Chapter Nine: Bound by Bonds, Torn by Duty
The cool air filled Cedar's lungs as he inhaled, taking in the scent of the ocean, the bonfire, and the pine trees surrounding them. He couldn't help but feel grateful for the new family he had found. Despite the hardship and loss they had all endured, they had managed to create a new life together. He glanced over at Sheldon, who was currently deep in conversation with Dexter about the best surfing spots in the world, and felt a pang of affection for them both. He barely even knew them, yet he felt like they had been together for years, sharing the same ups and downs.
He was so lucky he got found the way he did; two humans saved him, and he is forever grateful for their kindness and concern for a stranger in need. As he listened to them talk about their past and what they liked about living in the wild, he couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to live with them permanently. He knew that they had been through a lot together and that they had formed a strong bond, but he wasn't sure if he should bring it up or not. He didn't want to ruin anything or make them uncomfortable. He needed to find Jett at whatever cost; he knew he's out there all alone and wondering, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right. The scent of deceit and danger was still in the air; he could feel it in his bones.
He hasn't been himself since the death of his mother and his unlawful banishment alongside Jett. He is restless and constantly worried about his brother's safety. He knows that they can't stay here forever, and as much as he'd like to, they have a responsibility to find Jett and bring him home. The guilt of leaving him behind is eating away at him, but he knows that they can't abandon their quest for survival and safety. He decides to bring it up with them the next day, hoping that they'll understand.
"Should we be looking for Jett right now? He's still out there. Looking for me, the pack isn't that far off." Cedar asked worriedly, his hazel eyes shining with worry. The two humans took a glare at each other. " Dexter looked at Cedar with understanding in his eyes. "We know you're worried about your brother, Cedar, but we also want you to be happy and feel safe. You've been through so much already, and we want you to enjoy your new life with us. Plus, we're not giving up on finding Jett. We'll continue to look for him while we make sure you're settled in." He couldn't believe what he was hearing. It was one thing for Sheldon to say, but Dexter was Sheldon's best friend. "But he's my brother, and I can't just leave him out there." Cedar's eyes were swelling with tears, but he blinked them away. "I get that," Sheldon chimed in, "but we need to be smart about this. We can't risk our own safety by going off half-cocked. We need to find a balance between taking care of ourselves and finding your brother." Cedar looked at them both, his heart heavy with guilt and worry. He knew they were right, but it didn't make the situation any easier. As they continued to talk, he tried to focus on the present, on the fact that he was with people who cared about him and wanted what was best for him. But every so often, his thoughts would drift back to Jett, and he couldn't shake the feeling that something terrible was waiting for them around the corner.
