Chapter 9: Broken Mirrors Give Bad Luck
It has been about a month and a half since the girls' first weekend at Hogwarts. They have made a silent pact with each other to help out with homework so they have the weekends off to see Hagrid. Going down to see their new favorite adult on campus has been a regular thing for the girls since their first weekend.
Nothing abnormal has happened, other than Snape being somewhat nicer to Julia. However, everyone knows that his favorite house is still the Slytherins, and he will always pick the green and silver house over any other.
Olivia hasn't been bothering the girls either, and neither has Alex. Four of the girls think this as a blessing, but Lauren can't be so sure. For now, she'll just have to accept it and be on her guard.
The day is currently Wednesday in the third week of October. The girls are starting to get worn down by homework and the drag of classes, but they are staying strong through it. If only they didn't have to keep writing essays in Defense Against the Dark Arts, and actually start learning some spells.
"I'm so bored." Agnes admits as she lies down by the big lake. Classes have just ended for the day so the five friends decided to finish their homework by the lake.
Lauren puts her finishing touches on her History of Magic essay and closes her book. "Cheer up, Agnes. The week is halfway over."
"If only we could do magic outside of class. Then I could practice it." Agnes spins her wand in her hand and sighs.
Hannah sits up from lying in the grass and props herself up with her hands. "Class is practice. Plus, the teachers don't want us to hurt each other."
Agnes groans, knowing Hannah is right, and dramatically falls backward in the wet grass. She doesn't care if her messy hair gets into the mud and dead leaves. It must have rained last night because the ground is soft and the grass is damp.
"I know what can cheer you up." Julia looks up from the star chart she was helping Maria with. "The first Quidditch match is this Saturday."
"Awesome! Who's playing?" Maria asks, now curious. With as much as Agnes talks about the sport, Maria and the others already know most of the rules to Quidditch.
"You're right, it is this Saturday!" Agnes jumps up, her shoes sinking slightly into the mud. "The first game is always against the two houses who have the most points."
"Oh no!" Lauren gasps as she realizes who's playing in the first game. "That means it's Ravenclaw vs. Slytherin! Alex is going to definitely find me and say 'I told you so' if Ravenclaw loses."
"At least it's not Slytherin vs. Gryffindor." Hannah rolls her eyes and starts packing up her belongings. "My brother David would lose his mind if he versed Slytherin on his first match."
The five girls have been together so much, that they know the basics of everyone's family. The four other girls nod in agreement with Hannah at the thought of her brother going up against the Slytherins in a Quidditch match.
Maria catches something in the corner of her eye moving toward her, and turns her head to get a better look. It seems to be a girl walking toward the group. "Guys, is that Katie?"
Katie, Hannah's oldest sibling, a fourth year Ravenclaw and prefect, seems to be walking angrily toward the lake for some reason. Hannah and the rest turn their heads to also catch sight of Katie.
"Hey sis, what's up?" Hannah decides to approach Katie with a calm voice instead of an urgent one.
Something has definitely made Katie unhappy because she crosses her arms and glares down at her younger sister. "I am so disappointed in you! Out of all my siblings, I expected you to be the most responsible, Hannah."
"W-wha..." Hannah shakily stands up, tears threatening to spill out of her eyes. "What did I do? I've turned in all my homework on time-"
"Stop playing dumb! I may not be a prefect of your house, but I'm still your older sister!" Katie must have realized she yelled way too much because her expression softens. She sees Hannah quickly wipe her eyes and Katie uncrosses her arms. "Oh, Hannah, I'm sorry for snapping at you. Do you really not know?"
Hannah shakes her head, but no words come out. Maria quickly stands up and opens her Charms book. "If it's something that happened today, we have proof that Hannah was here helping us with Charms homework."
Katie puts a hand on her chin and thinks for a moment. Finally, she looks at the five girls individually and takes Hannah's hand softly. "Follow me."
