A Mystery
It is currently 9:45 am and Marshal Ney is peacefully sleeping. Wellington calmly enters the room and looks over at Marshal Ney. Then he calmly walks over to the sofa and notices the book on the table. He goes to grab it but he feels a strong hand firmly grab his wrist. Wellington starts speaking in an irritated tone.
Wellington: Well good morning to you too Marshal.
Marshal Ney: Dont touch that. You bastard.
Wellington: Let go of my hand, please.
Marshal Ney: Nien du bastard. (No you bastard.)
Wellington suddenly drags Marshal Ney off the sofa. Marshal Ney hisses at Wellington. Then he gets up and his large jet black wings appear and his eyes begin glowing a bright crimson. He then tackles Wellington and slams him into the sofa causing it to fall over. Sending them both tumbling forwards. Wellington sighs to himself out of slight irritation. Then he starts speaking in a slightly calmer tone.
Wellington: What was that for?
Marshal Ney: I don't want you messing with my work.
Wellington: Also since when did you know German?
Marshal Ney: Since I could talk. The place where I grew up was predominantly German. My family was German and French.
Wellington: Why don't you want me touching the book?
Marshal Ney: It will mess with my work!
Wellington: Alright. Did you sleep well you seem grumpy.
Marshal Ney: I'm not grumpy!
Wellington: Are you sure about that?
Marshal Ney: Yes now I'm going to make some tea.
Marshal Ney gets up off the floor and walks into the kitchen and begins looking around. Wellington also gets up off the floor and awkwardly stares at Marshal Ney who seems quite confused. Clementine enters the room and stares at Wellington and then at Marshal Ney then at the sofa that has been knocked over. She then quietly sighs to herself out of slight irritation. Then she starts speaking in a calm yet slightly irritated tone.
Clementine: What were you two doing?
Wellington: I might have angered him. A small fight might have happened. Now he is trying to make tea possibly because he is tired and grumpy.
Clementine: Michel!
Marshal Ney: Call me by my title, please. We are not on first name basis.
Clementine: Fine. Marshal, I will make you tea.
Marshal Ney: Alright.
Marshal Ney stops looking around the kitchen and walks over to Clementine. Clementine stares at his wings and notices that some of his stitches have snapped. Clementine quietly sighs to herself and then she starts speaking in a calm voice.
Clementine: I'm going to have to redo some of your stitches. You were being too rough in that fight you had.
Marshal Ney: He was going to mess with my work.
Clementine: Doesn't matter you need to take care of yourself and not fight with Arthur. If you want those cuts to heal you shouldn't be fighting.
Marshal Ney: Fine.
Clementine: Go sort out the sofa. Then be nice to Arthur and maybe just talk to each other.
Marshal Ney: Fine we will try to be nice to each other.
Clementine walks into the kitchen and begins to prepare some tea. Marshal Ney walks over to the sofa and kneels down next to it and pushes it up. Then he sits down on the sofa and folds his arms out of slight annoyance. Wellington walks over and calmly sits down next to Marshal Ney who quietly hisses at Wellington. Wellington gently puts his hand on Marshal Neys shoulder. Wellington starts speaking in a calm and soft voice.
Wellington: Why are you, angry Marshal?
Marshal Ney: I didn't sleep well last night.
Wellington: Your past haunts you. Marshal, we will find out what happened and your nightmares will hopefully fade.
Marshal Ney: I keep hearing things that I know aren't real. My mind isn't in the right place. I feel like I'm losing my mind.
Wellington: I feel the same way.
Marshal Ney: You seem more sane than me. The first night I came into this world I just spent it murdering people. I was out for blood. I don't remember much of it as I was in a state of blood fueled rage.
Wellington: I'm just hearing voices in my head.
Marshal Ney begins to calm down and his eyes return to their normal blue. But his wings still remain and he politely folds them inwards. Wellington starts speaking in a calm yet awkward tone.
Wellington: How do you know how to control your powers so well?
Marshal Ney: I spent most of my time learning to control them while I was in France.
Wellington: Please teach me, Marshal.
Marshal Ney sighs out of slight irritation and then he starts speaking in a calm voice.
Marshal Ney: Fine I shall teach you how to transform back into your human form. You will learn how to do it properly without basically causing yourself to be in pain. Best to start with the most basic thing.
Wellington: Alright when will you teach me?
Marshal Ney: Tonight. I have other things planned to do today.
Wellington: Like what Marshal?
Marshal Ney: Trying to discover how I died.
