Chapter-20

I felt a deep sorrow well up within. Even though I had not known Maya for long, she had been kind to us. It shouldn't have happened to her. I stood staring at her being torn to the point of no return by the zombies. I felt a tear slide down my nose, but I made no attempt to wipe it. I was not ashamed for grieving Maya.

Harry tugged at my sleeve, forcing me to keep moving. I took a last look at Maya and allowed Harry to haul me away. I glanced at him. His face showed no sadness or grief. Instead, his face was stony, impassive, displaying no emotions. It felt a little strange to me but I decided to dismiss it as his way of coping with Maya's death.

Harry soon left me and headed to his truck. I found Ana in our tent, talking to her parents over the phone. I frowned and pulled my own cellphone out of my pocket to call my parents. I was extremely worried that they had not managed to contact me yet. I shoved it back in my pocket when no one answered.

"Nothing yet?" asked Anna sympathetically.

I shook my head.

"I am so worried about Tess. And they haven't even managed to contact me yet."

"Hey, why don't try from my phone?" asked Anna brightening up.

"Really?"

"It might work," she said, handing her phone over.

I was about to call when Bria stuck her head in the tent.

"People are burying the dead. I thought you might want to attend," she said, sounding uncharacteristically serious.

I put Ana's phone in my jacket pocket and walked out. Three people had died today. Everyone mourned for them. I saw Charles crying, while Axel stared straight ahead. I walked up to them and picked Charles up in my arms. Sniffling, he hugged me tightly. Axel turned to look at me.

"I am glad you are safe," he said softly.

I just nodded. I still didn't feel like talking to him. I scanned the crowd for Harry and saw him standing alone. Axel saw me looking and clenched his jaw.

"What?" I asked.

"Nothing Nell. It's just...well, you know how I feel about that guy," he said.

"I think he's okay," I said, putting Charles down. "I should talk to him."

I began walking towards Harry when Axel grabbed my arm.

"Nell, be careful," he said.

"He has just lost a friend, Axel. Cut him some slack, will you?" I said angrily.

His expression changed and he dropped my arm.

"Of course." he sneered. "Runoff to your Perfect Harry, who you think is so strong and so hot with his dumb blond hair."

"What?"

"You heard me. Do what you want."

"Fine, I will." I snapped. "And you run off to your precious Bria."

"Fine." he snapped back.

I strode forward to where Harry stood.

"Meet me tonight at the edge of the camping field. Midnight." he said before I could even open my mouth.

I nodded and he walked off.

As soon as the hands of my wristwatch struck twelve, I slipped out of the tent and headed to the edge of the field. Harry hadn't arrived yet. I waited around for a few minutes and then decided to head back.

I was checking my watch again when something hit me hard on the head from behind and I collapsed.
