•Elsa's POV•
Jessica goes first. From the doorway I can see the prisoner being dragged out in chains. Oh God. I can hear her voice ring loud and clear, full of authority. She'd make a wonderful Queen.
"What is your name and crime?" The guy looks almost twenty.
"Jacob Matthews, and I killed my mother." He sobs.
"Why did you kill her?"
"It was an accident! I didn't mean to..." He trails off. Jessica looks like she's about to cry.
"What is your sentence?"
"Death."
"How?"
"I...I'll be shot to death." That's too harsh. If this man claims it is an accident...and by the way he holds himself in shame and despair, he is telling the truth.
She leans down and whispers something to him, and when she's finished he says,"Thank you."
She hands him her olive branch and he makes his way to the throne of the King and lays it at his feet. Kaya then goes out and it nears closer and closer to my turn.
"State your name and crime." Kaya says clearly. It is obvious she is trying to show off her rack. Ugh. Slut.
"My name is Candor Lands, and I buried my father on farm land that belongs to the monarchy."
"You know the rules, Candor. If you cannot afford the costly burial of a family member, then you cremate them. Am I not correct?"
"Yes, but-"
"And you do know that by not obeying the law you are committing treason?"
"Yes, ma'am, but-" "What is your sentence?"
"10 years." Kaya hands her branch to him. "Go, and pay your debt to the king."
I shake my head. "She didn't even let him finish."
"I know. Good luck." I tell Merida as she makes her way over to her prisoner. I gasp as they drag out a little girl, only about six. Merida gasps as well. "State your name and crime." She says softly, her Scottish accent sounding clear.
"My...my name is Emmalee Barns. I...I stole a loaf of bread." I sigh. The poor girl. She must be so scared.
"Hey, it's okay. Can you tell me why you stole a loaf of bread?"
"My brutter...he was hungry." Merida sighs. "Where is your parents?"
"They left."
"Can you tell me what your caste is?"
"Four."
"Can you tell me what your sentence is?" She nods.
"Five years." Merida nods. "I'll make sure you get out, okay?"
Only I can hear what she is saying. "Go and pay your debt to the king."
"Okay!" The girl hugs Merida and happily skips to the king's feet with her olive branch.
Now it is my turn.
I step out carrying my olive branch, all eyes on me.
I catch Jack's gaze. It is determined, eager, and sympathetic at the same time. I nod and then nearly scream when I see my prisoner.
It is Toothiana.
"T-Toothiana?" I whisper.
"Hello, my sweet Elsa. I'm sorry you had to find out like this." She looks down in shame.
I clear my throat. Be strong, Elsa. "State your name and crime."
"Toothiana Bunnymund. I was the wife of the second highest ranking rebel Edmund Aster Bunnymund. I took his place after he died." I nod.
"How did you get caught?" She sobs. "I turned myself in."
"Why?"
"Because I saw the good in this country when what I had thought was all bad. I took you in and I have been blessed ever since."
"Why did you turn yourself in? And why did you lie?"
"I had to protect myself and you and your sister. Elsa, believe me when I say I made some mistakes, I did. They threatened to kill me and you if I quit. So I stayed until you joined the Selection. I thought you were free, but they won't stop attacking...they won't stop until you and the monarchy are dead." She whispers. I gasp. She-she was protecting me the whole time.
And still is.
"What is your sentence?" I know what it is already.
"Death." My own adoptive mom...dying at my hands. No.
That tears it. I take off my jewels and hand them to her, along with my olive branch. Unless she can pay for her crimes, which is a very high cost, she can live. I lean down so only she can hear.
"I respected you. I loved you. And I still do." I rise.
"Go, and pay your debt to the king." She rises and makes her way to the king. He is very angered. They remove her chains. She runs up and hugs me. "Thank you, Elsa."
"I know. Now go to Arendelle; Anna is waiting." She nods and walks out, smiling. Before she leaves, she turns her head, her eyes saying something such as,'Go forth, young one, onto destiny. Be careful.'
