Surprises
Cleo Gibson? Cleo Gibson?!
No, it couldn't be! Could it?
Maybe it's one of Grammy's sisters. Only one way to find out!
Just as I was about to turn the page of the diary, I heard the house door open. Grammy!
I shoved the diary under my pillow, and hurriedly pushed my dresser back in place. Then I ran out of my room, into the hallway, and came face to face with...SHARELLE?
She looked at me in shock, but I'm sure she was not as surprised (and confused) as I was.
"Sharelle? What are you doing here?" I asked.
" Well," she said with a little sigh, looking a little depressed. "It's a long story, but I'm staying here with my Grammy for a while. Um, why are you here?"
My breath hitched.
"This is my Grammy's house," I stated.
I waited for her to comprehend this new piece of information, and smiled when her eyes grew wide with realization.
But before she could reply my Grammy walked in carrying a suitcase.
"I see you girls have met!" something flickered in her eyes but I didn't quite catch it.
"Grammy we are sisters! Possibly twins too!" I said, with a grin bright enough to blind someone.
"You two are NOT sisters." She stated with a grim look on her face.
Sharelle and I gave each other a knowing look. She didn't want us to know.
"Then my dearest grandmother, you are telling us that we are not related at all?" I said while walking around my Grammy with my arms folded across my chest. Lawyer Style!
"You are cousins! End of discussion!" she shouted, dropping the suitcase on the floor.
I gaped at her, Grammy hardly ever shouts. It just seems so out of nature for her. And cousins? Yeah right! Grammy had one other child and that's Uncle Caldwell! I'm sure he didn't have any children.
She closed her eyes for a second (probably to regain her composure) and then told Sharelle to follow her to the back rooms.
Naturally, I followed. Sharelle followed Grammy pass my bedroom (I had left my door wide open) and when she looked inside she gasped. I gave her a look that said "What's wrong?".
"Every time I come here this door is always locked." She stated while staring into my small living quarters.
"Oh," I said while staring into my room as if I'd never seen it before.
"Is this your room?" she said, brightening.
"Um, yeah!" I was still a little shocked that Sharelle had been here before and my door had always been locked.
But Sharelle was once again cut off by my our Grammy. She was up the hallway to the bedroom that was next to the bathroom.
"Sharelle, this where you kin be staying, ok?"
"Yes ma'am." Sharelle said politely.
"I gon in the kitchen to check on this food." She said, while walking towards the end of the hallway. Wait, is that... a limp? When did Grammy get that? I'll ask her about it later.
When I turned around, Relly was already unpacking as if she'd been there lots of times.
" So, um, why are you here?" I questioned as I made my way into the room. Then realizing how that sounded I quickly added:
"That is, if you don't mind me asking!"
"Well, I'll tell you because you are my sister." She said giving me a little smile.
"When I got home Grammy was at my house along with police and an ambulance. My Granddaddy had a heart attack."
I gasped. A heart attack? I couldn't imagine what my Grammy having a heart attack would be like.
"They had to fly him to the hospital in Nassau. I have to stay with Grammy until he fully recovers."
She had started to tear up at the end. I started crying as well, I can't stand to see people cry so I usually end up crying with them. After we had been crying for 3 minutes straight I decided to be positive.
"Well, look on the bright side: we would have never been sure we were sisters unless this had happened and now we get to spend a lot of time together." She didn't look fully convinced so I added "I know he'll be ok, Rells. I bet he's strong, just like you."
Then she smiled a little.
"Well, I'm starving! Let's eat. Do you know what's for dinner?"
I grinned, that sounded like the Relly I just met a couple of hours ago.
"Yup! Sheep tongue souse." I told her already smelling the souse that was being reheated.
"Yum! Come on slowpoke, there's food waiting to be eaten!" she shouted at me, already running down the hallway.
I laughed, "You ain't gattie tell me twice!" following her to the kitchen. Wow! I have a twin sister. I wonder what else Grammy was lying to me about. What if, my mommy isn't... nah, that's too far-fetched. Or is it?
