Chapter-14
All of us were hurrying towards the exit. I was too excited and didn't even question the lack of guards around. Suddenly, the noise of the chaos behind us stopped. I wanted to turn around but Cali was firmly pushing anyone who lagged behind. She'd meant it when she said she didn't want anyone to die.
An alarm started blaring overhead. I stopped but Cali dragged me along.
"Keep moving pretty boy!" she panted, out of breath.
"But..." I protested weakly. "There's an alarm ringing!"
"We'll make it out before that!" she snapped at me.
"Halt!" someone yelled behind us. I ignored them and ran.
"Stop right there!" ordered a guard, suddenly appearing in front of us. Cali didn't even flinch and continued on as though she planned to topple him over and make her getaway.
A few more guards joined the guard in front of us and all of these were armed. As more guards covered the exit, I had a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. We wouldn't be able to make it out. The bottles of cure felt heavy in my hand. I clenched my fist. I couldn't let Nell die. So many people were waiting for the cure.
Cali finally stopped and put her hands on her knees. Guards closed in on us. I wanted to ask her what to do next when I stopped cold.
Cali was crying. I felt horrified. Brave, dominating Cali never cried. I quickly looked away. It wasn't her fault that we had been caught at the last moment. Her plan to get the cure had worked. She didn't have to blame herself. But it apparently looked like she did.
I cast my mind around desperately, trying to think of a way out. The guards were yelling at us, asking how we'd gotten in and who'd sent us. They had somehow forgotten the cure. The bottles felt heavy in my sweaty hands.
I thought hard. Scientists were extracting zombie blood to make this cure. But how would it work on those who hadn't been affected? I bit my lip. It was too large of a risk to smash it right here, where all of us were crowded.
A guard shook me by my shoulders.
"Answer me! How did you get in here?"
I smiled at him sinisterly and made my accent as thick as possible.
"My country is a small, small place far from here and I think it will be very rich if I released the deadly virus I have in this bottle right here," I said, lifting the cure bottle with my fingers wrapped around the glass part to hide the purple glow.
All the guards automatically stepped back. I yelled and pretended to smash the bottle right on the floor, making the guards back away in terror.
This was our chance. Zeno lifted Bad Baby and fired everywhere leading to pandemonium. We made a dash for it. Cali and Ana went out first. I stepped through and gestured to Zeno who began running towards me. We had made it. Nearly.
A bullet came whizzing out of nowhere and hit Zeno in the side. He collapsed clumsily to the ground and was still.
