Jungkook's Past
Jungkook whistled a series of notes while walking towards his building, all while twirling a set of keys around one of his finger.
He sighed after reaching the floor he lived on, and after unlocking the door to his apartment, he messily tossed his shoes to the side.
Kook took a huge breath and then exhaled deeply. "Home sweet home..." he muttered heavily.
His sarcastic words echoed throughout the dark, empty room and Kook couldn't help but be reminded about how this must have been what the room looked like when his mother was alone that night...
Almost immediately after those thoughts crossed however, he gritted his teeth painfully. "Don't go there again..." he berated harshly to himself and then rigidly headed towards his room.
His lips trembled because despite trying his best to do otherwise, all he could think about was that horrible day.
It had been years since his mother had been murdered and taken away from his, now dysfunctional, family and not a day went by where it didn't hurt for him.
Why did it have to be the one day she had been home alone?
It must be karma because now Kook himself was all alone and no matter how irrational it was, he blamed himself for what happened -always thinking about the what ifs.
Needless to say his life had irrevocably changed...
...and so did his father's.
His father ended up resorting to alcohol just to numb the pain his wife left him as she took his heart with her that night and even though Kook tried so hard to get him to stop, it was hopeless.
His father didn't want to be saved. He wanted to drown in his sorrows because that hurt less than excepting a reality without the love of his life. To this day his father was a mess...the last time Kook tried to visit him, he had almost been impaled by a broken beer bottle and he had never attempted to try again after that.
It was only recently that Kook accepted the fact that he had really lost both his parents because it wasn't only his mother who had died that day...it was just from different causes...
One from a bullet to the heart, and the other from a broken one.
Kook felt his phone buzz in his pocket but he ignored it and despondently shrugged his jacket off.
He felt his phone stop after a couple of seconds but only moments later it started buzzing again, making him scowl in annoyance.
He dug his hand in his pocket, roughly grabbing the annoying device and then briefly eyed the unknown number before answering.
"Who is this? I'm not in the mood fo-"
He paused when he heard the urgent voice of a person cutting him off on the other end and he listened quietly as she spoke.
Kook's heart skipped a beat and his eyes widened in disbelief. "W-what did you say??"
Without another word, he grabbed his jacket and keys and then ran out the door.
————————————————
Kook panted heavily and slammed his trembling hands on the counter, making the nurse's head jerk up in alarm.
"M-my f-father he's...he's..." he stuttered incoherently and the woman's eyes flashed with understanding as she eyed him in pity.
"Your name?..." she whispered softly and Kook gulped.
"Jeon Jungkook...m-my father's name is..."
————————————————
Jungkook frantically paced outside the door of the operation room while biting his nail, a habit he enacted when he was extremely stressed.
Cold sweat dripped down the nape of his neck and although it felt like he had been standing there for hours, it was only one at most.
The doors suddenly creaked open and his head shot towards the doctor who quietly stepped out.
His eyes brightened with hope but the doctor carried himself forlornly, making Kook's heart drop. "No...please...no...not again..." he thought desperately while approaching the man.
Kook took in a ragged breath. "Is he?..." he trailed off as his voice cracked and the doctor held his tight lipped frown but then finally shook his head dejectedly.
"...I'm so sorry but we did everything we could...I know the details weren't explained to you earlier but your father was involved in a DUI...he was way above the legal drinking level and crashed into another car...the injuries were severe..." the doctor continued speaking but Jungkook wasn't listening.
He was frozen in place. He only knew that his father had been involved in a critical accident due to the influence of alcohol but he would have never thought that it was because he had been driving and that other people were involved as well...
Jungkook could tell from the melancholic tone in the doctor's voice that the other victims didn't make it and he felt his eyes water.
"Who was in the other car?...." he asked but his heart raced nauseatingly, already knowing that he'd feel sick no matter what the answer was.
He watched anyways as the doctor clenched his fists, a sign that he was visibly upset about delivering series of bad news in one night.
"...it was a couple...a man and a woman..."
Kook's heart dropped when the words processed and he felt his body tremble, feeling the need to squeeze his eyes shut, a futile attempt at blocking out the strong wave of emotions that coursed through him.
Jungkook would give anything at that second to give those people their life back...he couldn't stand the fact that two lives were lost because of his father's mistake...two people who had friends, family, and others that cared about them...two people who no longer had the chance to make new memories....
He knew it was like pouring salt on an open wound but there was something he desperately needed to know.
