Chapter-31

The car was rolling down the hill at top speed while Axel tried his best to get it under control. We had left North Wellsington last night and now we're on our way to Central Wulfaria to get the cure. The road outside North Wellsington was covered with soldiers who were armed to the teeth to prevent any zombies from getting in.

It had hurt my heart to leave my parents behind and Tess but I had no other choice. I had to try and get the cure for my sister even if it meant weeks and weeks of travelling and fighting zombies again. We had left Hope back for I knew my parents would take good care of her. It had been truly a sad farewell for I'd become very fond of the furry little cat.

We somehow made it down the hill in one piece and Axel winked at me in the mirror. I sighed. He spent the next five minutes boasting and high fiving everyone in the car.

We had barely driven around for fifteen minutes when I spotted zombies roaming the street. We easily dodged them by driving around them. We needed to conserve our energy and strength for when we truly needed it.

We continued on and the road started showing signs of disuse as various plants snaked across it at intervals. Soon, the whole road was covered in vegetation and it was like driving through a jungle. The weather was humid and it felt too stuffy with all of us in the car. Axel had decided to leave Charles with my parents after many arguments and had finally called his parents.

Bria was in the front with Axel and was uncharacteristically silent. She had decided to come with us after all for her mom had been too busy to pay her much attention and she had nowhere else to go. She thought if she got the cure, her mom would be thrilled at having such a big story for her newspaper. I had told her it was dangerous and she'd merely snorted.

Axel was having a hard time driving and his face was screwed up in concentration. I looked away from him. I was not going to be distracted right now. Axel abruptly stopped the car, making all of us jump in surprise.

"It's no use." he panted. "We'd have to clear some of these plants if we want to move ahead."

Sighing, all of us got out and started to remove the branches. It was hard and heavy work and all of our hands were covered in cuts and bruises by the time we were done. My elbow was throbbing badly as it hadn't healed completely yet.

Suddenly, I heard a rustling around my back. I whirled around and dodged, barely missing the zombie's teeth by inches. Taking out my knife, I stabbed him over and over again until he finally fell down. Two other zombies had circled my friends and they were fighting back as hard as they could. I moved over to help them and with Ana, managed to kill the second zombie.

Ana stabbed the third one and Bria let out a high pitched scream.

"No! Its blood went in my mouth!"

She started crying hysterically as Ana and I stood around not knowing what to do. Axel came over and put a hand on her shoulder.

"Spit it out!" he commanded.

"Already did."

"Well spit more of it out- as much as you can."

She did and looked pretty pale by the time she was done. She wanted water but Axel didn't allow her to drink any in case some traces of blood were still in her mouth. She put her head on the window and looked miserable. This time, everyone was even more silent than they had been before as Axel started to drive.
