in Latin. There are many types of these monsters but this in particular is a combination of every single species that I've encountered. Obviously, this thing breaths fire.... but it isn't regular fire."
You were about to question him then you remembered he had tried to kill you just a few minutes. He stared at you with a stunned expression as you pushed him away.
"Why am I listening to you? You tried to kill me! Whatever, I'm out!," You sprinted away, jumping over all the rubble, and tried to fins your way out of the buulding. You knew that the main had a bomb shelter on the bottom floor so you were headed towards there. "Bye, Felicia!"
"Damn it, Sky!," He looked at the monster who had your footsteps and was crawling on the roof. Now, he was regretting his actions. One of the things he hated about himself was that he acted on impulse, without thinking through first. "Come back here, you idiot!"
You ignored his words and continued running, taking no importance of the crackling sounds from the ceiling and the ashes that were falling on your head. He kept screaming your name behind you but it serves as a motivation for you to run faster.
All you needed to do was reach the bomb shelter. You believed that you would be safe after finding—
You screamed when a tornado of fire suddenly crashed from the ceiling and into the ground, almost burning the tip of your nose. However, you weren't able to brake your run and fell into the newly formed crater.
Thanks to your instincts, you were able to grab the edge of the ground before falling inside completely. You felt something fall out of your pocket, your cellphone, and watched in horror as it burned in a swirl of flames at the very bottom of the pit. You then looked up and saw the Ignis staring back at you, it's teeth formed into permanent smile, making it look like it was expecting you to fall into your death.
"Sky!," You heard him call your name and sighed in relief, then you spared a glance at the Ignis, which still wasn't moving. He kneeled down the near the edge and stared at you with a frown. You noticed that his eyes weren't as dark as they were before and there was a slight glow from them. "You're so stubborn. I told you to stay with me, didn't I?"
"Whatever, just pull me up!," Your fingers were starting to slip and you swung your legs, desperately trying to hold on.
He rolled his eyes before he stuck his arm out for you to grab. However, before he could reach you, the Ignis suddenly released a tornado of fire from its mouth, separating the two of you and burning your fingers in the process. This forced you to let go and fall, literally, into your doom.
Everything went in slow motion as you fell. You thought, no, you knew that you were going to die. You started regret the way you lived your seventeen years of life and wanted to do more stuff. You remembered Emily, and wished that she would a life that was even more fruitful and amazing as yours.
You closed your eyes when you started to feel the heat behind your head. You braced yourself, expecting to be swallowed by the flames and feel immense pain of burning but nothing happened. Slowly and carefully, you opened your eyes. You gasped.
There was purple mist wrapped around your waist like a hand, which caught your fall. It was strange because you couldn't feel any pressure from it and it was like you were floating on air. You flinched when you heard the crackling of flames right beneath you.
You were even more shocked when you followed the trail of mist. It was coming from his hands. He was in the same position he was in earlier, one hand covered in mist and the other above him, creating a dark purple forcefield to shield himself from the Ignis' fire breath.
His hood was blown by the wind, exposing his unexpectedly handsome face to you. His shades had long been gone, since they had fallen into the pit of fire just a few moments ago.
Then, you saw his eyes. They were no longer black... They were purple.
"Don't panic," He said slowly, his eyes glowing even more, and the mist wrapping around you like a snake. "I'll get you out of there. Just... don't move."
You were really too stunned to say anything. As you were slowly lifted up, a forcefield was made around you too and you assumed that it was to protect you from the fire.
A small, glowing round object caught your eye in those moments of levitation. He had a purple ring resting on the ring finger of his right hand, which was surrounded by mist. It was glowing, equivalent to how much his eyes were, and there was a letter engraved in it. You couldn't read it, since it was a foreign language to you.
In a matter of moments, you were safely back on the ground, sitting behind him, who was still creating a forcefield.
"You believe me now, right?," He looked over his shoulder and glanced at you, a small smirk on his face. Now you were able to confirm that his eyes were glowing as much as his ring was. In the few moments of silence, the Ignis roared, making you feel like you were in a movie. "Listen to me, Sky. I'll take care of the Ignis. You have to run. Now."