"...did t-they have a-any kids?"
The doctor swallowed painfully, unable to stomach the fact that the young man in front of him, probably around the age of 18, would have to bear the weight of his father's actions.
But he couldn't lie...
"...yes...they had a...daughter.." he answered back regretfully and Jungkook flinched as more tears pooled in his eyes, making everything in front of him blurry.
Just like the night he had lost his parents, this girl had lost hers as well...
...she was going to go through everything he did and there was no one to blame but himself...
If only he had tried harder to help his father to curb his addiction, he wouldn't have been out there tonight, driving under the influence...if only he didn't give up...
...because if he hadn't, then this girl's family wouldn't have ended up as broken as his.
The doctor placed a firm hand on Kook's shoulder. "...your father...h-he won't last much longer..." he gently announced, feeling his heart grow heavy.
Jungkook kept his head bowed lowly but he hurriedly wiped his tears away "C-can I see him?"
His voice was barely above a whisper.
————————————————
An overbearingly sterile scent burned Kook's nose the moment he entered the bare, unlived room.
His eyes immediately zeroed in on the man lying still on the sheets and numbly, Kook stepped towards him.
There were numerous tubes connected to the man and bandages that were wrapped around almost every inch of bare skin on him.
Kook found it hard to breathe, overwhelmed by how frail the man appeared, but took a seat anyways.
He gently grasped his father's hand. "...I'm so sorry...I-I could have done something to stop this dad..."
He sucked in a choked breath and brushed his thumb on the back of his father's palm.
"...I should've been there for you when you needed me the most..." he continued with a whisper, his body wracking in anguish as he sobbed but then he felt something squeeze his hand.
Kook looked back to his father, stiffening when he realized that the injured man was already watching him silently.
Once again with a grave amount of effort, he shakily squeezed Kook's hand.
"D-dad" Kook barely choked out with a cry but then quieted down when he realized his father was trying to speak.
"K-kook-ah..." he rasped painfully and Kook nodded vigorously as he tried to hold back his trembling lips.
"...I-I've d-d-done so many..." he wheezed and Kook's tears fell silently "...things t-that I regret...I-I wish I c-could have realized that s-s-sooner..."
It hurt for his father to speak, but the man knew his time was coming to an end and even he himself felt his eyes water, knowing that he put his son through so many grievances...
"...I-I d-don't deserve to see y-your mother a-after ev-everything...b-but if there was one t-thing I want t-to make sure you know...it's that I-I love you..." His eyes conveyed the sincerity he struggled to express and for the first time in years, he was sober and coherent enough to see what his actions had done to his son.
He felt his lids grow heavy and they slowly fluttered shut. "...I'm s-sorry" he softly uttered and Kook wailed, unable to breathe due to the unbearable restricting pain in his chest.
His father had passed out, too weak to stay conscious and Kook turned to the unstable heart monitor in horror. "The n-nurse I need to-"
"Don't bother, he won't last much longer"
Kook's head snapped towards the voice behind him and his red, tear streaked face was met with an unreadable one.
Kook appraised the stranger in the room with caution. "W-who are you" he choked out while trying to catch his breath.
The man stepped towards Jungkook, making him flinch warily as he tried to calm himself down but he still grasped his father's hand tightly.
"I'm here to collect your father's soul"
Kook immediately felt his chest burn in rage; this stranger had the nerve to say such a thing. It would be a cold day in hell if the man thought he could get away with that.
"Get out. Now. Do you think this is a fucking joke!" He hissed dangerously but the man didn't react.
"Does it look like I'm joking Jungkook?" He answered back seriously and Kook froze, eyeing him in shock.
"H-how do you know my name?"
The man peered at Kook, his face void of anything that could give away his thoughts and that made Kook grow even more uneasy.
"I know the names of every person that I eventually have to collect..." the man answered back calmly and Kook's brows furrowed, unsure of why his heart was now racing nervously.
"...we've never met before but your mother has spoken quite a lot about you..."
Jungkook's heart leapt in a way that made him sick.
His mother...she...but...how could that be?
The man watched Jungkook's face change from incredulity to horrid confusion and felt a twinge of pity for the young boy.
But he had not lied. He had spoken to the boy's mother and it was because of that that he was here now, with a task that would be the most difficult trial Jungkook would go through yet.
"...my name is Death"
————————————————
There weren't many occurrences in Jungkook's life that ever took him by surprise anymore.
