chapter nineteen: Silken Secrets and a Bond Unfurled
"Is it true you're a wolf, Silkie?" Cedar was puzzled; he raised an eyebrow. He's never heard of such a thing, but the idea of her being half-Silkie and half-wolf is fascinating to him. Talvi nods, her expression solemn. "My mother was a Silkie," she explains, "and my father was a wolf. They met when he was sent to protect her from a rival pack. They fell in love, and I was born." Her voice trails off, and she looks out into the distance, as if seeing memories play out before her eyes.
"My silver fur is rare among wolves, but it makes me stand out. I was often teased as a child, but my parents loved me just the same. They taught me about both my human and wolf sides and how to control them. My mother's people have the gift of sight, and my father's people have the strength and loyalty of wolves. Together, they made me who I am today." Talvi's voice takes on a wistful quality as she speaks of her parents.
"What about your fur on the floor? How does that play out?" Cedar asked, glancing at the soft, silvery fur. Talvi smiled and shrugged. "I can shape-shift between my human and wolf forms, but the fur is still a part of me. When I'm in human form, it becomes a blanket or a cloak to keep me warm. And when I'm in wolf form, it helps to camouflage me in the forest. It's a gift from my mother's people, a reminder of where I came from."
Cedar couldn't get over the fact that Talvi is a wolf silkie, but he loves her the same. He doesn't care what she looks like or what species she is; all that matters is that she is with him. He wanted to show her the world and wanted her to see the beauty in everything.
"Do you know anything about plants and herbs?" Cedar asked, his voice full of curiosity. Talvi smiled, her amber eyes lighting up with interest. "My mother was a healer among her people, so I grew up learning about many different plants and their uses. I can make potions and ointments that can cure wounds and ease pain."
"She would be perfect for the pack," he thought to himself. Cedar's heart swelled with pride, knowing that Talvi would be not only his mate but also a valuable member of their community. He knew that there would be those who might not understand or accept her at first, but he was determined to protect her and show them that she belonged.
The moonlight shines upon Talvi's face; it almost makes her look like an angel—his angel. Cedar wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, protecting and showing her the world. He had so many places he wanted to take her and so many things he wanted to show her. She was his everything, and he would do anything to make her happy.
"Should we head back?" Cedar's voice brought Talvi back to the present. She blushed, realizing she had been lost in thought. "Yes," she said, nodding. "We should." She gathered her belongings, careful not to disturb the fur on the floor. As they began their journey back to the pack, Talvi felt a new sense of purpose. She knew that being with Cedar, her mate, would change her life in ways she could never have imagined.
"Yes, we should head back; Sage might need me for something. He is our leader after all." Talvi smiled at Cedar, her expression both affectionate and respectful. As they walked through the forest, the scent of pine and earth filled the air, and the sounds of animals rustling in their sleep surrounded them. Cedar felt a sense of belonging that he had never experienced before. He knew that Talvi was the reason for it, and he vowed to protect her with his life.
