Chapter 10: A Passage at Night
"I just can't believe our luck! First Hannah is accused of breaking a mirror, and now she gets attacked by a Bludger!"
"It's very unsettling. Any updates on that Bludger that attacked her, Julia?"
"No. If Professor Laney hadn't blown it up, Professor Dumbledore could have run a test on it. Maybe it was tampered with."
"Of course it was tampered with! And am I the only one who is surprised that Professor Laney is the one who destroyed the Bludger?!"
"Well, he is the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher," Hannah mumbles and slowly opens her eyes. She finds herself in a hospital bed, surrounded by her four friends, two older siblings, and the two other girls from her dorm room. She groans as she tries to lift her head.
Everyone is so relieved that Hannah is awake. Avery and Graesyn Ringe, the twins from Hannah's dorm, give Hannah an ice pack. "You had us worried sick!"
"Really?" Hannah winces a bit when she puts the ice pack on the side of her head.
"Yeah! Sis, who did you make so mad, that they sent a rogue Bludger at you?" David seems to be enjoying this way too much, but he's always the playful type.
"I'm not positive that the Bludger was aiming directly for me." Hannah tries to think, but her head hurts too much. "Who won the game?"
"Ravenclaw just barely." Lauren leans on Hannah's bed. "The two Seekers were too busy fighting for the Snitch to realize what was going on. The Ravenclaw Seeker was too fast for Slytherin, though."
"Hannah, no one hit the Bludger at you." Agnes wants to let Hannah know that she wasn't hit by any of the two teams. "It just started flying on its own. I was watching the Beaters along with the Seekers during the game, and it was weird."
"Yeah. Ian tried to hit it, but it swerved away from him." Maria recalls seeing the play, and remembers watching Ian trying to hit the Bludger.
Suddenly, the doors burst open and everyone looks over to see a group of teachers and Madam Pomfrey, the nurse, enter. Everyone besides Hannah moves to the far side of the bed to let the teachers have some room. Professors Dumbledore, Laney, and McGonagall walk up to the bed while Madam Pomfrey goes to the medicine counter.
"Thank heavens you're awake!" Professor McGonagall sighs in relief when she sees Hannah awake in her bed.
"Professor Dumbledore, sir, what was that?" Julia asks before she can stop herself. She hates how this is the first time she's actually talking to Professor Dumbledore. This is not the type of circumstance she imagined having her first conversation with him in.
"That, Ms. Copper, is exactly the question I think we all want answered." Professor Dumbledore softly answers Julia and turns to Hannah. "But, I suppose none of us know what caused this incident."
"Thank you, Professor Laney." Hannah does the best she can to form words. Her head is still splitting on the side where she got scraped.
"It wasn't a problem at all. I should have destroyed it sooner, but it wouldn't stay still. I didn't want to hit anyone." Professor Laney smiles kindly and then turns to Professor Dumbledore. "Professor, I request that we jump a tad forward in our lessons for my class. I want to educate my students better on attack spells."
All of the first years and David become very surprised. They all hold their breath, hoping with all their might that Professor Dumbledore will allow him to jump ahead in class. Professor Dumbledore turns to the students, and they all notice a twinkle in his eyes. "Of course you can, Professor Laney. However, I expect great grades out of all of you."
The students all nod, including Katie who couldn't care less about Defense Against the Dark Arts. Madam Pomfrey finishes her medicine mixture and ushers everyone out of the room. Hannah's friends say one last goodbye for the night, as she will be sleeping in the hospital for her head to fully heal.
"That was a ride." Agnes finally lets out a breath that she was holding.
Katie sees a group of students with their wands out and rushes off to do her prefect work. Avery and Graesyn hold hands as the two blondes walk back to their dorms. David stays behind and walks with the four friends.
"This doesn't make any sense." Maria puts a hand on her chin, trying to think.
"Tell me about it. Why didn't Professor Laney just lead with the spells? Why did we have to go through all those essays?" Agnes rolls her brown eyes at the thought of those essays she had to write.
"No!" Maria shakes her head. "I mean with the Bludger. Why did it target Hannah?"
"Are you sure it was targeting her specifically?" David asks. He wasn't in the stands next to them, so he didn't see the event as clear as they did.