To him, there was nothing that could be worse than how abruptly his mother was taken away from him.
Yet tonight was another story entirely. For once in his life, Kook really believed that he was cursed; that for some reason, bad luck followed him everywhere.
Maybe it ran in his DNA or maybe he had been someone terrible in his past life. He didn't know...
But for some reason, he didn't doubt what the stranger had stated so calmly to him.
Deep down inside Kook just knew.
His eyes narrowed threateningly when he realized, only at that moment, what that meant.
His gaze shifted onto his father, who's breathing was growing more ragged every second that passed.
Kook felt his already beaten and bruised heart throb even more, but he resigned himself to the fact that there was nothing that could be done...the doctor had already explained what this stranger was only confirming for him...
...that didn't mean it hurt any less though.
Death studied Jungkook quietly and when he saw Kook's eyes water once more, he spoke. "Do you think people deserve a second chance?"
Jungkook said nothing, didn't even turn to Death's direction, but Death knew that he was listening. "Your father isn't a bad person, Jungkook. His choices were of his own will but that doesn't define who he is and who he used to be."
It made sense but despite how unconditionally Kook loved his father, he couldn't help but feel bitter about what his dad had done.
Kook's lips parted slightly. "...he killed two people tonight...they even had a daughter..." he whispered back emotionlessly while struggling to get rid of the lump in his threat that was choking him.
Death nodded. "He murdered but is it really that simple? The circumstances for every person are different. If you say that, then are you going to turn the blame to your mother, who was the reason why your father turned to alcohol? Or even to the man who murdered your mother? If we go further back, then what about the man who abused his son and turned him into the murderer that killed your mother who was innocent..."
Death crossed his arms. "...in that case, we may as well blame every single person in this world but you and I both know very well that every person's story is different."
Kook gritted his teeth; he couldn't argue with what Death was saying but he didn't understand what the point was.
"What I'm trying to say is that I don't believe your father was entirely at fault. Yes, there are many things he should take responsibility for but at the same time there are things that were out of his control. However, reality is that his soul will be punished because of his crime tonight and that's not a decision I can overrun." Death finished, finally getting to his point and that made Kook pause.
"Punished?..." Kook jerked up when he came to the realization of what that punishment was.
His father may not have been the best, but to Kook it didn't matter...his father recognized his mistakes and wanted to repent. He couldn't -shouldn't- be punished for that.
"No! Y-you need to do something. Please...." Kook begged desperately.
Death nodded once more and pushed himself off the wall he had been leaning on. "I'm trying..." He replied honestly, making Kook freeze in surprise.
"...but I need your help as well."
Kook steeled his gaze in urgency. "...I'll do anything...please...what do you want?..."
Death kept quiet for a couple of moments, internally having a debate with himself about what he was going to do.
He didn't have a choice though so he resigned himself to this difficult task...
"I need you to prove to me that people can change, that their sins don't define who they truly are." Death said carefully and Kook's brow furrowed.
"How?...I don't understand..." he mumbled confusedly and appraised Death, as if that would give him answers.
Death caught his gaze and held it, making Kook shiver. It felt as if Death could see his soul -everything-...his vulnerabilities, weaknesses and pain.
"...it's not going to be easy"
Kook stood. "I don't care...what do I need to do" he announced confidently but inside his heart raced in fear.
Death observed Jungkook calculatingly, taking in every detail for consideration, from the rigid way he carried himself, to the stubborn glint in his, still, teary eyes, and the determination he gave off, just to save his father.
This was a man with a pure soul, a rarity in this world.
Death didn't want to do this to the boy but it was also his last chance at proving that the humans did in fact deserve a second chance.
His fists clenched, hidden by the sleeves of his shirt. "...you'll need to become a Sin" He muttered desolately and Kook's breath hitched.
"What do you mean Sin?...but I'm..." he trailed off unsurely, prompting Death to continue.
He cleared his throat. "You'll need to carry the burden of punishing people who have sinned. People like your father and millions of others just like him...that's what it means to become a Sin." He explained and Kook felt his blood boil.
He stood, making the hair topple behind him. "Why would you do that?? That's exactly what you told me you didn't want! That's not saving anyone!" He cried out angrily, feeling as if he was being ridiculed.
Death shot him a pained smile in return. "...You're right, the odds are against you but it has to be done. There is no other way and it's also all the more reason why I think you can do it." He waited until his words were absorbed and then he added on.
