Chapter forty: Struggle for Survival

Out of nowhere, Phoenix doesn't feel good. He felt the pain on his side. He looks at Talvi and sees the concern in her amber eyes. He tries to hold his strength up, but his legs collapse underneath his weight. Cedar, Talvi, and Jett rushed towards him.

"Dude, what's wrong?" Cedar asked worriedly, kneeling beside Phoenix. His gums were pale, and he was breathing heavily. Talvi's eyes darted from Phoenix to Cedar, her expression a mix of confusion and concern.

"He's hurt really bad." Talvi whispered, her voice cracking. Cedar glanced at her, confusion written all over his face. He didn't understand what could have hurt Phoenix this badly. The last time they had been in a battle, it had been Solar, Lark, and some of their former pack members against them. It hadn't been a particularly brutal fight, and everyone had emerged relatively unscathed.

"I need to turn him over so I can exaggerate." Cedar started, but Talvi cut him off, shaking her head. "No. You could make it worse." Her eyes darted around, looking for anything they could use to help Phoenix. "We need to get him to a safe place, somewhere we can tend to his wounds." She glanced over at Jett, who nodded grimly. "I'll carry him," Jett said, moving to scoop Phoenix up into his powerful arms. Cedar and Talvi exchanged worried glances as Jett carefully lifted their injured alpha. The rest of the pack fell in around them as they began to move toward the den, their footsteps careful and quiet. No one spoke as they walked; each wolf was lost in their own thoughts about Phoenix and the future of their packs.

"We can only hope he'll make it." Jett's deep voice broke the silence as they carried Phoenix through the forest. The weight of their injured beta was heavy on his shoulders, but he bore it with strength and determination. Talvi walked beside them, her expression a mix of worry and determination. Cedar followed close by, his expression somber as he contemplated the events that had led to this moment. The other wolves trailed behind them, their silence a testament to the gravity of the situation. "He's not going to die, is he?" Cedar questioned grimly; his tone was soft and low.

Talvi shook her head, her amber eyes not leaving Phoenix's pale face. "I don't know," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "He's been hurt really badly, and we're moving as fast as we can to get him to safety. But he's strong, and he's survived worse before. We just have to hope that he pulls through this time." She paused, taking a shaky breath, before continuing. "We'll do everything we can for him, though. We won't give up on him."