"It had to have. That Bludger had everyone in the stands to attack, but it kept going for her." Lauren is set on the idea that the Bludger was targeting a specific person.
"The problem is, no one hates her." Maria keeps trying to think of who it could be. "Unless Olivia is trying to take us out, but she wouldn't be able to do that type of magic. She's only a first year like us."
"Who knew it would have been a problem that Hannah doesn't have any enemies." David chuckles. "That's my sister for ya. Nicest human on Earth."
"Maybe it was a mistake. What if the attacker was supposed to target someone else, but they hurt Hannah on accident?" Lauren suggests, even though she thinks that's probably the most least likely answer to this.
"You've been awfully quiet, Julia." Maria turns to her silent friend, and everyone else does as well.
Now feeling her friends' attention on her, Julia speaks up her thoughts. "I feel like the incident with the mirror that happened two days ago and the Bludger are linked somehow."
"Oh yeah! I heard about the mirror. Katie told me how she thought it was Hannah. She was a complete wreck the next day because she blamed Hannah for using the Finestra charm." David explains, "I remember how I had to get Katie to calm down so she could finish her Ancient Runes homework."
"That's it! David, you're a genius!" Lauren immediately stops walking and turns to Julia. "Give me that book."
Knowing exactly what she means, Julia gives Lauren the book filled with Ancient Runes. Lauren holds out the book to David. "Give this to Katie. Tell her that she can make it up to Hannah if she finds a quick way to translate this book."
"The whole thing?!" Agnes raises her eyebrows in shock.
"It's not that long. For a Ravenclaw, it shouldn't be that hard." Lauren sees that David isn't taking the book, so she shoves it in his hands. "It'd be ridiculous for me to try and translate it, but I know Katie can if she's taking the class. She'd know all the tips and tricks."
"And why do you need it translated?" David opens the book to find all the pages are filled with pictures and weird scribbles.
"We want to know what it's about." Julia decides to tell David about her detention, and how she found the book. She explains how she thinks it's important because it was the only book in Snape's cupboard that was written in Ancient Runes.
"Alright, I'll give it to Kate. You all better tell me what you find, though." David puts the book in his bag and walks off to find Katie. Hopefully he won't misplace it.
"I hope he knows what he's doing." Agnes watches as David walks away, and then turns to Julia again. "So, why do you think the mirror and the Bludger are related? And don't say it's because of some superstitious belief."
"Think about it." Julia turns to her three friends. "Both events involved Hannah. With the mirror, someone might have been trying to frame Hannah. Either that, or it was just a coincidence. Even so, Katie's first guess was that Hannah blasted the mirror apart."
"Why would someone break a mirror on the fourth floor to frame a first year girl?" Maria asks, a bit confused as to where Julia is going with this.
"You're right. They might not have been trying to frame her. Even if they were, how would they know that she can use Finestra with that much power?" Julia sighs in defeat, now at a dead end. "It maybe was just a coincidence then."
The four girls stand in silence for a couple minutes before concluding that they have no answer to this mysterious event. They all give up on trying to find the answer, and head over to Hagrid's to assure him that Hannah is okay.
Halloween came and went, and it was pretty fun. But now, snow has started to fall a month ago and everyone is getting ready for Christmas. Julia had her birthday in early November, so now she is eleven like everyone else. Hannah got out of the hospital the night after she was hit with the Bludger. Mostly everyone has forgotten about that day because nothing bad has happened. Well, nothing bad of that scale.
The Slytherins won their Quidditch match against Hufflepuff, so now Olivia is making Maria's life worse every time they're in the same room. She keeps bragging about how her house is better, and how she's the best at Potions. It's a mystery to Maria as to why Olivia wants to impress Professor Snape anyway.
Defense Against the Dark Arts is now almost everyone's favorite class. Professor Laney has taken Dumbledore up on his request and is now being more active in class. The students barely write anything down now, and they are starting to learn simple defense spells.
It's a week before Christmas, and the Great Hall is decorated with huge Christmas trees and a snowy sky. The five girls are just leaving the Great Hall from dinner, and are going to their dorms for the night.
"Finally, we are on Christmas Break!" Agnes jumps up in victory of not having the next two weeks filled with school.
"That means we have time to study all of the stuff we learned!" Lauren squeezes a book close to her chest. The other four girls groan, not wanting to worry about school for the next two weeks.
