Chapter-19

I was struggling to keep myself awake as the night went on. Cali, Ana and Zeno all were passed out in the back. It was unusually quiet with no zombies in sight, no one yelling or firing bullets.

I could see the moon shining brightly and remembered what that jerk Harry had told Nell. Three days and you turn into a zombie forever when bitten. I shuddered.

So many people had died, so many were waiting for us. Zeno was still hurt which meant we had to hurry back which was fine by me. I'd had enough of these dreary roads with overgrown vegetation.

I thought about how Zeno still had mottled skin in some places. That seemed permanent. I remembered how Harry had the same skin. He was acting crazily but I doubted that was because of the cure. Even before that, he had kidnapped Nell and wanted to feed off her.

I clenched my jaw in anger. After so long, that thought still made me want to kill the jerk.

I swerved to avoid hitting a tree lying in the middle of the road and narrowly avoided crashing in another tree. I gritted my teeth as I tried to safely drive around it.

"Axel?" asked Ana in a sleepy voice. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing"

She yawned.

"How much time will it take to get back?"

"I don't know. Shouldn't be more than a month."

"We have to go faster," she said thoughtfully. "Zeno needs attention, Nell needs the cure and so does Tess."

I sighed.

"Even I was thinking that. But these roads are so hard to drive through and we keep getting attacked by those zombies."

She groaned.

"Man, I can't wait to see Nell again. And I can't wait to see Cali and Zeno reunited with her."

I smiled a little.

"That is something I wouldn't want to miss," I said, parking the car at the roadside and settling into sleep while Ana kept watch.

By the time I woke up next afternoon, everyone else was already up.

"Quit lazing around!" snapped Cali at me as soon as she saw me. I sighed.

"I need you to help me pinpoint locations on this map, pretty boy, so hurry the hell up! Now, where do you think we encountered most of the zombies on our way here?"

I stared at the map.

"I don't know," I said slowly. "Why didn't you mark it while we were travelling?"

She scowled at me.

"It's because I just thought of it. You're useless, Pretty Boy!"

Zeno, who was leaning against the wall, grinned at me. I grinned back. He looked a little pale but other than that he seemed fine. he must have been in pain because of his half-healed wound.

"By the way, the whole time I was unconscious, nobody bothered to clean Bad Baby," he said, frowning. "Who used it so horribly?"

I'd never seen Cali get so fast when she was busy with something. I began laughing as her face turned red.

"Gotta go," she mumbled.

I collapsed weakly on the ground, unable to control my laughter.
