Chapter-23

I ran without stopping, even though I got a stitch in my side. I didn't even wait to see if Harry had gotten out of the car. He must be alive and even if he weren't he would have turned into a zombie-like creature soon enough.

But the thought of his being dead terrified me and I found myself hoping with all my heart that he wasn't and that he would somehow manage to make it to North Wellsington. Even though he had turned crazy and had tried to kidnap me, I still didn't want him dead. What kind of a terrible person I would be if I wished him to die?

My arm was bleeding badly and I knew it would leave a scar. The cut might even get infected if I didn't clean it soon. But I knew stopping would be dangerous. Harry might still be out there and the scent of the blood dripping from the gash from my arm might attract zombies.

I knew I could faint from the blood loss if I didn't do anything about it. I could see some buildings in the distance. I decided to stop there and dress my cut.

The buildings looked deserted and worn out. They looked as though they had been unused for a long time and there was no sign of humans anywhere. I frowned, stopping myself to catch a breath. If there were no humans around, it was unlikely to find any help here. But on the bright side, the lack of humans meant the lack of mottled men.

I reached the first building, which had a glass door. I tried to push it open, but it didn't budge. I growled, feeling mad. I didn't come all the way here just to be stopped by some stupid locked door. I glanced around wildly and saw some bags of cement and a few concrete pieces of some broken wall lying there. Apparently, there had been some construction going on some time back but had discontinued for some reason.

I picked up a piece of the broken wall and glanced at my reflection in the glass door. Some of my hair had escaped from my ponytail and hung about my face. There was dried blood sticking to the strands near the back from where Harry had hit me. My arm was bleeding, my clothes were torn and covered in dirt. I looked like a horror freak show.

Taking a deep breath I threw the broken piece at the glass door. It shattered leaving the glass door intact. I gritted my teeth and picked up another piece. My arm was throbbing badly and I needed to get inside. I yelled and threw again. This time it left a scratch. I began throwing rocks wildly at the door.

Finally, the door shattered and I staggered towards it feeling a little faint but triumphant. As soon as I stepped into through the door a loud blaring sound cut through the air, making me jump. I had triggered the security alarm.
