chapter twenty-three: Trial by Blood
warning: there's discussions of death threats and a fight scene, you have been warned.
They ran in silence, their breath coming in ragged gasps as they pushed their exhausted bodies to the limit. The sound of the wolves grew louder with each passing moment, their hunting instincts honed to a razor-sharp edge. Talvi's pure white wolf form was slightly ahead of them, her nose leading the way through the forest. Finally, they reached the clearing and saw the massive tree in the center, whose trunk was wide enough to easily hide all of them. Without further ado, they dashed towards the tree, ducking into the hollow as soon as they reached it.
"Talvi, you gotta turn back!" Cedar gasped, his voice barely audible over the sound of snarling wolves surrounding the tree. "They'll tear you apart if you stay out there!" The snow-white wolf glanced back at them, her amber eyes full of determination. "I'll keep them busy," she growled. "You two hide in the hollow and wait for me."
Cedar's eyes widened in fear as he watched Talvi leap out of the hollow and confront the wolves that were closing in on them. She let out a fierce howl, her powerful limbs tensing as she prepared for battle. The other wolves, momentarily stunned by her appearance, hesitated for just a moment before surging forward. The snow white she-wolf met them head-on, her teeth bared in a snarl that could have frozen the blood of any creature that heard it.
The huge, black wolf curled his teeth and snarled, baring his fangs. "Foolish girl!" he growled, lashing out with a powerful paw that sent Talvi tumbling through the air. The other wolves closed in, surrounding her, their teeth bared and their eyes wild with the lust for blood. Talvi struggled to her feet, her amber eyes flashing with defiance, as she met the black wolf's glare once more.
"We made a truce!" She protested, her voice strong despite the danger surrounding her. The black wolf snorted derisively, his eyes narrowing. He launched himself at Talvi once more, but she was ready this time. With a nimble twist, she dodged his powerful paws and sank her teeth into his shoulder. The wolf yelped in pain and surprise, giving Talvi a moment's respite. "You little bitch," he growled, lashing out again.
She dodged again, and the leader's claws grazed her left flank as she growled in pain. She spun and bit at the leader's hind leg, but he was too fast for her, shaking her off easily. The other wolves were closing in, their bodies pressing against hers, trapping her against the tree. She couldn't breathe and couldn't think.
"Stop it!" Cedar screams, leaping out of the hollow in a fit of desperation. "Leave her alone!" The black wolf turns its attention to him, a menacing growl rumbling in its chest. "Cedar," Phoenix whispers, tugging at his arm. "You can't fight them all." But Cedar is beyond reason, his anger and fear driving him forward. He rushes at the wolves, flailing wildly with his arms.
"Nobody touch her," he growled, his voice surprisingly forceful. The wolves hesitated, their ears flattening against their heads as they snarled. "She's mine," Cedar continued, "and I say we leave her alone." The black wolf leader snorted derisively but didn't advance any further. Instead, he turned his attention back to Talvi, watching her carefully. Cedar took a step back, his chest heaving as he fought to catch his breath.
The leader glared at Cedar, then, back at Talvi, he huffed, "You have spirit, little one. That's good. I like that." The other wolves relaxed slightly, their tension easing. "But," the black wolf continued, "you have broken our truce. You must pay the price." He looked at Cedar once more. "And so must he."
"You're suggesting a war, are you?" Cedar's question hung in the air, his voice trembling with fear and anger. The black wolf leader regarded him with a cold, calculating gaze. "a war? Yes, pairing with other packs would be too much fun for me!" He licked his lips, hungry. "You are no threat to us," the wolf growled finally, "but this one is. If she is to live, she must be part of our pack. You can come with her, or you can leave her to us."
"If you lay a paw on her, I will kill you. all of you." Cedar threatened darkly, his hazel eyes glowing with rage and something else. "And I will make sure every last one of your pack knows what happened." The black wolf laughed, a deep, throaty sound that sent chills down Talvi's spine.
"This boy got fire in him! I love my prey feisty." The black wolf grinned, showing his teeth, before looking back at Talvi. "You will be a valuable addition to our pack, little one. Strong and fierce, just like your mate. But," he added, his voice growing serious, "you must prove your loyalty. To us and to each other."
Cedar turned his head to glare at Phoenix, then glared back at Talvi. His gaze softened as he thought about what just happened—about the words of the black wolf. He knows he can't fight them alone; he knows Talvi is stronger than him, but the thought of losing her and never seeing her again was like a dagger to his heart. He took a deep breath, steadying himself, before looking back at Talvi and nodding slowly.
"This means war," Talvi whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of her own labored breathing. She glanced at Cedar, her heart racing as she searched his eyes for any sign of what he intended to do. She knew he was just as terrified as she was, but she trusted him. She knew he would make the right decision.
The alpha sighed as he rubbed his paw over his muzzle. "If it comes to that, I guess we can't stop you," he growled, "but know this, little one. If you choose him, you choose this life. And we don't take betrayal lightly." He glances at Cedar, his gaze assessing, "And you, boy. You'll have to prove yourself to us as well. If you can't protect what's yours, what good are you to us?"
Cedar can feel the rage bubbling deep inside him, and he knows that if he gives in now, he'll never be able to protect Talvi. He squares his shoulders and meets the black wolf's gaze, refusing to flinch. "I choose her," he growls, "and I choose this life. But know this: if anything happens to her, if you so much as look at her the wrong way, I will hunt you down and end you myself."
The alpha let out a deep chuckle, amused by the threats of the boy. "I like your spirit, human," he nodded to Talvi, "but remember, little one, you're now part of our pack. You'll have to earn your place." He turns his attention back to Cedar. "And you, boy. Prove your worth. Show us what you're made of."