A couple of minutes later Clementine walks over with the warm cup of tea. She cheerfully smiles noticing that Wellington and Marshal Ney are getting along. She then carefully hands the cup of tea to Marshal Ney who starts drinking the tea. A couple of minutes later he finishes the tea and smiles a little bit. He then starts speaking in a slightly cheerful voice.
Marshal Ney: It surprisingly doesn't taste as bad as I was expecting it to.
Wellington: Don't you dare say that British tea is bad!
Marshal Ney: All I can say is that it's not bad but it isn't good either.
Wellington: I feel offended.
Marshal Ney: Of course you do.
Marshal Ney gently puts the teacup down on the nearby table. Clementine then starts speaking in a calm yet cheerful tone.
Clementine: Anything else you need Marshal?
Marshal Ney: I need some history books on France if you have any.
Clementine: I do have one that would be useful to you. I shall go get it for you.
Marshal Ney: Thank you.
Clementine calmly walks off to go get the book. Wellington awkwardly stares at Marshal Ney then he starts speaking in a calm yet slightly awkward tone.
Wellington: Wouldn't it be weird possibly looking through all the past events you have experienced?
Marshal Ney: I didn't think about that. I have been trying to figure out how I died.
Wellington: Do you know how you will feel when you figure out how you died?
Marshal Ney: Depends on how I died.
Wellington: What if it was a gruesome death?
Marshal Ney: I was shot by someone. I was not stabbed and I didn't get my limbs cut off.
Wellington: How do you not remember who killed you?
Marshal Ney: Because the only time I saw them I was immediately killed! I took a bullet to the heart!
Wellington: I see.
Marshal Ney: Maybe once I find out how I died I might feel better mentally.
A couple of minutes later Clementine comes back with a book in hand. She then calmly walks over to Marshal Ney and hands the book to him. Clementine starts speaking in a cheerful voice.
Clementine: I hope that you enjoy reading the book. Now I'm going to make breakfast and once you have finished reading the book I will redo your stitches.
Marshal Ney: Alright.
Clementine cheerfully walks into the kitchen and starts preparing breakfast. Marshal Ney carefully opens the book to the first page and starts reading the index. He then flips to the page he requires and starts calmly and carefully reading the information. Wellington smiles a little bit and he starts speaking in a slightly cheerful tone.
Wellington: Why were you called that?
Marshal Ney: Called what?
Wellington: The bravest of the brave.
Marshal Ney: I was the last French soldier out of Russia. That's how I earned that title.
Wellington: It seems that you were involved in a lot of battles.
Marshal Ney: Yes and I also have many scars from that war. I wish I didn't have to deal with another war.
A few minutes later Marshal Ney gets to a certain page that he silently reads in shock. A couple of minutes later he starts speaking in a shocked and slightly upset tone.
Marshal Ney: I was executed!
Wellington: Well that is something that I didn't expect would have happened to you. I thought you would have died on the field with honor.
Marshal Ney: I was executed by my own men!
Wellington: I saw my own men kill each other sometimes.
Marshal Ney: I was executed for treason!
Wellington: Treason? What did you do that was treasonous?
Marshal Ney: I don't remember!
Marshal Ney suddenly hears the sound of multiple muskets being fired. This causes him to drop the book out of fear and slight panic. Wellington starts speaking in a calm yet slightly confused tone.
Wellington: Marshal are you alright?
Marshal Ney: No I need to be alone! I need time to myself!
Wellington notices that Marshal Ney is beginning to cry out of fear and slight panic. Marshal Ney gets up and goes to walk away. But Wellington gets up and gently puts his hand on Marshal Ney's shoulder. Marshal Ney immediately turns around and hisses at Wellington. He then shoves Wellington backwards and immediately walks over to the door. Upon opening the door he transforms back into his human form then he walks outside. A couple of minutes later he reaches the tree and sits down underneath it. He then lies down on the soft grass and curls up and starts quietly sobbing to himself. He then starts speaking in a quiet and upset tone.
Marshal Ney: I betrayed France. I betrayed my Emperor. I deserved it. I deserved to be killed for my treasonous act.
Meanwhile, inside the house, Clementine stops making breakfast and looks outside. She notices Marshal Ney curled up underneath the tree. She then starts speaking in a calm yet slightly concerned voice.
Clementine: He didn't take finding out about his death too well did he?
Wellington: No. He didn't.
Clementine: I'll go check on him he seems quite upset.
Wellington: Alright.
Clementine stops making breakfast and calmly walks outside. Eventually, she stops in front of Marshal Ney who is still sobbing. Marshal Ney starts speaking through his sobs.
Marshal Ney: I betrayed the empire. I betrayed my country. I destroyed my honor. It wasn't his fault at all.
