(4) ...to get rid of your Pride
Jimin noticeably froze when you turned his way with a small smirk on your face -it hid what you were truly feeling: panic.
He was taken so off guard that the flames in his palms had flickered.
You pushed yourself off the post, stalking his way and Chim could only watch you -stoic on the outside but anxious on the inside.
Your steps died down as you finally stood in front of him. "It's about time you showed up..." You said in an even tone.
Chim's brow furrowed.
Not only did you somehow know what he was here to do, but you also had no trace of fear even knowing that.
This was the first time he hadn't been looked at in fear.
He would never admit it, but it made his heart race uncomfortably. This was also the first time he had come upon a sinner who had been expecting him.
Nevertheless he still had a job to do.
With that said, he plastered on an emotionless look and eyed you down coldly.
————————————————
You shivered at the frosty stare he shot your way and immediately knew that this was going to be harder than you imagined.
Again, that didn't deter you -at least not to the point where it would make you give up.
You schooled your expression and looked him straight in the eye. "Which one of the Sins are you?" You asked and then saw his finger twitch at your bold question.
Good. It was a sign that he wasn't 100% composed.
————————————————
He contemplated whether or not he should answer you back but his curiosity had gotten the better of him again; after all, when was the last time a human -for one- engaged him in a conversation.
He would break you regardless, but it didn't mean he couldn't spare a couple of minutes to see what you had to say.
In the end all humans were the same anyways.
————————————————
You watched his lips tilted to a sneer, creating a harsh contrast to his soft features.
If you hadn't met Jungkook, you would have never assumed that the man in front of you could have been an embodiment of Sin.
He looked too innocent, too pure and yet you knew first hand that looks could be deceiving.
His dark hair shone under the fluorescent lighting but his face remained impassive. There was a ghost of a smile that you imagine could brighten his features explicitly and you gaped at the how paradoxical this man was.
There was no doubt that he was gorgeous, but the soulless look in his eyes made you wonder what he had gone through in order to end up with this life.
Jimin watched you study him cautiously and he felt himself become intrigued.
He waited until you were done before he spoke. "Pride" he murmured quietly but under the silence of the late night, it couldn't have been any clearer.
Ah. So it had been your attempt at excessive arrogance that had drawn out Pride.
You didn't think you were much of a sinner but these days you had forced yourself make sure you did, in hopes that it would catch at least one of the Deadly Sin's attention.
And by sheer luck, it had worked.
You pushed aside the niggling fear that was slowly growing inside of you and stood your ground.
"Are you here to kill me?" You asked calmly and for one second you were sure you saw a flash of emotion -shock- pass through his eyes at your straightforwardness.
But just as quickly as it came, it disappeared and he took one step forward.
You had to force every fiber of your muscles not to flinch at his movement.
In a tantalizingly painful slowness, he brushed his fingers on your cheek and your breath hitched.
His hand was freezing and it sent your blood running cold.
He leaned down to your ears with a wicked smirk.
"No...I'm not going to kill you...I'm going to break you...so remember me the next time you let your conceit take over" he whispered, correcting you, and you stiffened at his response.
"Don't falter...this is for Kook..." you chanted in your mind and it helped because you were able to take a deep breath and turn back to face the man known as Pride.
Chim didn't notice as he lowered his arms, ready to grasp you with his hands that were glowing once again.
But right before he touched you, opened your mouth. "I need to find Envy" you stated firmly and the hand that was seconds from touching your skin, stopped in its tracks.
Recognition and understanding dawned upon Chim and he gave you his attention again.
You let out a breath you didn't realize you were holding, wiping away the sweat that had built up in your nervousness.
He took a step back and the glowing died out as he scrutinized you. "...So you must be the woman who he had given himself up for..." he mused emotionlessly and you hesitated before nodding.
You gave him a look. "I need to find him" you repeated, a hint of desperation in your tone and this time he looked at you carefully.
Chim couldn't understand why you would go to the point where you had to purposefully seek him out.
This wasn't the usual behavior he was accustomed to and he didn't know how he felt about it.
People were selfish; they put themselves before others -it was ingrained in their nature- and yet here you were standing in front of him with no obvious ulterior motives.
He didn't believe it for one second and he would of course take advantage of that.
Chim smiled and you recoiled in shock by how quickly his demeanor changed and how different he appeared because of one smile -despite how fake it was.
"Okay I'll help you..." he started off and you felt your heart bloom with hope.
He was transfixed by your reactions but knew that every human put themselves first and eventually everyone succumbed to their Pride -you were no different.
He smiled smugly. "...but what are you willing to do to get him back?" He questioned and you looked at him with as much seriousness as you could muster.
"Everything" you answered confidently and he nodded, as if expecting that.
"...then even if the price to pay is your own life?" He continued and you froze.
"My life..." you thought, not expecting that at all.
Was Jungkook worth sacrificing your own life for?
The answer came to you much more easily than you thought.
Yes.
It wasn't easy for you to say that and no amount of confidence could entirely get rid of the fear that paralyzed you, but you would do it.
