Chapter 3

Narrator POV

The bus started to stop, Izuku stirred from his nap, his eyes slowly adjusting to the dim light coming through the windows. The ruckus of his fellow students filled the air and the students started to leave the bus. With a yawn, Izuku got up from his seat and began gathering his things. As he stepped out of the bus Izuku remembered Uraraka's request to take pictures of the exhibit. Taking out his camera, Izuku began fiddling with its settings, making sure that everything was in order. A sudden jolt sent him stumbling forward. Izuku watched as his camera slipped out of his grasp and fell to the ground. Izuku tried to catch the camera but he wasn't fast enough. Izuku slowly saw the camera fall but then he felt something yank his neck. Confused, he looked down and saw his camera dangling from his neck, realizing that the camera was being held up by a strap that was around his neck. Bakugo and his friends started laughing. He felt his face grow hot with embarrassment as more and more people turned to look at him, their expressions a mix of confusion and amusement.

Izuku's POV

Geez! Kachan almost made me drop my camera. Why does he always have to be like that? What does he gain from bumping into me and making me drop my camera? Can't he just leave me alone for once? It's okay Izuku, just take some deep breaths, refocus, and stay calm. You just have to take some pictures and take some notes, in and out, simple as that.

Narrator POV

As he took pictures of the outside of the building, Izuku's mind started to wander, replaying all the times Bakugo had bullied him over anything and everything. It was hard not to feel a bit of resentment towards his childhood friend, but Izuku knew he had to let it go if he wanted to enjoy the exhibit. As the teacher instructed the class to enter the exhibition, Izuku took a deep breath and followed the rest of his classmates, his camera still slung around his neck. As Izuku wandered through the exhibit, his eyes shined with curiosity and wonder. Everywhere he looked, he saw something new and exciting, each display more fascinating than the last. But it was the engineering and chemistry exhibits that truly captured his attention.

Soon Izuku scribbled down notes as the scientist/tour guide delved into the complexities of quirks. As he absorbed every word, his excitement only grew. Suddenly, the door opened and in walked Dr. Connors, the renowned scientist, expert on quirk genetics, and biologist mainly specializing in herpetology.

All eyes in the room turned towards him. As he introduced himself he cracked a few jokes about his missing right arm, he casually walked over to a case and started explaining what he's been working on for the past 2 years.

"These 8 spiders you see here are not just any ordinary spiders, they hold the key to unlocking the true potential of quirks for future generations. We all know that animals, insects, and arachnids in this case are incredible creatures with abilities that seem super natural to us. Since the introduction of quirks we no longer see them as something incredible but as something normal but what about the less fortunates like the ones with a weak quirk, the people that are dying but our technology and quirks are not enough to save them, and what about the quirkless. I have found a way harness these traits for the greater good. Everyone deserves better and we can do this with these spiders. Does anyone know how?" Dr. Connors said with great passion but the question he asked was a rhetorical one not expecting a middle schooler to know the answer.

As the group huddled together, their minds raced with possibilities. The question on everyone's lips was the same: what the hell did spiders have to do with it? Theories were tossed around left and right, but nothing seemed to stick.

Just as Dr. Connors was about to reveal the answer, a soft, timid voice piped up from the back of the group. All eyes turned towards the source of the sound.

"Cross species genetics." Izuku said quietly.

As the crowd parted, a green-haired boy with thick-rimmed glasses caught Dr. Connors' eye, drawing his attention towards the young man who seemed to release an aura of intelligence and curiosity.

"Uh, uh, umm...like the example y-you used in your book...when a person gets, uh, Parkinson's because the brain cell that produces dopamine starts to disappear...but, um, the zebrafish has the ability to regenerate cells on command. And if, uh, if you somehow give this ability to a person that has Parkinson's, they can cure themselves! And with these spiders you can harness traits that spiders hold like their ability to lift something far much, uh, heavier than them or the ability to stick to walls. Someone with a weak quirk or no quirk could use this to enhance themselves, it's the future of quirks!  I-it doesn't have to just be only zebra fishes or spiders. It can go way beyond that. We can even use starfish, lizards, and some species of crabs to be able to heal big wounds, or even...regenerate a limb" Izuku said quietly yet confidently but he did say the last part much more quitere not wanting to come across as impolite.

Dr. Connors was highly impressed not only for Izuku's knowledge but also by his apparent familiarity with his work. The sudden attention from his classmates made Izuku feel self-conscious, causing him to stumble over his words and blurt out whatever came to mind.

"I-I just wanted to say that... umm... I'm a really big fan of you, Dr. Connors. Your work on quirks has really gotten me more interested in the subject. I've read all your books, watched your interviews, and even your TED talks on YouTube... they're amazing!" Izuku stammered, his words stumbling out of nervous excitement.

"Yeah no shit you'll find it interesting, 'cause you're quirkless, you useless nerd!" Bakugo said.

