Lola's Surprise
Lola twirled the small cake pop in her hand, staring at it with a hungry glare. She stuck the thing in her mouth, biting it off the stick, chewing it, and swallowing. She followed her father, dressed in a white suit, and her mother, in a black cocktail dress. 'Always so fancy with the outfits. God, we're just going to the movies.' She thought.
She knew that her parents were the owners of a largely successful business, which was how they afforded their luxury, but did they need to show it everywhere they went? She looked down at her own outfit and admitted to herself that she could be a bit of a spoiled brat sometimes, but at least she was grateful to buy and pick out her own clothes. That day she was wearing dark green corduroy overalls, a white blouse, a green ribbon that stood out in her wave of blond hair, white socks, and black sneakers. Plain, but her own style.
Her parents said that after the movies a "surprise" would come. What that meant, she didn't know. Her parents had always been vague when it came to surprises, since it could be almost anything she thought of. A new puppy? Probably. A new wardrobe filled with dresses and skirts and blouses? Maybe. A dollhouse that was spread across one of the walls of her room? Sure. A flat screen TV and a tablet with all her favorite games? Why not!
But she just never knew. She just could only wonder what she would be faced with at home.
After the movie, she and her parents walked into their car (Lola didn't quite car what brand it was), and her father asked the driver to take them home. As they drove her mother started talking to her.
"Don't be too surprised when you see it. Okay?" Her mother said, in her soft, silky voice. Much more different than her father's rough and strict tone. No matter what he said, he always had that tone. Her mother, on the other hand, never seemed to be able to feel anger. She was calm as a crystal clear lake.
Her mother's voice was the kind of voice you'd hear in a lullaby, drifting you to sleep. It was a truly amazing sound. Lola loved to listen to her talking. She would get her stuck on a subject, and her mother would talk for hours. Though she was almost sixteen, Lola would still lay her head on her mother's lap. She would slowly drift off to sleep every time. It was almost like a magic sleeping spell that would also give you the most calm dreams you could imagine.
Utterly beautiful.
"Um, sure?" Lola said, unsure of what she meant. Weren't surprises supposed to be, well- surprising?
"Now, don't give her any hints." Her father whispered to his wife in a playfully warning tone. Lola tilted her head in confusion, but she shrugged it off and laid down. The car drove so smoothly, and her mother began a conversation with her father, so, Lola soon drifted off to sleep. Naps, to her, were the best thing to ever happen when she just wanted to relax.
When they got home they told her to go to her room and wait until they called her down. She strolled up the long stairs and to her room. She closed her door, then jumped, caught off guard by a sudden bark. She looked over at her fluffy yorkie, Chips, sitting on the windowsill barking at something outside. "Hey! What did I tell you? Stop barking at the window!" Chips whimpered as he jumped off the windowsill and onto the bed. Lola sat down next to him and teased him playfully for a few minutes. She wondered if Chip actually understood what I said.
Her parents called her down after fifteen minutes. When she got down to them, they seemed to be failing to contain their excitement. "Well, sweetie, we've been really excited to tell you, and it's a really a big deal." Her mother stepped to the side, and much to Lola's surprise, there was a small girl, about five years younger than Lola herself, with big blue eyes, olive skin, and long brown hair draping down her shoulders.
She wore a long yellow sleeved sweater with the Disney princess, Belle, on it, a pale blue skirt that was WAY too big for her, made to fit her waist by countless safety pins, the skirt part itself going far below her knees.
Lola's dark purple eyes widened until they couldn't anymore. What was happening? Who was this girl? "Your mother and I have been talking, and we decided that we wanted to have another child, but with your mother's condition..." He trailed off a bit
"I know dad." Lola assured her father. Her mother was infertile, despite always wanting to have children of her own since she was a teen. So adopting was the next best option in her parent's eyes. "This is Charity, she is going to be your sister!" Her mother said, smiling from ear-to-ear. Lola was too stunned for words, but before she knew what was happening, Charity spoke in such a quiet voice that Lola could barely hear it. "Hi, you're name's Lola, I hear. It'll be so wonderful to have someone. At the orphanage it's crowded, but lonely." She said. "I'm really glad to have a chance in a place like this." She looked around in awe at the enormous room. It was clear Charity had most likely never step foot in, or even seem, a room larger than a New York studio apartment.
Charity smiled, but it was a bit strange how she did. She bit her front lip, creating the effect of a smile, but it didn't seem real. But the smile was still up in her eyes; they were full of joy, excitement, and thrill. Lola smiled too. 'Oh my God, I actually have a sister!' She thought in shock. Lola, though having a friend group, wasn't exactly popular. Most kids at school were close-minded and rude, daring to think that she was the selfish one.
If she ever tried making friendly conversation with them, the insults started. Things of how she was a brat, air-headed, a snob. It hurt even more that they said she didn't know what it was like to appreciate things, seemingly forgetting the fact she herself was adopted. It wasn't that much of a secret either. Her father was dark-skinned, with brown eyes and a lanky figure. Her mother was Asian, with jet black hair and gentle hazel eyes.
Lola, however, had dirty blonde hair and green eyes, and was pale as a sheet. Yes, despite being abandoned when she was four and feeling unwanted until she was fourteen, she was the one that couldn't appreciate things. She, despite the unpopularity, had a group she stayed with. But, she didn't dare taint their happy-go-lucky atmosphere with how desolated she felt.
But now, a sister.
Someone to talk to.
And someone that just might know how it all feels.
"So, sweetie, could you show your new sister around the house, and introduce her to the staff?" Her father asked. "Of course!" Lola responded. She waved her hand motioning for Charity to follow her. Charity sprinted over to Lola, seeming excited. The former attempted grabbing the latter's hand to guide her, but Charity seemed uneasy. Lola instead seemed to offer her sleeve, which Charity held.
Once Charity was closer to her, Lola got a better look at her. She tried not to look like she was evaluating her. She didn't want Charity to feel uncomfortable. Her lips were pale for her skin shade, and she had a cute button nose. Her hair was slightly tangled. Lola could give her a brush to get those out. Her eyes were a deep, dark, rich blue. Like the ocean. Her eyelashes were long and light, like feathers.
For someone who seemed to be in an orphanage for a while, her features were neat and well-taken care of. Unlike the heartbreaking scenes Lola knew all too well from the orphanages she'd be tossed around from.. She looked like someone who would grow up to be a model. But Charity seemed to act too humble to want that attention. She was cute and pretty. But, then again, she might be treated the same way Lola was. The kids at school would either love her or hate her. But, it was the weekend, so they wouldn't need to worry about that yet.
Lola led Charity up the stairs to her room. "This is your ROOM!?" Charity asked her in awe. "This is bigger than the rooms that were supposed to hold ten girls at once!" She added. "Yea, those rooms were awful! I could hardly sleep. Five beds, two girls each! How do they expect people to live like that?" Lola laughed and Charity gave a shy giggle. 'Finally! Someone who understands!' They two seemed to think in unison.