"I am not leaving the orphanage!," You flinched as the scaffolding of the ceiling behind you collapsed, scattering dust everywhere. "I have to look for the children!"
"The children?," He cackled, making a chill run down your spine because he sounded... evil. "The destiny of this orphanage and it's children was decided as soon as the Ignis attacked. While I was saving your ass down there, the Ignis was burning everything. I doubt that there are any survivors."
"What makes you think that?," You stood up, catching the attention of the Ignis, making it release more flames. He glared at you, obviously started to become tired because of how big his forcefield was. "I believe... that at least someone is alive in here! And the bomb shelter! All the kids are in there! With your... abilities, we can protect them, right?"
He just chuckled at your long speech, which slightly annoyed you because every word you said was heartfelt. "You humans and your tendency to believe even in dire situations like this. It's amusing, really."
Your eyes widened upon hearing his statement. You slowly walked backwards and fell on the ground, blocking out all the noises around you. The purple mist was starting to wrap around the Ignis too.
Everything was just too much to take in. First of all, there was this Ignis monster that was burning down the orphanage — your home — and everyone else is possibly dead. Then, the new kid had magical powers and was... not human. Lastly, you were caught up in the middle of all this chaos.
"What? After all this, you still think I'm normal?," He laughed after catching your surprised — and terrified — expression. You then noticed that his teeth seemed to have sharper canine fangs then a regular person had. "I'm only half-human. The other half? Well—"
"Watch out!"
While he was talking, the Ignis' had snuck up at the side. Now, it was shooting out long spiked tentacles. As soon as you warned him, purple mist wrapped around them and solified, turning into purple energy rings, stopping the tentacles and forcing them into place. You were breathing heavily, especially because one of the tentacles was inches from your face.
You turned after hearing his ragged breaths, your eyes widening after seeing the blood flowing down the corner of his mouth. "H-Hey, are you okay?!"
"I'm fine," He said with a slight smile, looking tired as hell. You understood that, because he was currently making a forcefield, pinning down the Ignis and stopping its tentacles from skewering the both of you like barbequed pork. "This usually happens when I overuse my powers."
You wanted to help him, you really did, but you were one hundred percent human and didn't have any magical powers. The only thing different about you was your silver hair.
"You said something about a bomb shelter, didn't you?," You nodded as he gritted his teeth and solified the mist around the Ignis as well, causing it to scream in pain. "Fine, if you do believe then look for a survivor. If you do find one, run to the bomb shelter. I'll take care of the Ignis."
You didn't question him, especially because his black nails were now long and sharp talons. You gulped and nodded, after you caught the determined expression on his face. "Be careful."
There was a moment of silence before he replied: "Just go."
As you ran, he released the Ignis' tentacles, barely dodging one, which scratched his left cheek. He clicked his tongue as he jumped and dodged some more tentacles which came from under him. He cleanly landed on the thickest tentacle and started running on it.
The Ignis roared and breathed out fire but he used his forcefields to deflect the flames, aiming them towards the already burning dormitory.
With a swift flip, he landed on the Ingis' nape. He was still pinning it to the ground, so it couldn't run or fly. However, there was one problem, he didn't know its weakness.
Meanwhile, you were running around the burning building, coughing because of the thick smoke from the flames, in hopes of finding someone alive. You already found a few people, but if they weren't a corpse, they would be a burning one.
You aleady ran out of tears when you cried because of Emily this morning, so seeing a ton of dead bodies didn't affect you as much as it was supposed to. Sure, you felt sad, but not to point of bursting into tears.
When the end of the hallway was in your line of sight, you fell on your knees, ignoring the flames that were surrounding you. You were already starting to lose hope and was willing to accept the fact that everyone was dead.
Then, as if on cue, you heard it. A child's cry.
The Ignis was starting to break through his binds but he still couldn't figure out what the monster's weakness was. He's been riding on it a horse for the past few mimutes, trying to analyze its features to hopefully find its weak spot.
