Chapter Two
As I crossed the boarder, I saw camp halfblood. There were a lot of different buildings, and a lot of kids all around teenager age.
Kevin lead me to a big sky blue house that was to the left of the tree.
We went to the porch, where two men were sitting playing poker. One was in a wheelchair, and one was wearing a Hawaiian shirt.
They guy in the Hawaiian shirt rolled his eyes, and the guy in the wheelchair smiled, put his cards down, and rolled over to me.
"Are you new here?" He asked, and I nodded.
"I'm Chiron. I'm the activities director here at Camp Half-blood. Do you know what you are?"
"A half-blood. Apparently my biological mom is Demeter."
"Good. I'll have someone give you a tour. Wait here."
He stepped out of he wheelchair and revealed he had the bottom half of a white stallion.
He galloped away, and I stood, shocked.
"Centaur" Kevin informed me.
I laughed. "Right..."
I looked around me in silence, trying to comprehend what was around me, and what I had heard. I failed.
A few minutes later, Chiron came back with a boy around my age. He had sandy blond hair, blue eyes, and a scar diagonally across his face.
He walked up to me, "I'm Luke, I'll give you a tour"
"O-okay. Wait, if your here... one of your parents is a god?"
"Yeah"
"Which one?
He sighed, "Hermes. Technically"
"Technically?"
"Let's go" he said, and started walking. He showed me the tennis court, the arts and crafts building and the the amphitheater, all with campers in them. All perfectly normal for a summer camp. Then we got to the climbing wall. The lava climbing wall.
"Is that.... lava?"
"Yeah. That's the lava wall"
"But how would you not get burned by the lava"
He shrugged "You climb faster than it"
"Okay, then"
He laughed. "You'll get used to how we do things here"
"I guess I'll have to, if I'm going to be here all summer"
"Yeah. You can also stay year round if you want. I do"
"You don't miss your parents? Or, mom, I guess, if she didn't remarry"
"I ran away when I was nine"
"Oh"
We continued on to the mess hall, then, after passing a group of cabins, the arena.
"What's this?"
"The arena"
I stared at him, eyes wide. "Arena? Like Roman gladiators?"
"For practice. We're Greek, not Roman, remember?"
"Right. Okay, so you guys practice, like, sword fighting in there?"
"Exactly. And here's the armory" he started walking into the building. "Let's get you a weapon"
"I'm not so sure giving me a weapon is such a good idea." I warned him.
"Everyone needs a weapon, for fighting monsters, training, capture the flag" he explained.
"Capture the flag needs weapons?!" I exclaimed.
"Yeah. It's meant as a fun way to train us. So, pick a weapon"
"Um, okay" I looked at the shelves in front of me, and, after a minute, picked up a shining bronze knife.
"Can I have this one?"
"If you want"
"I wouldn't be asking if I didn't want it" I said, purposely being difficult. He just rolled his eyes and walked out of the room.
I followed him, holding the knife awkwardly.
He showed me the stables, then we doubled back to the cabins. As we walked by, he told me what god(ess) the cabin was for.
Finally, we stopped at a brown cabin with flowers and things growing on the roof.
"This is the Demeter cabin, I need to talk to the cabin counselor before you go in, though" he knocked on the door, and a girl that looked about twelve.
"Can you get Katie for me?" She nodded. "Thanks.
She walked back in, and a few seconds later, a girl a year or two younger than me walked out, and shut the door behind her.
"Hi Luke" she looked at me, "new camper?"
"Yeah, she already knew her mom was Demeter when she got here"
She nodded, "I'm Katie Gardner"
I waved. "Fiona Fairfield"
"Follow me," she said, walking back into the cabin.
I followed her, and she motioned for me to sit, so I sat down on a chair made out of vines.
"I'm the councilor for the Demeter cabin. If you need anything, or if someone breaks a rule like the 'no killing or maiming during capture the flag' rule. Okay?"
"Uh, o-okay"
"You can go pick out any bed without stuff next to it"
I picked out a bottom bunk, next to a window, and put my stuff in the trunk at the end of the bed.
I was overwhelmed by everything, and didn't know what to do, so I just sat in my new bed reading until curfew. I was reading a good book, though, Moving Target.
When I tried to fall asleep, though, I found I couldn't. I simply had too much in my head. After laying there for about half an hour, I decided to go on a walk.
I made sure every one else in my cabin was asleep (or, at least, looked asleep), then grabbed my shoes, tiptoed over to the door, and slipped through.
When I got outside, I put my shoes on and started walking in a random direction.
I ended up in a forest that Luke forgot to tell me about, and climed a tree. I sat there, thinking, and enjoying the smell of nature.