Clementine: Michel.
Marshal Ney: I don't want to talk.
Clementine: What will cheer you up?
Marshal Ney: I just want to be alone. I want something that will comfort me.
Clementine: Do you want to come inside?
Marshal Ney: No. I don't want to come inside.
Clementine: I understand. What will comfort you?
Marshal Ney: This might sound weird for a grown man. But I find that blanket I sleep with to be comforting for me.
Clementine: Thats not weird at all.
Marshal Ney: Really?
Clementine: Yes.
Clementine calmly walks back to the house. Upon entering the house she notices Wellington awkwardly sitting at the table. Wellington starts speaking in a calm yet slightly awkward tone.
Wellington: Is he alright?
Clementine: He needs something that comforts him. He doesn't want to come inside right now.
Wellington: I see.
Clementine calmly walks over to the sofa and gently picks up the soft grey blanket. She then walks outside and cheerfully walks up to Marshal Ney. She then notices that Marshal Ney has stopped sobbing. But he is still curled up in a small ball. Clementine kneels down in front of Marshal Ney. Then she starts speaking in a soft and comforting voice.
Clementine: Don't blame yourself for everything.
Clementine gently puts the blanket on Marshal Ney. Who then pulls it over himself and starts quietly whimpering to himself. Clementine continues speaking in a soft and comforting voice.
Clementine: Your alright Michel.
Marshal Ney: Stop calling me by my name.
Clementine: It's normal to be afraid of something. I can tell that you do fear being shot. Even though that happened to you long ago.
Marshal Ney: I always tried to show people that I wasn't afraid. That I wasn't a coward.
Clementine: You aren't a coward at all stop being hard on yourself Michel.
Marshal Ney: Really?
Clementine: Yes. Now just take your time to calm down and collect your thoughts.
Marshal Ney: Yes I will.
Clementine walks back to the house leaving Marshal Ney to calm down. A couple of hours later Marshal Ney pulls the blanket off himself and gets up and wraps the blanket around himself. Then he begins walking back to the house. Upon entering the house he notices Wellington sitting at the table reading a book. Marshal Ney walks over to the sofa and sits down and awkwardly stares at the floor. Clementine enters the room and notices Marshal Ney awkwardly looking at the floor and walks over to him. Clementine starts speaking in a calm voice.
Clementine: How are you feeling?
Marshal Ney: Better. I just had to let my feelings out.
Clementine: It's normal to cry and get upset at times. But I don't want you to be so hard on yourself.
Marshal Ney: Your right.
Clementine: Now I'm going to have to redo your stitches.
Marshal Ney: Fine but please don't take too long. I don't like my wings being touched.
Clementine: I'll try to not take too long. But you can't rush these things.
Marshal Ney: Fine.
Clementine exits the room to go get her things. Marshal Ney uses his powers and makes his wings appear. Wellington who has just noticed that Marshal Ney is sitting on the sofa looks over at him. Marshal Ney sighs out of slight irritation and starts speaking in a tone full of annoyance.
Marshal Ney: I can feel you staring at me. I would prefer it if you didn't do that.
Wellington: I apologize for what I did this morning.
Marshal Ney: I accept your apology. But please just don't try and mess with my things.
Wellington: Thank you. And I won't do that again.
Wellington goes back to reading and Clementine enters the room with her supplies to stitch Marshal Neys wings up. Marshal Ney tries to ignore the uncomfortable feeling of the stitches in his wings being redone. Along with the feeling of his wings being touched which is also uncomfortable for him. A few minutes later Clementine finishes redoing the stitches and smiles at him. She then starts speaking in a cheerful voice.
Clementine: You did well even though it was probably quite uncomfortable for you.
Marshal Ney: I have had worse.
Clementine: Now please be careful I don't want you hurting yourself.
Marshal Ney: I will try.
Clementine happily walks off to go put her supplies leaving Marshal Ney and Wellington alone in the room together once again. Marshal Ney gets up and uses his powers to make his wings disappear. Then he walks over to the table and sits down in the seat opposite Wellington. He awkwardly looks down at the table and then he starts speaking in a calm yet slightly awkward tone.
Marshal Ney: I apologize for my outburst this morning. I didn't mean to take my feelings out on you.
Wellington: You were in shock and your emotional outburst was understandable.
Marshal Ney: But I was wrong to take it out on you.
Wellington: Yes but we all make mistakes and I accept your apology.
Marshal Ney: Thank you.
Clementine enters the room and walks over to the kitchen area and begins preparing lunch. A few hours later the sun is now setting and Wellington is outside staring at the fiery sunset. A couple of minutes later Marshal Ney walks outside and walks over to Wellington and stands beside him. Marshal Ney smiles a little bit and he starts speaking in a cheerful voice.