"This is going to be the heaviest burden you'll have to bear, but if you're like me and you believe that people can change, then I don't think you'll give up. If you can overcome this trial, then maybe there is a possibility, no matter how slight, that others could as well. That's what I want from you"
Death studied Jungkook meticulously once again. Initially, he had only been in the hospital to collect the soul of the boy's dying father and impart the message that his mother wanted Death to share to him.
But when he had appeared in the room, silently watching the boy who he was sure would be scornful, he was met with the opposite instead. The boy was in tears unlike what he expected and it tugged at something within him.
"There's something about you..." Death didn't know what it was, nor was he going to question it too deeply.
Kook swallowed, thinking carefully over Death's words. "If you can make this work...w-will my father be saved?"
Death nodded. "...and so will everyone else who's life ended before they could change for the better"
Kook soundlessly turned to his father, who's face was creased in agony, and he quickly came to a decision. "Then I'll do it..."
Death regarded him calmly. "You need to understand something though. In order for this to work, you cannot keep your memories about our interaction...and everything about this life you've lived..."
Kook's eyes widened, wondering if he had heard wrong. "Nothing?...my friends, my parents...not one thing?.."
"Yes...this is crucial because you need to overcome this obligation yourself...I was specifically told that I couldn't be involved, even being here right now jeopardizes the natural flow of life but it was a risk I was willing to make. Jungkook, you need to be able to overcome this from the darkest pit of your despair and change your life around..." he trailed off and Kook stopped, knowing that there was more.
"What else aren't you telling me?..." he mumbled, making Death turn away.
"You will wake up with no memories...but not only that, for every one year you live after this day, it will seem like 100 to you...I will alter the other 6's memories as well but the world you will end up remembering will be of the past and it will replace all that you have...your reality will no longer be yours..."
He knew this was not something he should give a child responsibility for, but he was a desperate entity and he needed to choose he last member of the Sins carefully.
"...You will shoulder the burden more than the others and you will not be able to interact with them...This means that you will truly be alone...your mind will believe that you lived a solitary life for hundreds of years and that you will continue to do so alone forever...
It will be the most difficult and painful thing you'll go through and I won't force you to do this, but remember that if you do...
You'll have nothing Jungkook..." he finished gravely, making Kook swallow with difficulty as he tried to absorb the amount of information that was thrown at him.
The room remained silent for minutes, only the sound his breathing to accompany it and eventually Kook nodded bitterly, glanced at the heart monitor that was acting up -it was time.
"...I already have nothing" he whispered sadly as the monitor flatlined, and with that, Death nodded solemnly.
"...I'm sorry" he whispered, truly meaning his words and then silently approached the crying man as his fingers lit in a blaze of green flames.
He tapped Kook's forehead, and immediately his eyes rolled to the back of his head as he passed out.
The two were gone a second later without a trace.
————————————————
Kook flinched as his eyes opened, a blinding light seeping through the lids of his eyes.
It took him a couple of moments to adjust to his new setting and even then he had to blink multiple times to clear his vision.
There was an incessant pounding in his head but he forced himself to push it aside as he analyzed his surroundings.
The marble floor he was lying on was cold and chilled him to the bones but with a significant amount of effort, he was able to push himself off of it; his arms shaking slightly at the action.
Once he was on his feet he looked around him. The room was empty, save for one grandiose door a couple of steps ahead of him. There were no windows, no lights, nothing.
And yet the room was shining brightly.
"Where...am I? Where was I before this?..." he thought dazedly as he took tentative steps towards the door that hopefully should lead to a way out.
Every time he tried to think of what happened before he ended up in this quaint room, a blinding flash of pain shot through him, forcing himself to stop when he began seeing white dots at how unbearable it was.
"And...w-who am I?" He whispered softly in fear, his eyes widening in confusion when nothing came up in his head except a name and age.
The door he was walking towards slowly creaked open right before he reached it, making him pause suspiciously.
When he peered through the opening of the gap, he saw a figure sitting in a throne; a face hidden by the shadows.
There was a brief moment of silence before the man shifted, allowing Jungkook to see one feral smile.
"Welcome Jungkook..." his deep baritone voice spoke up and Jungkook shivered.
There was something dark, sinister even, in the way the man spoke that made Kook's blood run cold.
"...or should I now say, Envy?" The man finished darkly.
"...forgive me..." Death thought guiltily and readied himself for the pain the last and final member of the 7 Deadly Sins would have to go through
