Chapter-24

Ignoring the security alarm, I stepped through, carefully avoiding the jagged edges of the door. I collapsed in the empty hall, pulling my shirt over my head and wrapping around my arm. It was soaked through in minutes. Dipping my head back, I took in a deep breath and steeled myself to look at the cut.

It was deeper than I thought and covered in blood. I bit my lip and dragged myself up again. My head gave a resounding throb in protest. I walked all over the empty building, the alarm still wailing overhead. The building was devoid of any furniture and full of dust which made me sneeze.

I finally spotted a room which looked like a kitchen. Crossing over to the basin, I turned on the tap wishing with all my heart that it worked. It did.

Water came out of the tap, a trickle at first and then with a steady flow. I washed my cut and wrapped my shirt around it. It hurt like hell, but I managed to do it. Then I rinsed the rest of my face and body, washing away the dirt and blood.

I felt better after cleaning myself. I wandered around the abandoned rooms, searching for something to eat. I wasn't lucky this time but I hadn't expected to be. Any food lying in the old warehouse would have been spoiled.

The security alarm stopped, startling me out of my thoughts. I wasn't too worried about the police- instead, I wanted them to come check out the building and rescue me. Given all that was going on, I doubted the police cared much about vandalism and trespassing.

I heard voices down the main hall. A man and a woman it seemed. I desperately hoped they weren't zombies with mottled skin. I had no weapons on me and wouldn't fare well in a fight at all.

I peered around the wall to see them. The man was well built, of average height with sandy brown hair. For some reason, he reminded me of Harry and my stomach fluttered nervously. The other woman was Asian, with long dark hair and a pretty face.

They might help me escape from this place. They didn't seem the murderous kind to me, but then again, neither had Harry. However, I badly needed their help. The battery of Anna's phone had died and I had no way of reaching North Wellsington. I was well and truly stuck.

I stepped forward to meet them and tripped over my untied shoelace. I fell with a loud crash on my hurt arm and let out a strangled yell as my arm throbbed painfully, Both of them jumped up and the man pointed his gun at me. The woman took out a knife from her belt and gave me a suspicious glance.

"Wait, please!" I croaked from the floor.

The man raised his eyebrows and fired. I screamed.
