Chapter 3: What are you doing here?

Katelyn

"Hey, girls!" I yelled from across the cafeteria. "Over here!"

Melissa and Vanessa walked over to my table. Sitting down, they put their trays down on the table.

After a couple of minutes of eating, Melissa spoke up.

"Hey, Kate?" She said.

"Mhmn?" I answered, my mouth full of food.

"Do you think I have powers?"

I choked on my food as I looked at her.

"Uh- How should I know?" I replied, coughing a bit before swallowing my food.

"Well, I could see that you made that flower turn to ice with a touch."

"Yeah, but that could just be because you were looking at me when I did it and V didn't."

She rolled her eyes at my response. "Just- Whatever. I'm gonna go and try anyway."

"Wanna test it out on the roof?" Vanessa asked us before I could respond about what a pointless idea that was.

"I guess."

"I guess."

Melissa and I said at the same time as we turned to look at each other before we burst out laughing. Vanessa rolled her eyes, mumbling under her breath about us acting like two year olds.

Vanessa and I sat on the edge of the roof, whilst Melissa closed her eyes and focused, putting her arms in front of her.

"You know, you look really stupid right now." I let out a laugh at Melissa's expression. "You look constipated."

"Shut up Kate."

We waited for a few minutes but nothing happened.

"If you wiggle your fingers, something might happen."
Vanessa grinned and I laughed at her comment.

Melissa just huffed at us.

"If this works Mel, you owe me food."

"Shush V. You're worse than Kate."

Despite her previous words, Melissa started to wiggle her fingers.

"Well that's a bit of a strech-"

Vanessa cut herself off as sparks of lightning came out the tips of Mel's fingers.

"Woah!" She yelped, "What in bloody hell was that?"

"Lightning."

"I know, you idiot, it was a rhetorical question."

"Wow." Vanessa said, in awe.

"See what I told you? She just didn't look at me before."

Melissa scoffed at me. "Well good job she didn't see you before otherwise I might not have known I have powers."

"True."

We both turned to Vanessa, who just looked back us, confused.

"What?"

"Well you've gotta try now. Who knows? You might have awesome powers too."

Vanessa sighed, shaking her head in disbelief.

"I highly doubt that."

"Yeah yeah whatever just do it."

I gently pushed Vanessa to the spot where Melissa was just standing before she sat down next to me.

"Okay V, just relax."

She closed her eyes, her previously tense shoulders relaxing as she took a deep breath.

"Now just wiggle your fingers or something."

Melissa and I let out a near silent cackle as Vanessa shot us a look.

"Okay okay, we'll shut up."

We grinned at each other as Vanessa shook her head, closing her eyes again.

She slowly started to curl her fingers into a loose fist before small bursts of fire emerged from fingertips.

My jaw dropped as I watched the forks of flame wrapped themselves around Vanessa's hand as she grinned at us.

"In my opinion, I think I've got the best power."

Melissa and I scoffed simultaneously, rolling our eyes as Vanessa's smirk grew.

"Hey Kate? Why didn't you react like that when I produced lighning?" Melissa whined, crossing her arms as she looked away from me.

"Because I don't like you."

"I-"

"Alright you two, shut up for once."  Vanessa groaned, massaging her temples.

Suddenly, the bell chimed and a voice rang out.

"Alright, kids, you can have the rest of today off! We are experiencing some issues. You can leave school now." The Principle screamed into the speakers.

"For fucks sake, why is she so loud?" I hissed, covering my ears to try and drown out the now ringing noise in my head.

"I know right? She has way too much fun trying to deafen us." Melissa mumbled before swearing under her breath.

"But did you hear what she said?"

We both shot Vanessa a look that screamed, 'What do you think?'

"Right, stupid question." Vanessa rolled her eyes, "Well I dunno about you lot but I'm going to get more food from town, feel free to join I guess."

"Didn't you just eat?-"

"Shut up."

I chuckled as Vanessa snapped at Melissa before she turned around and walked off at high speed.

"Wait for me! Kate, you coming?"

"Nah, I'll stay here for a bit longer."

"Um okay. I'll see ya later?"

I nodded, smiling at her.

Melissa shot me a weird look before speeding off after Vanessa, leaving me sitting on the side of the roof, admiring the beautiful blue sky.

I started to get lost in my thoughts. "Today's been a crazy day. I mean, we discovered that we all have powers all of a sudden, it has to mean something."

Looking down at my hands, I ran through many different possibilities in my head. "Why have they only just showed up now?"

Sighing, I stood up to strech after a few minutes of staring at my hands. 'But then again, it might be nothing, maybe I'm just overthinking too much.'

I turned around only to be face to face with a board chest.

"Why hello there." I mumbled quietly, startled.

I looked up to see if I could recognise the person I had bumped into.

"Nathan?" I rose an eyebrow.

He had a fearful look in his eyes.

"Hey, Katelyn?" He asked. There was no usual smirk on his face, he was generally scared about something.

"Yeah?" I replied, now feeling quite worried for him.

He never acts like this.

"I just got off the phone and-" He cut himself off as he choked back a sob, looking away from where I was standing in front of him.

What is going on?

I moved automatically, my arms wrapping around him as I pulled him into a tight hug.

"It's okay. You don't have to tell me anything." I looked back up at him with a gentle smile on my face.

I watched his face fall as he finally let the tears he was holding in roll down his face.

Gently, I pulled him back into a hug as he buried his head into the crook of my neck, letting out sobs that made my heart ache.

I softly stroked my hand through his hair, providing him with the comfort he seemed to desperately need at the moment.

"Just let it all out. I'm right here."