Marshal Ney: I hope that you are ready for what I'm going to teach you.
Wellington: Yes I feel ready.
Marshal Ney: I suggest that we go to the city.
Wellington: Alright.
Clementine walks outside and she starts speaking in a calm voice.
Clementine: Please be careful you two don't get yourselves hurt.
Wellington looks back at Clementine and he smiles and starts speaking in a calm voice.
Wellington: We will be careful we promise.
Clementine: Good. I will see you in the morning.
Wellington: Yes.
Clementine goes back inside and gently shuts the door behind herself. Wellington and Marshal Ney both take flight and begin flying to London. A few hours later they arrive in the city and Marshal Ney begins flying towards Big Ben. Wellington follows Marshal Ney and they both gracefully land on the top of Big Ben. Marshal Ney stares at Wellington and he takes a deep breath. Then he starts speaking in a calm yet serious voice.
Marshal Ney: Alright I'm going to help you learn how to control your powers and transform into your human form.
Wellington: Yes. So what do I need to do?
Marshal Ney: Think of something that makes you feel calm or happy. That's what I did at the start before I could do it without thinking about a certain memory.
Wellington: Alright.
Marshal Ney: Now close your eyes and think. Think about something good just forget about anything else.
Wellington closes his eyes and begins thinking. While Marshal Ney looks out at the view of the city. A few minutes later Marshal Ney notices that Wellington is still thinking. An hour passes and Wellington opens his eyes feeling frustrated that nothing happened. Wellington starts speaking in a slightly irritated tone.
Wellington: Why did nothing happen!?
Marshal Ney: You need to be patient.
Wellington: You calling me impatient is very ironic.
Marshal Ney: Alright that's a little rude. I'm just stating the truth.
Wellington takes a deep breath and looks out across the vast city. Then he starts speaking in a slightly calmer tone.
Wellington: I'm going to go feed. I will be back in a few minutes.
Marshal Ney: Alright I will wait here then.
Wellington gracefully leaps off the edge and begins flying into the distance. A couple of minutes later Marshal Ney senses something behind him. Marshal Ney turns around and notices someone wearing a cloak with a hood over their head all he could see was their glowing blood red eyes. Marshal Ney starts speaking in a calm yet slightly nervous voice.
Marshal Ney: Who are you and why were you watching us?
???: I don't need to tell you my name Frenchman. Besides, I know that you don't belong here.
Marshal Ney: First of all my homeland has been invaded by these bastards who now rule the place! I have been driven from my own home and the only place I knew would be safe was London!
???: Of course, London would be safe. Hard to invade.
Marshal Ney: It doesn't seem to be that hard planes are flying over the city some nights!
???: Yes I've known this for a while I've been watching them fly over. But the enemy hasn't actually invaded the country. They will never land on the shore.
Marshal Ney: How long have you been in London?
???: Well I've been here 10 days since I was awoken from my eternal slumber.
Marshal Ney: I see.
???: Well I best be off. I might see you around. But then again I might not.
The unknown figure flew up into the dark cloudy night sky. A few minutes later Wellington gracefully lands beside Marshal Ney and he starts speaking in a calm yet slightly concerned voice.
Wellington: Are you alright?
Marshal Ney: Yes. But there is someone else like us. He didn't tell me his name. But he's been here longer than both of us.
Wellington: Very odd.
Marshal Ney: He also didn't recognize me. But he knows that I'm French.
Wellington: Well it's not hard to tell that you aren't from here.
Marshal Ney: At least this place is more peaceful than Paris.
Wellington: Yes.
Marshal Ney: Let's go back to Clementine's place. We will work on your powers again tomorrow.
Wellington: Alright.
Marshal Ney and Wellington both leap off the edge and begin flying back to Clementine's place. A few hours later they both land outside Clementine's house. Wellington quietly opens the door and enters the house. Marshal Ney then also enters and quietly closes the door behind himself. Marshal Ney starts awkwardly whispering.
Marshal Ney: I want to know who that person was.
Wellington: What are you suggesting?
Marshal Ney: If they turn up again tomorrow or if we see them again I want to follow them.
Wellington: Are you sure that's a good idea?
Marshal Ney: Yes there are two of us and one of them. Besides they didn't seem hostile.
Wellington: Alright. Well, I'm going to get some sleep. Good night.
Wellington calmly walks to his room and quietly opens the door and enters the room closing the door behind him. Marshal Ney walks over to the sofa and lies down and closes his eyes.
