Twenty-five.
Chanyeol parked the car on the opposite curb from the Byun's place of residency. He cut the ignition and sighed before glancing over at Baekhyun, who was staring pass him at the house. Chanyeol sighed again and grabbed Baekhyun's chin, turning his head until their eyes met.
"Are you sure about this?" Chanyeol asked.
Baekhyun sighed and pulled his chin away as he shook his head. "No. But it has to be done. We can't hide forever . . ."
"I wish we could . . ." Chanyeol whispered.
Baekhyun smiled sadly and lovingly caressed Chanyeol's cheek before leaning in to kiss him. It was a gentle and sweet kiss that lasted for a second, and when it broke, Baekhyun inhaled a steadying breath.
"Okay," he said. "Let's do this."
Have you ever been so afraid in your life, it feels like the ground is falling out beneath you, and the sky is breaking apart? Or maybe no matter how many times you inhale, you still feel like your suffocating? Do you feel like that? I feel like that.... And each new step I take only seals my fate.
Baekhyun's feet moved like they had been encased inside cement and each forward step nearly knocked him down. His breathing had grown elevated as the sidewalk leading to the front door gradually shrunk.
He was so afraid. How could he possibly tell his parents Chanyeol was back from the dead? How would they even react?
Would they be happy for him . . .?
Baekhyun shook away the thought. Surely they'll be happy for me. They wouldn't have a reason not to be. Although Daehyun . . . Baekhyun mentally shook himself and squared his shoulders.
He wouldn't be afraid; he couldn't be afraid. Because sooner or later he planned on marrying Chanyeol, and he wanted to share their love and special day with his family and friends. So yes, he had to do this . . .
Baekhyun finally reached the front door, and with a shaking hand he reached out to knock. He only had to wait a moment for his mother to appear with an array of many different emotions flashing across her face.
Mrs. Byun took a moment to look over her son before tears began to fill her eyes and she pulled him into a tight hug. "Baekhyun!" she cried. "Where have you been?"
Baekhyun bit the inside of his cheek and hugged his mother back. He buried his face in her shoulder and replied back in a muffled voice, "I'm sorry for not calling, Mom, but I had to get my head straightened out before seeing you and Dad."
Mrs. Byun sighed and released her son from the hug as she said, "Well, we're glad your here now. Come inside, honey. We have much to talk about."
Baekhyun allowed his mother to guide him inside, and before the door could close behind him he spared a single glance over his shoulder, meeting Chanyeol's eyes through the car window. A small smile curved Chanyeol's lips, and it was enough to give Baekhyun the confidence he needed to tell them the truth behind his failed engagement.
He was ready.
He wasn't ready.
Baekhyun's feet nearly gave out from beneath him once he walked into the living room. His heartbeat picked up and he began to panic because sitting on the couch were the Jung's.
"Holy shit," Baekhyun whispered to himself. What are Daehyun's parents doing here?
Mrs. Byun noticed her son's hesitation, but she didn't notice the barely masked look of horror. She smiled and patted Baekhyun's shoulder, as she spoke with a tone that indirectly told him to be polite. "Sorry for not telling you sweetheart, but Daehyun's parents came over for tea."
Tea my ass, Baekhyun thought as he smiled thinly.
"Hello Mr and Mrs. Jung, how are you?" Baekhyun asked as nicely as he could while gritting his teeth against a scream of frustration.
Mrs. Jung smiled pleasantly and replied, "We've had better days, Baekhyun."
"And speaking of better days, what made you decide to break my son's h—–"
"That's enough, dear," Mrs. Jung said sternly, interrupting her husband's tirade. He fell silent, but Baekhyun could tell by his pursed lips he wasn't anywhere near finished. Mrs. Jung sighed. "Baekhyun, you're a smart boy, so I know that you're aware of why we are here. So please, explain to us what happened because Daehyun wouldn't say much more than that the marriage wouldn't work. And we don't know what he meant by that. So please, Baekhyun, help us understand?"
Baekhyun inhaled a shaky breath and rubbed his face before quietly muttering, "Daehyun was being purposefully vague . . ."
"What do you mean, honey?" Mrs. Byun asked.
Baekhyun sighed. It was now or never; and he knew he couldn't hide the truth anymore. He inhaled deeply before saying, "He was withholding the truth to protect me. He knew I'd want to explain the truth for myself at my own pace."
"What . . . is the truth?" Mrs. Jung asked confusedly.
Baekhyun bit his bottom lip and exhaled a heavy sigh before saying, "I love your son, I really do." The Jung's smiled at this, but Baekhyun's parents were suspicious, and their suspicions were confirmed when Baekhyun continued by saying, "But it's only a friend love, and it took seeing someone else to realize that truth. I'm so sorry."
The Jung's stared at him incredulously, and then in a choked voice Mrs. Jung asked, "You cheated on our son?"
Baekhyun bit his lip and slowly nodded. "Yes, I'm so sor—–"
Baekhyun was cut off by Mr. Jung when he explosively yelled, "How could you do that to our son!? He's been nothing but faithful and patient with you! Even two years ago when you went through that faze and briefly left him for that dying—–"
"Shut up!" Baekhyun yelled. "I know what I did was wrong and I've made up for it the pass two years! I can't help that I fell in love with someone else other than your son!"
Mrs. Byun tentatively reached out to touch Baekhyun's shoulder as she gently said, "Honey, maybe you should—–"
"No, mom! I came here to tell you the truth, and that's the truth. I fell out of love with Daehyun because the one I never stopped loving came back to me. That's the truth!"
The room was silent as everyone processed the information, and then in a quiet voice Mr. Byun asked, "Who came back, Baekhyun?"
Baekhyun opened his mouth to tell them just when there was a knock at the front door. A slow smile curved Baekhyun's lips as he went to answer it, returning a moment later with a familiar boy beside him with black hair and ears that stuck cutely out of his curls. He smiled shyly as Baekhyun softly said, "Chanyeol came back."