"Hey, Julia!" The five friends turn around to see Katie walking up to them with a big smile on her face. "Here's your book back. I was just going to translate a section of it, but it was good practice for my Ancient Runes class. I just finished translating the last chapter."
"Oh my goodness! Thanks, Katie!" Julia takes her book back and puts it in her bag. "I'm glad it helped you practice. Was there anything interesting written in it?"
"Just different potions for advanced students. Hope you enjoy, I have to go to a prefect meeting." Katie quickly leaves and speedwalks down the hallway.
Suddenly, Julia's objective has changed for the night. "I'm going to the fourth floor when everyone is asleep."
Lauren and Hannah immediately stop walking and the other three turn toward them. Hannah whispers, "Are you crazy?! That's breaking the school rules!"
"It's the perfect time to check out the room! None of the teachers are letting students up there, and I know something important is in there. I just need time to look around. I wanted to wait until further on in the holiday break, but Katie gave the book back. This is too great an opportunity to pass." Julia tries to convince her friends.
"No, no, it's way too risky. Let's sleep it off and wait until during the day tomorrow and make a plan." Lauren suggests, which makes Hannah nod in agreement.
"Sorry, but I'm on their side on this one." Agnes says and continues to walk up to her dorm room. The Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff part ways from the Gryffindors so they can go to their rooms as well.
Julia waits until everyone is asleep before sneaking out of her room. She doesn't make a sound as she opens the door and walks down the stairs. She quietly sneaks through the Fat Lady portrait, gripping her wand and her now translated book. Once she enters the hallway, Julia starts making her way to the staircases.
The Gryffindor girl is a bit scared of how dark the hallways are at night. She's just realizing that the last time she was walking around here at night, was right before the Sorting. It's also so quiet and eerie. She hopes that she doesn't run into Filch or Mrs. Norris. That would get her into big trouble.
Julia makes it to the staircase, but before she can climb up she feels a hand grasp onto her shoulder. "AGH!" Julia spins around and holds out her wand in front of her, remembering the stunning spell her dad taught her.
Maria holds up her hands to let Julia know she means no harm. Julia relaxes and sighs in relief. "What are you doing here?!"
"I want to help! I knew you'd go with or without everyone." Maria whispers and slowly puts down her hands. She is also carrying her wand just in case. "Besides, you shouldn't get in trouble again. I don't want you expelled."
Julia smiles, glad that Maria has come to help her. "Well, I could definitely use the help. Let's go, we just have to climb the stairs."
Maria turns on her wand light with the help of the Lumos spell. Together, the two creep up the stairs. They don't run into anyone, thankfully, as the two make their way up to the fourth floor. Finally, they are able to weave through the changing staircases and reach the fourth floor. Julia remembers which door it was, so she easily finds the room with the broken mirror.
All of the shards have been picked up. They were probably thrown away. All that's left is the golden frame that used to have the mirror displayed. Maria closes the door softly behind her so no one suspects them.
"What are we looking for?" Maria asks, pointing her wand toward corners to lighten them up.
"I'm not sure yet." Julia slowly walks toward the back of the room. "Something out of place, something suspicious."
The girls look around the room for what seems like two hours. They find nothing of use within that time. The room is one of the most empty rooms in the entire building. Julia sighs and sits against the wall, giving up. Maria takes one last look around the room and stops at the golden frame.
The frame shines in the Hufflepuff's wand light. She brings up her hand to the wall in the middle of the frame, and is surprised when she sees it move. The wall moves like a curtain. In fact, it is a curtain. Some sort of magical fabric that is made to look like the wall around it.
"Julia, the wall..." Maria doesn't need to explain it any further. Julia hops up and sees what Maria is talking about. The Hufflepuff grabs a fistful of the fabric and pulls it off the wall.
The golden frame is now framing a hole in the wall, perfectly shaped in a rectangle. Julia and Maria look at each other before the Gryffindor steps into the passage. Maria follows her friend. Julia looks back and says, "Hang up the curtain behind you so no one knows."
Maria helps Julia put the curtain back up, making the exit look like a wall behind them. Together, the two Hogwarts first years start making their way through the tunnel, and no one in the castle is aware of their absence.