You met Pride with another stubborn look as you grit your teeth. "...if that's what it takes" you answer back determinedly.
Chim didn't know why, but a rush of anger coursed through him.
He didn't like the defiant look on your face; it was one that went against every belief he had of humans: selfish, arrogant, conceited, cruel and more.
You showed purpose, sacrifice, determination and passion.
It dawned to him why that bothered him more than he wanted to admit.
...it was because you reminded him of who he used to be.
It was unacceptable.
He took two powerful strides forward and you backed away in fear, but felt your back press against a wall, trapping you.
His hand slammed beside your face. "Why!? Why are you sacrificing yourself for him when you're obviously shaking in fear at the thought of death" Chim demanded, his chest heaving at how hot-blooded he had become.
You watched him cautiously but stood your ground, now face to face with him.
"...because every man deserves a chance at redemption and that's worth sacrificing myself for" you shot back without wavering and he felt his heart clench at your words.
Redemption.
What a joke...
...and yet why hadn't he broken you already.
He couldn't possibly be...
No...
He clenched his fists, refusing to admit that deep down inside you had unlocked an array of emotions that he had buried a long time ago.
Chim gritted his teeth. "Death doesn't come easy, Human. What I'll do to you will make you wish you were dead; I won't just break you, I'll strip down your Pride and self-esteem and shatter your spirit. And yet you will still put yourself through all that just for one man?" He asked gravely.
You swallowed dryly, as you now grasped the full severity of this situation and your lips trembled but you had long ago accepted your fate when you allowed yourself to get involved with Kook -a man that singlehandedly broke through every limitation you had.
You were reminded of the broken look in his eyes despite how happy he tried to convince you he was, and that made you remember why you were doing this in the first place: you just wanted him to have a better life. -it was as simple as that.
It was that same look of disparity you saw in Pride's eyes that strengthened your resolve even more and you knew you wouldn't walk away.
You cleared your hoarse throat. "You can try and break me but I wont make it easy for you. I found something worth fighting for and I'm not going to watch it slip away when there's something I can do to save it, so go ahead and try." You exclaimed but you weren't finished yet.
Gently, you placed a hand on his chest. "You may not understand it, but there's a part of you that used to be human and you know that what I'm willing to do isn't something that is impossible for a human. Not all of us are the same and maybe once upon a time you would have empathized with me" you murmured and Chim tensed.
He remembered how people used to think he wouldn't amount to anything.
How he worked hard to perfect his dance, practicing from the dawn of mornings until the darkness of night where the first stars appeared.
He remembered the thrill of every movement, and the rush of adrenaline he felt after being better.
The passion.
The perseverance.
The hope
And most of all the self sacrifice.
And despite the criticism and pain, it was worth it all...
Even up to the moment he passed away he didn't regret dancing.
It was the people who had hurt him that made him afraid.
And over the years it seemed that he had forgotten that feeling.
That is until today.
Today he felt more than he had in years.
Something dropped onto the ground and he tentatively brushed his finger on his cheek, frowning when he felt something wet.
His eyes widened when he realized what it was; his tears.
You watched him in suppressed shock, unable to stomach the revelation of yet another defeated soul.
It wasn't right and you realized at that moment that Jungkook was only one of seven others who were probably just as troubled, if not more.
Chim blankly looked up at you but his expression was unreadable.
His hands glowed a deep purple and you knew this was it.
This was the end for you.
Your words hadn't been enough to save Jungkook but you had made an effort and that was better than nothing so you closed your eyes and waited for the blow.
"I'm sorry that I couldn't let you go Kook..." you thought one last time before the pain struck.
You didn't feel anything so you slowly opened your eyes and saw his palm, inches away from your forehead.
He was still shaking but he didn't move forward.
The two of you made eye contact and you saw the conflict in his eyes and even...hope?
He lowered his hands. "I-I can't..." he whispered and your eyes widened.
Your eyes followed his hand and you watched as he ran it through his hair.
He eyed you strangely. "You..." he began in a slightly hesitant voice.
He seemed quite uncomfortable and you see him fidget in his place. "...maybe there are still good people in this world..." he muttered softly under his breath and you frowned.
"What did you say?" You asked cautiously and he threw a weak glare your way.
"I said that you better keep up or else I'll leave you behind and then you won't find your lover boy!" he bit back with a scowl and your eyes widened.
Could it be?...
He cleared his throat uncomfortably at your grateful look, and turned around, walking off without any other words as he shoved his hands deep into his pockets.
You stumbled over your feet as you struggled to catch up. "W-wait! Pride!" You stuttered and he paused.
He tensed slightly didn't turn. "...my name is Jimin not Pride..." he mumbled and then continued walking.
Your jaw dropped.
The significance of him telling you his real name was heavy and it had you tearing up slightly because it meant that he was beginning to place his trust in you.
You grinned. "W-wait up Jimin!" You hollered again while running to catch up.
For the first time in 400 years, Chim's mouth tilted upwards in a genuine smile that creased his eyes.