As the classroom erupted in giggles and snickers, Izuku's heart sank with humiliation. He felt himself shutting down, he tried to fade into the background desperately trying to escape from the spotlight.

"Who's that boy?" asked Dr. Connors with a curious tone.

With a cocky smirk, Bakugou turned his head towards Dr. Connors, reveling in the attention he was receiving. "The name's Katsuki Bakugou, and don't you forget it, 'cause I'm gonna be the greatest hero that's ever existed!" However, he was caught off guard by the response he received from Dr. Connor.

"No, I was talking about the boy that answered my question. The one with green hair and glasses." Dr. Connors said.

"That's our very own Izuku Midoriya, Aldera Junior High's best and brightest! He's currently ranked number 1 in his grade." The teacher said with a bit of pride that one of his students got recognized by Japan's greatest scientist.

As a smile spread across his face, Izuku felt a wave of joy and disbelief wash over him because he was being recognized by one of his idols. Bakugo scoffed and the class continued to go on their tour. Izuku was still standing there star struck but soon got out of it realizing he was getting left behind. As he was walking he saw Kyoka Jiro looking at the spiders. Izuku saw an opportunity and took it.

"Um, hey, d-do you mind if I take your picture? I, uh, I need one with a student in it." Izuku said as his hand trembled slightly as he pointed at his camera

"Yeah, sure. Where do you want me? Over here?"Kyoka responded nonchalantly, feeling a bit surprised that Izuku picked her out of everyone.

"Y-yeah, that's great," Izuku said while looking into the camera as he tried to focus the camera

"Don't make me look like a hot mess, okay?" Kyoka joked as she reached up to adjust her hair.

"That's impossible..." Izuku whispered

Kyoka overheard Izuku's comment, but dismissed it thinking it was an attempt to boost her confidence. Meanwhile, Izuku snapped multiple pictures of Kyoka with varying poses. As he continued to take photos, a spider was descending from the ceiling, landing on Izuku's hand and biting him before he could react. Kyoka's eyes widened in shock and concern as Izuku's face twisted in pain, the camera slipping from his hand as he clutched at his throbbing hand.

"Ow!" Izuku yelped as he held his hand, wincing in pain.

"Dude, are you okay?" Kyoka asked with a hint of worry in her voice because the yelp was all of a sudden.

"Um, yeah, it's probably just a-a cramp. I was writing a lot of notes after all hehe" Izuku said with a weak smile, trying to play off the pain.

Kyoka slowly nodded, feeling a bit skeptical about Izuku's explanation, but she decided to drop it and move on. Kyoka left following the crowd of students but she sneaked a glance before fully leaving. Meanwhile, Izuku just thought that he probably acted a fool in front of Kyoka. First he falls on the bus and now he is suddenly screaming while taking pictures of her. Izuku sighed as he looked at the photos he took of Kyoka forgetting about the bite he received. He smiled as he found a picture he really liked. All Izuku thought was 'yep i'm keeping this one'

(Imagine she's wearing her middle school outfit)

Timeskip

As the exhibit came to an end, Izuku felt a mix of emotions about the visit. He was glad he got to experience something so amazing , but he couldn't shake off the feeling of embarrassment from earlier. He silently made his way to the bus, hoping to avoid any more confrontations with Bakugo but before he got to the bus his teacher called him.

"Midoriya, can you please come over here." The teacher said while waving at him to come

Izuku's heart raced as he tried to figure out why his teacher would be calling him. Did he do something? Was he not allowed to take photos of the exhibit? What had he done wrong?

"Y-Yes sensei?" Izuku stammered out while nervously looking away not wanting to make eye contact

"Hey, Midoriya! I have some great news for you! Dr. Connors was really impressed with you and is interested in having you apply for an internship this summer. Here's the application form. He's taken quite a liking to you saying that he sees himself in you." The teacher said enthusiastically

"W-wow, th-that's great I can't wa-" Izuku said but was cut off when he felt a wave of pain like he's never felt.

"Midoriya are you okay?" the teacher asked worriedly

"Y-y-yeah, I just got a migraine, that's all," he said, trying to act normal, but his voice was shaking.

"Alright, Midoriya, I hope you feel better. Listen this is a great opportunity for you, don't miss out on it. Fill out the form and send it in as soon as possible, and I'll make sure to remind you in case you forget. And don't forget, you'll be representing Aldera Junior High and yourself, so make us proud!" his teacher said with an encouraging smile "Now, let's get on the bus and head back to school." he then turned around and walked to the bus with Izuku following him

As Izuku sat down on the bus, he couldn't shake off the weird feeling in his hand. The tingling sensation was now spreading up his arm, causing his muscles to twitch. He started to feel a pounding headache and felt like his head was going to explode. As the bus began to move, Izuku closed his eyes and took deep breaths, hoping the pain would go away.