Julia holds Katie's other hand to walk alongside her through the halls. Lauren, Agnes, and Maria walk behind the other three and don't say a word along the way. They want to ask why Katie came and yelled at Hannah, and what this is all about, but they remain quiet. Hannah squeezes her sister's hand softly, a bit scared about what made her so angry in the first place. Nothing has made Katie this mad since David hexed his writing quill to complete his homework for him.
The group of six climb up a few flights of stairs until they finally reach the fourth floor. Katie stops at a door and opens it, leading the girls inside. "Watch your step."
Katie was right to say that. Broken glass is spewed everywhere across the floor, and some shards are even stuck in the walls. Agnes slowly and carefully picks up one of the bigger shards, and brings it up to her face to see her reflection. "Someone seemed to be angry."
"It's broken pieces of a mirror." Maria points out. She looks at one of the mirror pieces stuck in the wall to see her blue eyes looking right back at her.
"The frame is still in tact, but the mirror itself has been blasted apart." Lauren carefully walks over the sharp shards to find the golden frame of the mirror still hanging on the wall. Some parts of the actual mirror are still hanging by a thread to the frame.
"I was told to come and investigate a loud booming noise that came from this room." Katie explains to the girls. "The person who did this must have been very skilled in the Finestra charm."
"So, why did you blame Hannah?" Agnes tosses the shard she was holding into the corner of the room.
"Not everyone has the unique ability to perform Finestra so precisely and... dangerously." Julia tries to explain without hurting Hannah's feelings. "A lot of witches and wizards can't do the charm at all. It takes a person born with the gift to produce such destruction with the charm."
"My sister is very good at it. Terribly good." Katie gently puts a hand in Hannah's shoulder. "She's the best one at it that I've ever seen. I came running down to the lake once I knew where she was."
"Kate, you know I wouldn't. I haven't done Finestra in years." Hannah looks at her sister, worried that Katie won't believe her.
"And she was with us the whole time!" Lauren tries to persuade the case that Hannah is innocent. "There is no way she could have done Finestra, gotten away without anyone seeing, and then made it to the lake without us knowing she left in the first place."
"I'm so sorry for not believing you, sis!" Katie kneels down and wraps Hannah in a hug.
Hannah would be mad, but she's just glad that Katie understands it wasn't her. "It's okay. Just make sure Ravenclaw beats Slytherin in the match this Friday and we are all even."
Katie laughs and stands up, looking around at the other girls. "Thank you all for supporting my sister. Now, let's get out of here so the teachers can fix this room up."
Saturday comes in the blink of an eye. The first years finish their flying classes early yesterday so that Madam Hooch can set up the field for the game. The incident with the mirror hasn't left anyone's mind yet, but the girls are so excited for this afternoon that they don't care about it.
Agnes, Hannah, Maria, and Julia are all going to accompany Lauren on the Ravenclaw side of the stands. It almost seems like everyone is rooting for Ravenclaw as well, except the Slytherins of course.
"Where's Ian?! He is going to be late for the game if he doesn't get down here soon." Lauren picks at her food with her fork. She told her brother to meet her in the Great Hall so he could walk with them to the stands.
"He will be down here, don't worry." Julia rubs Lauren's back in a comforting manner. "He might just be finishing his homework for the weekend or something."
"Yeah..." Lauren doesn't sound convinced. Ian has always been early for things like this, so why isn't he now? Did he forget?
"It's time for the match!" Agnes jumps up from her seat and fistbumps the air. "Come on, I want to get good seats!"
Maria quickly follows Agnes so she doesn't lose her in the crowd, and she wants Agnes to slow down for her friends. Hannah tucks the blue and bronze scarf she was given around her neck more and does her best to smile at a sad Lauren. "Maybe he's waiting for us in the stands."
Lauren sighs and stands up, following her friends out to the field. Her breakfast lays on the plate, forgotten by its owner.
The stands are nuts. So many students, basically the entire school, is crowded around in a ring high enough to see the flyers. There is just a bit more blue and bronze in the stands than there is green and silver, but if you just glance it looks pretty even.
The five girls are able to get seats next to each other, which wasn't that hard, and they got really good seats in the middle. Lauren almost forgets that her brother seemed to ditch her as she looks at the crowd of witches and wizards. "Wow."
