chapter thirty: Shadows of Recovery

it has been only a few hours since Cedar passed out from the pain and he was doped on healing herbs that coursed through his nerves and veins, but it seemed like an eternity to Jett. He didn't want to leave Cedar's side, afraid that if he did, he would disappear like a dream, a figment of his imagination. The cave was dimly lit by the flickering candles that danced along the rough walls, casting eerie shadows that seemed to come alive, creeping across the furs where Cedar lay. The air was thick with the scent of burning wood from the fires outside, mixed with the musky odor of sweating wolves.

Cedar stir before flattering his eyes open, they look like two pools of swirling sickness. The pain that was there before, a dull throb in the background of his thoughts, is gone now. He takes a deep breath and tries to sit up, but Jett gently pushes him back down. "Shhh, easy there, pup. You're still healing." Jett cooed, his green eyes shining with love and adoration.

it took a moment for Cedar to register what Jett had said, and then the memories of the fight came rushing back to him. His muscles ached in protest as he slowly sat up, leaning against the rough stone wall behind him. Jett pull Cedar's head into his lap, running his fingers through his hair, comforting him. "It's going to be alright, bro," he murmured. "We'll get through this together."

"it's really you, is it not some trick?" Cedar mutters, his voice hoarse from disuse. Jett chuckles softly and nods, pressing a kiss to the top of his head. "Of course it's me, dumbass. I'd never leave you to deal with this alone." He feels Cedar relax slightly against him, and he knows that even though his brother is still in pain, just having him there is a comfort in itself.

"I-it has been too l-long.' Cedar whispers, his voice barely above a whisper. 'I-it feels like I've been asleep f-for days.' Jett smiles gently, rubbing circles on Cedar's back. 'Well, you have been. You needed the rest. And we're still going to take it easy for a few days. No more fighting, no more hunting. Just rest and healing.' Cedar nods, his eyes drifting shut again. 'T-thank you, Jet.'

"I never stopped looking for you." Jett says softly, nuzzling his brother's neck. "I searched for you every day, even when I thought you were gone forever. I just wanted to bring you home, back to where you belonged." Cedar's eyes flutter open and he looks up at his brother, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "I missed you too, Jett. More than you could ever know."
