chapter thirty-four: Howl of the Unknown
"This is a stupid idea! Cedar is going to catch us, or Solar!" Phoenix whispered, trying to hide his fear. Talvi rolled her amber eyes. "We have to do this, Phoenix. We have no other choice. We need to know what Solar is planning." She gave Phoenix a reassuring nudge.
Jett chuckled lightly, trying to calm Phoenix down. "Cedar won't expect this. We'll be fine. And if Solar does find us, well, we'll just have to deal with him, won't we?" He glanced at Talvi, who nodded in agreement. They crept silently through the forest, using their senses to navigate the darkness. Finally, they reached the outskirts of Solar's territory. The den was just beyond the next cluster of trees.
"Welcome to Hogsmeade, my friends!" Solar's voice boomed through the forest, startling them. They quickly ducked behind a nearby bush, peeking out to see the leader of the rival pack standing atop a large, flat rock. He was addressing a group of his followers who had gathered around him. "As you all know, we have been growing stronger in these woods. And with the arrival of the newcomers, we are unstoppable!" His followers cheered wildly.
"That's your father? He looks like sh*t." Phoenix teased Jett, who was still hiding behind the bush. Jett chuckled softly, nodding. "He has been working too hard lately. I'm worried about him." He responded, watching his father speak with admiration. "But you're right. We need to know what he's planning. Let's go see if anyone in the crowd will talk to us." The three wolves crept closer, keeping their distance from the group. They scanned the faces of the wolves, looking for anyone who might be sympathetic to their cause.
Jett watched the crowd as he landed his gaze upon Luna. Cedar had a crush on her way before he started to be with Talvi. He could see her swollen belly; she was pregnant. He could see the fear in her eyes and the guilt she carries for being part of Solar. He took a deep breath and slowly approached her, trying to appear non-threatening.
"Luna! Luna!" Jett whispered, trying to get her attention. She looked up, her eyes wide with surprise. "It's me, Jett. I know you don't want to be here, but I need your help. Solar is planning something, and we don't know what it is. Can you help us?" He glanced around quickly, making sure no one else was paying attention.
"What are you doing?! Are you mad?! I know what Solar is planning!" Luna whispered, and she placed a hand on her belly as she looked around nervously. "He's planning an attack on your pack, and he's going to use you and the others as bait. He's going to lure them into the open, and then he's going to slaughter them all." Jett looked shocked. "I didn't know that."
"He's really mad at Cedar; he fully blames him for the death of his mother, Lily."We gave her a proper burial a month ago." Luna whispered. "He's planning to attack your pack in the morning, and he's going to use his own wolves as bait. I don't want to be part of this, but I can't leave." Jett looked at Luna sympathetically.
"You're pregnant, right?" Jett asked, trying to keep his voice down. Luna nodded. "I know it's dangerous, but I can help you escape. You don't have to be a part of this. Solar doesn't care about you or your baby. We can get you to safety, and I'm sure my father would take you in." He glanced over at Phoenix and Talvi, who nodded in agreement. "But first, we need to warn Cedar and the others about Solar's plan. Can you help us?"
Luna nodded her head slowly. "I trust you, Jett. I want to get out of here. But I need to warn Cedar first. I don't know if I can convince him to leave, but I have to try." She glanced at Solar, who was still speaking to his followers. "We should go now, before anyone suspects anything." The four wolves slipped away from the crowd, moving quickly through the forest.
"where's Jace? Should he be with you? He's the father, isn't he?" Jett asked, trying to keep the conversation going. "He's back at the den. He's been acting strange lately. I think he knows something's up, but he doesn't want to believe it. We should hurry, though, before Solar realizes we're gone." Luna explained.
"We can't leave him here either; we need to take him with us to the shadowclan." Jett said he knew that Jace would be safe with them, and they could protect him, Luna, and the unborn pup. "Alright, we should hurry then. Lead the way." Luna nodded and began to run through the forest, followed closely by Jett, Phoenix, and Talvi. They moved swiftly and silently, their wolves' senses tuned to every sound and scent around them.
"Who the hell are these two?" Jace asked Jett, nudging his head at Talvi and Phoenix; they had confused looks. "These two are Cedar and my friends. They're here to help us, and they can keep a secret. We need all the help we can get," Jett explained, glancing at Luna, who nodded in agreement.
"I'm Phoenix, by the way." Phoenix greeted him, puffing his chest pridefully. Talvi nodded at Jace as well, his expression stoic. "We're here to help Luna and the pup. Our pack's safety is important to us."
"And don't forget me. I'm Talvi." Talvi added, her voice soft and gentle. "We're all here to help each other." Luna dipped her head in a respectful manner at Talvi.
"It's nice to meet you two; I never thought Cedar would make new friends outside of the pack." Luna said, nudging Jace with her arm. Jace smiled softly at Luna before turning to Phoenix and Talvi. "I'm Jace; I'm Luna's mate and the father of her pup. I've known Cedar for a long time, and I trust him with my life." Phoenix nodded solemnly, while Talvi gave Jace a reassuring smile.
"Why don't you entirely smell like a wolf-shifter? It's like you smell like an outlander too." Phoenix asked, tilting his head curiously.
Jace grinned, "Well, you see, I was born human before I joined the Solarflare pack. I was out hiking one afternoon and I accidentally met Solar. He brought me here and told me about my destiny to become a wolf-shifter. The rest, as they say, is history." He chuckled. "It's been a wild ride ever since."
"You were blessed by Artemis with Solar's help?" Talvi questioned, intrigued by Jace's story.
"Yup! I used to be a hippie, and I enjoyed the lifestyle that wolf-shifters had. So I guess you could say it was meant to be. But Solar's plan to turn the pack against itself is just not right. We're all family here; we should protect each other, not betray one another." Jace paused, his expression darkening. "But we'll stop him. I promise."
"Jace, you seem like a good leader. We're here to help you. Whatever it takes," Phoenix assured him, laying a reassuring hand on his shoulder. Talvi nodded in agreement, her eyes scanning the surrounding forest as they continued their journey.
"I'm not really a good alpha, but I'm more of an omega and quite proud of it!" Jace chirped, flashing his teeth in a friendly grin. Phoenix and Talvi were surprised by Jace's reaction. "But I will try my best to lead them in the right direction. I'm just glad that we have you two to help us out. I trust you both completely."