Logic stated that a hybrid would inherit the weak points of whatever was in its mixture, but in this case, it was different. He already tried tearing off his wings or slicing its nape but it didn't even faze the Ignis. The worst part was that every now and then, its tentacles would attack him, which was strange because it was blind.
"Blind...," He mumbled as he swung under the Ignis' legs with one of its tentacles. He then glanced at the monster's head and smirked, an idea forming in his head. "Got you."
The cries were coming from a burning room, the door being locked, its handle smoking hot because of the flames. You stared at your fingers, which were burnt before you fell in the pit earlier, and gritted your teeth.
You screamed as you opened the door, burning your palm in the process. The first thing you saw in the room was little girl with blonde hair, cowering in the corner of the room, surrounded by dead children.
You immediately made your way to her, avoiding the burning furniture and dead bodies. "Hey now, you'll be okay. I'll get you out."
The little girl wailed, tears flowing down your little face. Her small white dress was staines with burned marks and blood, making you flinch. "S-Something's crawling on my back."
You frowned, wondering why that was the first thing the little girl said after finally seeing someone alive. Still, you thought that it wasn't a big deal, and maybe it was the reason why she leaning on the wall. "Let me see."
"What the...?," He said as he sat on top of the Ignis' head, staring at the hole just a few inches from where he was. It was similar to a whale's blowhole, but it was bigger, as if something would come out if it.
Although seeing it made him nauseous, he stepped over it made his way to the Ignis' face. After swinging under it, he discovered that it was wearing some kind of bone mask to cover its eyes. That only meant one thing, its eyes were its weak point.
While dodging the tentacles, he slid to the Ignis' nose and grabbed its eye mask, causing it to shriek and shoot out flames everywhere. He had let his nails grow into talons once again, the purple mist assisting him to tug off the mask.
Suddenly, there was a whoosh sound, like something had shot out into the air. Then, something landed on his face.
He lost his grip and fell on the ground, panicking at the giant bug that was crawling on his body. It was heading towards his back, giving him an idea of what this creature was. He rolled and took off his hoodie, his eyes widening at the giant cockroach like insect that he was staring at.
The thing pounced on him but he was able to trap it in a purple energy ball. He gritted his teeth as he put pressure in it, to the point of it exploding into a pile of guts and blood.
Knowing that these insects were probably all around the place, he suddenly remembered that you were inside the building... looking for survivors.
"Tch... Sky!"
You stared at the giant insect on the little girl's back, wondering what the heck it was and how you were supposed to get it off of her. You didn't want to touch it, that was a fact, especially because its legs were digging into its skin.
"P-Please get it off me," The little girl cried and you swore that the thing was moving.
"Uhm, I—"
"Don't touch it, Sky!"
You were tackled to the ground before your fingers could touch the insect. You saw a purple vortex fade away at the corner of your eye and noticed that he was, once again, on top of you.
"Where the hell did you come fro—"
"Sky, listen to me," He said while grabbing your shoulders and staring into your eyes, his purple irises burning into your soul. "That thing on the girl's back. It's an insect that can mutate any living creature into a monster much worse than an Ignis."
Your head was starting to spin because of what was going on and you couldn't really think straight. "Then we have to get it off of her!"
"We can't," He said with a straight face. "Touching it will mutate us too."
"N-No, we need to save her! We have to!"
"Sky, we can't!"
"Get off me!," You pushed him off and ran towards the girl, who started to squirm on the ground.
"Sky, no!"
Right before you could reach the little girl, there was yet another explosion, the impact so strong that everything in the room flew.
He managed to catch you with purple mist and make a forcefield around the two of you before you hit the ground. He stood in front of you as the debris bounced off the forcefield and the only thing you could do was scream.
Suddenly, there was a loud ringing in your ears, making you fall on your knees and clutch your head. You felt like someone was pounding your brain.
"Fire. Water. Earth. Air. Thunder. Light. Darkness. Find and gather them, for they are the seven wonders."
For a split second, you saw a vision of the woman in the hood, the same one in your dream, staring at back at you with the same purple eyes he had. Then, you felt light-headed. You fell on the ground, slowly losing consciousness.
"Sky!"
