Chapter Four

Previously...

"Kyrah! What's wrong? What happened?" Zuber asked, holding her by her arms, and shook her.

He had come back home and the first thing he saw was Kyrah sitting on the floor clutching herself, fear evident in her teary eyes.

"Say something!" he asked frantically.

"I-I-I....had a nightmare," Kyrah said hysterically. "Some snake haunts me in my dreams! I feel so terrified. I-I don't want to die!" she wailed helplessly.

"Shh! Calm down. Everything is going to be okay, trust me," Zuber said, holding her gently by the arms.

Looking into her deep, blue eyes he consoled her, "If this makes you feel any better, I can understand what you're going through."

"How?" Kyrah sniffled, staring into his marbly light-blue eyes.

"Leave that, how about we play a game?" Zuber suggested.

"Really? I love games," she squealed, forgetting her terrible dream for now.

"How about I ask you three questions? Be truthful," he said. "You can have your turn after that."

"Alright! That's easy because I seldom lie," she said.

He used to lie seldomly too, until now..." Zuber thought.

"Well, here is my first question. Why were you outside the palace, before I kidnapped you?"

"I ran out of my room, as I was upset. My parents were forcing me to meet Prince Judewin of the neighboring kingdom. They want us to get married. I don't want to. I want to fall in love," she said shyly.

Zuber listened stoically. "What is love for you?" he asked, getting interested.

"Love is a feeling when someone genuinely cares about you, irrespective of your age, height, weight, race, IQ, personality, status or education. It is about the small things, like asking whether you had food, how your day was, complimenting and appreciating each other, giving each other time and valuing your partner's presence in life. To stay in love all the time. To be with that person in both high and low times. It's like you can't live without him/her. I want that madness in love. I want to be loved infinitely. There is no ending for true love. To me, love is eternal, it's a feeling of complete belonging," she sighed, "I don't know if I can find what I seek," she completed.

"For a princess, you are quite simple. You can get whatever you want, just ask for it," he said.

"No, it can't be that way, I am betrothed to him. How much ever I wish to marry for love, I can't. I have no choice," she said shaking her head sadly.

He could show her what love was, he thought.

"My last question," he asked, "why don't you like being called a princess?"

"Well, I don't like this segregation, if you know what I mean. For me, everyone is equal. I am not superior in any way just because I have this title. I believe our good deeds come with us, both here and in heaven," she answered.

"If you are done with your questionnaire, can I have my turn now?" she asked.

He nodded in approval, folding his arms to his chest.

"Why did you kidnap me?" she asked straight away.

"You will be safer here than anywhere else," was his curt reply.

"Why?" her voice hinted fear.

"Do I count this as your second question?" he asked raising an eyebrow. "I don't mind telling, but you will be left only with--"

"No," she cut him off, getting irritated. "I have better ones to ask."

That worked, he thought.

"Why did you care to know what I think about love? You don't seem like a kidnapper to me."

"Not everyone is heartless. My job is my job. Treating you harshly isn't a part of it. Unlike others, I do have a conscience. You believe in love, that's why I wanted to know what you think about it," he completed in one breath.

Kyrah stared at him dumbfoundedly.

"It's rude to stare, Kyrah," Zuber said with a smirk.

"Uh-Um, I am sorry," she said sheepishly. "Wait a minute, did you call me Kyrah?"

"Okay, I am counting this as your last question."

"No! Wait. My last question is, have you ever been in love?"

Hearing this, Zuber's face lost its smirk. "No, but I wish to," he replied quietly.

"Well, well, well, what do we have here? A softie?" Kyrah asked. Her peal of laughter sounded like silvery ringing bells to Zuber.

"Oh my! I have never laughed this hard in ages!" she said, clutching her sides.

He sat there staring at her, cupping his face with his hands, a beautiful smile illuminating his whole face.

Kyrah sobered down while looking at him. A smile lit up her face seeing his infectious one.

"You know, you should smile more often. You look really nice," Kyrah said happily.

"Same to you," he said, his ears turning red with the compliment.
"Excuse me," he said and went to the bathroom.

She shouldn't be making him feel this way. Why was he getting soft? His mind juggled with his thoughts.

Meanwhile, Kyrah was staring into space with a smile plastered on her face. She hummed a melody, feeling contented and peaceful.

Perhaps, getting kidnapped wasn't such a bad thing after all, she felt.
