Chapter Six: The Announcement

King Cornel

Standing at the threshold of a defining moment, I, King Cornel, prepared to reveal a truth kept hidden for years: the existence of my daughter, Shauna. I had watched her grow from afar, always with a pang of regret for the distance between us. Her vibrant hazel eyes, rich skin tone, and warm, welcoming smile haunted my memories. I had asked her mother, before our painful separation, to name her Shauna – a name rich with meaning.

My brother approached, his voice tinged with skepticism. "You're really announcing a Hominin child of yours?"

"Yes," I replied, firm in my resolve. "Torell is abdicating the throne, and he wishes for Shauna, his only sibling, to succeed him."

His disbelief was palpable. "How can you consider an uncivilized child to rule Eminence and the Solar System?"

I felt a surge of protective anger. "In ten minutes, you'll need to start thinking of that 'uncivilized child' as your future queen. Don't oppose me in this. If she fails the Elders' test, Torell will then pass the crown to you. But until then, she is our future."

Leaving him to ponder my words, I stepped into the press room, where reporters from Hominin, Vantage, and Eminence were gathered. The air was thick with anticipation and curiosity. I could sense the undercurrents of rumors and gossip that had spread through the Palace.

As I faced the sea of reporters, a sense of duty and hope filled me. This was about more than a throne or a title; it was about righting a wrong, about giving Shauna a chance to know her heritage, to embrace a destiny that was rightfully hers.

As I stood before the throng of reporters, a wave of solemnity washed over me. "Good morning," I began, my voice steady. "I need to clarify a few things. Twenty years ago, during my stay on Earth to ensure peace after the war, I fell in love with a Hominin woman. We had a daughter, but at the same time, I was betrothed to Queen Libia by the Council. Duty called me away from my child, who, after her mother's untimely death, was left to navigate the world unaware of her heritage."

The room was silent, hanging on every word.

"My son recently located her, and she is now en route to Eminence to claim her birthright as my daughter. She will be formally recognized as Princess Shauna and addressed as Duchess until her coronation. I know this is a lot to take in, but I ask for your empathy and support."

The floodgates opened, questions firing from every direction. I answered as many as I could, maintaining my composure under the barrage of inquiries.

Suddenly, the Captain of the Bellicose, a longtime ally, burst in. An assistant leaned in, whispering urgent news: "The Prince's ship has gone down in the Dark Zone of Vantage."

As the room erupted with the sound of alert notifications, a reporter's question cut through the chaos. "Is your daughter's life in danger?"

In the War Room, the air was thick with tension. "Where exactly are they?" I pressed the Captain, the urgency in my voice unmistakable.

"They've landed in the Dark Zone's densest part. Hawk and Viper are with them, experienced in survival tactics," he reassured me, but his words did little to calm my racing heart.

I proposed deploying an extraction team, desperate to take action. "We need to get them out now," I insisted.

The Captain, however, counseled restraint. "Your Majesty, we must trust Hawk and Viper's expertise. Rushing in might complicate matters. Let's wait 72 hours."

My brother, always ready with his cynicism, chimed in. "And what if they encounter the dangers of the Dark Zone? Shauna is untrained in our ways. She might not withstand the jungle's perils."

His skepticism pierced through my already fragile composure. Angrily, I exited the room, unwilling to entertain his pessimistic speculations any further.

Standing alone before a vast window, I gazed out over Eminence, my kingdom – a realm soon to be partially entrusted to my long-lost daughter. My heart was a tumult of emotions: fear for Shauna's well-being in the hostile environment of Vantage's Dark Zone; frustration at my inability to protect her; hope that she would emerge unscathed and ready to embrace her royal destiny.

Thoughts of Shauna's mother, her warmth and grace, flooded my mind. I wondered, had Shauna inherited her mother's strength? Could she survive the hardships of the Dark Zone and rise to the challenges of royalty?

The view before me was a stark reminder of the responsibilities awaiting Shauna, of the legacy she was unknowingly born into. As I stood there, a king and a father, the weight of my crown felt heavier than ever. In that quiet, solitary moment, I made a silent vow to support Shauna, to guide her through the trials and tribulations of her newfound identity, to be the father she never knew she had.

As I was addressing the press about my daughter, Shauna, becoming a Princess, Captain Stunner, a longtime ally, burst through the doors with urgent news. "The ship with the Prince has just gone down in the Dark Zone of Vantage," he announced. As he spoke, reporters' phones started beeping with alerts, and questions flew at me about Shauna's safety. Concerned, I hurried into the War Room to get more details.

"Where exactly are they, Captain?" I demanded, trying to mask my rising anxiety.

"They're deep in the Dark Zone, but they're with Hawk and Viper," the Captain reassured me. "They've navigated that terrain many times."

"Shouldn't we send a rescue team immediately?" I suggested, eager to take action.

The Captain shook his head. "I wouldn't recommend it. The terrain is treacherous, and locating them could take weeks. Hawk and Viper know what they're doing. Let's give them 72 hours before we escalate the situation. I trust them to bring her back safely."

My brother, ever the critic, interjected with a snide remark. "I hope the new Princess can fly or swing through trees because that jungle isn't forgiving. Does she even have those skills yet?"

His words struck a nerve, but I composed myself and walked out of the room, refusing to engage with his doubts. I needed to maintain a front of calm and confidence, trusting in the skills of Hawk and Viper to protect Shauna.

Amidst the swirling chaos and uncertainty about my children's safety, I sought a moment of solace beside my ailing wife, Queen Libia. Her condition had worsened, yet her spirit remained strong. As I approached her bedside, her eyes flickered with recognition. "Cornel," she whispered, her voice hoarse from illness, sparking a pang of concern in my heart.

"My love," I replied, taking her fragile hand in mine, feeling its delicate bones and the coolness of her skin. She attempted to speak, each word a labor of love, and with every effort, my admiration for her deepened.

"I'm so proud of you for revealing your truth," she managed, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm sorry it took so long." Her eyes, filled with a mix of pain and pride, met mine.

My throat tightened as I responded, "I fear it may be too late." The weight of my past decisions, the secrecy, and now the peril our daughter faced seemed to converge in that moment, threatening to overwhelm me.

Libia squeezed my hand, her touch as reassuring as it was gentle. "It's never too late to do the right thing," she insisted. "She is going to love you." Her smile, though weak, radiated a warmth that filled the room.

Watching her drift back into sleep, her chest rising and falling with shallow breaths, I felt a renewed sense of resolve. Libia's courage and unwavering support fortified me against the doubts that had clouded my mind. With her belief bolstering my spirit, I prepared to face whatever challenges lay ahead, armed with the hope that indeed, it was not too late for redemption and reconciliation.