"Slytherin is ahead in house points, so they get the ball first. Ravenclaw has to beat Slytherin in order to proceed." Agnes makes sure she's got all the information correct in her head.
"Here come the teams!" Maria points to the ground of the field, seeing the players that are sporting green and silver Quidditch robes. The announcer, a Hufflepuff sixth year named Amy Parks, lists off the last names of the Slytherin players in order of their position. After that, the Ravenclaw team comes out and Amy lists them off as well.
"No way! You have got to be kidding me!" Lauren gasps and grabs Julia's and Maria's arms since they are next to her. When Amy announces the Beaters for Ravenclaw, Johnson is on the list. "THAT'S MY BROTHER!"
"He must have wanted to keep it a surprise!" Hannah puts together that Lauren had no idea about him being on the team, and that he didn't show up to lunch today. "He has to be really good at keeping secrets, then."
After a couple more minutes, the captains of both sides shake hands and Madam Hooch lists off the rules. After the captains return to their sides, Madam Hooch blows her whistle and the game begins. Agnes and Lauren almost pass out from the excitement.
Slytherin gets the Quaffle first, which is the ball that the three Chasers use to score the points. A Slytherin Chaser throws the ball at a goal post, but Ian hits the Bludger at the Quaffle, knocking it away. Ian lifts his bat in victory, and Lauren jumps up and down, screaming for her brother.
The Quaffle is caught by a Ravenclaw Chaser and she easily scores. Ten to nothing. The Slytherin Beater has a dangerous glint in his eye. When the Slytherin Chaser pulls back his arm to score, the Beater swings his bat and hits the Bludger at the Ravenclaw Keeper.
The Keeper is the person who is supposed to keep the other team from scoring, and they aren't supposed to be targeted by Beaters. Madam Hooch blows her whistle and orders a penalty against Slytherin.
Ravenclaw scores again, rendering the score to be twenty to nothing. The game goes on like this, and there has yet to be a sign of the Golden Snitch. Ian gets a few more good swings in, making him responsible for half of Ravenclaw's points. Slytherin is able to catch up, however, and the score is now fifty to sixty, Ravenclaw.
"Did you see that?!" Agnes grasps Hannah's arm and points toward the field. "It's the Snitch! How has anyone not found it yet?!"
As if they heard Agnes, the Ravenclaw and Slytherin Seekers both make a nosedive toward the small golden orb. The Snitch flies out of the way and the chase begins. Agnes rolls her eyes and mumbles something along the lines of, "I would have found it twenty minutes ago!"
The five girls are so focused on following the Snitch and the two Seekers, that they aren't paying attention to the other players. Lauren hears her brother yell something, and she just has enough time to look up before a Bludger comes flying toward their spot in the stands.
"Watch out!" Lauren uses all of her body weight to push her friends out of the way. The five girls fall along with some other students, and the Bludger makes a hole in the back of the stands.
The five girls slowly stand up and look out the hole that the Bludger made. They all see the sphere coming back, so they get out of the way before it zooms back into the field.
Well, that's where it should have zoomed. Instead, the ball makes a complete 180 and slams into the stands again. Hannah has to fall onto the guy standing next to her so she doesn't get hit. The Bludger comes back quickly this time, and comes at Hannah's other side. The guy pushes Hannah out of the way and she falls to the feet of her spot in the stands. Hannah covers her head to protect it from the falling debris.
The Bludger raises up in the air before falling on its own right by Hannah's face. Hannah screams and covers her head more. The Bludger hits the side of Hannah's face as it comes shooting back up. Once it is raised in the air again, it comes shooting back down, aimed toward Hannah's head again. Before it could make contact, the Bludger explodes into yellow sparks.
Julia hurriedly turns Hannah over to see a big scrape on the side of her cousin's face. "Hannah! Are you okay?"
"I..." Hannah finds that her surroundings are becoming very blurry, and Julia's words are very distant. She tries to form more words, but nothing is coming out of her mouth except for mumbles. Slowly, Hannah closes her eyes, her surroundings fading away.
