Chapter eight: Seaside Revelations
Cedar feels the warm rays of sunlight beaming down his back as he walks towards the beach with Sheldon and Dexter. He had never seen the beach before, but Jace had told him about it because Jace used to be human before he was blessed by Artemis with the help of the sun and became a wolf-shifter like himself. He told Cedar about the beach and how it was the most beautiful place in the world. As they walk closer to the shore, Cedar's eyes widen in awe as the ocean stretches out before them, sparkling like a million diamonds under the bright sky. "Thank God you two don't live near the city, huh?" Cedar teased, revealing his teeth in a smile. "The city is fine," Sheldon said, looking out at the water. "But I prefer the peace and quiet here." Dexter nods in agreement. They continue walking, the soft sand squishing beneath their feet, until they reach a small, secluded spot where they can be alone. "This is perfect," Sheldon says, sitting down on a nearby rock. "We can build a fire at night and roast marshmallows." Cedar sits down next to him, gazing out at the water again. "I wish Mom could be here," he says softly. Sure, he loves his mother more than anything, and he still needs to find his brother Jett, who is out there somewhere, but he knows that they can start a new family here with them. "She'd love it here, too," Sheldon replies, wrapping an arm around Cedar's shoulders. "And we'll find your brother, I promise." Dexter nods, sitting down cross-legged in front of them. "You guys have each other, and now you have us. We'll get through this together." And for a moment, as they sit there together, the world feels a little less cold and a little less scary.
"What's it like to live in Canada, Toronto?'' Cedar asked curiously, "I've always wanted to know, but Jace never really told me much." Sheldon shrugged. "It's pretty cold, but the people are nice. There's always something to do, and the food is amazing. We lived near a big park where we could go ice skating in the winter and play soccer in the summer." Dexter nodded in agreement. "I remember when we first moved there; it took me a while to get used to the cold, but I eventually did. I made some good friends at school, and we used to go to this arcade all the time after classes." They sat in silence for a while, lost in their memories, until Sheldon suddenly perked up. "Hey, I have an idea! Since we have a ton of free time now, why don't we teach you how to surf?" Cedar's eyes lit up at the mention of surfing. He had seen people do it in movies and always wanted to try it himself. "Really?" he asked, excited. Dexter grinned. "Yeah, I can teach you guys. My uncle used to be a surfer, so I picked it up from him." And with that, the three of them spent the rest of the day teaching Cedar the basics of surfing, laughing, and having fun in the warm waves.
"This is amazing! I've missed out a lot over the years as being a wolf-shifter kept me away from the sea," Cedar beamed between breaths as he tried to balance on the board. "Thank you both for teaching me." They spent the rest of the day in the water, with Dexter and Sheldon offering words of encouragement and guidance as Cedar struggled to find his balance and catch waves. The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, and the air grew cooler. They decided to head back to their campfire, their muscles sore from surfing and their stomachs growling for food. As they trudged back through the sand, Cedar couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment wash over him. Despite the hardships they had faced, they had found a way to create a new life together. "It feels kind of selfish that Jett is still out there looking for me, and here I am having fun." Cedar's face dropped as he looked at the ground. "He'd want you to be happy, Ced," Dexter said, putting an arm around his shoulder. "And besides, we're not giving up on finding him. We'll keep looking until we do." Sheldon nodded in agreement. "You're a part of our family now, and we'll always be there for you." They reached their camp, where a fire was already crackling, waiting for them. They spent the rest of the evening roasting marshmallows and swapping stories about their lives before the pandemic. As they lay down under the stars, the ocean breeze caressing their faces, Cedar knew that he had found a new home with Dexter, Sheldon, and whatever the future held.
