Chapter 40 - Plot Thickens
Sami's POV
Dave had been gone for longer than I'd hoped and Robert hadn't come back either... something wasn't right. Something was suspicious. I checked my phone for the fifth time, notifying the others of my impatience towards something.
"Sami?" Luke was the first to notice my jitteriness. "You okay?" I gulped down a sick feeling as I looked up towards the boys, their faces dropping as they saw my worry.
"I don't want to scare you all, but as a precaution can you get ready to leave?" Without question the four boys stood up, throwing their shoes and coats on.
"Are we talking 'bring your suitcase kind of leaving?" Michael asked carefully.
"Just valuables." I said as I too grabbed my jacket and threw it on. My phone buzzed in my hand, and looking quickly at it, noting it was from Dave. I opened the message to something I wish I hadn't seen.
"x"
This was it. The signal I'd used with these boys since the beginning. With them it meant I needed to help them but with Dave, I had a feeling it meant still to help the boys and not to help him.
"We need to leave. Now." I snapped, grabbing my ID and bag, the others throwing their valuables in a bag and following me. "Stay quiet." I said as they stood behind me. I opened up the door quickly, poking my head out to the hallway to check the coast was clear - which it was this time. I waved them to follow as I jogged down the hallway and towards the stairs, running down them at speed with the boys barely able to keep up behind me. They daren't utter a word, no matter what they wanted to ask they knew to keep quiet. We got to the ground floor and stood by a staff only exit. I twisted the doorknob but it was locked. Shit. "Stay here." I ordered as I ran out, grabbing the first staff member I saw and yanking them with me.
"Hey! What the hell?" They spat at me as I threw them towards the door.
"I need to get these people out of here urgently. Please open the door." I ruffled around in my bag and pulled out my ID. With one quick look, they pulled a key out and shakily opened the door. "I'll come back to sort out the bill don't worry." I smiled. "Thanks." I patted them on the shoulder as I pulled the boys out the door and towards the hidden back car park. I unlocked the door of the car and gestured for them all to get in, quickly jumping in the drivers seat and starting the car.
"What the fuck is going on?" Michael spat at me. "Where's Dave?"
"Keep your heads down. I don't want the paps to see you leaving." I ignored his question as I ordered them around again. I hated doing it but it was for their own safety. Dave had sent me a warning and he'd always said to me we had to be completely safe before we spoke about what had happened. The four boys ducked into the footholds as I casually drove, music playing as if nothing was bothering us. I tapped along on the steering wheel to Heartache on the big screen as we left the hotel, the satnav pre-set to another hotel that would be alerted if we had to change location. I put my Bluetooth earpiece in and dialled the suits instantly.
"Sami?" Lorna answered, worry in her voice.
"Hi Lorna, sorry to disturb you but Dave said I had to call you if we had to change locations?" I tried to sound calm on the phone, all the boys slowly sitting up into their seats and putting their seatbelts on.
"Are they in the car now? Do they know what's going on?" She questioned me, for good reason.
"Yes. No." I answered professionally. We always had a script to run by so the boys wouldn't get worried.
"Did Dave send you a message?" She quizzed worriedly.
"Yes ma'am." I said perfectly again. "We're heading to location two."
"Okay Sami, thank you. I'll try to get hold of Dave to find out what happened. Is Robert with you?" She asked more. I hesitated. How do I answer this one? I could be seen as reckless if she knew I'd tried to get all four boys out on my own, but I had to be honest with her surely?
"If I may ma'am, I think that was the issue." I said still trying not to give anything away to the boys who were gripping onto every word.
"Robert was the problem?" She repeated to me, confusion obvious in her voice.
"I believe so ma'am." I said, as sure if anything as I'd ever been. This was no coincidence. They both didn't return and then he texted me the warning? It had to be related.
"Wow. You don't make this job easy for me you know?" She let out a shocked laugh, to which i smiled in response.
"I'll take that as a compliment ma'am. If I may ask that you contact Dave and let him know of our location, as you can imagine it's difficult with the ratio currently to perform my best." Once again I spoke professionally and courteously, hoping to keep on her good side.
"Yes, I shall. I can't say I'm particularly pleased with the current situation but I guess this was unavoidable. Unfortunately when this is over we will need a phone interview for management purposes." She spoke as strongly as she could, knowing upsetting me wouldn't be the best thing right now.
"Of course ma'am, understood." I responded quietly.
"I'll call the hotel now, let them know to prepare for you. Thank you for your quick thinking. I'm going to call Dave to check on him and then call Reg, something slipped up here and I need to know what." My palms were sweaty as I drove, nervous that I was doing a bad job because I hardly ever drove now. This was something i had to do in the moment and I hoped I wasn't doing too badly.
"Thank you ma'am. Have a good day." I hung up quickly afterwards and continued driving, the car in absolute silence, tension filling the air quickly. Someone's phone pinged and I glanced up in the rear view mirror. "Please may I ask that no one discloses the fact we've had to move or that we're staying in a new hotel." I caught Luke's eye and he looked back down at his phone, putting it back into his bag.
"What's going on Sami?" Ashton questioned quietly. "Is Dave okay?"
"I think so. I'm sorry I had to scare you like that. Once we're checked in, I'll tell you everything, I promise." I said softly, my gazing moving to the hotel as we pulled up around the back where a staff member was waiting for us with the door open and a smile on their face.
Let's hope this hotel works out better than the last!
